It was March, the weather was still really cold, and Sandra was enjoying life, thanks very much. Then again, she was almost always enjoying life, so that was kind of like saying she was breathing -- duh. Speaking of breathing, she inhaled the fresh air as she stepped off of the bus, in the meanwhile shoving her hands further into the pockets of her winter coat. Yep, still freezing. Sandra burrowed her face into her jacket but made no effort to quicken her pace in the hopes of reaching the warmth of the apartment any faster -- she was enjoying herself all the same. It wasn't too bad at all when she was bundled up, anyway! She was actually starting to contemplate stopping by the usual ice cream parlour for something -- because ice cream was fitting for any time of year, and how dare anyone suggest otherwise -- but decided against it, mostly because her wallet couldn't take the hit, despite the job that she was expecting to start soon; it really wasn't fair for her parents to be paying for everything anymore now that she was in the same boat as Matthew.
There were a few people around on the street, but it was a strange hour of the early evening and so most people still had work and what-not. To be fair, of course, the town was considerably emptier now that there were only elementals left, but there should have still been more people than this around. Either way there were only a few people for whatever reason, including one woman up ahead who was walking her dog. The dog seemed kind of hyperactive but Sandra still watched it with nothing short of adoration -- she just kind of loved puppies -- though she was kind of disturbed when, all of a sudden, she saw the dog lurch forward with a sudden burst of speed. The leash caught around the ankles of a man up ahead and made him fall over, but the woman and her puppy were gone with a few apologies called back without much concern about this man's well-being. Eep. Sandra hurried ahead to check if he was okay, only to find that she actually recognized him. "Nurse Avery?" she asked, too surprised to ask if he was alright first. She squatted next to where he was still on the ground, however, giving him a quizzical look. "Are you okay? What happened?" Her eyes moved to his forehead. "I think you're bleeding," she told him squeakily, gesturing only vaguely at his forehead. It looked like just a scrape, but still -- ow. Plus, the sidewalk was salted and what-not. Hopefully that hadn't gotten into the open wound.
(this... really sucks, i'm sorry. :c)

It really wasn’t a secret that Avery was clumsy. He could be walking on the world’s smoothest walking area and he’d somehow manage to trip over nothing and plant his face into the ground. It’s not like there was anything wrong with him, it was sometimes just hard to keep his balance. And not trip over rocks. Or nothing. Come to think about it, Avery probably wasn’t the most reliable of people—which was strange, he thought, because he was a nurse and most people did rely on him. Point is, he’s a clumsy person. So clumsy, that he stocked up on first aid kits in his house regularly, you know, just in case. You can never be too careful! Especially since he’s ran out on his supply.
… yeah. Avery and sleepiness didn’t go well together.
Okay, the story went like this: he’d ran out of first aid kits awhile ago. Avery had used the last of it on his knees. From that experience, he realized it wasn’t a good idea to walk around in his apartment naked when the power went out. Things could get hurt. But that’s getting off topic; that happened over a month ago. What happened today would probably be considered normal for Avery—only this time, he didn’t have any first aid kits to help patch himself up afterwards. He’d accidentally fallen asleep on his couch right when he got home from his shift, and well, let’s just say Avery moved around a lot when he was sleeping and he’d just bought a new coffee table that he put right in front of his couch. Needless to say, there was tons of cursing. And tearing up. But only tearing up. Avery didn’t cry. Much. At least he made it to the store before they closed for the day. Avery bought his usual supply of first aid kits, vowing never to forget to restock them ever again, and patched himself up in the store’s bathroom before leaving. It was quite cold out, but he honestly didn’t want to head back to his apartment so soon, so he did what he did best—he wandered, having no particular destination in mind as he did so.
Oh, and it also wasn’t a secret that he had bad luck. He’d be walking down the streets and a flying pot of flowers could come crashing down at his feet and it’d be normal for him. At least he hasn’t died. Yet. So Avery didn’t think much of it when a puppy ran up to him, its tongue flapping in the wind as it did so. He smiled at, kneeling down so he could pet it when it went up to him, but as the puppy came closer, closer, and closer, he realized the puppy wasn’t going to stop anytime soon in its rampage. Avery stood up hastily, not wanting to be the target of a hyperactive dog, but it was too late. The puppy ran in circles around him, wrapping his legs with its leash, and before he knew it, Avery lost balance and face planted into the sidewalk. Again. Ow.
He waited, almost expecting the owner to come rushing up to him and help him up, but when he peeked open his eyes, Avery witnessed the owner and puppy run around the corner, not looking back once. Instead, he was met with a familiar voice saying his name. He looked up, rubbing at his nose. “Oh, hello, Sandra~” Avery chirped brightly as if nothing just happened. He sat up, his cheeky grin on his face, but internally he groaned. His face hurt. He ignored her question though, not wanting to worry her, but tilted his head at her next sentence. “I am?” Avery touched his forehead warily, looking down at his now stained fingers. He groaned, flopping down on his back onto the sidewalk, grumbling again about his bad luck. “Just leave me here to diiiiiiiie.” Yup. That was the life of Avery Kael—self proclaimed nurse.

Somehow it didn't surprise her that Nurse Avery would hurt himself, becauser seriously, the man was much worse than her when it came to this kind of thing. Sandra was just easily distracted -- but Nurse Avery... he just had bad luck and pretty lousy coordination. She just thought it was cute, of course -- the nurse was cute in general, honestly, he was so silly -- but she imagined that it did make things difficult when he tripped over his own feet or something like that. Of course, this time it had been the puppy, not Avery himself, but that wouldn't make him feel any better, she was sure. "Hi Nurse Avery!" she greeted happily, somewhat amused by how perky he looked despite having just landed on his face. Ouch. "You are!" she confirmed, nodding, wincing a little bit in sympathy when he touched his hand to his forehead. Ouch, that couldn't be fun. "I think maybe you shouldn't do that, you might infect it or something!" she squeaked, then paused for a second. "But I dunno, I'm not a nurse." She sighed, then looked at him suspiciously. "But you are, you should know these things!"
