Noly couldn't have asked for a better night. Of course, it was freezing, so she had her coat wrapped tightly around her. For once, she was worried about her hair, which was strange for her. She usually didn't care about what she looked like. But tonight was special. Tonight, she was actually dressing up for someone, not just for class or to go to the club. This person meant the world to her, even if he didn't know. He was her best and closest guy friend, and she owed a lot to him, so she wanted to keep her appearance up. She wanted to make him proud, and maybe, just maybe, he'd actually see her as a girl for once, and not just his best friend. That was only a hope, though. She wasn't getting her hopes up, only secretly wishing.
The winter breeze brushed over her, causing her to shiver a little bit. She was glad that her coat went far below her knees, there was no saving her toes, though. They poked out of the glittering heels she wore, and were starting to turn blue. She had to laugh at that. She remembered the day Ashton had suggested they come to the dance together 'as friends'. He'd been so worried about her toes, it was actually cute. She shook her head, trying to erase the smile from her face. She shouldn't have been smiling. She'd been waiting in the cold for almost twenty minutes,so she should be mad. it was just impossible. Of course, her face fell a bit at all of the couples walking in, holding hands and making goo-goo eyes at each other. She gave a gentle sigh before she had to shake herself out of it again. No. She wasn't getting her hopes up. There was no way Ashton was going to look at her like that, ever. They were friends...And that was all they were ever going to be.
Once more a breeze picked up, and Noly wrapped the coat even tighter around her. One girl she recognized from her element came up to stand with her. "Waiting for your date?" Noly smiled and shrugged. "Yeah, if you can call him that."
She looked the girl over. She looked better than she usually did. She'd ditched the glasses and was wearing a bright pink dress, which brought out the pink in her cheeks. Of course, no one could see Noly's dress, but that was fine with her. "Well now you have some company." The other girl gave Noly a bright smile, which she promptly returned as she simply stood there, waiting. Tags: Ashton Words: 448 Outfit: Here Hairstyle: Here Notes: Yaaaay! Ashton had never really been to any formal events before. Growing up in lower middle class, he hadn't even worn a suit before his grade eight graduation, and even that had been borrowed off a cousin. He was so nervous about bringing it up to his parents in order to ask for money that he just didn't. Instead, he took the money that he had earned thus far and wished himself luck before heading to a place that sold formal wear in a part of the Hollow he'd never been to before. The clerk had obviously been able to sense his awkwardness but she'd been very helpful in assisting him. He'd forgotten what he looked like in a suit and he frowned thoughtfully at his expression. Do I look good, or? He couldn't make any sort of judgement for himself, to be honest. He wasn't too confident but he didn't have really low self-worth, either. He shrugged internally and just hoped that Noly wasn't too disappointed.
Noly. Wow. Did it ever feel strange to be coming to the prom with her! His friend had mentioned that she didn't have a date and he'd asked her before he'd even really thought out what he was saying. Ashton hadn't really looked at other girls since Asha had broken his heart. It had been one failed romance too many and he was just about ready to take a break for a while. He was not being dramatic and giving up on love or anything like that but a sensible part of him suggested that he might need to smarten up and mature a little if he wanted to find a girl that wasn't going to take advantage of him. He'd even slept with her, too, not that it was too earth-shattering. He'd lost his virginity a couple of relationships before that. I really am an idiot, he thought to himself, shaking his head and beginning to get anxious with all the traffic. He'd heard the Hollow was small and had assumed 'small town' not 'small city with work-hour traffic'. "Come on, come on!" he urged, actually slamming the horn impatiently. He didn't have road rage but he was already running behind.
