YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP It was far less easy to get away from the academy as she had just really wanted to just camp out in the dormitories, but of course, she had to get out in the open. Out into the fresh air. She really hated being inside, it was actually bugging her that she had actually wanted to stay inside. That never happened!
Addition to that, when the fresh wiff of earth hit her nostrils, she breathed in deeply, letting the slight breeze blow her hair around, that's when a small smile eased onto her lips and she ducked her head while she followed a path that seemed to be embedded into her brain. As she had been traveling the path for close to three years now. Who wouldn't have that memorized by now?!
Her foot steps were quiet as she walked the dirt path, heading northwest from the sweeping green lawn, swallowing the lump in her throat as she pulled up her hot pink hood, and then stuffed her hands into her pockets. She sighed, her hazel eyes scanned around the area for a moment before she spotted the lake.
The beige sand looked inviting, and she smiled, brushing her dirty blonde hair back from her face. As she stepped forward, she had just happened to step on a twig. And then she jumped at the twig snapping, looking down at it. Her black converse was covering it, so she stepped back and went around it. That's when she stepped onto the sand, feeling her shoes sink into the sand for a moment.
That's when she sat down, feeling the sand cross her bare legs as she was only wearing dark denim shorts, a hot pink jacket, a white shirt, and black converses. And technically it wasn't really cold to her so she looked out into the lake, watching the water ripple as she guessed random things were crossing it, and a half smile tugged at her lips. So she crossed her legs, and kept her hood up, including her hands stuffed in her pockets.
That is before she heard foot steps, but she kept looking out at the water. She wasn't that curious at the moment.

Average weather, average day. It was fairly chilly outside, but no surprises there--it was November in British Columbia. What else did anyone expect? If you lived there most of your life, however, the chill was more or less an irritant than a burden that a lot of tourists struggled with. Most of the residents of the Hollow found it amusing to watch newcomers struggle with the cold, and Devin was definitely no exception. No matter though, the boy loved his jeans, and never missed an opportunity to wear them even if he was not cold. Today was no different in his attire, for he took to wearing his favorite pair of denim, matched with a black polo and a regular pair of sneakers. He was not skating today--at least, there were no plans--so his Vans were abandoned in his closet for the time being.
After classes were over for the day, Devin decided that a walk around the grounds would be a much needed detour of the day. Sure going home to his sister and the TV was not so bad sounding either, but his energy would not allow him to do so just yet. Thus, the blonde took off across the grass and set off to meander for a while. The war was raging within the castle walls, so it was a pleasant feeling to meet the sound of sheer silence. The wind bustled by his body en route to its unknown destination, leaving a few goose bumps on his skin. If any element of nature made him feel the bitter bite of winter, it was the wind. For whatever reason it intensified the cold around him, even if, at a stand still, the air felt comfortable. Go away wind. You're annoying. He thought to himself, a partially aggressive tone in his thoughts. The wind taunted him by blowing him back a little.
"Very funny," He muttered as he pushed on wards, the lake coming into view. It was serene. The water sparkled against the bright sun, its warmth absorbed by winter's chill. Ripples edged their way to the shore, tiny little sparkles catching his eye every now and again. If there was any place to go around and be lazy by yourself or with friends, this was the place. As he approached the inviting sand, a figure came into view. The jacket definitely seemed familiar, and so he hustled towards the person sitting in the sand with a smile on his face.
A few shuffles and countless grains of sand stuck in his socks later, he stood behind the female (obviously, the jacket was bright pink) and cleared his throat. "Now what's a pretty thing like you sitting out here all alone?" He queried with a smirk as he sat down beside her, sliding off his shoes to rid them of the irritating sand particles. "Haven't talked to you in a couple of days, everything going okay?" They had known one another since their start at the school, but only made friends at the beginning of the year. So far he and Autumn had clicked quite well. She was not only in his element, but she was a caring person, and not bad looking either. That last part was quickly nixed out of his mind as he thought about Marianna, although it was not in his personality to do so. They were really good friends, and he really enjoyed her company.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Autumn was lost in her own thoughts. Thoughts about Devin. Their situation. Him going off and dating other girls when she secretly liked him. Marianna, she believed was his newer one over the last couple of weeks. And she stirred a little bit, uncrossing her legs, and stretching them out in front of her before she crossed them at the ankles and leaned back on her hands for a moment. Of course, still watching the water.
