Joshua yawned and pulled back the tab on the coffee cup, having gotten an extra large from the mess hall as well as something that resembled a pastry as a snack. The latter was a little dry but otherwise tasted pretty good, and it was gone within moments, chased down by the black liquid he drank quickly. The graduate made a face at the taste--coffee had never been a preference of his, but the mess hall did not serve tea in the mornings and he had to get to class really quick, not having the time to drive ten minutes to Maple Hollow for Tim Hortons and then another ten minutes back. A glance at his watch made him curse softly under his breath and take the nearest staircase to the upper levels where a majority of the college classes were held, not wanting to be late. He was hardly ever late for class and he didn't want to be stuck in detention for something so cheesy and mundane. Not only that, but he had an alright reputation with most of his professors and it wasn't something that he wanted to ruin. Josh had never been a teachers pet or a suck-up, but he'd always tried never to get on their bad sides, either. Marks would be affected if the teachers loathed you and so he tried his best to keep a clean record.
That morning, however, he was cutting it close. He had underestimated how long he had spent in the mess hall waiting for the new batch of coffee to brew, meanwhile wishing that there was a Tim Hortons just right there on campus for his convenience. Nevertheless, the coffee was of some help. Joshua was used to operating on an erratic schedule and could get up at almost any hour without complaint, but he'd had so much on his mind last night that he'd forgotten to set the alarm. It had only been when the dormitories had erupted in the last-minute rush of people getting to classes that the noise had awoken him and he had bolted from the dormitories. Unlike most of the morning arrivals, when Joshua came into class he looked more or less the same as usual. He had flattened his hair as he walked, straightened his shirt, adjusted his light sweater so that it looked like he'd been up and ready at the same time as everyone else, no rush needed. The coffee was less to help his awareness and more to aid in his appearance--he didn't look, thankfully, like he was going to fall asleep behind his desk. The gray-eyed graduate frowned softly as he noticed that his usual seat at the back of the room and away from most others was taken by a girl chatting animatedly to her friend, and a moment later he realised that the professor was not yet in the room.
Deciding not to make a fuss about the desk, he cast around for another open seat and sat down beside an Earth elemental whom he'd been partnered with recently but never really had much friendly conversation with before. It wasn't that he was an ignorant guy, he just wasn't all that sociable. This morning, however, he offered him a bit of a half-smile and asked, "Marcus, right? Know what happened to the professor?" Maybe the guy was just late or something. Though a lot of them tried to act like they were responsible and the like, not even the people who taught at the school were perfect. Running a hand through the back of his jet black hair with a slight yawn, Joshua took his bag off from his shoulder and kicked it under the desk. He didn't bother taking any books or even his laptop out, for he didn't yet know what they were doing. He glanced at the board where notes on the lectures were usually written but at present it was blank and thus completely uninformative. Oh well. Normally he might have been a tad restless, sitting in a room after drinking a cup of coffee and having nothing to do, but it was actually for the better. The more time he had to adjust to the caffiene rush, the better.

The alarm went off in a blaze of glory, most likely loud enough to wake the entire dorm in one sitting. Jolting from bed, Marcus hit the floor with a thud followed by another across the room. Both he and his roommate had not anticipated just how loud their new alarm would be, not had they prepared for anything of the like. Groaning, his roommate placed a firm hand on the floor and pushed himself up and onto his feet, trudging to the alarm and slamming a fist down on it. The alarm stopped almost instantly and Marcus glanced up at his obviously angry friend. "Next time, try getting an alarm with a soothing song...like Mozart or something. Not the trumpets of the second coming of Christ!" he shouted. Marcus rolled his eyes and sighed, grabbing the corner of his night stand and pulling himself up on his feet as well. Grabbing his light blue towel, Marcus slowly walked towards the bathroom, sleep obviously still on his mind. Once the door was closed, he stripped down and turned on the hot water, letting it get to its usual temperature for him before stepping in and sighing. It was the best feeling ever being able to wake up to a nice warm shower. Although the wake up call had been a little over the top, he was glad he would be able to recover from it. Now, it was just a matter of remembering to change out the alarm later today.
