[We can say they're already friends/know one another if you'd like xD]
Ashton didn't like to feel like a coward, but sometimes it was a lot easier to hide out in the safety of the dormitories when you were studying than to chance going up to the library. It meant that he had to make do with whatever textbooks he had on him or whatever he could find on the internet, and the latter only applied if there was a friend around who owned a laptop. He'd tried to convince his father to get him a computer for school but the man insisted that his son just put up with waiting his turn and using the Academy computers, not realising that the ninth graders liked to invade the library and steal said computer time to play games or go on sites like Facebook. Sometimes you could convince the old librarian that the ninth graders really were being brats, but other times she thought you were being lazy and ordered you to just go read a book and find your information there instead. It wasn't that Ash hated reading or anything, he just wasn't that great at finding book-learned knowledge. The internet was much more helpful with its search engines.
Unfortunately, there was no handy-dandy friend-with-a-laptop around today. He was stuck sitting in the common room and staring at his notes until the black pencil marks seemed like they were blurring together, the tired Earth leader letting out a groan as he tried to make sense of what he'd written. His scrawl was neat enough, but sometimes he spaced out in class and sort of forgot what all of his notes pertained to. I probably should have given it a title, he acknowledged to himself, sighing. He was starting to get a headache from all of this forced concentration, yet the paper was due tomorrow and he didn't have a single word of it done. I'm the leader, stand-in or not, he thought to himself. If my grades slip I'll get so much hell for it! He'd never been the smartest student in the school, but he prided himself on at least slightly above average marks. His parents had raised him well, so he wasn't exactly a slacker. It was just hard for him to concentrate on his homework when he had so many other things on his mind.
Like the war.
"That's it, I'm not getting anything done," he huffed aloud to himself, glad that there was no one else in the room to hear as he knew he might sound slightly insane. He didn't make a habit of talking to himself, he was just frustrated and about ready to tear the sheet into a thousand tiny pieces. Packing it away into his bag, he went back into the joint common room of the Earth dormitories and sat down on the couch. It was supposed to be a nice April day outside with minimal snow and a nice filtered sunlight after the recent rain, but he couldn't even go outside to enjoy it without being attacked by some angry Fire student. This war was such a nightmare. He wondered how Nell was doing and worried about her health and even her sanity. It couldn't be very comforting when everyone was trying to kill you. He hadn't spoke to her in a while.

Leif just groaned, boredom was a common thing for him but it was easily healed by playing around on his laptop - his stepfather's actually, but not like he could retrieve the stolen device now - but Leif was left with nothing to do, his dashboard on tumblr was un-updated, and his computer games had proved themselves to be boring - Leif owned no twitter or facebook, he found them a waste of time - so rolling over onto his back, the slim teen stared up at the ceiling and groaned, even with the power of internet he was left with nothing, his homework finished hours before and all books finished, required to go to the library once he got off his butt and decided to grace the librarian with his presence. The older lady liked him, he was an avid for the books and often helped her out if it meant he could stay there later, he also never hassled her, it had lead to a mutual thing, Leif was amazed that he was able to find an acquaintance int he snooty librarian but of course, he was a weirdo.
Finally, Leif gave up on his laziness and scooped the books into his messenger bag before placing his laptop in the little holder at the back of the bag, he never left without it or his ipod, which was tucked away nicely in his black skinny jeans. Quickly looking in the mirror he fixed his hair and tried a smile on his lips, he found himself looking acceptable enough to leave after a bit of editing - makeup - and descended from his dorm, gallivanting past others - they gave him odd looks, something he registered - and came to a slow stop at the common room, he hated it when other observed him, it made him feel insecure - not that he already wasn't feeling so - and he didn't need any more of that, stepping inside, Leif's eyes fell on someone, his good ol' stand in leader, pushing the upset thoughts to the back of his mind he moved towards Ashton, creeping up on the guy who was his closet thing to a friend.
