Jolene stared out the window of the moving car; she and her father were going to visit Dolly, her mother. The blonde was excited to see her mother, but Jolene was worried that her father would over hear parts of a conversation that he shouldn’t be hearing. Her father had a way of doing that, over hearing conversations that had nothing to do with him. It was quite annoying in all honesty. Jolene just wanted to have a pleasant conversation with Dolly about Samson, and how Jolene had managed to steal him from another Fire girl. Her father would disapprove of the whole thing, saying that your alliance is the best thing for you, but Harley had betrayed hers not only once, but twice now. Jolene was pretty sure that what she did was a favor to Samson. Jolene hadn’t had a chance to flaunt her victory towards Harley because the girl had been staying under the radar. Jolene was almost positive the girl wasn’t even staying in the Fire dorms anymore for fear of being attacked. If given the chance, Jolene would attack her and take great pleasure in it. Granted Harley was more powerful than she, but it still would be nice to get a few throws in there before being overtook. Then all Jolene would have to do was tell the other Fire students and Samson, then Harley was as good as dead.
Well, maybe not as good as dead, but close enough. Now that she and Samson were together, Jolene saw what it was like to be his girlfriend. It was quite sweet, but she could tell his thoughts weren’t always on her. That upset her greatly that she wasn’t the person he thought about all the time. Well, she would just have to change that, wouldn’t she? Jolene smiled to herself, but was quickly taken out of her trance because of the car stopping. They were about twenty miles away from Maple Hollows at a very large house, which is where Jolene’s father was keeping Dolly. It made Jolene bitter that her mother had to be here, completely in love with her father, when the man was out there having an affair with someone woman. Jolene was determined to figure out who the woman was, and dispose of her. Jolene would have to tell her mother about this mystery woman, and see what she had to say about her. When she entered the house, Jolene noted the security men everywhere, and thought to herself, ”My father tells her this is a house just for her, but it’s actually a prison to make sure she never escapes.” Being here many times, Jolene pushed her way through the security crowding around the door to speak with her father, and ran towards her mother’s room. When she opened it, she found Dolly sitting next to the window with a book in her hand.
Jolene smiled at her mother, and went to sit down next to her. “Mother! I’ve missed you!
” Jolene was more than excited to see her mother; it was like a lifetime since the last time she had been able to see her. Dolly looked well, but there was a sadness in the woman’s eyes that Jolene could read clearly. Dolly greeted her, and Jolene began to fill her mother in on what was happening in the outside world. The blonde told her mother immediately about Samson and Harley just incase her father would try to eavesdrop or something. Dolly gave Jolene some advice on how to handle the other girl, and Jolene took every word to heart. An hour had gone by, and her father was knocking on the door telling her it was time to leave. Jolene pressed a kiss to Dolly’s cheek, and said she would return soon with pictures from prom, and news on how everything went with Harley. A few hours after her visit, Jolene found herself back in Maple Hollows, and struggling to find something to do. Obviously she wanted to hang out with Samson, but he seemed to be too busy for her at the moment. So, Jolene headed towards town hoping that something would catch her eye. Maybe she even hoped that she would run into Harley since it was Winter Break, and Harley’s grandmother lived in town. Jolene tsked at the thought of running into Harley. The blonde wanted a fight, and she wanted it now. Sadly though, Jolene didn’t find what she was looking for, instead she found the library. With nothing else to do, Jolene found herself walking inside to see what books they had, and to keep warm. Stupidly she had dressed light, and wasn’t expecting it to be as chilly as it was. Jolene browsed through the books, and finally settled on One Black Rose by Maddy Edwards. It seemed to grab her attention, and she needed a distraction from Samson until he gave the okay to come see him. Jolene settled down at table, and started to read. Joshua frowned as he strolled along the shelves of his library at home, subconsciously pushing in the spines of books that did not rest as far back as they should have. It was a pet peeve that he only felt with his own literature-related possessions--if the books were not organized properly, spine-facing-out or not resting against the back of the shelf then it bothered him. The medical section of the place looked like it had been touched lately and he suspected his father. As he went into the man's collection of books quite frequently to ponder and peruse he could not get angry at this. As long as he puts them back. Once upon a time he would have approached the man himself and asked if he still had any of the books on his person but right now things were awkward at best. He could not look Donovan in the eye without mingled feelings of revulsion, regret, guilt, confusion... he wasn't sure what to feel about him yet. He had agreed to try and bury the hatchet but that hatchet was a stubborn motherfucker indeed. He could not just drop the issue of being disowned as if it had never happened at all. There was a lot of damage to be smoothed over and repaired. Hopefully Donovan was willing to stick through it.