Hurrying through his normal routine, Marcus finished showering and wrapped his towel around him as he left the bathroom to get dressed. His roommate had classes later in the day, and yet he didn't feel bad about waking the guy up in the least bit. Its what he got for borrowing his clothes without permission yesterday and wearing his favorite shirt. It was only fair. Grabbing a new shirt, though it was not the one he had wanted, he sighed and threw it on the bed along with a pair of dark jeans. Slipping into his clothes, he glanced in the mirror to make sure everything was okay before spraying himself and grabbing his books. "Hey, run by the office and get my schedule for me on your way back." His roommate had to be the laziest person he knew. Nodding, Marcus smirked. "Sure thing," he said, betting on himself that he would most likely forget. With that thought in mind, he shoved his books into his bag and headed out the door.
Breakfast was the last thing on his mind this morning. He had way better things to worry about. A biology exam and an chemistry lab assignment, he knew that those were the things he had to concentrate on. Besides, getting into this school had been hard enough, now he needed to prove himself worthy of being here. Yes, he had perfect grades and attendance, but it was not enough. He needed to show them that he knew exactly what he was doing because in all truthfulness, he really did. Hurrying down the stairs and out into the morning air, Marcus took a deep breath in as he walked across campus, nodding towards a couple girls he had met only a few days ago. He smiled and said hey to his favorite professor before he continued on to his class. His first class of the morning was Chemistry. Good, he would be able to get the assignment out of the way. He only hoped they weren't assigned partners for the next one. He was the type of person who normally worked alone. Hurrying into the building, the first bell rang signaling that class would begin is five minutes. He walked towards the Chemistry room, careful to avoid the wind and fire students lingering around in the hallway before slipping into the classroom and taking his seat at the side of the room. Pulling his text books out, he placed them in front of him along with his typed, double spaced, eight page paper. It was something he and the teacher had worked out to see if he truly needed to be in the this class. The syllabus made it seem way too easy for his liking. Sitting back, he waited for the teacher to enter.
Minutes passed and still, no one arrived. Marcus pulled his hood up and over his head, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair. He yawned softly as he watched a fire student enter the room. He glanced around and Marcus would have thought to pay him no mind, until he locked eyes with him and the guy walked straight for him. Tensing up slightly, Marcus tried to rack his brain as to why a fire student would approach him. He hadn't said or done anything, so hopefully this was not out of anger. The kid sat next to him and gave a small smile before speaking. It was a short question but friendly enough he supposed. He didn't want to seem too much like a jerk so he thought it best to reply. "Uh, yeah, it is. Your Joshua?" he asked, hoping it sounded friendly enough. "Teacher is late as usual. I think someone said he was talking to another professor near the courtyard or something so I am going to bet it will be another ten minutes before class." With that out, Marcus looked away and to his text book in front of him, hoping just get this class over with. Today had already started out weird enough.

Well, he remembers my name, thought Joshua, surprised and not sure whether this was a good sign or not. Some people knew his name simply because they were good about things like that and they were nice people that didn't like to snub someone. Those folks were usually the Earth elementals, but there were exceptions both in the element and out. He'd met unfriendly Earth elementals, though admittedly those were rare, and he'd also met decent people that weren't Earth elementals. Of course, maybe Josh was a little biased in his affection for the so-called 'soft' element. His girlfriend was an Earth kid and they'd been right kind to him during the war so it was almost as if Joshua had a natural inclination to label them as good people. That only went so far, however. Josh Dale wasn't a trusting guy and it wasn't often that you got a second chance with him. It took a long time for him to really warm up to a person--he might be pleasant, but actually make him like you? It cost some an arm and a leg. It had cost Nell the hefty price of saving his life before he'd concluded that maybe she was an alright person. However, Marcus had, as far as he could remember from the few times he'd seen him around, done him no wrong. All he knew about the guy was his name and his element, true, but where there was no good thing to cement the basis of a relationship (whether it be a friend or simply a friendly acquaintance) there was also nothing to make Joshua hate him. So he was a little confused by the way Marcus quickly averted his gaze after speaking.