It was beautiful.
That is until she heard someone clear a throat, it had been the person she had been avoiding the last couple of days. All because of his dumb girlfriend. She hated the girl. Not to mention she was jealous of her. And a sigh escaped her mouth as she heard him call her pretty, and than sat down next to her.
She looked at him out of the corner of her eye, pushing back her hood, pulling her hair and putting it on her left shoulder. ”I don't know. Needed to get away for a while.” Short and sweet. It was obvious she was mad, so indeed she shrugged her shoulders and crossed her legs again. Almost becoming uncomfortable. ”I don't know Devin, how's it going with the slut?” Her voice was flat as she looked at him, her eyes flickering.
She was pissed off.
How dare him come here and flirt with her! When he had a girlfriend for that matter!! It didn't seem right, and it didn't go down with her alright. It sucked that he did think it was okay when it really wasn't. But she didn't like to voice her opinion, so she went a long with, sniffling, before looking down at her lap, playing with her hands. ”Sorry..I'm not in a good mood..Just kind of down I guess.” She shrugged her shoulders. He knew her well enough, he could figure out she was mad.
Well it was kind of obvious anyway. Calm your role, Autumn...No reason to get upset, it's not his fault..Oh that's a total lie! Its his fault for dating her and coming here trying to flirt!” She was having a mental battle. And it wasn't as fun as it seemed because her brow furrowed, but when it pulled to a stop, she looked up at the water again, and then him, and gave him a half hearted smile.

Devin suddenly felt an odd sensation between them; like he ignited some sort of raging fire unintentionally. As he set his shoes to the side, she responded to him in a rather surprising way. When Devin rotated his head to look at her, she had adjusted her position, hair tucked neatly over her left shoulder. He blinked a few times, then responded with a small smile. "Yeah, I know that feeling. That's kinda how I ended up out here. Luckily for me I didn't have to wind up sitting alone."
As he watched her, the anger more than obvious when she spoke; it was rather disturbing how hostile she sounded. In all of the times they talked with one another, never in that time had he heard her act aggressive with him or anyone else...was this a darker side of Autumn that he had yet to see? Or was blinded to? Devin did have quite the awful habit of seeing past people's faults if they were not immediately obvious, the end result always a disgusting sight. When he saw the confrontational attitude in another person, his first reaction was to back down and walk away from them in order to avoid further issues. Not here though. This was not a stranger, or an opposing elemental, so there was no reason he shouldn't stick around.
Devin frowned slightly. "Why the hostility? I'm not so sure that it was entirely necessary..." His thoughts drifted towards Marianna, trying to think of an instance where she might have upset Autumn or did something he may have passed over, but nothing came to him. It puzzled the poor boy beyond comprehension, and now guilt ate away at his insides. Did he do something wrong? Was Autumn upset with him, or was he the temporary punching bag? No matter. He scratched the back of his head. "I'm sorry if she upset you or something. I'll talk to her about it if so. I don't want her making you mad." It was a very true statement; Devin hated seeing his friends upset or hurting in any way, especially if he may have played part in it.
For a few brief moments, his eyes trailed over the lake. The wind picked up every now and again, it's wintry bite blowing past him effortlessly. It was those moments he wished a jacket was nearby, but alas the only one he owned was back at home for the day. With a slight sigh, the blonde put his socked feet in front of him and leaned back on his hands, tilting his attention back towards Autumn. His brows furrowed slightly at the mentioning of having a down time; that was no good! She was wringing her hands as she sniffled a little--what was going on? Did someone hurt her? They better not...
