For such a miserable day, Ashton was in a pretty cheery mood. A glance to the windows proved it to be raining and storming something terrible--water almost seemed to be coming down in sheets and as he watched, a bright flash of lightning lit up the clouded sky. It was miserable and drenched, but Ash didn't mind. Here in the Earth dormitories it was perfectly warm and comfortable, huddled by a fire that he had lit much to the dismay of several dorm-mates. "It won't jump past the grate and attack you," he said with a soft laugh as he noticed a couple freshmen eyeing it warily. "We've only got to worry if there are Fire students about, and it's not like they can get in here." Of course, if the Fire elementals were that determined to break into the Earth dormitories they could probably find a way--the Water students had gotten into theirs, after all. But Ashton wasn't worried about that and he didn't want to freak out the poor ninth graders either, so he left it alone.
Granted, those in the lowest grade were doing a lot better than they had in the beginning. Ashton had only been the stand-in leader at first, but he could recall a time when they'd known nothing about what was going on in the world of Earth elementals and they hadn't really understood why the Fire kids hated them so much unless they'd grown up with stories from their parents. Sometimes Ashton envied the people that had their parents to tell them things about the Academy before they'd even showed up here themselves. Ash's parents had been non-elemental--it had skipped over his father's generation and his mother had never possessed any power in her side of the family at all. It was only his grandmother that had the gene, and she was a Water elemental, unlike him. Ashton and his Gran were pretty close thanks to connecting over it, but she could be rather overbearing and strict when she wanted to be. It was hard to believe that his moody old grandmother had once been of the bubbly, outgoing Water elemental stereotype. A light smile graced his lips as patterns of light from the fire danced across his face. He missed her. Maybe he'd go and visit when he next went down to Vancouver to see his parents. Unfortunately, the Academy being a boarding school, that could be as late as December.
Deciding that he was bored and that he wanted to spend this day off inside with company rather than just staring into a fire and reminiscing, the cheerful Earth elemental turned to one of the girls that he didn't know. "So, how are you?" he asked, figuring that it was safe to start conversation. He was always a little more reserved and hesitant when it came to talking to people he didn't know, but the Earth kids were like a family to him and so he felt much more natural in starting conversations with them. "I planned to go outside but the weather decided against it," he said conversationally, gesturing to the window. Maybe it was a little lame to be discussing the weather, but Ashton had never really cared much about conversational clichés like that. "I'm Ashton, by the way." He stuck out his hand for her to shake if she was willing. Of course, maybe she would be put off by his sudden friendliness and refuse to talk to him, but it wasn't for lack of effort.

I had really just been one of those days. It had been raining, she had lost a hole chunk of her homework had gone missing in the black-hole she calls her bedroom and she had been getting phone calls from telemarketers all day. Apparently she, or at least her parents considering that's who they wanted to talk to, could buy heaps of things but half the time it was just for life insurance and stuff for the roof or at least something like that. She wasn't really paying attention after the third phone call. As soon as she walked into the dorm she finally realized that the day could only get better from this point in. She could actually find that pile of homework that she lost in her room that was due a couple weeks prior. Well, at lease she hoped that she could find that homework, her teacher has been asking for that assignment for ages now and the last thing that Sam needed at this point was a call from her parents asking what was happening. That was for sure.
Looking around the dorm area Sam could see heaps of people just walking around and talking like they knew that something big was about to happen. If there was one thing that Sam hated, that would be when she was out of the loop on something and that was defiantly how she felt at this point in time. The last thing she actually remembered happening was when the water kids decided it would be fun to have a look inside our lovely earth dorms. 'Oh, how I would love to just break into their dorms'.
As soon as someone began to walk over to her she wondered if someone was actually going to talk to her. Just don't make that think that she doesn't have any friends or anything, she just has had a lot of homework in the last couple weeks. As soon as he came over the first thing he asked was the classic conversation starter, which made her laugh a little inside. At least someone wanted to start a conversation with her. "I am alright, I guess. I have heaps of homework, unfortunately." She said with a smile on her face. After his funny comment about the weather and introducing himself she decided that she might as well try to make a new friend while she was actually was here. "Ashton, huh. The names Samantha but you can call me Sam."

