It was an average day for Joshua, if a little cold. It was nothing that a little carefully manipulated heat couldn't solve as he exited the lobby of the apartment, breath misting in front of him as he exhaled. Winter's chill was fought back up a simple calling upon of his powers and the graduate's lips twitched into a soft smirk for a moment. This was why he studied at the Academy, this was the gift that had been passed down to him by his family. Sometimes he loved and was grateful for the connection he had to the fire, other times he let it slip to the back of his mind. He was not quite as passionate about his abilities as some but that did not mean he was not proud. He didn't want to be a volcanologist or work in a treatment centre for burns, sure, but he'd never forget about his power. He knew this was possible from watching his parents play around with their powers, still in their prime despite their bodies ageing.
Still, he knew that elemental education was not his calling. Any time that he picked up a book on illnesses and indulged on the information between the pages, he felt that interest and that longing. There was a difference between enjoying a subject like he enjoyed Math—which was following strict instructions and thus easy for him—and enjoying one like he loved History, reading it even on his own time over holidays and breaks. He couldn't wait for the day when he could go into work every day like his father did and really make his mark in the world. He had rather large ambitions for his life. He wanted to be wealthy, to be well-known, to be happy with his place in society. Sometimes he wondered how other people viewed their future and their goals. Were his realistic? He believed so, but even if they weren't he was happy aiming for them. He had always set his goals high. He wouldn't be where he was if he hadn't, right? Of course, his future was patchy in some places. He hoped it would include Nell but couldn't be sure of that, and he didn't know where his parents or sister would be either. Eh. Some day I'll find out, I guess.
His internal wanderings had carried him quite a ways in the real world as well—he found himself several blocks away from where he had started. He had no real destination in mind, having only wanted to get out and get some fresh air. He did not recognise many of the people he passed in the streets as this was not the upper-class neighbourhood in which he'd grown up but there were a few familiar faces. He was in an amiable enough mood, returning smiles and offering nods. He even returned the polite, "Hello," of a complete stranger who spoke to him when they were waiting for the light to change in order to cross the road. He was not entirely unpleasant a person, after all. He found himself downtown when all was said and done, ducking under an overhanging shop front when it started to snow in order to stop the flakes from settling in his hair. Downtown always made him slightly wary thanks to the gang but they were mostly broken up and in jail now, from what he heard. He hoped that none of them recognised him. That would be trouble he didn't want to deal with. He had his phone in his pocket, at least, if anything did come up. He thought that Nell was home but couldn't be sure. Wouldn't matter, anyway, as long as she's got her phone on her.