She was startled when he suddenly flopped back onto the ground, probably hurting himself more in the process. Oh no. "Noooo," she said, her voice carrying a slightly nagging, whining tone, but she just didn't want him to be seriously hurt or anything. That would be bad. "No, come with me," she said, sighing a little bit. She reached down, grabbed both of his hands, and dragged him to his feet -- a difficult task considering how much bigger he was, and how shrimpy Sandra pretty much was. "Come on, we need to patch up your head," she said, liking how her voice sounded so official and Nurse-Avery-like. She looped her arm into his and started pulling him off in the direction of the nearby park -- there would be benches there to sit on and what-not. "What did that puppy have against you?" she asked, confused -- puppies were cute, Nurse Avery was cute, it should have been a loving relationship of cute things, not the viciousness of tripping people. "Um... um... What's the first thing you usually do to patch things up?" she asked -- she may have sounded like a nurse for a split second, but she certainly was not actually one. "Oh! Clean it? And like... antiseptic? Is that right?" She had been in the medical wing and under the nurse's care too often, but Sandra had apparently never paid attention.
(sorry it's a lot shorter. :3;;;)

He wasn’t proud of his inability to function like a human being. Avery was pretty sure normal people didn’t hurt themselves as often as he did. He knew he wasn’t normal and he liked that fact… until he got onto the subject of luck. Avery had none, that’s for sure. Or maybe the Gods above enjoyed making his life a comical hell on earth. He liked that one. But it was most likely that animals hated him, even though he loved them so much. “I hope you’re not hurting yourself as often as I’ve been,” he chirped, still rubbing at his nose. If there were ever a competition as to who hurt themselves the most, Avery was sure that he and Sandra would have a very close races. At least he’s seen her every other week in his office. At least. He didn’t mind, though; he quite liked the company. Sandra was like a female version of himself—only cuter and he hoped, more naïve and innocent. Avery… was probably the complete opposite. Except he was still cute. “I can’t think straight, I’m suffering though blood loss right now~” he whined as she gave him a look. Actually, scratch that. He rarely ever thought straight. Just this time, it was harder when he felt the warm liquid slipping from his body.
“Yesssssss,” he said, matching Sandra’s tone. He didn’t want to get up. He just wanted to lay here and contemplate his life thus far and how he’s survived the cruel world and how puppies are evil and how everyone’s out to get him and, and, and… “Noooo,” Avery whined again as she began to tug at his hands in an attempt to get him up. He’d rather stay on the ground. It was more comfortable than standing, and whoa, head rush. Avery leaned against her slightly, surprised she even managed to get him up in the first place. “Yes, Nurse Sandra!” Avery saluted obediently, laughing at the whole situation together. Normally it was him who worried about Sandra, not the other way around. Oh, well. As long as she didn’t make him a mummy, he’ll be okay with whatever she did to him. It was a good thing Avery had a first aid kit on hand, too. “I don’t know,” he admitted, pouting as he rubbed at his nose again. “I was just walking along all happily and all of a sudden it comes running at me out of nowhere. I thought it wanted me to pet it, but I think it just wanted me to diiiiie,” he explained thoroughly, his voice lazy and drawn out. Avery probably sounded drunk.
He watched her face, amused, at how she sounded so nurse-like. “I think I’m rubbing off on you~” Which was probably a bad thing. He was a bad influence to adolescents. “First, Nurse Sandra, wipe off the blood,” Avery instructed, holding out the bag in his hand in front of her face. “Then the antiseptic.” It wasn’t the best part, but he was sure Sandra understood that, considering how many wipes he had to use on her on a daily basis. “I rely on you to keep me alive, nurse,” he said seriously, his face suddenly poker faced. “My life is in your hands.” Because face planting into the cement by an evil dog was so life threatening.

Sandra sighed and shook her head quickly, indicating that no, she had not, although of course she didn't know how often he had been hurting himself lately. "Nope! I've been so good! Barely tripped or fallen asleep standing and falling over or anything," she said as if very proud of this accomplishment, which was a little bit sad. She was just kidding, mostly, but she had done these sorts of things before. "I bet you miss me in the medical wing. Admit it, you and the other nurses tooootally miss me when I'm not there," she teased. She wondered if they did. She'd missed Nurse Avery, that was for sure. It had been a couple of weeks since she'd been in there, actually, which was a long time for her. "Nurse Aaaaaveryyyyyy," she whined at him right back, though she hoped that he really wasn't suffering from blood loss. That would be really worrying -- she could only do so much to help him. She didn't even have a car to drive him to an actual hospital or anything.
It was a struggle to get him back up. She was surprised too, when she managed to do it -- Sandra wasn't a particularly strong person. Then again, he wasn't struggling any particular amount, even if he did seem quite resistant -- mostly it was more like dead weight than someone actually fighting against her pulling power. "Noooo," she called back even as she struggled with him, eventually getting him up into a standing position. "C'mon, Nurse Avery," she said firmly, looping her arm with his elbow so that she could better help him as he leaned against her. This really did feel backwards. Usually she was the one who came into the hospital wing -- though generally she didn't ask to be left to bleed to death, of course. She was typically pretty good about her misfortunes and these minor injuries that came with them. "I don't think it wanted you to die," she told him, though of course she didn't know. "Maybe he was just overexcited! And like, y'know, overshot the distance and then got confused! Just a misunderstanding!" She hoped that was the case, because otherwise that puppy was evil, and Sandra liked to believe that baby animals were never so cruel.
Was it worrying if she was starting to act like Nurse Avery? No, she didn't think so. "That's good!' she chirped, unaware that he thought quite differently. "I mean you're my favourite nurse, so that's like a huge compliment." She giggled a little, breaking the formal nurse facade. She really wasn't very good at it -- Sandra would be, in actuality, a terrible nurse. "Wipe off the blood," she repeated, sighing as if in disappointment. "I really wanted to make your forehead sting with antiseptic as soon as possible." She was just kidding, of course. That would be cruel beyond belief and she didn't know why she would do such a thing just to cause pain. Antiseptic was for healing, not hurting. Her real problem was that, yeah, wiping blood off of an open wound was hardly a fun thing to do. "Okay, I can do that," she said, setting her face seriously in determination as she took the bag and looked around in the first aid kit for what she was looking for. She sat him down on a park bench before setting to work.