When it came to friends, Leif didn't find himself really having any, he didn't let people in enough - in the sense of personal things - for them to be so, but he liked his stand in leader and he let him close enough, Leif would like to count him as a friend but he wasn't sure if the feeling was mutual. As he moved closer, he saw all the notes scattered on the desk, Ashton was doing work? Leif wanted to laugh, but that would give him away, he knew Ashton could be somewhat bad at his work, but his grades were above average last Leif heard, so the black haired smartass couldn't say anything, but he knew that Ashton was probably at a loss without his computer, unless those notes were for something else and Leif had perceived this whole event wrongly - which he doubted - but that was to be discovered after his prank. Only soon after the thoughts had left him, he saw Ashton pack away the notes and say something to himself before sitting back onto the couch, he really hoped he hadn't been spotted, he really did. Continuing his creeping up on Ashton, he lightly placed his bag on the floor in case Ashton hit him in surprise - you can never be to sure - grabbing Ashton roughly and pulling him back a bit, giving a small 'rawr' for effect. A real smile graced his lips as he awaited a reaction, before he yelled out;
"Hey Ashes!"

Ashton normally wasn't the type that would freak out and hit someone when they started him, no. Ash was a pretty sweet and pacifistic guy that might shriek a bit in alarm and/or curse in surprise, but he'd never really been pushed into attacking another person before. He was too kind for that. Ever since the war, however, things had changed. He'd nearly hurt Lissa with an earthquake in the hallway, he'd almost strangled a poor water student with a vine the other day when the boy had scared him, and just now when his friend snuck up from behind and grabbed him Ashton nearly lost it. Vines shot out from the ground and created a web-like barrier between them, Ashton nearly falling off the couch as he scrambled to his feet and readied himself to attack. It was then that he realised that this was a fellow Earth student and not only that, but one of his friends.
Heart hammering in his chest, Ashton worked on slowing down his breaths as the vines slowly untangled themselves and shrank back into the earthen floor of the dormitory like children being scolded. "Geez, Leif, I could have hurt you," he said with a bit of a frown. He wasn't being sharp or anything, he sounded more apologetic. Ash could never be cruel to his friends, even if he was the Earth leader and so had every right to bitch heavily about having been attacked. "This war's got on on edge, it's real hard to just assume that an Earth student's the only thing we'll find down here any more." He wouldn't put it past someone to try and sneak in. They'd had a few minor break-ins before (it was possible to break into all the dormitories, it was just very difficult) but in the event of a war it just made everything that more serious and frightening. He didn't want to take the fun out of the joke for his friend he just couldn't laugh about something like this at the moment, unfortunately.
After calming down a little, Ashton sank down on the couch and exhaled. His heart was still pounding and he could hear the blood rushing in his ears from the scare, but he didn't want to dwell on this for too much. Giving a weak sort of smile, he asked, "Not in the library today, huh?" Was Leif having similar problems with everyone picking on him and the like? Ash wouldn't really be surprised. The Fire students were ruthless and the Thunder students vindictive. "I just wish this stupid war would end so everything can go back to being normal." He wasn't whining or anything, but he was seriously sick of the whole war business. Being leader on top of that meant that his schedule was especially strainer with trying to make sure everyone was okay.

Ok, so Leif probably should've guessed that with the war everyone would be on edge, but even he had moments of airheadness - or forgetfulness - and forget, leading towards Ashton's quite violent reaction to his scare, vines shot up like a barrier in-between the two and shoved Leif back, and despite the seriousness of the situation, he laughed, his voice a trill as the vines untangled and came apart, slipping back into the ground like when someone shied away from you. Leif pushed himself off the ground, his long legs shaking unsteadily as he stood, it was from the adrenaline of being shoved backwards, it left his body shaking a little.
As Ashton - or Ashes as he called him, which if you think about for an earth student it was a particularly cruel name - scolded him a bit - though there was no cruelty in his voice, Leif still felt scolded - Leif understood though, that with this war everyone was on edge, he couldn't feel necessarily hurt, but he did feel guilty, maybe the joke was misplaced in time, but he couldn't do anything about it now, but apologize to his closet friend - acquaintance - and hope that he wasn't angry. "Sorry about that Ashes, didn't mean much by it, the war sorta slipped my mind." The fun part of the little prank had died, drowned by the guilt and by the fear that internally Ashton was berating him.