At first Ashton was a little unsure of whether the girl would be receptive to his friendliness, but she responded without giving him any strange looks and so he knew a feeling of relief as he offered her a polite smile. Ash was a sociable enough guy but he also had some slight issues when it came to confidence. He might approach someone and say hello but there would be a moment in the time it took them to respond where he wondered whether it had been a good idea after all. Talking to this girl seemed to have been for the better, however, because now he didn't have to sit and stare into the fire grate for the next hour. "Burn it," he joked, gesturing to the crackling flames. He was only kidding of course. Ashton hated homework as much as the next person but he didn't think he'd ever have the bravery or the stupidity to toss it into the fire. He just wasn't too great when it came to his concentration. Ash was better at practical application compared to theory and so homework wasn't always the best thing for him unless it was some sort of hands-on project.
"Sam it is, then," he decided with a grin and a nod. If you ever gave Ashton a nickname and requested that he use it, it wasn't likely that the Earth leader would refuse. He aimed to please, after all. "Nice to meet ya, Sam." He wondered if she ever got teased with her nickname and compared to a guy--though, of course, Ashton himself would never do such a thing save for in the most light-hearted of situations. People had called him Ash the Pokemon Master for a little bit in the ninth grade. Sometimes it had been amusing and other times embarrassing all depending on who had used it and whether or not they were making fun of him or just trying to bring a smile to his face. In the Earth dormitories, it was thankfully the latter a majority of the time. "Have you been here long? It's surprising we haven't met." She looked around his age and he wondered if they were in any classes together--she certainly didn't seem like a classmate of his. Shrugging it off, he decided it didn't matter. Class wasn't exactly the most exciting thing to have in common with someone.
Wanting to make small talk to keep conversation going and stop himself from reflecting on how boring it could actually get in the dormitories, Ashton abandoned his attention from the fire and turned his emerald gaze completely over to his newfound friend. That is, if they would consider each other friends by the end of this. He certainly wouldn't mind a new friend but not even the Earth students were all full of sunshine and butterflies all the time. There were conflicts here, they were just more commonly solved with words than with violence. "What do you usually do on a day like this?" Perhaps it wasn't wise to revert the conversation back to the weather again but really, when the rain was practically torrential downpour he figured it was an interesting topic to discuss. And most people had rainy day rituals that they shared with family or friends. "Normally I'd make popcorn or watch movies but of course the dormitory wouldn't have a television and I hear they closed the mess hall. The staff sure love to ruin our fun. Who wants to be stuck inside doing homework when the sky's so miserable?" He shook his head as if to ask this of anyone was practically committing a crime.

Samantha couldn't help but laugh, the fact that someone one would even think about burning something was different to her. She had always hated most things to do with Fire, either it be the people that controlled the element or fire itself and the only person that she knew that had the fire element was really nice but other than that, hatred all around. Though she would never tell anyone else that! Sam didn't like starting stuff with people, unless she had a really, really, really good reason to and that hardly ever happened. Looking up toward the boy that she only just meet and wondered why he was even talking to her, considering no one really wanted to talk to her half the time anyways and she didn't really have many of those things that you called 'friends'. She always blamed it on the fact that she was kinda weird, but she didn't really know.
As soon as she heard him say something else, it really got her thinking. he looked around her age though she had never seen him in any of her classes. After thinking about his question for awhile she decided that she might as well bring a little humour into all of this. "What? Sitting here, around 20 minutes, just looking around randomly and waiting something good to happen." She said with a smile on her face, "At this school? Well, a couple years I guess. I am in my Twelfth Year, thank god!" If there was one thing that she couldn't wait for, that would be getting out of this school. Samantha had always wanted to independent from her parents and while she was here, she still felt like she was relying in their help to get through things. 'If only,' she began to think to herself as she looked back at the rain that was pouring down, 'can't wait to leave this place and live on my own!'