Not that Josh was a pushy guy. He didn't get offended just because someone wouldn't look at him and he wasn't necessarily going to make any comment until it really started to bug him. See, Joshua was a secretive person. And secretive people could hardly go around prying into the lives and businesses of others unless they had perfectly good reason to ask questions--it made them rather hypocritical, and Joshua resented hypocrisy (though of course, like most people, he was not innocent of the occasional slip-up). "I'm Joshua," he confirmed with a nod. In respect of the fact that he'd asked Marcus a question and didn't want to cut him off when he was speaking, he had waited until the other guy had finished talking before he'd confirmed this. And now, in response to the other thing the fellow sophomore had said, Josh replied, "Hardly surprising about the professor." Shaking his head, it was obvious (though perhaps not to Marcus, seeing as the Earth elemental had turned his attention to the textbook) that he was in disapproval of the professor's actions. If he was ever late to this class he was expecting the same sort of reluctant patience this man's students had with him. Aforementioned, Josh wasn't fond of people that said they hated something and then turned around and did the exact thing they supposedly did not like. This guy could not spend his mornings chattering to whomever he liked (coworker or otherwise) and then expect his students to show up to detention when they happened to turn up late for some reason or another.
As this thought crossed his mind, Joshua said dryly, "I'll have a bone to pick with him. Nearly killed myself getting up here--I'd like to give him a nice, warm wake up call." Though the venom dripping from his words was sarcastic, it was not immediately evident that the threat was empty. Joshua wouldn't actually attack a professor and anyone that was close to him would understand that, but he also wasn't an easy guy to read. The reputation he had for violence coupled by his none-too-friendly tone made it sound like he might just attack someone for the simplest matter of contradicting themselves. It wasn't that he was happy about being woken up and rushed only to wait in the room for the professor to remember he had a damn lesson to teach. Hell, no. Unlike Marcus, Josh didn't have a roommate--he'd requested a single room for 'studying purposes'; although he really did need the peace and quiet for studying, he'd really just done it to get out of sharing his space with another person. He had grown up in a mansion with a bedroom the size of several of the small dorms. He was not used to the cramped space and had resented sharing it for his first four years at the Academy. Of course, unlike some of the students that boarded all year round, Josh was lucky in the sense he could go home if he wanted to. His parents' mansion was in the Hollow. But he couldn't go home now, so perhaps it was a good thing he roomed alone else he might just get into a bit of an argument with his roommate on a miserable morning such as this one.
[Ooh, Marcus takes Biology? That's Josh's major--they've probably got a few classes together Maybe the incident that freaked Marcus out happened in another one recently or something?]

The comment definitely took Marcus off guard. Normally, he wouldn't respond to a comment like that, especially from a water of earth student. Most of the time, they rarely meant what they said when it came to threats due to the fact that most of them were non-violent, just like Marcus himself. But Joshua's comment was one that Marcus was unsure of how to take. Did he really mean that he would cause him harm? The thought that he may have just heard a threat toward the teacher made him want to protest against him, but he also knew that that idea would not be one he would want to go through with. And yet, he couldn't quite understand what it was that kept him silent either. Wasn't it his job to stand up for anyone and everyone in trouble? Besides, that is what good people did after all. Only difference was that Josh was a fire kid and Marcus for one was not interested in confrontation with anyone who used fire. He remained silent for a moment and couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief as the teacher reappeared into the room. Glancing over at Josh, he remained calm before responding. "Well, looks like you won't have to after all..." He couldn't help but hope that his comment had been one of jest but he was still unsure. He decided not to think about it and instead, prepared himself for class.
The teacher called for the class to pull out their assignments from the night before and walked towards Marcus slowly. Marcus handed him his typed project along with the assignment and the professor smiled, nodding his way in approval. Marcus returned the smile and looked back to his text book to continue working. The professor continued on to collect the assignments and during this time, Marcus decided to speak. "So, what do you think of this class?" he asked, trying to make small talk. He was terrible at it but at least it wasn't a girl he was speaking to or this conversation would be a lot harder than it needed to be. He knew that Joshua and him had never really had a chance to speak and not that he minded much, but if he would be sitting next to him the whole class period, silence would be too awkward for him. He waited patiently for a reply, looking from Josh, to his book, and then back again.