When Ashton finally calmed himself and sat on the couch, Leif walked up and placing his hand on the back of the couch, beside Ashton's head before swinging his long legs - high enough to narrowly miss Ashton's head - and plopped down beside the younger boy - not exactly attitude wise though - leaning against him a bit. His eyes caught on Ashton weak smile and he gave a small pout, the guilt only worsened and he leaned away, sitting straight up and away from Ashton now, he didn't really want Ashton to see how upset he was but, it was inevitable. "I was actually gonna go until I saw you," Leif's little pout turned into one of his famous half-smiles, "is it really ever normal here?" Leif joked into a sorta sad voice, all Leif really wanted was some peace was that so hard? But as a student of this school he couldn't really expect much more.
"How's the war treating you?" Stupid question but it was relevant enough, it was really just a question that showed Leif was worried about him, he was important to Leif, he didn't want Ashton hurt.

Leif seemed upset by Ashton's reaction, and of course Ash immediately felt awful for being so blunt. He had every right to react in such a way or worse because of the intensity of the war, and yet the selfless personality of the boy still felt more sorry for Leif than he did himself. His heart was pounding with the residual adrenaline, but Ashton still managed to reply, "I know you didn't mean anything by it, Leif, don't worry." His tone was reassuring and as soft as it usually was, though it was also laced with some sort of guilt. His friend had tried to play a joke on him and he'd nearly attacked him as a response. Leif had only laughed at the attack and Ashton supposed he should be getting offended because of that, but it just wasn't in the nature of the happy-go-lucky Earth boy to start bitching because you laughed at him. He tended to just feel awkward as he was being laughed at and then shrug it off. Always make everyone else happy, never himself.
Ashton sighed--Leif really did have a point. "Nah, I guess it's not." It was a little sad that they didn't get to just have a normal high-school experience like everyone else on the planet. There was still as much drama and heartache here as there was at your average teenage gathering place, except at the Academy stealing someone's boyfriend got your face burned off as opposed to a bitchfest of yelling. Gender didn't affect power like it did muscles and toughness, so the girls were every bit as ferocious as the guys when it came down to it. It wasn't to say that no one ever got into fist fights, for they did, it was just a lot less common and usually ended up in some show of elemental prowess at the end. "It's just even worse than usual with everyone gunning for Nell's execution," he said, cringing at the word. Nell was a really good friend of his and he hated the idea that everyone wanted her dead. Or at least half of the school wanted it, which was still pretty bad. "Do you know her, Leif?" He was speaking about a friendly knowledge of the girl--everyone knew who she was by now. Everyone. But not everyone was her friend, and so Ashton wondered.
The question made him cringe a little, but he shrugged it off and tried not to appear too affected. "No better or worse than it's treating anyone else," he lied, deflecting. It was a lie because his status as an elemental leader--although it was far from permanent--meant that he had a constant target on his back. "What about you?" he returned, not only because it was polite to ask but because the boy was generally concerned about Leif and Leif's well-being. "No one's giving you too much trouble, are they? Because I'll back you up if I need to. That's what friends do." He smiled easily at the other boy. He considered him a friend, and he was completely unaware that Leif didn't quite share these feelings.

Guilt coursed through Leif, he made Ashton feel guilty? Leif had to fight to keep the frown off his face and the guilt from his eyes, he never meant to make him feel bad, worry and insecurity coursed through Leif's head while he remained ever so calm facially, on the outside he looked calm and unfazed as usual but internally he was freaking out. This was a common thing with Leif but never with someone so close to letting in, Leif mentally hit himself for showing that he felt guilt over what had happened and upsetting Ashton. Leif knew this was going to be a never ending circle of guilt so he had to let Ashton know it was fine and that he was ok and not upset, hopefully Ashton's guilt would go away, because Leif's wasn't. "It's nothing to worry about Ashes." Leif reassured, attempting to kept the guilt and fear from his voice, but unknowingly some of it leaked through, Leif was never really good at shrouding his emotions.