With the utmost concentration, as if she really were about to perform open heart surgery instead of just patching up a scrape, she wiped the blood carefully from his head. It was difficult to do so when he was talking, though -- she found herself giggling and she withdrew her hand so that she wouldn't accidentally poke him or something."You're going to live, Nurse Avery," she said firmly. "You're safe in my hands! And this is a routine procedure." It literally was. Usually the roles were reversed, but this was something they went through all the time. "There! Gotcha," she said once she was satisfied with the job she'd done of, well, cleaning up his face. "Antiseptic now? Feel the burn!" she "commanded" in what would have been an almost cruel voice if she weren't laughing like a maniac while saying it.

Avery was a little skeptical when she said she hadn’t hurt herself lately. He playfully raised an eyebrow at her, unable to believe her. “Really?” he asked, stretching out the vowels. It just didn’t seem possible Sandra wasn’t not hurt. She was like… the younger, girl version of him. Avery did smile though at her next comment, rolling his eyes. “Oh, totally. I miss you with every fiber of my being when you’re not there with me~” Okay. He did have to admit it was kind of lonely in his office. He was so used to having Sandra barge in with a new injury, the same bright and innocent smile on her face every time, despite the pain. Sigh. Was it bad that he wished for Sandra to get hurt more often? Probably. But he was bored. “Whaaaaaat?” he whined back, pouting. Avery just wanted to lay here and contemplate his life thus far and how he managed to survive when so many things were after him.
Was Sandra getting strong or was he getting weaker? He shook his head. In any case, she got him up from the ground after he proclaimed to want death. Avery whined slightly, leaning more heavily against her—though that was more out of laziness than anything—and dragged his feet along with her. “Where are you taking me?” he asked in such a way that made him feel like he was being kidnapped. The thought made him chuckle. Sandra? Kidnapping someone? She’d probably be a good kidnapper though; no one would suspect it were her. But then again, she was horrible with lying. And if they were trying to escape, he was pretty sure Sandra would trip all over the place… yeah. Nevermind. “Liiiiiies!” he exclaimed, pouting. “It didn’t even hesitate to trip me. You didn’t see the look in its eyes!” Avery flailed his arms, trying to make his point valid. “All animals want me to diiiiiie.” Just last week a pigeon nearly pecked his eyes out. And just before that, his neighbor’s cat climbed up his leg just to bat at his face with its claws. Maybe it wasn’t a smart idea to invest in pet animals. All they’d do was betray him. Sniffle.
He blinked at her as she complimented him. Rarely anyone did, so it was a nice… change? Avery wondered if she was being sarcastic. In any case, he smiled brightly at her, ruffling her hair. “D’aww~” he cooed. “Though I don’t think I’d be a good role model,” he pointed out, chuckling. Avery absolutely shuddered at the idea. He’d teach her all the wrong things but she’d gratefully take it in. It’d be like corrupting someone who wasn’t aware of it. An innocent, little bunny. Nope. He was not going to be responsible for that. “You evil little girl!” Okay, he takes back the statement of her innocence. Avery looked at her horrified, suddenly questioning himself if it were a good idea to let Sandra even touch him. He sat down obediently though, and kept a wary eye on her.
Avery tried his hardest not to laugh as he watched her face twist into concentration. It was like she was performing surgery on him—though Avery would never, ever let that happen. Even if she made it through medical school and was highly regarded as a surgeon. With his luck, he’d be the one she’d mess up on. “Accidentally.” He shuddered. Just to spite her, though, he winced, his face twisting into unreal pain as she wiped away his blood. “It better be. Or you’d be paying for my funeral,” he joked, staying perfectly still just in case she spasmed and he just so happened to turn his head at the right moment for her to jam her fingers into his eye. Highly unlikely, but was possible. “…” Avery looked on, staring at her as she laughed. Was she… did he really want to… he sighed, cautiously handing her the antiseptic wipes. “You’re not going to jam those into my eyes, right?”

She didn't blame him for being skeptical, but Sandra just smiled the same as ever, looking perfectly innocent. "Really," she confirmed with a nod. "I haven't been doing much though, so that's probably why, but!" She waved her arms around in the air a little as if trying to physically explain the way she hadn't managed to hurt herself. She didn't know herself, to be honest. "I know you do," she said, pouting a little bit at him. "There's no need to be sarcastic just because you miss me, Nurse Avery. We're still friends!" She liked the nurse a lot, actually, even if it seemed that he didn't trust her to take two steps without falling over herself. She supposed that her medical records at the school would give off that impression, however. "Anyway it doesn't matter. If it makes you feel better I'll probably trip down the stairs or something on Monday. Or maybe I'll fall off my chair in class so I can come see you." It was like a double win -- she could skip a boring class and see her very favourite nurse.
Sandra just pouted at him when he whined back at her, but really she had no answer for him. Eventually she said, "You're being silly." Then she just stood there eyeing him like he was about to do something that was all types of crazy. Nuh uh, Nurse Avery. He did not get to do that kind of stuff with her -- she was just trying to help him out here and convince him that his life really wasn't that bad... even if he was very unlucky sometimes, yes. "Somewhere far away," she said, almost serious for a second before she turned and smiled at him. "The park of course!" It was really just across the street anyway and she needed the benches for him to sit on. That definitely was not far away at all. When he basically shouted the word "lies" she turned and stared at him like he had lost it -- several strangers passing by did the same and she just smiled and waved happily until they left. "Animals do not want you to diiiie," she said, shaking her head at him. "Puppies are adorable! I want a puppy! And and I bet it would love you!" She looked at him stubbornly. Oh yes. She should ask Matthew if they could get a puppy -- she didn't know what he would say, but he probably wasn't also convinced, like Avery, that animals were out to get him.
She just waved him off without a worry in the world when he said that he wouldn't be a good role model. "I think you're a fine role model!" Then again, she really only ever saw the nice, happy nurse side of him, so there were probably many things that she didn't get to see, and would be more concerned about if she did. Fortunately for both of them, Sandra didn't know very much about Nurse Avery's life, truth be told. "You're nice and friendly and awesome at being a nurse." She had always given (and taken) compliments very easily -- they came this time with a bright and chirpy grin. Sandra was just a happy person, really. She jumped, however, when his face suddenly twisted into horror and he called her evil. "I-I'm sorry!" she apologized immediately, stammering a little with her eyes wide. She'd been kidding! Really! She wasn't so cruel as to want to hurt people, even just with antiseptic!