Her train of though was interrupted by hearing Ashton bring up the weather again. Apparently it was something that was really on his mind at this point in time. Though, in his defence, what he would usually do on a day like this sounded really good. That when she began to think would she would usually do during this type of day, considering this time last year she would just be hanging out with Marcus. "Not much, I think," Samantha began to say, wondering if what she would do sounded as fun as what he would do, "Read, maybe, even just playing a couple games would be fun."

Whenever the subject of the Fire element was seriously brought up around Ashton, he usually felt a little awkward. Unlike most Earth elementals that could honestly say that everyone in the element had been jerks toward them and that they could probably never get along, he'd be lying if he said that he couldn't stand the lot of them. Bad with relationships as he was, there had never been anything quite so stupid as Ashton trying to date a Fire girl. Asha Woods had been a fighter--she'd had a reputation at the school for violence. So why, then, had he ever given her a chance? Ashton was just a sucker for second chances. He'd paid for it when she'd simply vanished. One day they were hiding out in deserted corridors and kissing while the teachers hunted for skipping students, and the next she had just been gone. It had been a short-lived relationship, that was for sure. He couldn't even claim that they had ended it on good terms, or that it had broken off badly, because that was just it--they hadn't broken it off. She'd just left. I guess that's a good a break up as any, he sighed internally, but obviously did not bring it up. Instead, he focused on talking to the other Earth girl.
He chuckled slightly at her response. "Would you consider this good?" he wondered. It was said lightly but she could have answered seriously if she so wished. Ashton was the friendly type that would approach almost anyone whether they were deemed 'weird' by others or not--he let individuals prove themselves to him. Alright, so maybe after three years of bad experiences with Fire and Thunder both, they were exceptions to this rule. He didn't often approach them and usually did his best to avoid their kind. Especially after Asha, with whom he sort of wished he hadn't gotten involved. But Earth, Water, and Wind? They were fair game for friendliness. He hoped that Samantha didn't think that he was strange for coming off as so friendly. "Lucky," said Ashton with slight envy as she told him that she was in her final year. Then, noting that she'd sounded rather ecstatic about this, he inquired, "Wait--so you're not planning to stay on for college?" He sounded neither surprised or expectant. College wasn't for everyone, after all. He didn't know whether he would or not. It was certainly a tempting idea, but he wasn't sure what he wanted to do yet. "I'm only a junior," he explained. "Not quite top dog of the school!"
The fact that they were trapped inside of a castle should have meant that there was so much more to do on a rainy day here than there was at home. But actually, rainy days usually progressed almost as usual for the boarding students. It was a real pain when there was a blizzard outside and you still had to go to class when, if you'd attended public school, it would have been a snow day for sure. The day students have it good, he thought with mild amusement. But maybe not. He wasn't a day student, he didn't live in the Hollow, so he couldn't say for sure. "What kind of games?" he asked, sounding interested. "We might not have a television but I'm sure there are cards and board games and all sorts of stuff around here somewhere. Besides, anything's better than sitting around all day, right?" It was a clear offer to do something fun--he never really cared that he had just met a person, he'd treat them like he'd known them for a while if need be. It was just part of his friendly nature.

Samantha could tell that she had something that had set of a nerve within the guy sitting next to her. Looking toward Ashton she could tell that he had gone into a deep thought about something that she had said and all that she could think about was what she had said to make him 'black out' as she would say. Though she did have a feeling in the back of her head that it had had something to do with her bringing up the Fire elementals. She had only met one before this point and he had helped her, so she had a kind-of good look on them but Ashton just looked he had a massive hatred against them. As soon as she had come to this conclusion was she could tell that he had, sort of, come out of this little state when he decided to talk, though she couldn't help but laugh a little to herself when she had realized what he had said.
"I guess you could say that," Samantha said laughing a little to herself, "It is better than sitting on your own in a place in which you don't exactly come to very often." She was telling the truth, in her own way. she had only been in the Common Room itself a few times in the past, due to her living off campus and being a day student. Even though her parents really wanted her to start living in campus, there was no way in hell that that was going to happen. After saying what she had said about being in her last year and maybe not coming back, it really made her think when Ashton had questioned that. "I am not really sure if I am going to stay because I don't exactly know what I would want to major in." After thinking about it for awhile she just wondered about it, there wasn't much that she was good at when it came to school, so she continued, "I guess that I am just taking my time to find out what I want to do."