Speaking of the man, it seemed as if Joshua was going to have to talk to him after all. A frown played his lips as he realised this. He did not have the book that he was looking for in his collection and it would be more sensible to ask his father if he owned it rather than purchasing an entirely new copy for nothing. He could be careless with money but he didn't always insist upon wasting it for no reason. Had this happened before he was kicked out, Josh probably would have slipped into the man's office himself and looked through the shelves without asking. They'd once had that sort of mutual understanding when it came to books. If Donovan could look through Joshua's things then the courtesy had to be returned. Now it would have felt like trespassing. He still felt like a stranger here and was almost glad he'd decided to stay with Nell. He'd only dropped by for a bit to see Annabel but his little sister was out with a friend. He found Donovan in the living room, reading a book with glasses perched precariously on his nose. It was when he moved a hand to push them back up that the man seemed to take notice of his son, giving a bit of a start and sitting up straighter to get a better look at him.
"Joshua," he said. His tone was neither hostile nor particularly friendly. Josh gave him a nod in return. "Is there something you need?" Meeting the eyes of his father was uncomfortable. The striking steel gray that so perfectly mirrored his own was just another reminder that the two were connected by blood and by a silent, unspoken loyalty. Even though he didn't want to admit it (not even to himself) there was a part of Joshua that was glad things had went the way they did. He'd hated being exiled from his family. At the same time, the loyalty was different now. "I'm afraid I don't," said Donovan after Joshua gave the title of the book he was looking for. It felt like a fucking business deal rather than a civil conversation between family members. "Why not try the library?" Joshua didn't really like taking trips to the public library, he preferred the one at the Academy. It had loads of good books on many different subjects, enough for a bookworm like himself to get lost for hours. However, as the school was closed he recognised he had no other choice. "I guess I'll try that."
He had found the correct volume and was weaving between shelves and tables to get to the front desk and take it out when someone studying at one said obstacles caught his attention. He paused, frowning. Jolene. He and Harley had agreed to try and coax some information out of her but he had been unable to find the correct time during the school year. Better late than never? It felt strange to be purposely offering himself up as a friend just to wheedle some information out of a person but... hey, it was for Harley. She was a friend. Making his way over to the table, Joshua cleared his throat calmly and leaned against it. "Jolene, right?" He was pretty sure that as a Fire elemental she would be well aware of who he was but he wanted to play it cool. "Joshua. Do you mind if I sit?" He gestured to the table he was leaning against with a lazy hand.

Jolene wasn’t much for books, but she figured it was better than staying in house that didn’t even feel like a house. The blonde didn’t even know what she stayed there anymore; she could very well get her own home, but no. Her father wanted her to stay close to home so that he could keep an eye out on her, and make sure she didn’t cause any trouble. Well, he was just really crappy at that job, wasn’t he? Jolene was causing all sorts of problems and trouble, and he had no idea. That was the great thing about Jolene and her sneakiness. Her father claimed to be raising her properly, and unlike her mother. The thing was, Jolene was more like her mother than anything. Her father thought he had been saving her from the awful ways of her mother, but Dolly had told her those stories way before John had gotten rid of her. That very thought made Jolene bitter. John claimed to love Dolly, but she needed help, so that’s what he was giving her. It was a lie, and everyone in that household knew it! Jolene was beginning to get angry at the very thought of her father.