The look of pain on his face while she wiped away the blood didn't make it any better, and she was actually quite concerned by the time she finished, but she kept her tone light. "I promise that if something happens I will pay for your funeral out of my pocket," she told him honestly because she knew that nothing would happen. Dear god, though, if something did happen then she felt bad for Nurse Avery -- his funeral would be horrible and cheap. The girl had only just gotten a job. "Are you okay, though? Really?" she asked, frowning. Actually hurting him would be very bad; she'd thought she was doing such a good job! It was very gingerly that she took the antiseptic wipe and set to taking care of the wound, trying to emulate the motions that he would make when treating her. "I promise not to jam them into your eyes," she said, sighing, deciding that it would be better not to laugh maniacally anymore in case he really did take her seriously and never trust her again. "Doesn't it hurt, though?" she asked after a second of doing this, wrinkling her nose at the thought. She was far too used to that feeling.

Avery stared, deadpanned at her smile, before lifting his eyes at her. Yeesh. No matter what the circumstances were, Sandra just knew how to make his insides all gooey with her cuteness. It was hard not to believe her with those damn innocent eyes. “Oh, so you mean you were just being lazy again?” he asked, avoiding her arms as she flailed them about. It was one thing to be bruised up because an evil dog decided it wanted to trip him, and it was another to be smacked in the face by flailing arms. He’d rather not have any more injuries to his face. “Yeah, yeah,” he chuckled and ruffled her hair. “Fine, I do miss you.” And it was true, considering she was one of his regular patients. Not seeing Sandra on schedule was weird and a change that Avery wasn’t able to adjust to. “That’s no way to get your work done, missy,” he joked, giving her a playful scolding look. He had to admit he felt flattered, though a nagging thought in the back of his head was telling him he corrupted Sandra and that he shouldn’t be proud of himself. But he was. Avery skipped a bunch of classes during his high school days.
“Am not!” he shot back childishly, pouting even more, though he knew fully well he was being silly. He always was. But that’s what made people love him. “It better be the park! Or I’m going to ninja you in half!” he grumbled, slicing his hands in the air to show her his “ninja” moves. In all honesty, it just looked like he was trying swat a fly away. Clearly his mind wasn’t in the right place. “You’re just trying to make me feel better.” Avery jutted his lower lip out, crossing his arms in front of his chest. Yeesh. Why did this situation make him feel like Sandra was his mother? He shuddered. They’d be the most horrible mother-son duo ever—though Avery fit the ‘child’ role perfectly. Well, good luck to his future lover. They would have to deal with a handful.
Avery nearly scoffed when she said he was a good role model. Avery? A good influence? Obviously his bad influence was taking an effect on Sandra, she was just too innocent to notice the change. He placed the back of his hand on her forehead, thoughtfully pausing for a moment before nodding as if he had come to some conclusion. “It has been confirmed,” he sighed, shaking his head. “You have officially lost it.” For an added effect, Avery twirled his finger in circles next to his temple, giving her apprehensive look before breaking out into a grin. He was flattered, really, but he just didn’t agree with him being a good role model. Avery was sure parents would rather stick needles into their gums before letting him set an example for their kids. “Aww shucks, Sandra.” He ruffled her hair again, grinning cheekily. “If I didn’t know any better, it sounds like you have a crush on me~” Even in times of pain, Avery’s shameless flirting prevails again.
How much many could a high school student even have anyways? He chuckled, patting her head as he shook his own. Avery wasn’t as cruel to make a teenage girl who couldn’t even support herself pay for his finances. For candy, though, that was another story. “You will be making the speech at my funeral.” He nodded once, his lips set in a line. “It will be beautiful.” Was it morbid to talk about your own funeral? Avery liked to joke about it, but he couldn’t help but wonder what his funeral would be like. Hopefully light-hearted. He couldn’t stand crying, especially if it was over someone like him. “I’m just absolutely cheeky!” he chirped brightly, grinning at her. He hurt himself so many times that he could barely distinguish what was normal and what was pain. “No,” he said truthfully. “More like a pleasant sting~” Was that weird to say? Avery got up, patting the bandage on his forehead and looked sternly at her. “Stay here.” And he wandered off into the street, returning a few moments later with two ice cream cones in his hand. Avery held one out for her, plopping back down on the bench. “Here’s to not killing me~!”

Though she knew that it was truer than true, Sandra pouted and crossed her arms over her chest and he called her lazy. "I've been doing stuff! Just... not dangerous stuff," she said, sighing. Then again, by Sandra's standards, "dangerous" just meant walking down the street when there happened to be a distraction like a puppy or an ice cream truck going by. "Had people to see and things to do! And then a lot of napping. You know how it is!" She gestured with her hands as if this explained everything. Though it did mess up her hair quite a lot, she smiled when he ruffled her hair anyway and said that he did miss her. "I missed you too, Nurse Avery. I've been trying to book in an appointment but you have so many other students to see!" She was just playing around, of course, because Sandra had never tried to do that, nor did she ever make appointments at the medical wing. It just happened that she was in there often. "But... but work is boring." Actually, she'd never skipped classes specifically -- she'd skipped entire days while pretending to be sick, and she had missed classes for sleeping in or whatever, but refusing to go to class after lunch or something was usually a no-no. She was a good kid! So she would say, anyway, but Sandra was certainly not in the dictionary next to the word "rebel".
She huffed at him when she saw his pout. "Are too! Don't argue with me when you're bleeding, mister," she said, waving a finger at him as if she were his mother scolding him or something. That would be really weird. If anything, it was more like Nurse Avery were her even older brother -- he was even a Water, too! That was it. She was making him the oldest of the Chang sibligs. He probably wouldn't nag her as much as Matthew did. "Good luck with that!" she said, giggling at his supposed ninja moves. "Just a second ago you were on the ground ready to stay there for the rest of your life!" That certainly didn't sound like any ninja she knew of, but of course, Sandra was no expert on ninjas... or anything. The girl knew a couple of random facts but she was pretty fail at everything else. Actually... well, she was probably more book-smart than she let on, but school was silly anyway, and being a general know-it-all would probably be very annoying. "Well..." She didn't know what else to say to him. Of course she was trying to make him feel better! "Well, is it working?"