Of course Leif had a point, their school was totally off from the generally norm of teenage heartbreak, angst, drugs and pregnancy, sometimes, Leif really wished it was like that. Now especially with this war, in a real school this would be a plain old fight but here, it was an actual war, with people who had powers, it was hard to deal at times but Leif learned to deal, anyways, he guessed being at a normal school would've sucked anyways. "Of course I do!" Leif's voice reached a higher octave as he attempted to annoy the fellow earth student, he could tell that the boy's mind was elsewhere and he was in a state of some sort but really he just wanted to help him in any way possible. "Nell? Not exactly, I mean I've heard of her, seen her, but never really interacted... But even so, I doubt she deserves this." He didn't know why the war started but all he knew was that this girl probably didn't deserve, no matter what she did, he felt bad for her and hoped that in the end she would be ok and that she was fairing well currently.
The cringe made him wish he had never asked, a chill shot throw him as he held the frown from his lips, why did he always do this to Ashton, he felt horrible, he never thought his question would stir that much with Ashton, Leif pressed his lips into a fine line while attempting to appear calm outwardly, inwardly well, he was a mess - as always - sighing a bit he listened to the blatant lie Ashton attempted to feed him, he knew that even though he was a stand-in, he was a pretty big target in the war, it just made Leif's worry for his almost friend even more than was possible before. "Liar... Of course it's bad on you, your the leader," Leif said softly, smiling gently, he wanted Ashton to know - even though he wasn't the best at helping - he was there for him, the younger boy had a lot of troubles on his hands and he wanted to help.
Friends.... Right.. The word made Leif nervous and he held back a small cringe, were they friends? Ashton was really the closest thing he had to one but still, was Ashton that close to him? He knew Ashton viewed the theory of friends differently, so he had to think about that one in more detail... Later, now he had to reassure Ashton that nothing was happening, a lie, but no need to worry the ever so busy leader, he had enough issues. "I'm fine, nothing happened to me recently." He kept his voice even and smiled brightly at him. Lies were ok someitmes... Right?

Ashton nodded--it made sense that Leif and Nell were not acquainted quite yet. Even though Nell was incredibly friendly (or at least had been to Ashton, and apparently that scary as hell Fire student, too) that didn't mean that she had to be friends with absolutely every one of the Earth students. Especially not Leif, whom Ash was well aware didn't have a wide selection of close friends. Not that Ashton was one to judge Leif or anything like that. After all, Ashton was his friend. "She doesn't," the stand-in leader sighed, shaking his head. "No one deserves this. She's got half of the school out to kill her over something... so childish." Then the Earth student flinched--gosh, what if he made Leif think he was some soulless asshole that felt nothing akin to sympathy for the deceased Thunder leader?
"I'm not calling her death childish, Cynthia's, I mean," he said quickly to correct his mistake. "I just think it's a little extreme to blame someone for her apparent murder and then try to kill them in return. Matching violence with violence solves nothing." He ran a stressed hand through his hair and chuckled quietly. "Just ignore me," he suggested, knowing there was a good chance that he wasn't making sense. Ash tended to go off into incessant rambles that didn't compute with others. "I'm just being over-dramatic." And he wasn't, really, but he felt like he was.
Leif called him out for being a liar, and the Earth leader ducked his head as he was caught in his obvious lie. "Well they haven't done anything too extreme yet," he said lamely, knowing that Leif wasn't going to buy some cock and bull story about how they weren't targeting him at all. The Earth kids could be pretty naive sometimes but it wasn't like they were stupid, they usually ended up figuring shit out. In fact, perhaps their open and friendly natures meant they figured it out with even more ease than anyone else. "I think they've been more focused on Nell than me in this war." Usually the elemental leaders were the biggest targets in a fight because by defeating them you severely weakened the side you were against. But then again, they weren't usually out to get a single person. Wars were usually the result of an entire element being pushed to the extreme and just snapping, dragging their allies along with them in the process.
He had a feeling that Leif wouldn't tell him the truth even if his arm was hanging off, and so Ashton frowned and pondered this for a moment. "You're sure?" He'd noticed the wince, but rather than assuming it had to do with the fact that the other boy didn't consider him a friend, Ash merely thought that he was covering up for some sort of injury. "You're an Earth student and I'm supposed to be acting the leader, don't forget that," he pointed out. Rather than expressing authority, Ashton was suggesting he had more manpower to back him if he was hurt. Ashton never flaunted his temporary power. "I can help if something goes wrong."

