=- = - =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = It was a perfect day for what Tyson would describe as ‘pointless but necessary activities.’ He found himself sitting in a coffee shop with his favourite cappuccino and newspaper segment. His eyes drifted lazily across the page in front of his face, pausing every now and then to locate his coffee cup before taking a small sip and going back to his reading. The particular section he was browsing over was the motoring section, specifically the new Nissan GTR Proto. At heart Tyson was quite the petrol head, he liked the fundamental workings of the internal combustion engine and not to mention the styling of sports cars. He knew it was a fanatical obsession of sorts as he could only dream of being able to drive such things but he liked having some sort of dream to keep himself motivated through his education.
He took another sip of his coffee; the strong taste was just what his half functioning brain needed as it slowly began to sharpen up. What started as mindless drawl spread across an A3 page turned into coherent sentences and opinions that Tyson soaked up as he made his way down the page. He then paused at an article relating to a new government legislation act back in the UK. The newspaper was mocking MP’s who had passed a bill that could have drivers who accumulate speeding tickets end up in jail. He read on to find that it would only take 3 speeding tickets to end up in the slammer. Tyson couldn’t help but chuckle as the article ended on the more lighter tone of how in the state of California, a car was stopped for doing a whopping two hundred and fifty miles an hour on a road with a speed limit of just thirty. The driver was only given a warning and a $500 fine, a trivial punishment when compared to its transatlantic counterpart.
Tyson glanced out the window to his right, although his view was slightly obstructed by the cafe logo he could still see the street outside. Passersby shuffled past as the all attempted to get to their destinations either as fast as possible or as slow as possible. Some people almost seemed determined to stop others from getting past. The most notable being a mother pushing a pram down the street with a businessman franticly trying to jump past whilst yelling at someone on his cell phone. Tyson couldn’t help but let out a small sigh of relaxation as he felt a slight smugness of not being burdened with anything too demanding today, merely a science paper and a mathematical formula sat between him and total freedom.
He sighed as he pushed the thought of work from his mind. He had already allocated time for that later on in the day; the morning was his relaxation period. Although, all things considered, he found it hard to relax. A new bartender had started at Blackjack, pretty working on a lot of the same shifts as him. It wasn’t the fact that he had less space behind the bar that annoyed him, it was the girls name. Being a Thunder elemental, the name of an Earth elemental had been tossed around after the fiasco with the murder of his elements ‘leader’ and the similarities were hard to ignore. Simply by the use of the word ‘similarities’, he had shown himself that he wasn’t leaning towards the conclusion that she was indeed responsible, which was rather unusual for Tyson as he tended to be rather judgemental. He closed his eyes tight and reopened them as he turned his newspaper to the last page of the motoring section. The action helped clear his mind. He grabbed his coffee and started reading about Lamborghinis new prototype. =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Notes: Around 11am on a Saturday :3

the small silver mini car moved easily down the roads and during moments where excitement of having timmies in her stomach rose, harlow found herself pushing down on the gas pedal. it was a bad habit, her stomach tied to her foot, but it got her to tim hortons in a timely matter, and always in one piece. for a girl, harlow was oddly attached to her vehicle, even going so far as to name it. when she had first laid eyes on the mini series, despite the fact that it was an european model and would cost an arm and a leg to repair, she had to get one. when she had finally got the arm within her grasp, harlow appeared like a only child getting a dog as a friend. yes, she was that excited. since that lovely day that she was united with her dear lily, the car, not a flower, harlow had never felt more free and independent. there was something all to satisfying with buying your own car with your own money, no reliance on parents.
as tim hortons came into view and harlow noticed another car in her spot, she frowned. although it was not a reserved place for her, harlow technically believed it was. after all, name another person in canada that went to tim hortons as much as her. grumbling and parking next to the car in her spot, harlow sat in lily for a few moments, like she always seemed to do before going into tim hortons. it was generally time used to calm herself before meeting her brother because somehow the topic of their parents came about and harlow needed to be calm to not break out in tears in public. reminding herself that this was not needed today, however, took her a moment to process before she excited her car. the air was chilly and autumn was clearly coming closer and closer with each day. taking a deep breath in, the smell of autumn leaves and coffee mixed together, oddly making a good combination.