She wasn't even sure what he meant when he said that she'd lost it, and she just blinked at him a few times, trying to figure it out. "Are you trying to say you're not a good role model?" she asked finally, putting two and two together. Okay, so maybe she wasn't that smart sometimes -- or well, she just wasn't very good at focusing in on a situation or paying attention. "But that's not true at all, you're great!" Sandra smiled brightly at him, all sunshine and rainbows and every happy thing in the world. She'd always liked Nurse Avery -- the other nurses were very nice but there was something about a doctor who called himself a nurse and was so friendly and happy and enthusiastic. She giggled, going a bit pink at the mention of a crush -- not even because it was Nurse Avery, but just because she was silly and conversation topics like that always made her giggly. "Talking like that is dangerous!" she warned him, laughing. "You might have to answer to Matthew! And he's scary. ...And Devin too, actually. But Matt's definitely scarier." The mention of her boyfriend made her grin just a bit wider. In reality, though, Sandra was pretty sure that all of the guys in her life were just big softies. Avery was safe. "But you are very cute! And still my favourite nurse ever!" She nodded in earnest.
The conversation really was a little bit morbid, but she just kept in mind that it wasn't serious at all. The serious look on his face was a little frightening, but it was Nurse Avery, and she didn't think it was so bad a conversation so long as it was all light and joking. "I'll make it the best speech ever," she told him, smiling a little and nodding. "I bet you'd love it! Or your ghost or something. But," she declared suddenly, shaking her head, "no more funeral talk, because you're not dying in my hands, I promise!" She said it with the utmost confidence, which wasn't too terrible considering the fact that this really was the simplest of things and so she doubted there was any kind of big problem with stating it with such confidence. Still, she was probably just being very silly and overly serious, but she really just didn't want to actually poke him in the open scrape with her fingernail or something and actually hurt the poor man. "Well, that's good," she said, sighing her relief that she hadn't actually managed to injure him more. That would distress her more than he probably knew, regardless of how often he did hurt himself. "Okay!" She was a bit confused, but sat obediently, squirming a little in her seat as he wandered off. Was he just going to leave her there? Hopefully that wasn't the case.
It turned out that she had nothing to fear however, because soon enough she saw him approaching again with two ice cream cones in hand. It elicited a loud squeak of excitement from her as she hopped to her feet and scurried over when he was close. "Ice creeeeam!" She loved sweets, and the weather was just about warm enough to enjoy this now. Sandra didn't hesitate in giving Nurse Avery a huge hug -- careful not to crush either of the cones -- before giggling in her excitement as she took the ice cream from him. "I knew you'd make it! Didn't I tell you?" She grinned and licked at the ice cream happily. "Do nurses usually get ice cream from their patients?" she joked. Considering Sandra was one of his regular patients, she was pretty sure the answer was no, but hey -- anything was possible. She did at least bring most of the medical wing staff Christmas gifts and what-not.
(...sorry for length. XD)

Avery rolled his eyes playfully at her. He could sympathize with the whole lazy thing—he never really was able to break free from that habit. “Anything you do is dangerous,” he pointed out, an eyebrow raised. Okay, maybe not technically dangerous, but potentially dangerous. She was clumsy and even the slightest movement could cause an injury. Ah, the lives of uncoordinated people. “Oh, yeah, totally exciting.” Avery never really liked taking naps; he often woke up disorientated and more tired than he originally was. That, or he’d end up sleeping, not napping. There was no such thing as an 8 hour nap, after all. “Pfft, you know how it is. My popularity is amazing~” he said somewhat arrogantly, though he grinned cheekily at her after a moment. Avery wasn’t popular per se, it was just that other doctors/nurses were busy whenever student popped in and they had to be stuck with him. Some liked him, some despised him. It was never an in between with the nurse, and he was somewhat okay with that. Only because those who hated him knew not to visit him again, even if every other medical staff had their hands full with Avery being the only one free and they were on the brink of death. It just. Didn’t. Happen. Oh, well. Saved Avery the intimidation. “Besides,” he added, “You are my favorite patient! I always have time for you~”
When Sandra wagged her finger at him, he was tempted to bite it. He was about to, too, but she dropped her hand before she did. Avery narrowed his eyes teasingly, crossing his arms across his chest. Yeesh, he must’ve been a handful when he was a kid when he this childish now. “That was because an evil dog tried to kill me!” That’s it, every small animal was number one enemy to him. Despite his love and adoration towards them, all they ever did was hurt him. Physically. Which in turn scarred him mentally. And emotionally. Was he that despicable to animals? “… noooooo,” he said, though a small smile curved at his lips. Okay, maybe he was feeling a bit better. It was only because Sandra was so adorable.
“Precisely!” Avery replied casually, as if it didn’t bother him. And it didn’t, not really. He accepted the fact that he a horrible role model long ago, especially when he found that some students were… negatively affected by him. Both in a comical way and a sad kind of way. When he took up the job at the Academy, he thought he was just going to patch up some flesh wounds and that’s it—not really be interacting with the students. Too bad Avery had a big mouth. It was inevitable. He was surprised he was able to keep his job after all these years. “Now you’re just speaking nonsense,” he chuckled, patting her head again. He appreciated the thought, but he knew he was far from a good role model. Avery grinned though, as he caught the small blush on Sandra’s cheeks. It wasn’t like he liked the idea of a student having a crush on him—ugh, he shuddered—he just found it so adorable. “What are you talking about?” he asked, blinking innocently at her. Though, she was right. “Too many obstacles.” Avery shook his head, waving his hand in distaste, but he grinned again when she mentioned Devin. The last time they talked about him was so long ago, and Sandra was vehemently denying her feelings toward him. Now that she and Devin were a couple, Avery felt a big sense of satisfaction. He knew it! “How are you and Devin, anyways?” he asked innocently enough, though he nudged her with his elbow and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. He never knew when to quit.
He chuckled as she talked of her speech for him, suddenly imagining it in his head. He didn’t comment further, though, because he felt like if he did the conversation would become dark and he’d even start seriously contemplating it—he was not that old. And so he returned with the ice creams, rolling his eyes with an amused smile on his face as Sandra voiced out her excitement—physically, too (in which, by the way, Avery hugged back lightly, patting her on the back. Yeesh, she felt like his kid)—and plopped back down on the bench, licking at the side of his cone. “Of course. I got hungry from the blood loss, so I thought I’d get some food in me.” He paused, and grinned mischievously at her. “You’re lucky I even gave you that one, I was about to eat both myself,” he chuckled. Avery was hungry though, as he skipped lunch that day. It was almost time for dinner, which he was thankful for, but there was nothing wrong with spoiling his appetite slightly for ice cream. It was ice cream, after all! Ice cream made everything better. “Only the ones I like,” he replied, grinning at her cheekily. “But then I felt bad so I just got one for you for the hell of it.”