After hearing about what type of stuff that they actually have to do here she just wondered what she would actually do. She was used to just playing MMORPG's whenever she was home or had a good internet connection. "Anything is really better than nothing, don't you think," she said after thinking about it for awhile, "A card game would be really good right now, considering all the games I have been playing recently have been on my laptop or on the xbox. Did you wanna play something, if you have a packet of cards or something? I would be up for it." As soon as she said that she looked up to see Ashton wondering what he was thinking. If there was something that Sam liked to do with people that she had just met that would be trying to figure them out and she had to say that it was a little hard to do it so someone that was from the same element, that was for sure.

Green eyes were both surprised and intrigued at what Samantha had said. "Oh, so you're a day student?" It wasn't that he'd never met any of them before, but it was usually only the day students in his classes whom he was acquainted with. The boarding students of your own element were stuck with you inside of the school day and night so you generally got to know them on a much more personal level. "I'm honoured," he joked, "it's not often your kind grace us with your presence." Since his tone and his expression were light it was made pretty clear that Ashton was just being friendly. Asha had been a day student after all. Damn it, why did he always think about her? Must have been nice, living in one of the mansions in the better part of town. He knew that quite a few of the mansion folk were elementals but didn't know which ones and didn't know whether or not any of the others went to the Academy. He wasn't acquainted with very many rich people, after all. Ashton came from the comfortable area of the middle class.
"I'm a boarder," he said. "Do you live in the Hollow?" He couldn't think of any other way that she'd manage to be a day student. The next place closest to the Academy was several long hours away through winding roads and mountain paths. His home city of Vancouver was even further, hence the reason he only got to go home on holidays. "I'm from Vancouver," Ashton told Samantha, having no problems at all with admitting personal information about himself. The Earth boy had always been of the open and friendly personality. He wouldn't mind if someone else was a little more reserved in their behaviour but Ash himself didn't seem to have the ability to be closed off. Sometimes he fantasized about living up in the mountains with all of the nature surrounding him rather than in the cramped family home back in Vancouver. He didn't mind living with his parents and his little brother but sometimes he yearned for more space and freedom. At the same time, Ashton didn't think he could do that to his parents, moving out so soon. They wanted to hold on to him as long as possible.
"Same here," he smiled when she confessed she didn't know what she'd major it. It felt nice to know he was the only one confused about that kind of thing. At least he had another full year before he had to make any sort of decision. Time was running out for Sam. "Best of luck, though," he added earnestly. He nodded with enthusiasm when she asked if there were any cards about, holding up a finger to say he'd be right back. It was to his own dormitory that he retreated for a moment, rifling through a box of possessions until he pulled out a standard pack of red Bicycle playing cards. They were a few months old but looked brand new and in fact hadn't been opened before. He opened them now and extracted the jokers before shuffling and pulling the table closer to where he and Sam were sitting. "What game do you want to play?" he asked, not looking at the cards as he separated and shuffled them again. He wasn't a cheater and he wanted to make sure that this was fair on both sides. He wished that he could do the fancy sort of card shuffling where they flew into the air and landed in a stack but he was sure if he tried the room would be full of scattered stray cards and he wasn't running the risk of any of them landing in the fire. So he looked quizzically at Sam and halted in his shuffling.

From the way that Ashton had expressed his last question, she was both sad but amused at the same time. It wasn't very often that someone made some sort of deal out of her bring only a day student, though there weren't to many of them to be honest. Sam looked up and moved her head toward the younger earth boy, "I guess that day student don't really come to the dorm to often, do they?" she asked laughing just a little bit under her breathe, even though it was very noticeable that she had done so. Thought what he said really brought her over the edge. She couldn't help but place one hand on the other and try her best not to burst out laughing. "You should be..." She said in a joking tone of voice, you could tell that she was really joking when she said that. "I usually just come here when I want a little peace, home is very chaotic at the moment with dad and his new job." Sam said as she began to think about her father rushing around there home trying to get all his new ideas and sketches for his next big movie project, or whatever.