entering tim hortons, one of the ladies at the register smiled at her, already typing in her order. after all, she was a regular by now. reaching the counter, the lady nodded. "small iced capp made with half white milk, half cream and an everything bagel with herb and garlic cream cheese?" harlow asked, just to make sure the order was right and the lady laughed, saying she would not punch in anything else for harlow. laughing along, harlow waited patiently for her order, one of the few things she could wait patiently for, and glanced around the restaurant. as her eyes fell on a man sitting off to the side, reading a newspaper, he seemed familiar. with her order arriving, her thoughts were interrupted and harlow said thank you before taking the iced capp quickly with a sip.
instead of finding her own table, like harlow generally did, she walked toward the man sitting at the table, placing her iced capp and bagel down at the table, across from him. moving closer to the newspaper, harlow peered at the part of his face that she could see, coming off as a complete creeper in the process. with a content smile, she sat down without any question of if she was even welcomed. "i've seen you before." she announced, as if she expected him to know her as well. unwrapping her bagel, she took a bite out of if, followed by another sip of her iced capp. "i figure, since i've seen you, i might as well sit with you." she stated, logic only harlow could understand at the best of times. with a bright smile, she seemed content.
"the name is harlow." these dry bones cry for you |

=- = - =- =- =- =- =- =- =- =- = Why did Tyson take physics? It was a question everyone seemed to ask him and himself on many occasions because of how he could easily deft the laws set out by Maxwell, Tesla and Plank regarding electromagnetism simply be existing. Nowhere in physics does it state that organic matter can generate electricity on the scale that the thunder elementals can. People have hypothesised that it’s to do with increased brain activity, neurons in the brain giving off more electricity than they normally would but Tyson didn’t by it as it wouldn’t help explain how the other elementals do what they do. He refused to put it down to ‘magic’ either because magic is a words used to describe something you don’t understand and don’t want to find a reason for, but that was why Tyson was studying physics, because he didn’t want to believe all the elemental control was magic.
The thought crossed his mind as she checked his watch, pondering how much time he had left before he would have to drag himself down to the library to finish off his assignments for Monday. He tried not to think about the mathematics he would be using as it would only serve to undo the work done by his cappuccino by sending him to sleep! He reached the end of the motoring section which lead onto the business section. He only ever read the headlines rather than the articles themselves in the section. He liked to know if a certain company was going to go bust or similarly grand scale news stories. This was probably why he always had the news channel on in his apartment whenever he was working. Partly because he can’t work in silence but also because he liked to keep up with what was happening in the world.
He hadn’t noticed initially, but as he went to take another sip of his coffee he saw a pair of eyes peering over the page in front of him. He stopped, somewhat intrigued, but displaying a look of confusion as he lowered the newspaper to get a better look at the young woman who had now seated herself opposite him. She announced that she had seen him before, a statement, in Tyson’s opinion; lead him to believe that she was also a student at academy. But that raised the question of what element? How strongly did she follow the elemental alliances? Tyson defiantly overlooked them on occasion but if someone was going to turn hostile just because they can throw fire bolts whilst he can cast lightning, Tyson found it hard not to respond in kind.
”I guess I make better company than a brick wall then?” He said in jest as she justified why she was sitting with him and rather than at one of the many free tables in the cafe. ”I’d hope you agree with me on that, otherwise it would be a massive blow to my ego if you thought I was less engaging than a wall!” He chuckled slightly as he straightened up in his seat, adopting a more polite position rather than slouching as he was reading the paper. ”I take it then, you’re also a student at the academy?” Tyson mused, taking a sip of his coffee as he maintained eye contact with his new companion. It wasn’t such a stretch of the imagination to think so, the majority of people around his age in this town were elementals at the academy, would this girl be the exception to the rule?
“Tyson, friends call me Tai.”