Leif tugged on his hair and nodded slowly, he understood what Ashton meant, it was obvious Ashton was close with the girl and he understood the war a lot better than Leif did, but the way Ashton said it, it may have come off cold, but Leif knew his tone and knew the guy better so he didn't think so. So when Ashton attempted to correct himself, Leif just snickered a bit, he gave an understanding look to his - could he call him a friend? - acquaintance. "I get it Ashes, calm down. I know you meant nothing insensitive, but I get it. It's not going to help with anything, I mean, what if they succeed? Wouldn't you retaliate to that?" Leif gave his usual half smile to the boy, and patted him lightly, "I don't think you're over dramatic." He didn't find what he said over-dramatic or anything, he agreed with Ashton, it was silly. Matching a death with a death wasn't going to bring back Cynthia, and it wasn't going to make anything better by killing Nell. Ashton wasn't over-dramatizing anything, he was being smart and telling the truth.
He almost laughed as Ashton ducked his head, Leif was extremely naive in many things - never leaving your home for over five years wasn't the best way to help - but he was good with reading other people, and Ashton sadly wasn't the best at covering his emotions - as much as Leif had seen - or at least, he didn't try to hide them. "That makes sense... I mean, she is the target." Leif didn't mean to sound cold, but somehow it came off like that, she was the target so it made sense, if Ashton was lying than Leif couldn't tell, which meant he should retract his earlier statement. It took a couple of moments before Leif realized how cold his voice had sounded, and how he might of come off, maybe that's how Ashton had been earlier? "I mean, uh. Although you're the leader, the war was over Nell right? It makes sense." Leif hoped that he sounded less, cold, than earlier. "But I guess it's good that your not getting hurt as much?" His voice raised a few octaves as he smiled a bit, things had gained an awkwardness, at least for Leif.
"I understand Ashes, but you have more important things to be focused on." Leif mumbled the second half of the sentence more to himself, he didn't want to worry Ashton at all, he understood that, as leader- even as a stand in - Ashton was supposed to be there for the earth students but Nell - or any of the more attacked earth students - deserved his attention more than Leif did, he was barely getting the head of it.
Deciding to pull Ashton off the topic in case Ashton had heard what he said, he thought of any other topics... Dating? Most guys were interested in someone or something like that, and Ashton wasn't excluded so, why not find a lighter topic for Ashton to get away from the stress of the war? "Sooo... You found anyone you like Ashes?" He nudged him lightly and grinned, he hoped that would get Ashton into a better mood, things were so heavy now that maybe Ashton would be able to calm down a bit. Of course, Leif wouldn't be much into this conversation, he wasn't interested in any guy or girl of the moment - excluding some random boy he met in the library - but it wasn't like he could talk about that guy, he didn't know how open Ashton was to that, he'd find out later on and maybe talk about the guy, maybe.
Until then onto talking to Ashton about his love life.

Ashton winced at the mere thought--what if they succeed? "I don't even want to think of that," he said, shaking his head. He hated the idea of his friend being killed over this stupid war. Why did Leif have to bring up a terrible thought like that? It's not his fault, Ashton reminded himself patiently, knowing it wasn't fair to blame a friend who was actually probably trying to comfort him. Leif wasn't inferring that he wanted Nell dead, not at all, he was just stating a point. "I doubt we'd try to kill them if they... if it did happen." Earth students were not as vindictive and lethal as their Thunder foes. Violence solved nothing, retaliation solved nothing. Going back in the history of Academy wars, this was one of the more violent and dangerous wars they'd had recently. It didn't top some of the ones with massive bloodshed years ago, but did that really matter? Not to Ashton. The point was that it was barbaric no matter how high the body count went: one body was enough. One injury was enough. Perhaps he was naive to hope that problems could be solved without violence, but whatever the case, he didn't think their current 'plan' was working out very well.