"Don't apologize," He soothed, smiling back at her boyishly. "We all have our off days. I'm just sorry you're so upset." He hated seeing this, but what else could he do? It made him feel quite helpless, actually. Devin shifted his hands a little in the sand to get a better position before looking down at his lap, then back up at her face. Guilt continued to prick at his conscience like sharp needles. "Is there something I can do to help? I can always injure myself to make you laugh...or tell a stupid knock-knock joke...whatever you want." Little did he know that those last three words could always be taken further than what they were intended, but the boy was oblivious to the obvious and thus said them carelessly anyway. No matter though; he always meant well, even if one did not think so.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Autumn felt incredibly horrible for a few moment after she had said those things. There was no typical reason to get hostile with Devin. He may have chosen his girlfriend, over her, but it wasn't the first time this kind of thing happened. She would soon get over it. So she sighed, ever since she was little she had been over-ooked. As they all classified her as an outcast. But those days were over. But it almost seemed as the past was repeating itself. What the effing hell?
She peaked over at him for a moment to see his small smile. He is so adorable when....Knock it off Autumn! He isn't single anymore.
Her eyes drooped slightly, she had no right thinking those thoughts about someone's boyfriend, she knew how it would fill if someone else was talking and thinking thoughts about her boyfriend. She would be pissed, her emotion range off the chart. It was possible it already was. So she looked at him head on when he replied to her hostility and she bit the inside of her lip, her hair wiping around in her face as a puff of wind chilled her face, turning her nose pink slightly. Her head nodded slightly to his words ”Sorry, and no it really wasn't necessary, so I apologize.”, her shaky hands reaching back to yet again to pull her hood up to cover her ears that were already pink. Winter sucked. Big time. As a matter of fact, she liked Autumn better. At the thought she smiled slightly. It was much mixed with being angry, and being down at the same time. But Devin didn't need this so she perked up slightly, turning to look at him again, the half smile still on her face but it quickly dropped when he talked about talking to his girlfriend about making her angry. She wasn't exactly mad at Devin, or the girl, it was really irrelevant to hate someone you hardly knew. And she barely knew his grilfriend. In addition too that she blew out a puff of air, shaking her head for a moment, ”No, Devin. It's fine. Really. I guess I just have something deep within me and it shoved that out.” She defiantly had something deep down. It was a big secret that she had told no one. Not even her best friend. She was scared someone would either over hear or run back and tell Devin that she liked him. And then he would probably think she was strange and never say a word to her ever again. She once again nodded about everyone having off days, ”I guess, I just don't like having them. I like being bubbly, and stuff like that. But having down days you can't really do tat, now can you?” She laughed slightly, before adding, ”But it's fine...Don't worry about it.” She turned her head away, and coughed into her shoulder before looking at the lake and then him again. A gasp escaped her for a moment and she reacted a little to fast about injuring himself to cheer her up, ”No no no! Please don't.” Oh, that so showed she liked him. Maybe he didn't notice, let's hope so. She didn't want him to know. She was terrified to know his answer, to see his reaction, to watch him go off and tell other people, including his girlfriend that she had feelings for him. It would suck. Because than she would have to have that drama on her shoulders about his girlfriend always stealing him away, or giving her a dirty look. ”But, really, it's fine, alright?”[/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - - status: COMPLETEtagged: SMEXY DEV-DEVwords: TOO LAZY, BUT HOPEFULLY OVER THE 200outfit: white shirt, hot pink jacket, dark denim shorts, black conversesnotes: It suuucks. Devin smirked and looked at her, drawing his knees to his chest and wrapping his arms around them in a lazy fashion. Autumn had been his friend for a while, and although today the girl seemed a little off, he enjoyed her company none the less. "Hey, it's no problem. If you're having a rough day I can let you off the hook." In fact, Devin was not even searching for any type of apology--the boy was quick to forgive and forget, especially with a friend. It was probably was made it easy to bully him around most of the time, because he rarely ever threw his guard up. It was definitely something he wished to fix at some point, but never got around to doing.