OOC: AHHHH, short. >.< Oh well. And yeah, they do have the same major. I think that is a good idea. Maybe the incident happened a few days before and he is just trying to be nice to Josh even though he is unnerved by his presence.

[That would work out great ]
Glancing over his shoulder in mild interest when Marcus let slip the comment, Joshua nodded a little and turned his attention to his own desk, though he was not completely unaware of Marcus' presence. He just wasn't the type that enjoyed being bitched at for not paying enough attention during a lecture. Josh was a good student and it was practically a great offence for anyone to suggest otherwise (in his mind, at least) but that didn't mean he could get away with the sort of classroom misdemeanours. When the professor called for them to take out their assignments, Joshua procured from his bag the carefully written and edited assignment that he had put the finishing touches on a night or two ago. He had always been neat and punctual with his work--it wasn't only a mark of his desire to get good grades, but due to the fact that he did not have a large network of friends. Less friends meant less pruning of relationships. He spent as much of his free time as possible with Nell, then Harlow, then divided up the rest of that time with the friends he was less close to. It didn't mean he was a bad friend, just a busy one. In fact, Josh was a pretty decent friend to have. He passed his assignment to the professor and returned the slight smile, then cast his gray gaze toward Marcus when the other boy spoke. He was a little surprised by the small talk, but not unwilling to return it. Shrugging, he said in a neutral tone, "It's part of my major. I take it because I have to, but it's not so bad." Honestly, if you managed to find a class that Joshua detested, you'd be in luck. The only things he'd ever really hated were things like physical education--you didn't learn anything there that he wanted to know, so he was uninterested. Chemistry, though... that he could deal with. "What about you?" he asked, figuring it was only polite conversational etiquette to return the inquiry.
Perhaps it was because he was distracted by the conversation that he'd had with his fellow professor, or perhaps he was just trying to sort out what he was going to do with the rest of the lesson, but the professor didn't immediately address his gathered pupils. Like Marcus, Joshua decided that it was better to fill the silence with words than to just sit here waiting for their professor to get his shit together. Glancing over at the Earth elemental and speaking in a quiet voice that was nevertheless easily heard to those nearby, he said, "Looks like we might get out of this one easy. I doubt he's got the time to set a load of work." That was the one clear advantage to a teacher being late--of course, Joshua had also seen them turn around and just assign the readings for homework and the essay along with it, actually making it the bane of a classes existence. Though Josh didn't mind work, for it kept him busy, he had enough of it with a double major that he wasn't fond of receiving more than was necessary. "Ever had him before? He's a new one to me; just got him when the semester switched." Sometimes the Academy professors taught several subjects, usually within a single major, and if you could glean a professor's habit from one class you were already prepared for it in the next. But Josh was inexperienced with this man, so he wondered if Marcus was the same. His curiosity was innocent enough--he had no reason to dislike the Earth elemental, but perhaps his overall unfriendly attitude (the way he usually carried himself when he was alone) was off-putting? He never knew how people would react to him, mainly because he was not too good with people.

Marcus did his best to give off an interested expression but he wasn't to be honest. Joshua was nice, he would give him that. But the whole fire thing didn't sit well with him. Besides, was the guy just making small talk because he had no choice but to sit next to him in class, or would he have done it in another situation? Something told Marcus that it was the first but he did not want to jump to conclusions. It just was not like him. Nodding his head, he listened at Josh spoke before replying. "I take Chemistry to help with my other major which is Biology. I was going to take Astronomy but I couldn't squeeze it in this term so maybe next, who knows. I am a double major so a minor at the moment might just kill me..." he said softly, hoping he hadn't been rambling too much.
Astronomy had always been something that interested Marcus. Ever since he was young, he had wanted to see the stars. Earth bending had only increased his curiosity as he began to wonder just what kind of elements the stars and planets were made off. Of course, they seemed to be solid but who really knew that for sure? After all, only a few planets had been seen up close and personal and it was no like humans were able to touch down safely. He knew that his dream to find out the truth wouldn't start with him but it didn't keep him form learning all he can about it.