His next question did throw her just a little bit at that point. Other than people wanted to come to her house to study and such, mainly being either Nell or Aramina, not really people that she had just met. But wanted to really get to know the earth boy that was sitting beside so she looked back at him and smiled. "I live around that area with my parents. More around the Middle Class Residences." She admitted hoping that he wouldn't feel weird around her now that he knew where she lived. She kinda felt a little weird once she found out that he was from Vancouver, come where were she hadn't been before. "That is so cool, I have never been there before!" Sam admitted with a smile on her face, "I am from Australia, Adelaide to be a little more specific." Shen then continued trying to make what was left of her accent stand out just a little bit.
As soon as he asked her what game she wanted to play she was a little stumped. There were about 50 different card game types going around her head at this point and to be honest, it began to give her a headache but there was one that did stand out in her mind, a card game that she hadn't played in quite a while. "I don't really know, why don't we play snap?" Sam asked wondering if he would even want to play that type of game. It was something that Sam herself used to play quiet a lot when she lived with her brother, but now he was at university and she didn't get to see him very often. "But if you don't want to that is fine." She added hoping that he wouldn't think that he had to play if he didn't want to.

Ashton chuckled slightly and shook his head at the question. "Nah," he replied. "Sometimes they hang out at lunch to do school work but as they don't have to sleep here..." He trailed off and allowed the rest to be inferred. He sometimes envied the day students the ability to just leave campus at the end of the day and go home to their family. He missed his own family sometimes. Vancouver, however, was much too far to make the daily trip even if he did have a car. His emerald eyes sparkled with interest when Samantha mentioned her father but also sympathy. His own home life wasn't too bad but it sometimes seemed a lot worse than it was because of the lack of space. He had to share a room with his brother and their kitchen had barely enough room to squeeze in the table. "Oh, really? What does he do?" Then, once again displaying the fact that he was very open and honest about himself Ashton said, "My Dad's a mechanic so most of the stuff he does is away from home." They lived on a tight budget with Ana doing her writing and his father with a low-income job. His mother was in the process of writing another book but they had no way of knowing how well it would sell when it was finished.
He wasn't surprised as she confirmed that she lived in Maple Hollow but he nodded nonetheless to show that he'd heard. He had a lot of friends that lived there. When she mentioned that she was Australian, though, a grin spread across his face. "Australia? That's so neat! I was wondering where your accent was from," he admitted with a bit of a laugh. He was very open with questions to other people but he'd been trying to distinguish it himself before he gave up and asked her. It seemed that she'd beat him to the punch, though. "I'm no good with things like that, unfortunately." He'd confuse England with Ireland, Australia with New Zealand. Accents and their placement had never been his strong point. "Is it nice there?" he asked, genuinely intrigued. All he knew about Australia was kangaroos and koala bears. It would be nice to hear it from someone that had actually lived there before. "When did you move?"
He really didn't have a card game in mind when he'd asked and that was why he'd decided to see if she did. "Sure," he said, then slid the shuffled deck of cards over to her so that she could handle them. "I don't know how to play but I'm always up for learning." He loved to learn new things and games to play. Learning a card game was a lot less productive than learning the things that they were taught in school but since it was more fun it was much easier to keep Ashton's attention. This was probably why he'd never been a straight A student. He simply wasn't interested enough in his school work to put forth the effort and he didn't really regret it either. It wasn't like he had a lifes ambition to be a doctor or a lawyer or anything else that involved a lot of time, effort, and grades. Maybe a gardener or something else to do with his element.

As soon as Ashton asked Samantha what her father did she became just that little bit more worried than usual. Before this conversation she used to tell anyone what her father does for a living but then they would really over try to be her friends so that they could get closer to her father. Many a good friends had been broken, in the past, due to this and this was something that she really hadn't done for a while. Looking toward Ashton, she could see that he was just curious about her family situation and he also didn't look like the type that would be-friend her due to her fathers career. Sighing she looked toward her and stated, "My father hey," She started not wondering how she was going to tell him, as soon as she knew Sam then continued, "His is a director, though I don't really talk to him that much. He is always off somewhere, shooting something or rather." Though as soon as her explanation left her mouth she wondering how Ashton would take being given this new information.