The blonde rested his cheek on his knees, looking up at her with his boyish features and a small frown on his face. What could it be that was bothering her? Sure he noticed that Autumn had not been around the past few days, but in his mind he took that as her having a lot of things to deal with. School could definitely be hectic near the end of the year, and of course she was a pretty girl--no doubt she had a guy keeping her occupied. Slowly Devin shuffled his feet and rotated his body a little to face her better, cheek never losing contact with his knees. "Do you want to talk about it? I'm always willing to listen and help out when I can...if you don't want to it's fine but...I don't like to see you hurting." It was the truth. To see her sad it...it actually hurt him. A lot. He couldn't explain it, but seeing Autumn look so down bothered Devin.
Instinctively, the blonde freed one of his arms and place a comforting hand on her shoulder, squeezing it lightly for reassurance. It made Devin feel guilty to see people look so tormented. Was it his fault? Did he say or do something wrong, that upset her? Either way guilt made his heart drop. He would never intentionally do anything to hurt a friend, especially a loyal friend like Autumn. "No one does...and I'm sorry you're dealing with it. But hey, I don't expect you to be bubbly and happy all of the time. Then you aren't being, well, you. And you is awesome." Devin offered one last supportive squeeze before lowering his arm, a smile now replacing the frown.
He wondered what Marianna was doing right now, and if she even remotely cared about where Devin was at during that time. Their relationship was kinda rocky, although it was not his fault. A flirt Devin may be, but a guy without loyalty he was most certainly not. The boy had hit it and quit it a few times, sure, but both parties had decided on that final decision. If Devin started a relationship with someone, his devotion to them would never waver unless there was a damn good reason for it. And for Marianna, it was getting to that point. She hardly talked to him now, and he could have sworn he saw her with another guy. Alas his burdens were his own, and if Autumn was having her own off day he was not going to add to it.
Devin chuckled when Autumn got all up set about him offering to injure himself--she was such a thoughtful girl, very sweet. With a slight chuckle he readjusted his position and lifted his head, now looking her squarely in the face. "If it upsets you that much, then I won't. But I don't wanna see you down...I could maybe treat you to some hot tea or coffee? Or we could just sit here and stare at the lake too." With a half smile Devin swept his gaze over the lake again, the sun finally warming him up slightly. "You were coughing a bit earlier," Quickly the boy slid off his jacket and offered it to her. "Even if we go to get something warm to drink, I'll be damned if you catch your death out here."

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Autumn watched as he pulled his knees up under his chest and laid his head upon him and soon enough when the wind blew harder she shivered and did the same. So she sat there for a few long moments, running scenarios around and around her brain for why he would be dating a girl like his girlfriend. They didn't seem like they matched, and they certainty did not look well together either. Not to mention she barely saw them around! And plus, she always saw her throwing herself at other guys. Devin didn't deserve that.
Hell, no one did.
And at his let off the hook deal she cracked a half halfhearted laugh, she owed him at least that much. ”I really am sorry...You don't deserve that...” She shrugged her shoulders with a sigh and brushed her hair back and than rapped her slender arms back around her knees. Her eyes were dull as she looked around the lake, watching as mysterious animals chirped and made noises, than watched the ripples of the water suddenly happen.
It made her miss home.
But she pushed that to the back of her mind. It was not the time to start thinking about home. Well, what home really? Her parents didn't claim her...and she most definitely did not claim them. Who wouldn't claim their own daughter anyway? She guessed in her mind that they weren't really up to being parents. They still thought of themselves as stupid teenagers. That was how they acted anyway. They were in their forties...And still acted like they were seventeen. That was just ewh.
So a shudder went down her spin, mostly because of the thought, but the wind was also picking up. And that's when she heard Devin's voice telling her if she wanted to talk about it, he was here. And that really just made her want to blurt it out....Her mouth opened, and than the words slipped out, ”I like you, okay?!” She gaped at him, her eyes wide with embarrassment and terror. Well, that wasn't exactly how she wanted to tell him.