In the end he showed up about half an hour late, cursing his terrible luck and feeling uncharacteristic resentment toward the drivers for his friend's sakes. She'd probably thought he was ditching and went off with some other guy that didn't have a date. Of course, Ash could never stay angry for long. The upset had dissipated shortly after he got out of his slightly weathered car and started toward the Academy itself. He had not expected Hannoly to be waiting outside and friendly concern kicked in immediately. "Noly, you must be freezing!" he said with wide eyes. "Come on, let's go inside." He hesitated and then shyly took her arm. This was a friend date but they could at least act the part, right? That was the whole point of this dance, a date for them both so they didn't have to go alone. He could not yet see what she was wearing but he couldn't deny that he was curious. "I'm so sorry for making you wait," he insisted once they were inside the building but not yet inside the mess hall. The school was pitch dark save for the torches along the walls to the mess hall, lighting the way. "Stupid traffic--I don't live here and I only got this-" he plucked at the sleeve of the suit, "-last minute and--" Ashton broke off with a sheepish smile. "Sorry. Again."
NOTES Oh look, I found a use for that money

The other Water girl had left after ten minutes of waiting, her date finally showing up. It left Noly feeling a bit alone, but the feeling last long. She saw him before he even reached her, and, she was startled to find, her heart skipped a beat. He looked amazing. The boy really cleaned up well, and she couldn't help but blush. When he reached her, she had to remember how to speak, of course, it was easy, because the first thing he worried about was her. "Ash! Calm down, I'm fine." She gave him a bright laugh. "I haven't been waiting that long anyways." She felt bad for the lie, but she couldn't stand to see her best friend upset. Shit...That's what she had to remember. This boy was her best friend. Not her boyfriend. Not a friend with benefits. This was her best friend. She couldn't do anything to jeopardize that.
When he took her arm, her blush grew deeper, but she followed him anyways, hiding the fact that she was nervous. Of course, he was rambling a bit, so she hoped that she wasn't the only one. When they got inside, she had to laugh a little bit at his ramblings. "Ash. Stop. Everything is fine." She gave a nervous laugh and gave him a gentle hug. "You look amazing. And I really didn't wait that long." She tilted her head reassuringly with a smile before she let go of Ashton's arm, almost regretfully. She was nervous, but she unbuttoned her coat, turning her back to him, and walked over to the nearby coat rack. With a sigh to calm her nerves, she pulled the coat from her shoulders, hanging it up. She had no idea how Ashton would react as she turned back around and walked back to him. She could only smile a bit and glance at the doors. "Well...Are you ready for this?" She didn't even know if she was ready for it.
People were already walking by and staring at her. She never dressed up, and most of the people here knew that. They glances and strange looks were starting to get to her, and she was trying her best to pull into herself. She looked down at her shoes, crossing her arms tight across her chest and began to bite at her lip. She didn't like all of the attention on her. She could even hear people asking if it was Tase, and not her, since Noly didn't dress up...at all.

At least Hannoly didn't seem angry with him, which to Ashton was honestly a pretty big relief. He'd never went to a dance with a girl before or stood them up or made them wait, this was a first for him. Then again, he'd also never been stuck in traffic when going to meet a girl before. I've also never dated a friend, he thought to himself, adding to the list. This wasn't a date so did it still count or was it a moot point? He wasn't really sure and so he allowed that train of thought to wither and die. "Oh, okay," he said in quiet relief, believing the lie immediately. He tended to take the word of his friends pretty easily because he hated to doubt them. Lying to Ashton always hurt the poor boy if he found out but most of the time he remained ignorant. He wasn't looking for lies to pick them out and he also wasn't staring at her feet so he didn't see that her toes had started to go blue with the wintery chill. There was snow on the ground of course but at least the Fires had carved a path of pure and dry grass through the snow and up to the school. They could be mean sometimes but they were good for some things.
He smiled as she hugged him and returned it quickly, not realising that this should make him embarrassed in any way. He was fine with physical affection toward his friends and had no idea how Hannoly felt about him so it didn't made him feel uncomfortable. "Thanks," he said, and the compliment did make him flush a little in spite of himself. He was not used to getting compliments, not even from friends, so the unexpected words caught him off guard. He would have commented on her outfit but as he couldn't see it that was kind of hard. Instead, he said, "Maybe you should take your jacket off and let me see what you look like so I can return the compliment." His tone was light and amused, relaxing a little now that they'd gotten the awkward bit out of the way. He was surprised by how nice she looked in a dress, having never really seen his best friend dressed up before. "You look better than I do, I'm jealous!" he joked, but the compliment was at least sincere. He just said everything lightly to keep the mood relaxed and friendly.
