Nell could be considered easily entertained. It didn’t take much for her to be completely absorbed by something. If it caught her eye, it would be that way for a while. And so, the discovery of the Gameboy Color was something that had kept her occupied for days. Growing up, she had been living in squalor, and so her parents didn’t have the money to buy the newest game consoles or toys. It didn’t bother her much since she didn’t really know what she was missing out on. False imprisonment kept her sheltered from many things, including a childhood. Even if they had the money, would her parents have bought the twins whatever they wanted? No, probably not. Nell didn’t know everything about her mother and the way her mind worked—she’d never wanted to—but she was pretty sure that the woman wouldn’t allow her to have a childhood. Even Tilly, the twin who she saved all her love for. Mia didn’t understand things like that anymore.
This was something Nell never thought about. She searched for distractions in her life, and the Gameboy was definitely one of them. After finding it in one of the yard sales she liked to haunt, she sat outside and played with it. Really, it was one of the only things that could keep her still. Nell usually played at her father’s house, especially when Jane was over, so she wouldn’t have to deal with them. Plus, it added to her image of impudent teenager. The game was something that kept her amused and entertained. Even with the money to afford the newest consoles, she found the little yellow device to be incredibly interesting.
Right now she was playing it in the mess hall, another one of her favorite haunts because it was full of something she loved. Pokemon allowed her to multi-task since it didn’t require her to button mash all the time, and so she could use one hand to eat her food and the other to choose attacks. ”C’mon, Pikachu…” she muttered, eyes focused on the screen. Instent and serious about this game, it prevented her from really looking around at others. She sat alone today since she didn’t see Josh. Sure, there were quite a few people she could have sat with, but she didn’t want to be rude since she’d be playing with the Gameboy. Nell was friendly, though, so if anyone wanted to sit and talk with her she’d immediately turn it off and give them her usual pleasant smile. The thing wasn’t consuming her, after all. Some liked to stay holed up in their basement to play their games, but she didn’t think that was something she’d enoy. The outdoors was her environment, and perhaps that’s another reason why the portable electronic was good for her—unlike an Xbox or Playstation, she wouldn’t have to sit inside her tiny apartment.
Feeling that her legs were tensing up, she stretched them out, Timberland boots thumping against the floor as she moved her feet around. She wondered how many New Yorkers there were in the school, that would take notice of the jersey she wore over her leggings. She couldn’t help the pride she had in the city that had once been her prison—Nell wanted to have pride in something. And that wouldn’t be herself, so she chose the sports team from her hometown. The Bronx was not the best place to have grown up, her home environment hadn’t been the best place to be raised in, but that didn’t mean she could hate a country because of it. ”Hell yeah!” she said rather loudly when she caught a Mankey. She ducked her head after, noticing people looking over at her, but the smile on her face was mischevious. I don’t even care, I got a Mankey.