She swallowed, looking away, her face burning with a dark red. ”I am far from awesome...and I'm sorry..” She wouldn't make eye contact, she kept looking down at the sand under her or her legs. Which her eyes started to burn and she knew tears were threatening to spill, which she let one before she wiped it away with a shaky hand. Autumn Ryan did not cry.
Which at his next set of words had her coughing a bit more into her arm and she sighed ”If you really want too..That would be great,” She broke off for a minute, coughing wouldn't kill her, but she wanted to talk to him more..about what just happened and in general, ”Heh, I think that is nearly impossible, but sure.” She still wouldn't look at him, but smiled slightly at her hands as she slowly stood and brushed off her butt and the back of her legs.

Devin was not easily surprised by too many things—his life was full of random occurrences and unexpected twists and turns. He normally took whatever was thrown at him and ran with it, accepting the changes and odd happenings with a smile on his face and never attempting to look back. The same happened with his dad and step-mom, the same with past girlfriends, the same with…well, just about everything. But as he glanced out over the water briefly Autumn’s words actually caused him to jerk his head to look at her, eyebrows raised. “You mean…like me as in…a friend?” The boy was not so stupid to believe that, was he? Don’t be so naïve Thatcher. You knew what she meant… It was more the fact that he did not want to know what she meant. Did he return the feelings? He was not entirely sure. They had been friends for quite a while, and normally by this time if he was friends with a female they were at least fuck buddies in the beginning (except for Nell, of course). With Autumn that was definitely not the case, and so he assumed there were no feelings coming from the girl. Now that her affections were out in the open Devin was at a loss for words. His emotions were running in ten different directions. He smiled a little, if not hesitantly. “I mean…I…well…” I think I like you too, but…that’s something I cannot say. Devin shook his head. “I’m…glad you do.” He hoped that would be enough to let her know that some sort of feeling was there just…not completely sorted out or made much of any sense.
At the current moment, he was dating Marianna (even if it was becoming a bit one sided) and so telling another girl about his affections would be wrong, no matter how small his relationship was quickly becoming with the current girlfriend. However, the awkward moment was diminished a bit as she spoke again, a soft smile forming on his features. Why did she think negatively about herself? You just practically turned her down her feelings, that doesn’t help. He thought darkly, beating himself up on the inside. But what else could he do? Even Devin himself was not sure where his emotions were at right then, so to tell her anything would be wrong. No matter if his feelings went past the level of friends, he still cared for her greatly as a friend and would not wish to do that to her. Still smiling, he pulled his legs away from him and turned his full attention on Autumn. “You are awesome. And don’t apologize, okay? Please don’t…” Devin did not want the girl to apologize to him about her feelings, if that’s what it was about. But he had to admit…this scared him a little. What if these feelings she had for him were reciprocated at some point? Once all of the bullshit was out of the way and he was able to deal with Marianna, and home life, and everything else…this attachment freaked him out. He was used to hitting and quitting it, or being in relationships that were quite physical (like he and Marianna)…but with Autumn, it seemed different. Felt different. Devin simply could not see their relationship being either of those.
Glad for a change in the subject, Devin stood up with her and dusted the sand off of his clothes. The entire time after her confession Autumn avoided his face completely—he could somewhat understand, being as he could not reciprocate what she told him. Guilt plagued him silently within his heart, and he was not exactly sure why. Devin smiled at her and began to walk a little bit, stopping to look back at her. “Where do you want to go? We can go to Timmie’s…or I can make some back in the dorms. I’m up for anything.” Offering the dorms was a bit strange considering what just went on, but Devin refused to make their friendship awkward. That was the last thing he wanted, was to ruin a relationship with Autumn. He smiled at her and shook his head at her statement, clearly not convinced. “Oh, you never know what can happen. We can’t be too sure.” If there was one thing Devin was good at, it was making light of every situation, even if his insides were squirming relentlessly.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Freezing air brushed against Autumn's unusual pale skin, whipping her dirty blonde hair to the side as a strong wind casted itself from the west. Stupid wind. She shivered under her jacket and stuffed her hands back in her pockets, her cheeks burning as he denied her feelings. Which only made her feel worse than before, by the way. So she hid her face from him, her eyes burning with the threat of spilling more tears.