He chuckled and shook his head when she asked if he was ready. "Not really, but I'm no chicken. Let's go!" He took her arm again, this time aware of how she looked but still pointedly viewing her as his best friend in a pretty dress, and made his way into the dance hall. Well, mess hall converted. It was dimly lit and there was music playing, couples mingled and danced as singles chatted by the refreshment tables. No fights appeared to have broken out. "Speaking of your sister," he said, frowning in disapproval at someone that suggested Noly would never show up at a dance, "is she even here?" He was a bit miffed that people would talk about his friend the way they were. She was still a girl, just because she didn't usually wear dresses didn't mean it was disallowed. "I think you look great," insisted Ashton indignantly.

She still felt bad for lying to Ashton about waiting, but it was for his own good. She wouldn't be able to stand the sad face he gave if he found out she'd been waiting for almost fourty minutes. It was her own fault, really. She should have at least texted him to find out where he was, or not gotten there ten minutes early like a love-sick school girl. They were just friends. That had become her mantra while waiting for the boy. "Just friends, just friends, just friends." It was getting harder and harder to remember that mantra, though, with the boy being a perfect gentleman and sticking up for her like he was.
She was honestly shocked at his reaction and shook her head a little bit. "No. You've got that all wrong. You can pull off the suit. Dresses just aren't my thing." She gave a shrug, dusting it off as a joke, but she actually felt that way. She felt fake, felt like a little girl playing dress-up in her mother's clothes. This wasn't her at all. She would rather be in a t-shirt and a pair of skinny jeans rather than a fancy dress. Sure, she would keep the heels, but heels really went with everything in her opinion. She had to sigh, though. Ashton had heard the whispers, and asked one of the dreadful questions of doom. "I..I really don't know. Um..When you see someone who looks just like me, but probably better...Let me know." She bit her bottom lip slightly as Ash led her into the mess hall. She was actually stunned.
The room looked amazing. The main lights were dimmed and string lights were hung everywhere so that people were able to see. People were scattered everywhere, sitting, standing, laughing dancing. She couldn't help but smile at the sight. Then he spoke again, and she was grateful for the dim lighting, because she blushed again. "Well thank you, Ash. But you look far better than I do." She nudged him with her hip slightly, giving him a giggle, trying to play it off as a joke so he didn't yell at her or scold her for putting herself down.
She looked about for only a moment, before she saw an empty table right near the dance floor. It was the only one left. "Look!" She pointed it out to Ashton before she tightened her grip on him and pulled him to the table, instantly sitting at one of the chairs to claim in. She knew she would never last dancing in her shoes, so she reached down and unhooked them, pulling them from her feet. She set them on the table, legally(in the world of school dances) claiming the table. She gave him a grin before she simply looked at her shoes, at a loss for what to say next. She'd never actually had a date to a dance before, so she didn't exactly know what to say now.

Unlike Hannoly, Ashton himself was a terrible liar. He was such a genuine and sweet person that lying to other people got him awfully flustered and confused and it was practically like going around with the word stamped on his forehead for how obvious even the littlest and whitest of lies tended to be. So when Noly insisted that she could not pull off a dress he gave her a long look. It was not necessarily harsh (Ash could not do harsh, thank you) but it was disapproving. He didn't like it when his friends were unhappy with themselves or the way they looked, it honestly upset the Earth elemental. "Don't say that," he insisted. "If it counts for anything I've never worn a suit save for once in my life so we'll be awkward and inexperienced together but you do not look bad." His tone was stubborn and adamant but as this was Ashton it still managed to sound soft and gentle at the same time. It was almost comical when he tried to be stern with people because no matter how assertive he was trying to be, coming across as such usually failed.