His reaction to where she came from was something of a surprise to her, other people that she had been told had always wondered what types of snakes and spiders she had seen when she lived there. After hearing that he wanted to know what Australia is like she couldn't help but laugh a little to herself. Most people thought that Australians ride Kangaroo's to school and that we have pet Koala's just lying around the house. It was nice just to have someone ask her what it was like to actually live then asking about the animals and stuff. "Australia is really nice, mainly around this time of year as well. It is just starting to get hot, people are starting to go to the beach more and more and I would be starting to get reading for a really hot Christmas at this point." She explained to the earth boy who looked like he was about to laugh just as she had just been. "I loved it over there but it is still nice to be here though. What about Vancouver, I have been told that it is cold over there. " She explained, trying to make the situation a little lighter. "I moved here a couple years ago with my parents, my brother is a border at a university far away but I did live in England for a little while. Meet heaps of cool people around there. What about you? When did you come here?" She asked wondering, just as much as he had, about when the other had come to this place.
As soon as Ashton had said that he didn't know how to play 'snap' she could help but laugh a little to herself. Picking up the deck of cards, she began to shuffle to deck, while doing so she began to explain the game. "I used to play this game all the time with my brother when ever we went travelling. What you do is that you get half of the deck and I get the other. One by one be put a card down and if the two cards makes a pair you need to put your hand on the pile and yell 'SNAP!'. The person who's hand is on top has to put the pile in their half of the deck. First person to have no cards left is the winner." As soon as she finished talking the deck was in two halves and they were ready to start playing. "You ready?"

Ashton definitely wasn't the type of person that tried to befriend people for reasons other than pure friendship. He had dated Asha Woods, very rich daughter of a very rich family, and though he'd been blown away by the size of the house and the car she drove he'd only hung around her because he (had thought that he) loved her, not because he wanted to leech off her money. His green eyes sparkled when Sam informed him of her fathers work but it was more out of intrigue than desire. "That's really neat," he said. "Do you get along when he is home, though?" His brow furrowed slightly and a frown pursed his lips as he considered the thought of having a parent that was never home. He didn't know what he would do if Analynn or Dustin were never home. His mother was home all of the time being that she was a writer and his father came home every evening even on work days. He went out to drink with friends sometimes but he never came home drunk because he didn't want to alarm the kids--that was what he'd told his son when Ashton had asked why he returned so early from beer nights. "Sorry if I'm asking too many questions," Ashton apologised with a smile. "My mother's a writer so I've never had to worry about that."
His eyes were wide with surprise when she told him that it was getting hot out just now, thinking of how in Canada it was steadily getting colder. He'd heard about some countries and areas that got winter the opposite side of the year but he'd never taken the time to consider what it must be like for the people that lived there. "A green Christmas? I've never had one of those before," he mused. His first thought was that Christmas would be awfully strange without all of the snow and winter but then he reminded himself that it probably felt strange for Sam to see the usually hot months covered in a blanket of white over here. "Is it weird having to get used to the weather here?" he asked her. He wasn't sure how he'd fare if he went to Australia because he'd never been before. She asked him about moving and he chuckled softly. "I was born here in Canada, though not in Vancouver," he said. "We used to live in Whistler but we moved to a bigger house when my Mom's book started to sell well." The house was still cramped as standards went but compared to the tiny little house Ashton had grown up in it was an improvement. Unlike Asha he'd never grown up in grandeur. The opposite, really.
Ashton listened attentively to Samantha's explanation so that he did not have to ask her to repeat it when she was done. He knew how annoying it could be when you had to explain something to a person over and over again and he did not want to be that guy. Thankfully it was a pretty easy explanation to grasp and the Earth elemental nodded when she was through with it. "I think I got it," he said cheerfully. He'd heard of games like it but he'd never known a name to label them with and he'd never actually played before. Usually when he played cards it was with his brother who had no idea how to play many things outside of Crazy Eights or Go Fish. "Ready!" Ashton grinned at her as he took his half of the deck and pulled the card off the top, placing it down.

