The world was crisp, and cold. With each passing breath, a plume of warm mist rose into the air, dissipating moments later into nothing. Many people would find that hiking the trails in the middle of winter was stupid, but not to the hardy photographer. It was ingrained in the artist to capture the moments that no one else can; to put the simple things into a frame and freeze them in time forever. What separated the hobbyist from a true photographer was their capability to make the photo relive itself every time you look at it. Seline strives to be one of those true photographers. The world was always more beautiful through a lens. With a faint huff, the brunette thunder student wound her way down one of the hiking trails; she had no idea how far the trail went, but it did not matter. The day belonged to her, and so she decided to spend it out here taking photos. Anything was better than being at home.
It was not that her parents were unkind or horrible people. In fact, Seline knew that they were the total opposite. They cared for their daughter and wanted what was best. She knew they worried about her mental health after losing Charlie and Violet to the car accident. The wound was still fresh; images of her brother flashed through Seline's mind as though the horrible incident happened yesterday. Hell, with how much of a blur the past few months had been, it could have been. That morning was actually very peaceful for the McKay family; they had a decent breakfast and a few soft spoken words were shared. So, Seline wore a smile on her face as she stepped around a large rock nestled in the packed earth. Not much could ruin this beautiful winter day.
As her mind drifted to different memories and random, fleeting thoughts, Seline caught sight of a deer. A doe, who grazed quietly in a small clearing about fifty feet from where she stood. Amidst the snow and frozen dew, the image was nearly perfect. Breathing a sigh of awe, the brunette lifted her camera up to her eye and turned on the machine, waiting for the red square to alert her that auto focus was on. Seline hated auto focus, but in situations where animals were involved there was less room for error. Deer were flighty creatures, and snow was not exactly silent if someone disturbed it. All it took was the crunch of snow or the snap of a twig and the doe would be off in a shot. Seline smirked triumphantly as she clicked a few pictures, adjusting the lens a few times. She liked to have varying distances with the same picture just in case. It was not the same as photographing people, but it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Maybe Seline would run into someone while out on her hike, but the chances were slim. Who else was insane enough to wander the woods in the winter?

Paisley loved nature walks, and she loved the warmer winter day that had greeted her this morning as she woke up. The day was chipper, just as her mood; and the trail was long. She had the day for herself. With every breath the cold winter left her a puff of steamy air; she chuckled. It was almost as if she was smoking one of those god-awful cigarettes that Grandmere loved to slowly puff on with each day. She was getting weaker, and it was starting to scare here. She had to do something about that. It was getting worrying, always having to watch after Grandmere. Once they moved down to the Hollow for Paisley's schooling she figured her Grandmere would be okay, but it just proved that she wasn't, because she was getting worse as Paisley got closer to graduating.
She stepped and accidentally was too loud, sending a flurry of birds tweeting away from the trees around her, down the path a bit. She was about a quarter mile away from the town, and was happy to be out here. She saw a doe and a buck travel across the path a few yards ahead of her, and smirked. The wildlife out here was so cute, something she was still getting used to after the busy Versailles city. She and Grandmere had moved out here just two years earlier, after it proved havoc trying to go back and forth between the two towns. Stepping forward with a sigh, she just came into view of a girl taking pictures of another deer. She stepped quietly up to the girl.
Paisley walked quietly up to the girl, and accidentally stepped on a twig that was jutting out of the snow covered trail. She cringed as the deer looked up and booked it in the other direction. She felt bad about that, the girl looked very interested in her picture taking process. Then Paisley noticed how young the girl looked, probably a freshman in the Academy. She thought for a moment to call out her apologies, but she decided to wait until the girl got up closer to her. She didn't want to destroy some of the sanity in the girl by yelling out, most of the time that just resulted in the person getting yelled towards to jump and scurry away like the deer Paisley just scared away. She took a few more steps, this time not being as quiet, and got within two yards of the girl.
"I'm. So. Sorry!" She said, her hands clasped behind her back and her head down. She truly did feel bad, so that was why she was acting as though she was terribly shy. The dark colour of her hair clashed with the snowy ground. It made her feel like she was sticking out like a sore thumb. Her white pillowy winter jacket made her feel like she was part of the snow, as did her white skinny jeans. Her boots were white and fluffy. So she was in a very white mood today, and her hair just destroyed that notion. As did the red lipstick that lined her lips, but Paisley couldn't see that, so she didn't let that bit bother her at all.

As Seline exhaled, a faint wisp of hot breath fogged up the screen on her camera; her hands felt like ice as she tried to keep the electronic steady, but it was becoming difficult. She blinked back the cold wind a few times before placing her eye against the eyepiece once again, the deer in sight. At the sound of her lens clicking shut, a sound came from behind her. Snap! While her focus was still on the deer, she watched helplessly through her zoom lens as the beautiful creature turned its head towards the noise. It twitched its ears a few times in acknowledgement that it was no longer alone, and with a swift kick to the snow the deer was off into the trees. Seline sighed and released her camera, allowing it to hit her stomach with a small bump. It was not in the girls’ nature to respond positively to someone ruining her perfect photo opportunity; Seline had few pleasures in this world, and photography was one of them. She had loving parents, and school was going okay with grades, but when it came to making and keeping friends it felt damn near impossible. So when she was not at home or studying she was out doing her own thing and not bothering a soul. And yet people still want to bother me. She had to think this through logically, however, before turning around and responding to the person who apologized for the disturbance.
Obviously the girl was keen on taking a walk too; the day, though cold, was soothing and beautiful. The trails were still visible and wildlife appeared rather abundant given the season. Seline could be sure that she was not the only one who enjoyed being outdoors and encompassing themselves in nature. In her conclusion the brunette realized that it was simply an honest mistake and sincerely horrible timing. So, instead of turning on the girl with a hard glare and a biting sarcastic comment, she swiveled her head around with a half smile. Seline placed a hand on her camera and nodded at the other girl, trying to act as cordial as possible. “Don’t apologize. Deer spook easily anyway. It was bound to take off sooner or later. Some photographic pieces don’t stand still.” It helped Seline to know that the girl apologized and seemed genuine in said apology. She did not do well with people in the first place, so if the girl felt the least bit threatened she would shut down and become a vindictive and relentless snake. This female did not make her feel on edge, so decided it was best to retain her friendlier nature. After all, with so few people in her life, Seline did not exactly have room to be picky at this point. Quickly the studious girl noted the bright white apparel of her slight acquaintance; it would not be something she would wear, but it suited the other quite well. Seline smiled. “What brings you out and about in this chilly weather?” Her eyes averted themselves to the snow at her feet; it was a bad habit obtained over time to avoid eye contact for extended periods of time. It made her feel less vulnerable and prevented anyone from getting too close.