Sanra pouted. "Is not," she countered, her voice quiet but a little whiny in the stubborn, "you-can't-tell-me-what-I-am" kind of way. "Didn't I just tell you I've been all good lately?" She huffed a little, as if taking offense to the fact that everyone thought she was useless. Of course she didn't -- Sandra barely took offense to anything -- but still, she really wasn't that bad. She was just... a little bit all over the place, but truthfully, the fact that she hadn't been to see Nurse Avery in his office in so long was a sign that she had been calming down quite a bit. "You're wayyyy too popular, calm down," she teased, laughing a little. "Try to remember us little people when celebrities start inviting you to their parties, y'know?" Was that apt to happen? She thought not, but there were always these possibilities, and she would have been sad if one of her friends, even when it was a nurse who just happened to patch her up more often than not, ditched her to attend a Paris Hilton party. That would be really unfortunate... though probably really exciting at the same time. "Awww, thanks Nurse Avery! I'll definitely make time to come see you sometime soon," she promised. Was that going to happen? Uh... well, she could always pop by when she wasn't busy, anyway, if she was at the school anyway. She didn't need to hurt herself! No sir.
She just sighed and shook her head at him. "It did not! It was just... confused?" she suggested, sounding rather confused herself. She shrugged after a second. Ah well. It was too bad. She didn't think she'd be able to convince him either way. "Then I'll have to try harder! How can I make you feel better?" she asked, the naturally kind, almost nurturing personality taking over. (Was Sandra a nurturer? No, she was pretty bad at it, but it wasn't for a lack of trying.) Nurse Avery was always pretty adept at making her feel better though, being a medical professional and what-not, but it was also just the sunshiney personality that she liked. With the roles reversed, that was kind of all she had to offer; it was lucky she knew how to apply a band-aid.
"I make lots of sense! You just need to accept that I'm right," she argued, but it was such a lame argument that she was sure it wouldn't make much of a difference to him. They weren't being serious, anyway -- or well, they both seemed to believe what they were each saying, but there was no real "arguing" going on at all. That was lucky too; Sandra was terrible at arguments. "You know what I mean!" She waved her hands around a little bit again to try to make her point. It probably didn't work, but the whole conversation was ridiculous anyway. "Or not, but I think that's just normal. I'd be more worried if you did understand." She giggled. At least her smile was wide when he asked about Devin, though she was actually still blushing from before. Sandra shook her head at his eyebrow wiggles, but it was no longer a huge deal; they'd been together for a very long time now. "Good! Really good, actually. You know it's been like a year?" she asked, the grin on her face huge and happy. Their first anniversary would be in a matter of days. "And he's just so cute and nice and the sweetest and -- sorry," she said a little sheepishly, cutting herself off. She was probably getting carried away. Sandra didn't know when she and Devin had become That Couple, but actually, that had probably always been the case. She was excitable like that.
Ice cream was definitely enough to make Sandra happy, that was one thing she knew for sure. She hadn't been unhappy at all this entire time but the way her mood shifted straight from "really really awesome!" to "HOLY CRAP I LOVE ICE CREAM" levels was ridiculous. "You didn't lose that much blood!" she said, pouting. "Unless you're feeling faint. But if you are then you should eat something that's not ice cream," she pointed out, frowning at him. Really now, Nurse Avery. He was supposed to be a nurse, or a doctor, or whatever! (The lines were still weirdly blurry. Sandra didn't care; Avery was awesome either way.) "And noooo, that'd be mean..." She gave him the best puppy dog eyes she could summon, though she knew that it was silly. If he'd wanted to eat both ice cream cones, there was nothing she could have done about it. It did make her wonder why he would come back in that case, though -- just to rub it in her face, probably. That would be terrible! "Well, thanks! I -- heyyyy," she said, starting to speak before he was done and then stopping to stare at him, appalled, when he did finish. "That's not nice! I thought I was one of your favourites! Nuuuuurse Averyyyyy..." She traced the path of a tear down her cheek, but was too busy enjoying her ice cream to do that any better. After a second, though, she smiled at him, abandoning joking for the time being. "But thanks for the ice cream! You didn't have to do that, you know."

Avery rolled his eyes. He’s heard that tone of voice way too many times before—after all, he had the same voice whenever things didn’t go his way, either. “Yeah, yeah,” he said dismissively, patting her head. “I’m just kidding~” Avery pinched her cheek for good measure to assure her he was just joking. And because he liked pinching cheeks. It kind of reminded him of his aunt who’d always do the same to him—it was both annoying and endearing and of course, it made him somehow dread her presence but it was a sign of affection nonetheless, one that he was deprived of from his mother. “The only reason I’d go to celebrity parties is because of food,” Avery said honestly, his face completely serious. Because food. The only thing that would come out of those kinds of parties, unless he wanted to meet a bunch of shitfaced drunk famous people, who, honestly don’t look or act as they are when they’re on-screen.
“How do you know?” he asked, wide-eyed as if he was traumatized. To be honest he was, just a tiny bit. Mostly because he just loved little animals. Now their image was ruined in his mind! “Are you a dog whisperer? No!” Avery pouted and stuck his nose to the air, the exact depiction of a spoiled, bratty nine year old kid. It was probably way too real of a depiction and he grimaced, falling straight back into his regular demeanor. It was way too tiring to pretend to be someone else. “How to make me feel better?” he repeated, pausing for a short moment, then pointed over his shoulder. “Push me on the swings.” And he wasn’t joking.