As Sam began to think about it she really didn't know about her relationship with her father, just recently anyways. He had been busy with his latest project that really didn't have much time to get together and do anything, really. All she could really do was base what she was going to say on the experiences that she had had in the past. "I guess that I do, when he is at home. He is a pretty cool guy." she said with a smile one her face while looking up toward the roof and laughing a little to herself once she had heard what Ashton had said next, "No worries, it is nice to know that someone wants to know someone else better." Sam said wondering why he had even said that in the first place. For her if you wanted to get to know someone then what a better way than to annoy the hell out of them by asking question after question and wanting them to answer, and she wasn't joking when she thought that. "A writer, hey," Sam started and before she began she wondered what it would actually be like to write for a living, "That would be pretty awesome do to, what book has she written?" She asked wonder if she had even read one of her books before.
At this point she was really trying not to fall of her chair from laughing so hard. I was weird for her the first time that she had had a Christmas in Canada because she was used to going to the beach or something on Christmas day. "Well, you could say that it is more like a brown Christmas because it is half way through summer." Sam stated hoping that Ashton would get what she was trying to say, even though most people that she had tried to explain this too really didn't. Though she really did have to think a little bit more about his next question once it had been asked, "It was defiantly hard when we first came over here, as the seasons are in a complete reverse here to what Australia is in, but I am slowing getting used to it. The only difference is the fact that it doesn't snow, at all, in Australia." She said in a laughing sort of tone, she wondered how some people would last if they ever went back to her home town.
As soon as Ashton said that he had got the explanation that she had told him she couldn't help but sigh with relief, she wasn't really good at this type of stuff or at least explaining this to people as she would usually tell them way to much information or not enough information. Once Ashton said that he was ready she looked over at the card that he had placed down and she couldn't wait to start. It had been quite a while since she was little and traveling with her brother and parents. Placing another card on top of see that it wasn't the same she looked back up and waited for Ashton to play his next card.

Ashton supposed that everyone adjusted to their own situations at home. If your parents were always out you had no choice but to get used to that and love them anyway, right? He didn't have any experiences with which to relate but it was at least good to hear that her father's job didn't ruin her relationship with him. He smiled his thanks when she dismissed his concerns and apologies, glad that she wasn't offended. Ashton was always asking questions and keeping up chatter when he wanted to hang around someone and get to know them. Just as Samantha had said, it really did help the process of building a friendship. However, not everyone appreciated someone asking so many persistent and annoying questions about their lives and so he figured he'd ask just to make sure. When she inquired about his mother's resume he listed off the books of her that had gotten published. "The last one was a bestseller," he said with a hint of pride. He loved his mother and it was nice to see her do well, "so you might have heard of it. I'm not sure if it sold internationally, though." Maybe it had. Probably. Bestsellers did that. He'd just never thought to ask his mother questions like that before. At any rate, that book was how they'd paid for their current home.
He laughed at the comment about brown Christmas, evidently amused by it. He had a good sense of humour and appreciated that kind of thing in others, as well. It was pretty easy to make him laugh, really. "You have a point," he concluded. Sometimes Canada got really hot in the summer as well and if it didn't rain in a while the grass would start to change colour and go dry. There were heat waves, too, which was horrible. "Are the summers very hot there?" he asked as the thought came to mind. A lot of people assumed that Canada was cold and snowy year-round but that wasn't true so he wasn't going to base his opinions on Australia off of stereotypes. It was always best to just ask someone that had lived in the country for a weather report. "It doesn't snow?" This seemed to surprise Ashton, judging by his tone and the way that his emerald eyes widened. He was so used to snow every single winter that he was amazed by the thought of going without it. "Does it even get cold at all?" He didn't think he'd like a snowless winter--the cold of Canadian winters in his opinion was only bearable because there was snow to play around in and have snowball fights with.