She opened her mouth for a moment but shut it quickly as he told her not to be sorry. She had a right to be sorry as she was crushing on a guy that had a girlfriend. But it happened to everyone. Except this was new to Autumn. She had always kept herself at arms length with people. Only that wasn't the case with Devin. Ever since they had really hung out at the beginning of the year had she been crushing on him and keeping the secret from him pretty well. Until that is, now.
Her stupid big mouth.
“You know what I meant. Don't play dumb.” Her voice was a whisper as she looked away from the ground that she had been looking at. She moved her feet slightly as another shiver racked through her body and she kept her gaze (still) away from his.
Autumn turned around, “I know what you meant.” She brushed off her back again slightly, feeling a few sand particles fall and she inwardly sigh. And at the 'I'm glad you do part', she let out a small laugh, “Yeah, so glad that I finally came out in the open when you have a girlfriend?” She stopped for a moment and than added under her breath, “Just my luck.”
Her head shook for a moment, her blonde hair swaying around her for a moment before she let out a puff of air, seeing a white mist starting to form. It almost seemed like the temperature was dropping quickly, or was that just her? She brushed the thought off, and finally dared a look at him through her hair as she still stood up, and than saw his small smile. Did he think it was funny? It most definitely was not! She was standing here embarrassed and all he could do was smile and turn her down on her feelings? It wasn't like she could just switch her feelings to an off button.
But she did wish that was how it worked.
Except how much she wished it could be that easy, life wasn't easy. If it was easy she wouldn't be in this situation right now. But, she was. And that was enough to show that life wasn't easy. Autumn never meant to tell him.. She was going to tell him at a later date, but it was to late now.. She had blew her cover now only about five minutes ago even though it felt like an eternity. A shaky sigh escaped her as she heard start to stand up and brush off his clothes, but her head shook.
“I never meant for you to find out that way, Devin. I am so sorry.” Her voice was a whisper as she turned around again to see him start to walk off and than stopped to look back at her, the sand sinking under her feet as she listened to him speak. He had such a great voice that almost put her at ease. But as he watched her she took a few steps forward, still avoiding his gaze by looking down at her feet as she started to walk.
Almost is the key word there.
“Anywhere but here, but let's go to Timmie's,” She needed to be around socialization and not just be alone with Devin, “Yeah, I guess so..” A small smile teased with the side of her lip, and it showed for only a few seconds. If Devin was good at something, it was his humor.

“I wasn’t trying to…” Yes, Devin was actually trying to play dumb, but it was a subconscious reaction more than anything. Did it feel nice to have Autumn admit her feelings? It scared the blonde to admit it, but deep down he appreciated knowing how she felt about him. There were probably many reasons for that appreciation, but he could not seem to pinpoint any of them in particular. It hurt him to see her so upset, but what else could he do? He felt completely helpless now, and it was possible nothing he said could alleviate the situation. For once, Devin was at a slight loss for words in the ‘encouragement’ department. Do I like her?...The only reason I never chased after her was because she seemed disinterested…
Sure the blonde loved to chase the girls, but if one of them did not seem keen on his flirtatious antics and kept him at a distance, then he was very quick to relent and leave them be. Devin only liked the chase if the one he was after showed interest in him in return. Now that Autumn displayed said interest…he was stuck. There was no way he could ruin such a good friendship. What if she got upset with him, or he did something wrong? What if, after they began dating, she delved deeper into his past and saw something that made her want to walk away? Devin had a lot of girls behind him now, and Autumn seemed like a special girl. She deserved someone that could give her a first everything. He had no more firsts. Autumn deserves better… But Devin kept all of this to himself. In that instant, he decided that even though he and Marianna were practically non-existent, it was best not to reveal anything to Autumn. He wanted her to find someone better than what he could offer. I don’t think I ever cared that much before. What is wrong with me? It freaked Devin out at this thought. Maybe the feelings were there, after all.