As she stared at the book, Jolene noticed another figure in the library. She didn’t pay much attention to them, but couldn’t help but feel like she may know them, but she could be wrong. Jolene glanced at her phone, but there was no text from Samson which disappointed her. She sighed, and flipped the next page, already getting bored with the book. Though when she did read one part, she scoffed at the thought of fairies. People were stupid if they thought that kind of thing was real. Though she supposed that her existence shouldn’t be real either, but that was different. Like getting an extra chromosome or something. She flipped to the next page, and skimmed through a bunch of it, scoffing at the parts that were just plain ridiculous. Seriously, the girl had to pick between two guys? The choice was obvious. The girl should’ve gone with Samuel since he was way more dangerous sounding. Jolene sighed in frustration as the girl believed she was falling for Holt. That was just stupid. Before she got the chance to slam the book down, Jolene was caught off guard by someone stepping up to her table.
The blonde glanced up at who she knew to be Joshua Dale. She was shocked to know that her knew her. She knew of him very well, and was unsure of how she felt with him approaching her out of the blue. She nodded in response to his question of her name, but hesitated when he asked to sit with her. Why would Joshua Dale want to sit with her? Jolene racked her brain for a reasonable excuse, but could think of none. “Sure, have a seat. Joshua, right?
” Jolene was curious as to what he wanted, but didn’t question it. “ What brings you to the library this cold day?” Her voice was cool, and she was resuming her natural self. Jolene felt less nervous for some reason, and refused to let this boy get to her, if he was here to get to her. [Sorry, this is a fail xD] [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Though he was curious as to what she was thinking, Josh kept his expression innocent and his demeanour relaxed as he proposed the question. If he studied her face too intently or else just seemed surprised by any reaction she might have, that would be dangerous for him, right? He had never really tried to trick information out of a person before. It felt wrong, sneaky, exactly like what the police had done to him. They'd questioned him for hours about the gang and made threats, planning to bring him down if he didn't help them get who they wanted. True, this was on a much smaller scale as it didn't involve murder or the authorities, but it still brought with it a sense of unease. You're doing this for Harley, he reminded himself and thus nodded when Jolene invited him to sit down. He didn't want to stray too far out of his normal demeanour and thus he merely said, "That's right," when she asked for confirmation of his name. He was not a bubbly and cheerful person. He'd been polite when asking if he could sit because a person did not act like an asshole if they wanted to sit next to you but he was not going to be chipper and overly friendly. They might not have been acquainted but plenty of Fires knew what his personality was like.
Isn't that a bit of a stupid question? Though he thought it, Joshua did not say the words aloud. Why else would he be in a library save for to read or study? Not wanting to offend her and risk his chances of getting anything at all the Fire elemental merely held up the thick medical textbook in explanation. "Just wanted to see if they had this." If you did not know Joshua or at least what he was like, the fact that he enjoyed reading medical textbooks might have seemed a little strange. But hey, he liked medicine and learning about it. He wanted to be a doctor both to please his father and to satisfy his burning--no pun intended--desire for knowledge. The medical field was always shifting and changing as new illnesses arose and new antidotes and cures were discovered. It was this change that excited him. One person could never know it all and there was always more stuff to be taking in. History was much the same, unfortunately there were not many high-paying careers that could sate his needs and his bank account. "What about you?" He wasn't the type that would ogle the title of the book she was reading. That was a bit rude if you didn't know someone personally.
Now, how could he properly move this conversation along? He figured she knew he hadn't come over here to sit and read in silence. There were plenty of unoccupied tables he could have been seated at instead and so talking probably wouldn't seem too out of place. He'd just need to make sure that he didn't say anything out of the ordinary. It was hard to try and distinguish the two things--acceptable and unacceptable. "Enjoying the break?" he asked at last, because it was something people never failed to ask during winter or summer holidays and so was indefinitely safe for that reason. "What have you been up to lately?" Maybe through these subtle questions and feigning interests he'd be able to find some things out. Joshua was a little apprehensive of Jolene perhaps inquiring about his life, but from what Harley had told him she liked to talk more about her current interests. Like Samson. Even if she did keep up some things for the simple sake of conversation Joshua was just planning to lie. Now lying, that was something he was more than used to.