Again he didn't like the way Hannoly suggested that her sister would look better than her. He'd have felt the same way for Tayslynn had the roles been reversed, of course, but that was not the point. He hated when anyone put themselves down when they didn't deserve it. Thinking about that for a moment, he got a clever idea and had to smile a little bit at the thought. "Think of it as a compliment," suggested Ashton. "If they think your sister looks good in a dress and they mistake you for her, that's a good thing, right?" He wasn't saying that it was good she had to live up to the standard of someone else, no. Perhaps it could have been taken that way but anyone who knew Ashton, especially his best friend, would probably be able to guess what he was actually intending to say. They though Tase was pretty, they thought Hannoly was Tase, thus they must have thought that Noly was pretty. Right? Ashton thought so, at least.
He was about to start on another insistence that she looked fine when Noly nudged him with her hip, making him let out a small exclamation of surprise before he grinned. Again he accepted this as a joke rather than the truth, far too trusting in his friendships for his own good. "Oh, stop that," he said, but now his tone was as light and joking as hers had been as he swatted her arm gently. Unlike some guys who underestimated their own strength and caused bruising when they only meant to joke around, Ash really was an expert at not hurting people, sometimes even if he was trying to cause pain. He was a pacifist, not fighter by nature. He'd try to stand up for himself if he had to (usually with his powers, which fared better than fists) but by default he didn't like to cause pain in others.
He was a little surprised as she immediately made a beeline for one of the tables and pulled off her shoes, sitting down, but he did not protest. "Done already?" he asked, a mixture of surprise and amusement in his tone. This was a dance and to his knowledge, people were supposed to... well, dance. Still, if Noly would rather sit down or if the shoes were making her feet hurt (he would never understand how they wore heels, these girls) then he wasn't going to put up an argument. "You really do look nice you know." he said off-handedly. "So if it's stage fright you don't have to worry." Then he thought of something. "Have you ever danced before?" Maybe she didn't know how? It was often an anxiety of girls and guys alike when coming to a place like this.

Noly couldn't help but crack a smile at Ashton's attempted 'serious face'. He couldn't be harsh or mean even if he really wanted to, but that was what made Ashton...well...Ashton. She bit her lip slightly and just gave a shrug when he said she didn't look back. "Whatever you say." She gave him another shrug as she looked to her feet, not really saying anything else until he brought up her sister again. She guessed he was right. If they thought she was Tase, and said she looked good...Then she must actually look good, right? Because really...They looked exactly the same...She shook the thoughts of her sister from her head, though, she didn't want to be sad tonight. This was not a night for sadness.
Of course, she couldn't help but laugh again when he slapped her. She stuck her tongue out at him before she had dashed to the table. She glanced up at his confused gaze for a moment before she laughed. "I had to get a table. What happens when we get tired and there are no tables left? See? Shoes here, means I've claimed it as my own." She gave a bright grin, hoping he'd get her explanation before he spoke again. The words caused her to blush, but she hoped the dim lighting covered it up. "Thank you.." She finally said, without turning around and disagreeing with him.
When he asked if she knew how to dance she laughed a little bit. "Have you ever seen me at the club? I dance all the time." She then lifted her eyebrow before she stuck out her tongue a bit. "Are you asking me to dance?" She was trying her best not to giggle. Sure, she wanted to dance, but her stomach was growling rather unattractively. So she figured she needed some sort of snack before she died of hunger. As if on cue, a loud growl came from her stomach and she blushed, placing a hand over it. "Um...Maybe...Snacks first?" She gave a nervous laugh before glancing over at the table. She'd been so excited for the dance, she hadn't even thought of eating at all...all day. She wouldn't tell Ashton that, though. She knew he would yell if she did.

Ashton laughed lightly as she explained the reason she'd set her shoes down on the table. He didn't understand all the little traditions or habits that went on at dances so having things like that explained to him was amusing. "What happens if you want to wear your shoes, though?" Ashton figured that it was a perfectly normal question to ask. He knew that girls often complained about how painful heels were but as he didn't have the experience himself he couldn't really connect it. He'd certainly never been possessed with a desire to slip on a pair of heels. Besides, they looked like they were hard to walk in. He didn't mind if Hannoly wanted to walk around the mess hall in bare feet, though. He was sure that as long as she made sure she didn't step in anything that she'd be alright and he wouldn't care. She was his friend, after all, he didn't want her to slip in a spilled drink and end up on her ass or anything. That would suck for the both of them.