He frowned at Autumn as she spoke—clearly this secret had gone on for a while, otherwise she would not have sounded so upset. Guilt gripped his throat as he tried to see her face, but kept it hidden. But what else can I do? I’m not going to let her be with someone like me. Instinctively, but hesitantly he grabbed her arm to stop her, his blue eyes trying to catch hers. “Look, I just…please. I don’t like seeing you this way. You deserve happiness, Autumn. A lot of happiness.” It was a very roundabout way of saying she deserved better than what he had to offer, without outwardly saying so or bringing up any of the thoughts that were running through his head. Did he want Autumn to stop liking him?...no, oddly enough he didn’t. But the girl needed to get herself a guy that did not have such a filthy past. She deserved that. He also had a bit of a thing for Harley before any of this with Autumn, and did not think it fair to run between the two. Harley was very different from Autumn, however—it was possible that their little thing with one another would be short lived. Devin did not really know. Could it be rebound? Very possible. For a moment he almost hit himself in the face. None of this thought process was making any sense what-so-ever!
Her voice broke through his massively chaotic thoughts at just the right time. Smiling softly at her, Devin tried to push away everything else and focus on their friendship. That was very important. He did not want to lose that. “Like I said, please don’t apologize, okay? Everything is fine.” Devin knew that it might get awkward at times but that was better than their friendship disappearing completely. It was important to him. At the approval of Timmie’s he quickly stepped up and began to walk with her towards the coffee shop, very eager to get warm. With the chilling wind against your face it was quite unpleasant. Unfortunately for Devin, his mind was actually trying to focus on the cold weather. Anything to distract from the situation at hand. It was hard to though. Part of him was mad that he did not chase sooner, even though she showed no interest, and the other part of him was guilty that he was not good enough for her. There was nothing to placate the raging whirlpool of thoughts. That is, until he had an idea. The prom is here…I should take her. I know she might say no after all of this but… It sounded stupid, but he could not take Harley due to the war so that was out of the question. Marianna could go to hell for all he cared.
“Hey, Autumn?” He glanced over at her, finally catching her features. It killed him that she looked so down, but there was nothing to be done. “I know that…well…” Devin sighed. “Would you want to join me for the junior/senior prom?” Why should she say yes? Autumn had no idea that he and Marianna were no longer together…so now this was going to sound even more awkward than before. “Me and Marianna we…we aren’t together. She cheated on me.” It took him this long to say it, but if he didn’t then Autumn would surely say no. “It’s been kinda rough. So I apologize if I don’t seem responsive…but I figured maybe you were interested…? Just a friends night out to relax?” He knew it would hurt her to say friends, but it had to be done. I’m in such deep shit right now. Such deep shit.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Autumn sighed slightly as she took another step. It wasn't like her not to talk or face Devin, but how could she if she had just told him she liked him and he didn't really accept it? She closed her eyes for a moment, her head falling slightly. It was clear that she really just wanted to get out of there or change the subject. But how could she change the subject if well she couldn't even look at him without either blushing, or crying. Either way she was still avoiding each eye contact moment she could.
Except when she sneaked a peak out at him through her hair for a moment.
A frown was on her lips as she slowly fell back into her thoughts. He has a girlfriend...Get over it...You'll find someone different....He doesn't want you. Simple as that. Yeah, he didn't want her...so why was she still trying to get him? It wasn't fair to herself nor him for that matter. It's just a silly crush. It would be gone in a couple of weeks...Hopefully. If she just ignored him, separated herself a little more...She would probably find someone else to like.
Oh, who was she kidding. It's almost impossible to get over a crush that quick. Especially if you have had it since the beginning of the year. But she had to do something. She couldn't just be a second choice. But maybe if it was Devin, she would put up with it...No she would not. She's not a second choice or a door mat for some guy.
