As Nell silently descended the stairs to start on breakfast, she gave herself a mental pat on the back for waking up before Josh and doing so without disturbing him. It wouldn't have been the most graceful thing to watch, what with her slowly sliding over and turning herself so she could place her feet on the floor before slithering down out of the covers. The most majestic part must have been her creeping barefoot across the floor and exiting the room, wincing at the gentle click when she closed the door behind her. She'd paused a few moments and listened close to make sure that he didn't get up. Not knowing how long she had, when she got down she hurried in getting everything she needed out from the cabinets. She started working on batter, making pancakes from scratch, working on getting out he ingredients for all the other breakfast necessities. Eggs sitting in the bowl ready to be cracked open, bacon sizzling in the skiller already, bread for toast once she got halfway through everything else. Her favorite thing she had hidden under the sink in an inncouous bag, which she pulled out after setting the pans on the stove. From the bag, she retrieved heart-shaped cookiecutters and placed them out on the pan before pouring the pancake batter. The commotion and smell of cooking food had the animals curious and around her legs in no time, ready for breakfast. Nell set out the food, urging them to stay at their own dishes as the cats sometimes liked to steal from the others' bowls. From then on it was deft multi-tasking and clock checking to make sure that she wasn't taking too long. She didn't want to screw anything up, but she didn't want her husband to wake up and spoil the surprise. The giddiness had her rocking back on the heels of her feet, feeling herself wake up as she worked on the pancakes, carefully lifting off the cookiecutters and turning the pancakes over. She'd been thinking about their anniversary for a while now. Since the beginning of October, as a matter of fact, when she first began working on her present. The fact that they'd been married for so long already had her gut squeezing pleasantly. A year spent as Joshua Dale's wife, Nell Dale. A year spent with the rings on her finger, glimmering in the light of the kitchen as she flipped the bacon over. A year since she felt like she would faint as she walked down the aisle, her father's arm perhaps the only thing that held her up. She remembered the nerves, but more than that she remembered how she felt when she faced Josh at the alter and promised her eternal love to him. That day had been perfect, one time she could remember with clarity that she had been happy in every single way. Putting the bread in the toaster, she headed out back, shivering with a chill. It may not have been wise to be out in just a tanktop and pajama pants, but she didn't feel any need to get dresssed. Pulling up the legs of her pants, she tiptoed over to where she had hidden her present. Extreme measures had been taken to hide it from Josh, because she couldn't be sure of where he would be at any time. Who knew what he would get into when he was in the house? This way, she knew there wouldn't be a chance of him discovering it. She waved a hand over the spot that she hoped she had buried it, the dirt pushing off and aside, revealing a little contained. She lifted it out and covered it back up with the dirt and opened the container, her present carefully contained in plastic wrap in case dirt got into the container. Heading back inside, Nell placed the vase of gardenias and roses on the table. They were folded paper, origami looking a lot like petals. And on the petals, handwritten words scrawled across the white paper on both sides, in a cramped cursive style. The toast popped out while Nell busied herself with adjusting her "flowers" in the vase, and she went back to work on the food, turning down burners to a very low heat and making sure that everything was cooked evenly and right. The pancakes came out perfectly, golden with brown edges and she had to say, she never felt prouder of any meal she had cooked. Keeping the food warm as she headed back up to the room, she was once again on tip-toes, quietly pushing the door open and smiling when she saw Josh still sleeping. She felt that pleasant tingling whenever she saw him, and also the rush of excitement from the fact that she had actually pulled all this off. She had been sure that the man would wake up in the middle of it all, come downstairs and she would have forgiven him for finding out a little too early about what she was doing. Of course, after kicking him out of the kitchen to wait. But now she needed him to wake up, and there were several ways she could have gone about it. She could have been sweet about it, kissed his forehead and cooed in his ear, but her enthusiasm got the better of her as she stood at the side of the bed. With one leap, she jumped onto the bed like an eager child waking parents up on Christmas morning.