He shook his head with a smile. "I don't go to clubs, NoNo, I'm underage." Huh. So was she. He passed it off to the fact that she probably either used a fake ID or just didn't drink but as her best friend Ashton knew that she was prone to drinking at times. He wasn't stupid and he knew what alcohol smelled like. He'd never really questioned it before. He accepted his friends for who they were and just tried to make sure they didn't do anything stupid like jump off a bridge because it sounded like a good idea. "I haven't," he said with a bit of a laugh. He wasn't ashamed to admit his inexperience in things like that. He didn't go to clubs and he'd never been to a formal dance before so he had absolutely no experience. He hoped that Noly didn't mind too much. Even though they were just friends he was still her sort-of "date" and if she was expecting certain things out of this he didn't want to let her down.
Was he asking? Ashton wasn't even sure himself. Did he want to dance with Noly or did he want to keep this strictly in the friend zone? People danced with their friends all the time but it felt strange to go on a "date" to prom and dance with the "friend" that was also said "date". "Maybe?" he said with a bit of a smile. "If you want?" If she wanted to dance then he'd play along with it, inexperienced and left-footed as he was. They were here to have fun, both of them, so he was determined to do so. Snacks first sounded like a good idea to him, too, so he nodded and led the way to the tables. "Hopefully your lot haven't gotten into them," he laughed, knowing the Water elementals to be pranksters. Sometimes they just replaced the icings with toothpaste or sugar with salt, innocent things, but he'd known them to lace it with less friendly substances as well. He picked up a plain looking brownie and gave it an experimental sniff before nibbling off the end and shrugging. "Tastes alright," he announced.

Hannoly couldn't help but laugh at his question, and the look on his face at her explanation. ”Oh come on. It hurt enough just walking from the dorms over here in those things. I don't think I could ever dance in them.” Sure, she'd danced in heels before, but nothing like the stiletto’s she had picked for this evening. Plus, she usually took her shoes off in the club, anyways. That never ended well, but she didn't care, that's why showers were invented, right? She usually walked around barefoot, and as soon as she got home, she soaked her feet in the tub. It worked out nicely. When she was having fun, she didn't really care about the bottom of her feet. Of course, one never knew what would go on in this mess hall. The last dance they had, the punch got spiked and there was nastiness all over the floor. She actually sort of wished that she had worn her converse, but she'd wanted to look her very best for Ashton on their “date”.
Noly pursed her lips a bit at Ashton's comment. ”Well...I'm underage too...But I only drink when Nell buys them for me. I usually just go in to have some fun and dance, mostly I claim to be someone's DD, usually works like a charm.”
She gave him a bright grin, though she felt a little horrible about the whole thing. She wished she was twenty-one already. That would make her life so much easier. She would almost be out of this school, hopefully be filthy rich from her paintings, and she would be able to get into the club without any hassle. She didn't know what the big deal was, anyways. She just wanted to dance. She hardly ever went to drink. It was all quite ridiculous in her mind. Of course, she could tell something was on Ashton's mind, he really could never hide anything from her. She read him like a book nine out of ten times. And of course, she noticed he was nervous when he said the dancing was up to her. She shrugged and shook her head a little bit. ”Not really. I know you and your left feet, Ash. Plus, it's too crowded up there, and I'm a bit claustrophobic.” She shrugged it off like it was nothing so he couldn't see that she was a little disappointed. To be honest, she kind of wanted to dance with him, just to get the chance to snuggle up to him and get a little close. She mentally kicked herself at the notion, though. She kept re-thinking her mantra, trying to make it true. He was only her friend. End of story. She followed him closely to the snack table, watching intently as he took a bite of the brownie. When he said it was fine, she gave a gentle smile and nod, grabbing one of the small plates from the end. She set a couple cookies on her plate, followed by a few strawberries, along with some pretzels. She honestly didn't care what Ashton thought of her eating habits right then. She hadn't eaten all day because she was so nervous, so now was her time to pig out. Plus, the bar had her savior. She reached under the table, grabbing a can of soda from the cooler there. She knew that her lot couldn't mess with them. They were closed. She gave Ashton a grin before she held out her half empty plate. ”Is there anything else you wanna squeeze onto here?” She tilted her head with a grin, anxious to get those cookies into her tummy.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