She sighed again, trying to get her thoughts in order. But that is until Devin latched a hold of her arm to get her to stop walking. Which if she may put in; she had no idea that she was still walking. Her eyes lifted to the sky for a moment before allowing him to turn her around to face him. Except she kept avoiding his gaze even though he kept trying to catch hers. And than he talks about happiness; and that makes her almost have like an angry flash. “Me being happy? Are you even happy Devin? Oh, I guess you are.” She pulled her arm free, her eyes finally reaching his face to lock eyes with them.
Her eyes were dull and sad as she pulled herself away from him to keep walking. “Everything is not fine!” She felt like shouting but she kept her voice even but with an edge that wouldn't disappear even if she really wanted it too. But she had to stop being this way. It wasn't like he could help the way he felt. Just like her. So move on..Autumn. She swallowed and looked at him; a blush creeping up on her face as she heard his question. Did he just ask her to prom? What the fudge...Didn't he just say..Oh forget it Autumn! He just asked you to prom! She smiled slightly.
This was her dream...Going to prom with a guy she really liked...But than he added the friend part. That made the smile disappear and she sighed. Thanks Devin...Break me even more.. She flinched slightly, looking away. At lest he asked... She sighed, and looked up at the sky before stopping to turn towards him. “Sure...Just,” She stopped before swallowing, “Just friends hanging out..” She tried to give him a half smile, but it didn't exactly work out. Fuck. He didn't want to be anything more but just friends.. the Friend zone sucked.

Guilt. So much guilt. It was hard to keep his emotions under control when apparently Autumn was very upset by this. But what could he tell her? That he was not good enough for her and she needed to find someone better? That was not how crushes worked, at least not ninety-five percent of the time. It was not something you could just get over in five seconds, and Devin knew that very well. To ask Autumn to forget about him and to make herself happy…well, that was a stupid request. It only became a solidified fact after the girl pulled away from him, an angry flare flashing across her face. He swallowed, unsure of what to do now. “No…no I’m not.” He whispered, running a hand through his hair as he looked up to try and avoid her hardened stare. The sadness was practically flowing off of her, and Devin felt like a piece of shit for it. “If you aren’t happy…” Was he going to say it? Was it true? Even he could not be sure what his mind was thinking right now, but there was no stopping himself. “Then I’m not happy.” A frown replaced any sort of smile he may have worn before—this was not going over well.
“I know it’s not. I shouldn’t have said that.” Devin himself knew that it was not fine. A good, decent girl revealed her feelings about him and all he could do was push her away because he felt she deserved something better. That was far from okay. Far from fine. He swallowed dryly, like he was downing sand. Devin wished that none of this had happened today, but then again if it had not then he would have never known about her feelings and gone on hurting her over and over again by being with other girls. At least he knew why Autumn was so hostile towards Marianna—besides, the girl was right about that cheating bitch. He should have listened to Autumn. But he didn’t. Things would be so different right now. Devin did not know what kind of different that would be, but maybe it would not have been this. He sighed and watched her walk away, but after a moment she turned around and smiled at him faintly. Maybe this prom would be a good time to just enjoy her company and sort through his thoughts. That’s exactly what he was going to do. Devin smiled back at her, even though hers disappeared. After a moment he walked on and caught up to her, glancing down at the girl with a soft expression on her face. I wish that it was more than friends…but I can’t do that to you. It killed him inside to do it this way, but there was nothing else he could do.
“Excellent,” Devin smiled, trying to ease up the tension. He thought for a moment, and decided to try and make this as subtle as possible. “It’s a date then. I’ll meet you at the entrance to the mess hall?” Even though they were going just as friends, Devin could not help but feel something different. It was a good feeling, but he was still trying to decipher what it was. With a little smirk he continued walking on to Timmie’s, hoping that they could enjoy the rest of their time together without too much anxiety.