[It's fine~]

Though there was someone else in front of her, it barely phased Jolene as her phone vibrated with a text message. She glanced at her phone eagerly, hoping it was Samson. But, it wasn’t. It was her father telling her that she needed to be home within two hours because they had something’s that needed to be discussed. Jolene scoffed at the message, and sent a quick text stating that she would be home when she pleased. Jolene knew that her father would be stewing by the time she did get home, but what was he going to do? Send her away? Jolene doubted it very much. He wouldn’t get all the benefits of raising a teenage girl, now would he? Jolene shoved her phone in her pocket, and focused back on the boy in front of her. It was true that Jolene had heard of him before, but didn’t find it a big deal that he was sitting in front of her right now. Every raved about how he was such a traitor, more so than Harley, and how he dated Nell Shepard. Jolene would normally look down on him, but she was curious about him in a way. Meaning she was curious on what he could do for her. Call her self-centered if you will, but that was just Jolene.
It was curious as to what he wanted. Jolene had heard that Joshua wasn’t much of a social butterfly. Then why talk to a tenth grade Fire student, whom held no importance to himself? What if he is interested in you? Jolene pondered the thought, but quickly dismissed it. From what she had heard, Joshua was very much with Nell, and it didn’t seem to be changing. Well, what if he is trying to get in good with a Fire student to help gain acceptance within the element? Now, that she could believe, but then again what did Jolene know about Joshua? Absolutely nothing. Jolene glanced down at the medical book, and looked horrified that someone would actually [I[want
to read something like that. “ You have quite an interesting reading selection you keep there.” She couldn’t help but think how boring it would be to read something like that. Seriously, was he that secluded from humankind that he had to waste his time reading books like that? Jolene glanced at the book that she had sat down on the table, then back to Joshua. “ I needed something to get my mind off my mother, so I came here,” she said honestly. Jolene had considered lying to him, but went against it. If she was honest maybe he would be honest with her. Jolene didn’t really believe that, but it was worth a shot. She leaned back against the chair, and got comfortable. Jolene glanced down at her nails for a brief moment before shrugging at his question. “ It’d be better if my boyfriend responded to my text messages, but I suppose he is working,” Jolene rolled her eyes as she said it. She was curious to know if Joshua knew of Harley and Samson’s breakup. Wait, didn’t Harley and Joshua use to be close? Jolene narrowed her eyes at Joshua before asking, “ Aren’t you friends with that Harley girl?” If this were the case, Joshua better be prepared to grab his book and walk away from her. She couldn’t have Harley’s friends snooping her business with Samson. “ Preparing for the holidays, and visiting my mother. Hopefully she can come home for Christmas this year.” What was the harm in telling him that? It was the truth, so. Jolene reversed the question to him, and asked, “ And you, Joshua? Are you enjoying your break?” [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

He had always considered it rather rude to check text messages and the like when you were holding a conversation with someone but Josh didn't like Jolene enough to care what she did at the current moment. Nell was the only exception to this rule in his normal, daily life. He always worried that it might be important if she called or messaged him and so he'd make a point to check it as soon as he could. If it was not serious he just waited until he was done conversation to reply. She did not have him on a leash and thus he had no qualms with making her wait a little for a reply if he was too busy to text. He noticed the look that she gave his textbook and lifted an eyebrow, though he did not openly challenge the expression. It wasn't for everyone, he knew that. "I have my interests," he shrugged in reply. He could have told her that he was planning to be a doctor and that it was why he loved medicine so much but what was the point? He didn't trust people with that information. "Ahh." Her mother? It surprised Joshua that she'd been so open immediately after meeting him for the first time. Is she lying? The suspicious and cynical part of him could not believe that someone could be so trusting but he tried to push it away. Why would she lie about that?