Avery scoffed, rolling his eyes. He can play stubborn, too. “No, I’m don’t!” he shot back, sticking a tongue out at her. “I am perfectly capable of distinguishing from right and wrong, and you are far from right!” Okay, this argument was getting more and more childish as time went on. She of course was a child herself (well, in Avery’s eyes) and the nurse had no excuse to keep it going. If anything, he was stuck in the wrong body. A five year old in the body of a 27 year old, for example—or rather, to be accurate. “I don’t know what you mean, actually,” he chuckled, evading her flailing arms once again. Yeesh, they were like weed whackers. “D’awwww~” Avery cooed, poking Sandra’s sides as he hopped around like an excited little girl. Young love. Too cute. Something Avery himself never experienced but always observed. “No, no. Keep going. It’s interesting!” And it was; the blush on her cheeks was adorable. “But remember to be safe. There’s always free condoms in my office~” Okay, he was only joking. Besides, he couldn’t even imagine someone as innocent as her to even do that. Ugh. No. He cringed at the thought of a corrupted Sandra. “Oh, and tell Devin that if he hurts you, he’ll be the first patient to ever be hurt by the nurse himself,” he said cheekily, though his eyes were serious. Don’t get him wrong, he liked Devin, too. As long as he didn’t hurt her, it would stay that way.
He laughed at her reaction, rolling his eyes at her. Sandra was one of his favorite patients; he was just taking a jab at her. “Hey! Be happy that I bought you ice cream in the first place. It wouldn’t be nice if I just bought one and ate it in front of you,” he pointed out, still laughing. Her face was just too priceless. “Of course I did!” he replied back cheekily, ruffling her hair. “Take it as a thanks for taking care of my wounds, Nurse Sandra~”

She wrinkled her nose a little as he patted her head, but she didn't actually mind as much as she would have pretended. "Uh huh," she said as if she didn't believe him, but she was way too smiley to be serious at all. She winced, however, when he pinched her cheek. "That hurts, y'know!" The smile on her face didn't even really indicate any kind of pain, of course. Sandra was all sunshine and rainbows. "Oh my god the food would be amazing," she said, eyes wide. She hadn't even considered this idea, which was kind of ridiculous -- food was almost always the first thing she considered when she considered anything. "All those big name celebrity chefs. And I bet they would totally put a chocolate fountain there." She would probably try to steal the chocolate fountain, so maybe that was why they would never invite her to those celebrity parties.
Sandra glared at him. "Well -- well, how do you know I'm not a dog whisperer?" she asked defensively. Oh, please. Being a dog whisperer would actually be pretty neat, but she unfortunately was not really one at all. It was one of those sad parts of life. Nurse Avery didn't need to know that, of course. Maybe it was better for him if she could convince him that she was a dog whisperper. When he pointed, she turned to look over her shoulder and see the swingset. "You're still bleeding!" she pointed out with a giggle. "I'll push you on the swings later. I promise. They're filled with kids right now anyway," she added after a second, looking back at the little children running all over the playground. Man, Sandra acted like a kid all the time anyway, but she did miss actually being a kid.
She stuck her tongue right back out at him. "I am always right, and you're just jealous," she argued, shaking her head at him. She couldn't actually remember what they were supposed to be right or wrong about, which was a problem, but this happened to Sandra a lot -- well, not this exact situation, but she frequently forgot things like this. There were always way too many thoughts buzzing around in her head at once, random little ideas branching off to other things. It also made conversations with her a little bit random. "I guess it takes a special kind of person to know what I mean most of the time," she admitted, heaving a long and hefty sigh. "And I guess you're just not special enough, Nurse Avery!" She was teasing. He was a very special person to her, actually, more of a friend than she could have ever expected a nurse to be. She was a friendly person, but not everyone was as awesome as Nurse Avery.
Her face was red and she wasn't even sure why; she just giggled as he poked her sides. "Stop iiiit," she whined, pouting at him. She was quickly distracted, however, at his next words. Her mouth fell open. "Nurse Avery!" she squeaked a little, shaking her head fervently at him. Her face was very red at this point. "We're not... I mean... I... We..." She fumbled with her words for a long time, trying to figure out something to say -- eventually she gave up, putting her hands on her cheeks to try to cool them. They were definitely burning up. "You're terrible," she told him squeakily after a moment, reaching out and poking his side in return.
She sighed when she heard his next words, though. "I can't tell him that! And you can't either! Don't scare him, he already had to deal with Matt. And he's a sweetheart, he's harmless!" They were both ridiculously harmless, actually, but she highly doubted Devin could ever hurt her (or anyone, ever). "He's like... like," she started, wanting to say Devin was like a puppy, but maybe that would be inappropriate considering Avery wasn't on the best terms with puppies right now. "I dunno, he's just cute so you shouldn't scare him, okay?" Luckily she didn't think Nurse Avery really would try to do such a thing -- and she really hoped not -- but she was distracted anyway when he arrived with ice cream. Ice cream was always a good way to distract her, actually. It was so easy. "This is true, and you're too nice to do that! Right?" she asked, her tone and smile both very cheeky. "Or maybe not, it's so hard to tell with you. You're a jerk sometimes." She was only kidding -- they made fun of each other a lot, but Nurse Avery was never really a jerk. "No problem, Nurse Avery! Anything for my favourite nurse! And if you want," she added, biting into her cone, "I'll even push you on the swings after."
(LOL mentioning condoms around sandra = so bad. so, so bad.)

“Good!” he laughed, sticking his tongue out childishly. “I’ve had to deal with it my whole life with my auntie, don’t complain!” And he wasn’t kidding. Avery has been seeing her a lot lately; mostly because she’s realized what a deadbeat his mother is and has been trying to make up for it. He just thought of it as her trying to convince Avery to come back home to his mother and take care of her. How was he going to take care of her when she didn’t even want to see him in the first place? “Mmm, imagine how good the sushi would be,” he hummed softly, smacking his lips together. Man. Now he was hungry, and the thought of high class sushi just made his mouth water at the thought. “What, are you going to stick your head into it?” Avery joked chuckling as he imagined it. Sandra would.
Avery shot her a look, an eyebrow raised. “Because I know you,” he replied simply, a small grin tugging at his lips as he stared at her. It’d be pretty spiffy if Sandra was a dog-whisperer, actually. He’d suggest on Sandra being a veterinarian, but then hesitated with the thought of her handling a scalpel. Yup. Nevermind. He barely trusted her with the antiseptic. “So? Is bleeding a crime?!” Avery exclaimed, pouting as he poked at his band-aid. Today just wasn’t his day. First, in the morning, he tripped and scraped his knees. During his shift, Avery somehow managed to step on his coat as he was getting up and fall right onto the bed (this was one of his luckier ones), and just as he was leaving, he ran his injured knee into the corner of his desk. And then the puppy thing happened. Sigh. His life. “Fiiiiine.” Avery pouted. Suddenly it felt as if Sandra was his mother. Well, at least she’d be better than his biological one.