The conversation about the teacher had come up yet again and Marcus couldn't help but wonder if this would be a reoccurring topic. Normally, one spoke of something and then dropped the subject. Obviously, Joshua had something against the teachers. He sighed, pulling his hood higher over his head before looking back to Josh. "Honestly, I have only seen him once and he was subbing for another class of mine. Guy gave me a 'D' on an assignment due to the misspelling of the word 'algorithm'. Personally, he is a chump but I deal with him so I can pass the class." He knew it was a little rude of him to say something so harsh about the man but it was true. He only tolerated him for school purposes. Outside of that, he was just another boring professor to steer clear of.

Joshua was slightly confused by what Marcus meant--was he taking Chemistry as an actual major, or just as a single class to assist the major he already had? However, the Fire graduate was not the type to get too in depth with conversations. He didn't ask things that seemed too intrusive and he didn't want to get into the delicacies of why the other guy was in certain classes right now. In actuality, he was just making conversation because he was bored and didn't want to spend ten minutes examining the wood of the desk as he waited for the professor to pull his shit together and start the lecture or lesson or whatever this was going to turn out to be. "I'm only taking this one class for Chemistry," he said. "I'm a Biology major, too." Like Marcus, Joshua also had a double major. However, his secondary interest was History. He did not take a double major that complimented the first one. It probably would have been a better idea to find a subject that would aid him in his future career as a doctor, but Joshua had not wanted to drop his beloved History. It had been his favourite subject since middle school and he wouldn't have felt right giving it up just because his life was going down a different path. He didn't want to be a historian and he didn't actually plan on using it for anything, but he did not regret taking on the mass of extra work. For History didn't feel like work to him. He enjoyed it, so it was more like studying something on his own time rather than studying because he had to.
Joshua felt a spark of anger as the Earth elemental sighed, almost like he wanted to discontinue conversation. Normally Joshua would not have cared, seeing as he wasn't the most sociable person in the room by far, but Marcus had spoke to him first (after the initial query, at least). Josh was just being polite and making conversation since he had assumed that the Earth graduate wanted to pass the time. "Is making conversation with me an effort?" he asked, with a hint of irritated sarcasm. He could be perfectly pleasant enough if he had to be but this was just something else. He didn't see what the fuck it was that he'd done to make the other boy act like it was incredibly difficult to keep talking. Joshua could have said more and went into detail about why he'd bothered to open his mouth around the other sophomore but that wasn't in his personality. Josh was not long winded and he usually didn't talk more than he had to. He'd decided to give Marcus the benefit of the doubt and act friendly around him, and this was how it worked out? "By all means, sit in silence," he said icily, rolling his eyes as he turned his attention back to his own work. "I couldn't care less."

The question of classes was something Marcus wasn't used. I guess, by his appearance, everyone saw him as a slacker or at least someone more focused on his generals than anything else. He was kind of glad someone asked him instead of assuming. Finding out that Joshua was a Bio major definitely took him off guard as well but he was impressed. "Really? Wow, nice. You have just one major or two?" he asked, now realizing they had more in common with each other than he had thought before. But just as he began to think that, Joshua asked him a new question. If Marcus had been easy to anger, he would have already chewed off Josh's head for being rude like that. Really? Him having to force conversation with him? Are you kidding? Taking a breath before responding, Marcus spoke. His tone was soft, not one that said he wanted trouble, but one that definitely said that he was not up for being accused of anything.