Her boyfriend. This was the information that Joshua had been waiting for. "You have a boyfriend? Ah, that explains the texts." He behaved like it was completely natural and that he suspected nothing at all. After all, he likely would have understood even if he wasn't trying to get something out of her. He kept in touch with Nell and checked her texts, though not as quickly as Jolene seemed to. "What's he do? Even if it's not work he could always be in class or something, if he's still in school that is." Josh shrugged non-committally. I wonder what Samson is doing right now? Of course, he wasn't one hundred percent positive that Samson was going out with Jolene. It was just a speculation that he and Harley had and for all he knew, they could have been wrong. He didn't think so. He might not have been certain but he had a suspicion based on what Harley had said and so he was going to try and get it out of her. A part of him wanted to threaten her and see if he could get things quicker that way but he reminded himself that it would be a low blow even for him. He'd been threatened for information before, he didn't like that.
Yes, he thought. "Tch, no," he scoffed. "Haven't you heard? Harley and I haven't spoken since that bitch crossed me in the first war." He thought of Jolene and how much she disgusted him as he spoke, hoping that his anger toward her worked when he applied it to the words about Harley. He was no psychologist, he didn't know how to make people believe things or watch for signs to see if they did. Then again, neither was Jolene. It was one of his few advantages. Would she be looking for loopholes or anything? He was a traitor, after all. Hopefully not. I wonder where her mother is? Where would someone need to come home from? His first thought was the hospital--maybe an illness or accident? Maybe she worked internationally or was enlisted in the army? Maybe a divorce had split up her parents and they lived in different places? There were too many options to figure it out without more information and Josh wasn't nosy enough to ask. Not even of Jolene. "It would be better without the snow," he said disdainfully, telling truth in that he hated the cold, "but yeah, I've always liked the winter break." It was a small truth even though he didn't explain that this was because of Christmas and such.

Most people, including her father, found it rude of her to text someone while conversing with them. Jolene could care less about that. Jolene felt that she was allowed to hold conversation with more than one person, even if one of those conversations were through text. What if were important? Jolene could miss some of the most important things if she just ignored text messages. Plus, that’s why they invented text messaging, wasn’t it? To be less rude about things when you were having a face to face conversation. If something tragic were to happen, someone could simply text it, and then they wouldn’t interrupt the other conversation. Jolene didn’t care if she annoyed this Joshua character anyways because he had come to her, so really he was intruding on a conversation that could’ve been happening before he had come over to talk to her. Which she still found oddly strange. An outcast to the Fire and Thunder community coming to strike up a conversation with her? Someone who was loyal to her element. Of course her thoughts went straight to Harley since the girl was also a traitor. It wouldn’t surprise her if the redhead was trying to get some information on her. Jolene supposed the girl had just given up on getting Samson though, which was fine by Jolene. Jolene flicked her eyes toward Joshua as he spoke, and nodded as if she cared about what he said. “That’s lovely. Not many people have the mind to read such books.
” Jolene couldn’t help but chuckle at his interest in her boyfriend. Really, who was that interested in that? Maybe he was because he was so secluded from the Fire community, and deep down Joshua missed his natural element. Jolene cocked her head to the side, and said, “ Yes, Samson Fisher. He’s a Thunder, do you know him?” Jolene paused at his text comment, and smirked. “ Actually, I was texting my father. He expects me home, and was reminding me what time.” Not many people knew of Samson since he was a mute after all, but then again a lot of people might know him. Jolene didn’t really focus on his social life so much as hers. It was more important that she been seen with him then vice versa. Jolene had to have it known that she had taken Samson from Harley, but she didn’t want it to get back to Samson. Jolene gave Joshua a polite smile before answering. “ He works at a shop for his mother. Well, adoptive mother, but mother nonetheless.” Whatever Samson was doing, it needed to end soon. Jolene had to keep tabs on the boy to make sure he wasn’t talking with Harley. She couldn’t have that, now could she? The blonde perked up at Joshua’s words. Interesting, Jolene hadn’t heard anything about this. This could actually work to her advantage in the future in trying to seclude Harley to the point where she never wanted to return to the Academy. If Jolene could get Harley to break that