“Prove it!” he shot back childishly. That was obviously hard to prove. But he, being Avery, just loved keeping childish arguments going. His mouth fell open, though, as she proclaimed his un-specialness and he pouted at her again. “That’s not true! I’m plenty special! You’re just jealous!” Okay, this was getting out of hand. Who was older between the two of them again? Oh, right. Avery. The 27 year old who graduated from medical school. Avery.
Avery broke out in laughter, holding his stomach at her reaction. God, he loved making people feel uncomfortable. He knew she and Devin weren’t doing that sort of thing; but it was so funny teasing her about that stuff, considering she was pretty much child at heart and Avery expected her to scream cooties every time she touched the opposite sex. Oh, have times changed. “What?” he asked, blinking innocently at the young Water. “Isn’t having sexual intercourse normal at your age?” he laughed again, poking at her red cheeks. This was way too amusing for the nurse. “No, I’m not~ I’m just promoting safe sex,” he said seriously, looking all innocent as he swung his legs back and forth as he sat on the bench, the cheeky grin on his face. Yup. Best entertainment ever.
“Yeah, yeah,” he said dismissively, waving his hand at her. That was near impossible, but he felt sorry for the dude. Matthew was, after all, a very protective older brother. He understood why, though. Having a little sister go off with a guy, any guy—no matter if he’s the sweetest thing in the world—it was scary, even if Avery couldn’t relate to the whole sibling thing. He’s just met a lot of students that ended up feeling more like a father-son/daughter feeling than a strictly professional relationship. That was too stiff for Avery’s tastes. “You never know~” he said, his tone sing-song. “Boys are horrible creatures!” And it was true. Avery was one of them. “I make no promises,” he replied honestly, licking at his cone innocently. Devin was a nice guy; but nice guys were also a hard thing to read. No one was completely sure that another wouldn’t hurt them. It was impossible to be sure of that thought. “Yeah? And you can be a pest sometimes, too,” he joked, nudging her lightly with his elbow. She was never a pest; more like pleasant company. It was just like having another Avery in the world. Just female version. “YAY~!” he exclaimed, jumping up in excitement as e fist pumped. Obviously that wasn’t a good idea. He watched as his ice cream slowly plummeted to the ground and his lips quivered. “My ice cream…”
Yup, definitely older.

Sandra giggled a little bit. "Even now?" she asked, imagining a woman who looked a lot like Avery but older coming up to him and pinching his cheeks. Twenty-seven or not, she figured that some relatives would just always think of their kids and nieces and nephews and grandkids and so on as babies. "Sushi," she said, eyes going big as she brought to mind an entire buffet or something laden with grade A sushi at some ritzy celebrity party. They did seem to like sushi a lot since that was the big thing now. Then again, the girl visited Japan once a year and spent a lot of that time eating, so her standards could be considered pretty high. "So good. Expensive stuff too, not even just like regular good sushi..." Man, now she really wanted some. "Nurse Aaaavery, I'm hungry," she whined. His question, however, made her just stick out her tongue at him. "Only if it's big enough," she retorted, giggling. Okay, she probably wouldn't stick her head in it -- her hair! -- but she might try to bring a giant travel mug or something to just steal the chocolate and go. Mmm... sushi and chocolate.
She just laughed at his words but raised an eyebrow at him, trying to act sneaky but failing because... well, none of it was in seriousness at all. "Are you sure? You can't even be sure Sandra is my real name!" she declared, hands on her hips in absolute rebellion, but then she deflated after a second to just smile. She was kind of weird sometimes, but it was okay. "Of couse not! I just don't want you to hurt yourself again! Don't make me confine you to bed rest," she said sternly, just teasing. She was sure that, despite the many times he could manage to hurt himself in a day, he was absolutely capable of taking care of himself, so it didn't overly concern her any. She didn't, however, want him to hurt himself. "Good," she said when he relented, reaching over and patting the top of his head (with difficulty, since he was taller) the way he sometimes did to her. Yep, this whole day was all backwards, but she didn't midn it. It was funny. "What would I be jealous of?" she asked stubbornly, crossing her arms over her chest and pointing her chin out at him. Hmph.
Though she very much liked Nurse Avery, she didn't appreciate the laughter at her expense, and she pouted a little, her face still awfully red. She wasn't even usually this bad with these things, but for some reason it was different because lately it came up when her boyfriend was mentioned. It somehow made it a lot more personal and thus a lot more embarrassing for her -- for whatever reason. Whyyyyy... She didn't answer him for a second, her expression on her face shifting as she thought about it, before she said finally, "I don't know. Maybe." It was as honest an answer as she could give, honestly -- Sandra didn't exactly try to delve into her friends' sex lives or anything. "If you say so," she muimbled, glaring at him for a few seconds. She wasn't good at staying mad at people, though, and the look quickly dissipated. "They aren't all horrible! Just..." She knew, because she knew her brother and this seemed to be much the same, that saying "just trust me" was futile. "Just be nice! He hasn't done anything and he won't do anything. So you have no reason not to be nice, right?" She had the utmost trust in Devin, though -- even more than she usually trusted people, which was already a lot.
Though she knew he was kidding, she pouted, much more this time because she was acting more than anything else. "Fine," she said, her voice sounding mockingly hurt and betrayed. "I'll never visit you again. Never ever." That was unlikely, because considering she'd been on a good streak of not getting injured lately she would probably break that soon and wind up having to go to the medical wing... but also because she just liked his company too much to totally boycott his office. His excitement at the mention of the swings was also hilarious and she watchched, giggling. It was actually kind of really adorable in its childish way, and she just couldn't even help but smile... and then it faded as both of them watched the ice cream slipping off of the cone and to fall to the ground. "Oh noooo," she said, dragging out the word and jumping to her feet as well, though she was careful not to allow the same fate to befall her own ice cream. "Oh no, poor baby," she said, her mouth actually falling open a little in shock at what had happened -- this was a true travesty. The "baby" part was serious, too -- he really did look like a disappointed little kid, his lip quivering like that. "Oh no, Nurse Avery, do you want me to buy you another one? We can buy you another one." She felt bad, really. It was just ice cream, but hey. Ice cream was important, and he looked so sad!