It didn't bother him that she drank, even if it did surprise him to hear that Nell was the supplier of her drink. That's right, Nell's a bartender, isn't she? He hadn't kept in touch with the Earth elemental over the holidays because he'd been too busy with his family and he wondered how she was doing. He could have asked Hannoly if she'd spoken with her lately but decided to keep the subject focused on the two of them for the night. Even though they were just friends it probably wasn't the nicest thing to talk about other girls when you were on a 'date'. Still, I wonder if she's here? He'd seen a lot of his friends but hadn't bumped into Nell yet, or even caught a glimpse of her. She'd probably be with her boyfriend, anyway, and he wouldn't interrupt them by stopping to chat. "Aren't there laws about teen drivers, too, though?" He was more amused than concerned and this showed in his expression as he chuckled. He didn't really mind what Noly got up to as long as she kept herself safe while she was doing it. He never liked the idea of his friends getting themselves into trouble.
He hadn't actually been nervous about the dancing—instead, Ashton had just been unsure of whether it was something that his friend wanted to do. He nodded when she turned it down, totally alright with that considering he didn't realise she was actually disappointed. "Hey!" he protested, chuckling. "I'm sure I'm not that bad." He wouldn't actually know if he were terrible at dancing because he'd never really had the chance before. Maybe it was for the best that they skipped out on that part of prom? Then again, what's the point of coming here, then? "What are we going to do for the rest of the night if you don't plan on dancing?" It was an innocent enough question and not meant to apply pressure to their conversation. He'd meant it when he'd said that it was up to Noly, he was just curious about any plans she had, if at all. "Did you have a plan to meet up with friends?" It wouldn't have hurt him if she had. After all, they hadn't came here as real dates.
"If I put anything more on that it'll overflow!" He was only kidding, of course. He didn't actually think that Noly had bad eating habits and scarcely noticed the amount of things that she'd piled onto her plate. She was pretty and so he had no reason to criticize her weight or eating habits. Besides, they weren't dates. He grabbed some cookies for himself on a separate plate and popped a couple strawberries into his mouth while he was at it, though he did leave the pretzels alone. They were salty and he didn't want to be making frequent trips back to the table in order to quench any sort of thirst that they would bring on. He sat down at the table that Noly had so graciously claimed for the two of them and started in on one of the cookies. "Did you go to prom last year?" he wondered, knowing that he had been too young at the time but she'd been his age. Their age difference was another thing that didn't concern him. He was okay with a whole lot of things, really.

When Ashton made the comment about driving, she gave a shrug. "I do have a license, you know." She gave him another shrug. She'd been driving since she was thirteen and she'd never gotten pulled over or caught, so she really didn't care. When he finally caught on to her dancing joke, she couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Well I wouldn't know. I've only seen you try to dance a couple times, and that was in my apartment, last month, when you didn't think I was looking." She stuck out her tongue at him playfully before she gave another giggle. "And trust me, it was pretty bad." Yes, she meant that. The boy had two left feet. She didn't want to make him mad or upset, though. She was only kidding around. She gave him a nudge with a smile, just to make sure he knew she was kidding.
He asked about what they would be doing then, and she had to shrug. "Well...I don't know. Usually when I come to dances, I'm with a group of people, so I'm forced to dance. But I'm not really sure. I sometimes sit at a table and just watch everyone else try to dance." She gave a little shrug at the thought. His next comment shocked her and she shook her head. "No. Of course not. Why would I make any other plans? The only friend I planned to hang out with is you. Nell's with Josh anyways...And I really don't have any other friends besides you guys..." She brushed it off like she didn't care, but the fact that she had so few friends bothered her like crazy.