far, it would be the best accomplishment ever. “ I haven’t heard, but that is definatly news. I always thought you two were best friends of the sorts. Though over the summer she did talk about you somewhat. All bad things of course, but that’s how she is, isn’t she?” If Jolene could get someone else on her side to hate Harley, that would be the greatest thing ever. She’d need to learn things about her that Samson just wouldn’t give up, but she was sure Joshua would. “ What did she do?” Jolene made her blue eyes get big, and innocent looking. The question running through Jolene’s head was whether or not Joshua was telling her the truth. Jolene hadn’t actually seen the two together in a while, and had heard that they weren’t on speaking terms. Could this fellow be telling her the truth? It was a stretch, but Jolene was going to go with her gut in this one, and it said that he was telling the truth. “ I hate snow as well. I’m more of a summer person, but I suppose that has something to do with our element.” In truth, summer reminded her of her mother, and everything she stood for. “ It is a great time to relax, and just spend time with family,” Jolene added. Samson. The moment his name came up in their conversation, Joshua knew that he was going to have something to tell Harley when they next came into contact with one another. Even if Jolene caught on to what he was doing and stopped talking to him for fear of giving away too much, he'd gotten what he'd originally came for. That did not mean that he was going to get up right now and leave, having finished his goal, but it meant that the basics of the meeting had been successful. Jolene was dating Samson. Sure, she hadn't outright said that she'd broken the happy couple up in order to get him for herself but the signs were certainly pointing in that direction. After all, if she'd really been friends with Harley, why would she have taken advantage of a recent break up so soon in order to start dating Harley's ex? It was a cruel and heartless thing to do. Not usually something a good friend made a habit of, unless of course the person was selfish. Selfish people don't usually make the best of friends, anyway. He found himself liking Jolene less and less with each passing second. True, he wasn't the most brilliant or caring person in the world -- far from it, in fact -- but that was low even by his standards. He had to remind himself what he was here for in order to keep his temper from flaring up and the situation from getting out of hand. Keeping the mood neutral and normal, he shook his head. "I can't say we've met. Not that it's surprising -- I don't talk to a lot of Thunder elementals lately." He didn't sound bitter as he said this, merely like it was a fact.
"Ah," he said, accepting that without further comment. It wasn't too rude as long as it wasn't a conversation with a friend that she was having, right? He wouldn't really have cared regardless but the fact that the text was from her father solidified the need to check it. Josh hardly ever ignored calls from his own father when they were on better terms. Now ignoring the man seemed to be the only option -- everything else was far too awkward or difficult. Things were changing in his life. Resisting the urge to sigh, Josh focused on the conversation. He couldn't afford to space out in the middle of talking to someone. Self-absorbed as he could be at times, he had a goal in mind, here. He had neither known nor cared to know that Samson was adopted and so took the information lightly, instead focusing on the fact that Jolene was dating him in his head. Lying, cold-hearted bitch. It was hard to be pleasant to someone whom he despised but it was necessary nonetheless. "Well, hopefully he'll get back to you soon enough," he replied. Hopefully that response was enough to sate her for now. He didn't know what else to say to the fact that her boyfriend was not responding at lightning speed, or at least not as quickly as she wanted.
Though he wondered briefly whether Harley had actually said bad things about him during their period of not talking to one another, Joshua did not think much of it. He didn't hate his friend but seeing as he wanted Jolene to believe he hated her, he was careful in his response. "Oh?" he said with the air of someone that was mildly intrigued and irritated at the same time. He thought of his rage toward Jolene, channelling it again. "What sorts of bad things did she say about me? It's sad, I actually believed she might have been more honourable than that." He sighed and waved a hand. "I suppose it can't be helped that she's a callous bitch with no respect for the friendship we once had." It felt strange to say such horrible things about someone he was actually on good terms with but he knew it was all part of an act. If he could convince Jolene that he hated Harley then she might be more willing to talk or brag about the things he was interested in hearing, right? He certainly didn't plan on telling this bitch the truth about their argument and so he merely winged it from there on out. "Oh, she's just far too conceited for her own good. It got tiring after so long."