He was still thinking about the lack of snow, so when he put down another card and it matched Samantha's he didn't realise until several seconds too late. "Just my luck," he said, sounding more amused than upset by this. He wasn't a sore loser in any respect. The Earth elemental usually played games to have fun rather than to win. He'd never been a fierce competitor--in his mind, he wasn't good enough at anything to strive for the top. He didn't have low self-esteem but Ashton also lacked the ego that it took to be truly good at something. If you didn't believe you could do something, chances were you'd never be able to do it. Card games weren't too hard, though, and he was certainly more focused the next time a match came around. Reflex kicked in and he put his hand down and said triumphantly, "Snap!" It felt good to actually accomplish something and he grinned. However, he had not forgotten the conversation with Sam and so he continued it with, "Have you ever been in a snowball fight?"

She really hadn't spent to much time in Canada to know much about the weather around here but she definitely knew about the weather back in her hometown of Adelaide. "The summer can get really hot," she started just as she began to remember the summer that had a 3 week long heat wave and half way through their home air conditioner decided to poop itself, "It can get from 45 to 50 degrees Celsius out side during the summers, or 113 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit." Sam wondered which one Ashton was more familiar with so she just said both but after being asked stuff like this a few times before she did know it off my heart. "Nope," Sam said laughing a little to herself, "The first time I ever saw snow was just as we landed in Canada." That was very true even though no-one really believed her considering she did spend most of her school life in England but the truth of the matter was that she would always go back home during the times when it snowed. "It can get really cold when it wants to be." Sam said knowing far too well about this type of stuff, "I can get as low as -10 degrees Celsius or 14 degrees Fahrenheit. One night it rained all night and it was that cold in the morning that all the water froze, it was awesome." She said laughing to herself hoping that she wouldn't seem really weird in front of her new friend.
As soon as Ashton had gotten the 'snap' as looked to see the smile on his face and she couldn't help but smile. It always made her happy when she knew that other people where having fun and being happy themselves. "Good one!" She said smiling back at the boy that was just watching her take the pile of cards from under his hand, as soon as she shuffled her now bigger pile she placed another card down and couldn't help but think about Ashton newest question just a little bit. "Never really been a proper snow fight before, but I have seen a couple happen here and there around the academy." Even though she was telling the truth she could help but smile. If she got one thing from her mother it was the fact that she was super competitive when it came to games like that.

Celsius was definitely the weather system with which Ashton was most familiar and his mouth dropped open a little when she explained just how hot that it could get in Australia. Even though Canadian summers could get heat waves and bad weather this was heat unlike anything he experienced on a regular basis. Heck, he didn't even think that their heat waves got that bad. Ashton knew that humidity could often factor into things and make it feel hotter than it actually was but that didn't change the fact that Austalia sounded like a sauna to him right about now. "Weather in the forties is high here," he said, clearly shocked. He wondered how they managed to live in such heat but then concluded that they were probably as used to it as the Canadian natives were to the snow that they got. It didn't really get too cold over there, though, and he chuckled a little at that. "It can get as bad as minus forty in the winter in some places but British Columbia isn't too bad." He knew that the opposite coast was worse in terms of their winter weather but that didn't mean that British Columbia was warm and sunny during the winter. "Of course, Vancouver doesn't get too much snow," he said. "It's mostly rain and storms during the winter with a few snowfalls but I'm originally from Whistler and they definitely got more. Maple Hollow gets a lot of it."
He chuckled and took a mocking bow which was somewhat awkward considering he was sitting down and so could not do it properly. "Thank you, thank you," Ashton said dramatically. Though he might not have been the most mature person in the world his goofing off and sense of fun often drew people to him with his cheery personality. He was a good person to have around when you were looking for enjoyment and a valuable friend. He had been told by some of his friends that they really liked being around him when they were upset because his constantly high spirits lifted theirs. To Ashton, this was one of the best compliments that could be recieved. He loved helping his friends more than anything. "Really? Well, then," he said decisively, "this winter I will make it my goal to pelt you with snow and drag you into one!" It was said jokingly and he was grinning to show that he meant no harm but he definitely would have a snowball fight with her if she was up to it.