"Look. I am not making an 'effort' to talk to you. You just don't seem like you really want to be here so I figured why act like I wanted you here. I don't exactly speak to Fire students that often if you haven't noticed." he said, a little ruder then it meant to come out. He wasn't trying to be directly disrespectful, but how else was he supposed to act. It was true, Fire kids never spoke to him and when they did, it was was never to ask for a favor or to hang out. It was to cause trouble, give a direct order, or to speak out on something they disliked about him. Uncomfortable with the situation now, he sighed and leaned back, crossing his arms and letting the silence linger for a couple minutes, watching the teacher fumble with his things. Would he start the damn lecture already? This was a bunch of shit. Going off on a limb, Marcus spoke again but this time, his eyes focused straight ahead. "To be honest, its kind of nice having someone talk to me. About school none the less." Glancing over at the guy, he looked at him and waited for his expression before looking away yet again. He knew that this entire class period would be awkward now. He really did not want confrontation over something so little. He hated fighting and arguments with a passion but he seemed to be getting into them more often nowadays. He began to wonder if maybe it was his fault. Had he changed in some way that caused others to dislike him? Staring at the desk, he could tell that he really hadn't been the same person he had been his Junior year. Loosing his brother had made him closed off, irate, and slightly cold when it came to certain people or situations. His issue was how to change all of that. How was he going to go back to the way he was? Friendly, open, happy? His eyes remained on teh table as he waited for either Josh or the teacher to speak first. Oh, this morning was definitely not going as planned. OOC: Notes: Sorry about the wait. I have a lot going on at home lately but I am going to reply as soon as I can. I may not reply the day you do, but I will get to it at least the next day okay?[/blockquote]

Well, Marcus certainly caught on quick. "Two," Joshua replied, then paused for a moment before adding, "The other one's History." It might have sounded odd that he took the two different majors on the other side of the spectrum. It also might have made it seem that he was making a bad decision by not choosing a double major that would amp up his chances of getting into medical school but Joshua was confident that he could get in with Biology and good grades alone. After all, his father had gotten in on only one major. He also had Patrick to help him out, the graduate acknowledged grudgingly. Joshua refused to have any 'referrals' from his father. He wanted the process to be honest and straight-edge. He was going to get into medical school because he could, not because his father could pull strings with his contacts and get him in. It could have been wise to take opportunities like this as they presented themselves to him but Joshua was stubborn. Not like he had much of a choice now, given that he was fighting with his father and likely would never speak to the man again. "Is Chemistry a major for you or just a single class?" He was genuinely curious now, not really wanting to get too involved with personal questions but also finding himself intrigued. Talk of school and studying was always something that he found easier than discussing his personal life and choices. He was good in school, he knew he was good. He didn't have to doubt himself as much, so he found talking about it less stressful.
However, as Marcus replied to him in a less than friendly manner, the Fire graduate's gray eyes narrowed dangerously. Where his hand lay relaxed across the desk his fingers started to curl and he drew a breath. Keep your temper, he cautioned himself. He was trying not to flip out over the small things now, knowing that he'd never be able to hold down a job if he went off on others for the simplest of reasons, but it was not easy. Joshua would not accept professional help for his anger issues and so they were much harder to overcome on his own. He did manage to resist snapping at him, but only just. "Who are you to judge whether I want to be here or not?" he challenged, his voice as quiet as it usually was but now carrying a jagged edge. The reason Fire elementals were regarded as so dangerous was coming out in him now. He found it hard to suppress things like this whereas he knew that someone like Nell wouldn't be bothered by Marcus in the least--or at least, he assumed as much, because she was such a genuine person. How does she do it? he wondered with frustration. "If I didn't want to be in class I'd have just skipped it and if you're talking about this desk--" He whacked it instinctively with his hand, causing several people to jump and the professor to look round for a moment before going back to what he was doing, "--I really don't care that I have to sit beside you. But if you've got a problem with it, maybe you should have complained earlier."
He did, however, laugh bitterly as he recalled the last bit of what Marcus had said about Fire elementals. "Yeah, neither do I," he said sharply. There was no trace of humour behind either the laugh or the words. He'd once been the leader of the Fire elementals and now most of them hated his guts. He didn't make a habit of talking to them any more than Marcus did. At least this guy didn't have to be stuck in a dormitory with them a lot of the time. But despite the very bitter chuckle he didn't find it funny in the least. "Then maybe you shouldn't judge people that make a point to be polite," he pointed out dryly. He didn't mind talking to Earth elementals but if they were going to treat him like some sort of bad egg just because he was classed with the Fire sort then he'd stop bothering. He had never talked to Marcus during the war and wondered whether the college student even remembered that Joshua had been one of the ones to take their side, not his own. Josh didn't bother pointing this out. He was sick of talking about the war--it was months behind them and he didn't care to bring it up again.
[That's fine xD Sorry that Josh is so irritable, he's just... -sighs- He's such an angry character o.o]