With his comment to the plate she had to gasp, bumping him with her hip since her hands were full. "Hey! Are you calling me fat?!" She was just playing around, and feigned a gasp to let him know that she was joking. She stuck her tongue out at him as she began to move back to the table, hoping that he was following her. At his next question, she gave a nod. "Yeah. By myself. I pretty much sat at my table and watched everyone else have fun." She gave a shrug, making it look like she didn't care. Though she did. She hated going to these things alone. She always liked having people to share these moments with, and be able to laugh about them with friends.

Ashton had not been suggesting that it was illegal for Noly to drive, only that there were laws applied to teen drivers that he wasn't sure she had been upholding by being the designated. At any rate, he didn't want to get into some sort of debate about it and so let her believe what she liked about his statement. The boy could often be agreeable and quiet just to avoid arguments and disagreements with his friends. Hannoly was more than just a casual friendship for him—she was his best friend, one of the few at least, and so he cared about maintaining a position relationship with her. Another thing he never had much to complain about was when his friends poked fun at him for a laugh. Call it pathetic but if they were happy then he'd take the hit to his pride or whatever just to see them smiling and cheerful. He really enjoyed having a laugh with his friends. "You're doubting my insane skills, I'm offended!" He placed a hand over his heart and gasped dramatically as if it had been the biggest hurt in the world that she had 'doubted' him. Honestly he didn't mind. He didn't think he was absolutely horrible—again, he'd never tried it—but he couldn't say for sure.
He turned his attention to the overall crowd when she mentioned watching people, a thoughtful expression on his face as he observed all the prom-goers. Some of them looked a little tipsy judging by the way they were stumbling rather than dancing, some nervous, others relaxed. There was a girl nearby who kept wincing as her date stepped on her toes but she was clearly smitten enough with him that she didn't complain. "Well, not everyone is trying, some of them are alright," he offered fairly. He could spot a few of his friends in the crowd but remained where he was, nibbling a cookie to take advantage of the silence. "I'm sure Nelly and I aren't the only ones who'd like you," he said a tad unhappily, disliking the idea that people would not give his friend a chance. She was a really nice girl and he found it unfair that some people judged her against her sister. Siblings should never be compared, especially not twins. It's not fair. Sometimes when his mother was mad she'd compare his attitude to his little brother and that never worked out. It made him bitter toward her and resentful toward Cameron. Is that how Noly feels sometimes? "Anyway, we can keep each other company," he decided.
It was saddening to know that Noly hadn't experienced a good prom in her junior year. He was having fun so far because he had his best friend for company but he could only imagine what it would be like if he were alone. Ashton was not shy but he got a little flustered when it came to talking to girls, asking them to dance. He wasn't hopeless, just a little hesitant. And he couldn't keep thoughts of Asha from his mind—she kept slipping in through the cracks in small quantities, infecting his thoughts with their memories. He wondered if he'd have been leaving Noly to another lonely prom if Asha had been here, dancing with the Fire elemental or at least helping her to prank some of the innocent prom-goers. These were bad thoughts to be having and so he once again pushed them from his mind. "Why'd you show up, then?" he asked her curiously. "It seems a bit depressing to go by yourself." He wasn't calling her pathetic, he just felt bad for her. His lips twitched into a smile. "Well, at least this time is better, right?"

She really hoped she wasn't hurting his feelings by making her jokes. She knew that sometimes Ash didn't know how to take her humor, and it made her feel bad more than often. The smile on his face and words, though, proved her wrong, he did not mind, so it lifted her spirits a little bit more. She could tell, though, that something was bothering him. He got quiet for a minute and it seemed that he was probably battling with himself in his mind. She gave a mental shrug at the thought. Noly took a quick bite of one of her cookies, not caring about the disgusted glares of people walking by and staring at her as she tried and failed to stuff her face non-chalantly. She just shrugged her shoulders at them and silently hoped that Ashton did not see. She did not need him worry about her, even though it made her toes tingle and her heart start to race just a little bit. Oh no, there she went again. She repeated her mantra in her head once again before turning to Ash, hearing him speak about the other dancers.
