The winter was dreaded by most Earth elementals. Not only was it the beginning of a new year and thus a new load of work that they needed to become accustomed to, but it also meant that the snow and cold hampered your abilities quite a lot. He knew that the Fires shared their plight but it could often be hard for even Ashton to sympathise with them when they spent half their time terrorizing his element and alliance. Surely enough, the boy had been re-elected for the position of Earth leader this year. It cheered him to know that his element had faith in him, after all. He had some stuff to be dealing with after his classes and so he parted ways with his friends and headed toward the office of administration instead. The secretary was filing papers behind her desk and so did not immediately realise he was there. Though slightly shy, being a leader had helped him build confidence and he cleared his throat to get her attention. "Excuse me?" She glanced up impatiently. "Yes?"
Ashton got a sense that she did not want to be bothered and winced almost guiltily. "Er, I was asked to come up here..." She asked for his name and he gave it, glad to avoid conversation as she typed it into the computer and then nodded to herself. "You've got a meeting with your Math professor to discuss your grades at the end of the month," she said. "Said they had a bit of a problem with it last year." He ducked his head slightly. Indeed, in terms of academics Maths had always been his weakest point. He was a dedicated student—or rather, tried to be—but he had no natural gift of smarts or intelligence. It was a lot of hard work to maintain a constant A-B average when there was a roadblock as deadly as Math in the way. He didn't want to be an accountant or a mathematical when he was older—why did he have to suffer through another year of this? Still, rules were rules. "I'll be there," he assured her. "Thank you." Her demeanour had not lightened the entire time but that did not mean that Ashton was going to be unpleasant. He was a nice guy, arrogance didn't work out with him. Not even when his ex-girlfriend had left him not once but twice—Don't think about Asha.
It was hard sometimes to put the fiesty Fire elemental out of his mind. He'd think he was completely over it and then something would come up to remind him. It was like that with most of his failed relationships. He really poured his heart into something like that and rejection didn't usually sit well with him. True, he'd broken off a few things himself but that didn't make it any easier to forget the good times. Sighing, he accepted the little pink slip that notified him of the date and tucked it into his binder, heading back toward the Earth dormitories. He liked to spend as much time in the dorms as he possibly could during his free hours so that he could be of assistance to any Earths that might need it. Especially this close to the beginning of the year with all the freshmen about. They were still very green—no Earth-related pun intended—about the goings-on and locations in the Academy so as a leader it was his job to help them through that. His own leaders during his freshman year had been great. I wonder where they are now? He entertained this thought as he flopped down on the couch, staring up at an elegant blue flower hanging like a lamp from the ceiling. It started to expand and contract under his influence, almost like it was breathing. I wonder what species it is? I don't recognise it.