”Yeah, I guess they're not all that bad, but still. I have a feeling a lot of boys are going home with holes in their feet.” She gave a laugh at her own joke, picking the opportune moment, for a couple she was staring at did just that. The girl stepped on the boys foot with her, most likely, six in stiletto heels, and the boy tried to hide the wince of pain. During the strange silence that passed between then, Noly devoured yet another cookie, and had to force herself to swallow all of it when Ash spoke again. ”Oh you are. Not many people want to deal with a bi-polar freak.” She gave a simple shrug at the thought, not wanting Ash to think on it. She should not have even brought it up. It could be something that turned him away from her, and that was something she did not want to happen. She cared about him far too much to lose him.
As they stood there, Noly noticed that Ash was sort of staring into nowhere inparticular. She had never seen that look before. ”Ash...Are you alright?” She poked him on the arm to make sure she was all still there before she gave a gentle sigh and lifted her free hand to place it on his forearm. She could usually read him like a book, but she had never seen that look before, and it worried her a bit. His question countered her thoughts, though, and she gave a shrug. ”I don't know. Someone would ask me to show up, so I would. I usually always end up leaving early, though. It all just gets too sad for me.” She gave a shrug, trying to show that she wasn't really affected by it. She didn't mind being alone, she was used to it, really. When he asked her that question, though, she couldn't help but smile brightly at him. ”Of course. Everything's always better when you're around.” She couldn't stop the words, and she gave a deep blush immediately after. ”I mean...Um..you're my best friend so...Um...Of course it's going to be better.” She stuttered her way through an explination, trying to cover up her words that could possibly give away her feelings about him. She stuffed a cookie into her mouth in the end, to stop herself from talking all together.

Emerald eyes narrowed a little in distaste when Hannoly called herself a freak, the Earth elemental not liking the sound of this at all. He hated it when his friends were hard on themselves for any reason and this was his best friend, so the feelings were amplified further. "Bull," he said. "You're not a freak." Her moods did not bother him all that much—not unless she was being depressing like she was now. She seemed to just shrug it off but he was not convinced. He wouldn't give up until she said something positive about herself, thought it, anything. He wanted his best friend to be happy and it distressed him to think that he might not be able to do that for her. He had no idea that she liked him and he probably would have locked up a little in uncertainty if he did. His last relationship had been a flop and he'd really not tried his hand at dating after Asha. He wouldn't know what to do. "If you go about acting like no one will want to talk to you then they won't. You'll look unapproachable. But I like you so if you can at least make other people give you a chance, well, who knows, right?" Ash had always been an optimist. It was pretty hard to beat it out of him, even with the things he'd messed up in his life.
To be fair, he had a much kinder life story than most. His parents were together, he'd never really been abused, he still had his family intact, and they were not struggling. They might not live in a mansion with fancy cars or even a roomy middle-class home but they made enough to pay the bills. Ana was even working on her newest novel and from what she was saying, it was doing well. He'd never gotten involved with a bad crowd, never broken any serious laws, wasn't a high school drop out. He'd done okay for himself. His only problem was relationships. He supposed that he and Noly were alike in that aspect. Neither of them seemed to be able to make anything work. Oh well. I guess we've both got plenty of time for that, right?
He blinked at her in surprise, unaware that his contemplative expression had been visible. He really had to work on hiding his emotions. He'd always been bad at it. Smiles were never forced with Ashton, however, and so the one he fixed on his features was sincere. "Sorry, I was just thinking. Guess I got a little distracted." The apology was genuine as well—he always felt bad when he spaced out around his friends and thus didn't give them the full attention that they deserved. He tried to be a good guy for the sake of others but even he could get too absorbed in his own problems at times. It was rare but it still happened. He was also a tad oblivious and so thought nothing of the blush nor the rather odd statement coming from Noly. He took it for face value and grinned at her. "I make you happier, huh? I take full credit for that!" His green gaze was cheerful. He didn't realise that she was nursing a crush, not even as they strayed further and further from 'friend' territory with each step they took into this prom business.
[We should probably close this one up soon—are we still up for doing the one plot? We could maybe make it happen in the present rather than the past to prevent inaccuracies?]