His brows knit together when Leif spoke. "I didn't mean that I wanted her hurt instead of me," he said, frowning. In fact, he'd take a bullet for any one of his friends--Leif included. He probably should have calmed himself down and just shut his mouth before he gave Leif the wrong idea about the fact that this was upsetting him, but it truly was. The more Ashton concentrated on how everyone had shifted their focus to killing one of his friends, the more anxious Ashton Raleigh became. "I'd rather it was me," Ashton disagreed, shaking his head. Leif didn't know Nell--or at least he'd said he hadn't, and Ashton believed him--so he couldn't really know how innocent and pure the Earth female came across as. At least to Ashton. He remembered how nice she'd been to him and how adorable she'd behaved when they were building the snowman. He hadn't judged her naivete on such a common childhood activity and she hadn't judged his somewhat bashful attitude. "I'd rather I wasn't getting hurt at all. I'd rather no one was getting hurt." Despite Leif's attempts to talk him down from his concern, he now had the mindset of a friend and a leader: worry about everyone.
Why did Leif value himself with such low esteem? It bothered Ashton, but not in a negative sense. He just wished that his friend was a little more big on self-worth. "My friends are always just as important as everything else," Ashton said stubbornly. He wasn't saying it in a mean way or anything, just inferring that he wasn't going to ignore Leif whether there was a war going on or not. The question about romance successfully caught him off guard, however, surprising the boy and making his cheeks flush with colour. "I--what?" He hadn't expected that. He and Leif didn't normally talk about 'guy stuff' like this, so it had been completely out of left field for him. Still, he could roll with this to keep the conversation moving onto greener pastures. Deciding to be honest and yet still not reveal the identity of the mystery girl, he admitted, "Sure, there's someone I like. We get along great, but not much has happened yet." He wondered if Leif had anyone special, and if that had been the reason which he had brought it up. "Why... has someone caught your eye?" He grinned at him almost teasingly, mischievously.

The wince made Leif think that maybe what Leif said was a bit insensitive, he should've realized how Ashton would've reacted to something like that, but it hadn't been brought to mind, he sucked on his bottom lip, playing with his piercing, trying to think of a way to seem like less of an insensitive bastard. Leif shifted awkwardly before speaking, he was fumbling with the words in his mouth, he didn't know what to really say to his friend. "I know.. I think I worded it oddly..." An awkward laugh escaped his lips as he played with his hair, oh god, things just got even more awkward, this is why Leif avoided things like this, he said things wrong and upset him; he bet that if Ashton wasn't such a nice guy he would be yelling at him or something of the sort.
Shifting again, he bit his lip, once again he was the insensitive guy. This is why he had no friends, Leif bet after this even Ashton wouldn't want to be his acquaintance. "I didn't mean it like that." His voice was quiet and meek, he twiddled his thumbs like a child who had just been reprimanded he always took things to close to heart, and this was a perfect example. "I understand that.. I don't think anyone really wants to get hurt right now... And anyways, is there really proof of Nell committing the murder?" He tried to take this topic to a different approach, he didn't know Nell, but he knew one thing, earth students disliked violence, it was highly improbable that she would kill someone, let alone hurt someone. It seemed so far fetched to Leif, he could really believe it.
Leif shied away when he spoke, they were friends in Ashton's eyes? Leif bite his lip and shifted, damn, he was feeling very awkward right now, luckily for a different reason this time. "But aren't some friends more important than others?" Leif didn't quite get friends, he never really had ant being locked inside most of his young life and watching TV wasn't the best way to learn about so he was a bit... Inexperienced when it came to friendships, not to mention, he felt he didn't have any friends, just to add the icing on the cake.
A laugh slipped through his lips as Ashton was caught off guard, him and Ashton didn't really talk about guy stuff such as this, but Leif had needed a way to bring them to a more.... Friendly topic. He smiled at the light color that had risen to Ashton's cheeks, he poked at them and smirked; the answer he got was a bit disheartening, he didn't give away the mystery girl? Meanie. "Awe, Ashes won't tell his mystery girl's name?" Leif laughed, "I hope things go well with you and her." Leif's heart almost stopped when he mentioned his own crush though, what was he to say? 'I bumped into this guy at the library and ever since I've been unable to get him out of my head'? How cliched, that and well, he didn't know how accepting Ashton was.
Unable to lie, and unable to tell the truth, he decided to go for his favorite, the half-truth. "I bumped into the person at the library, and I don't know, I haven't been able to get them off my mind." Leif blushed as he told his cliched tale, but he really liked that boy, even though all they said was 'hi', love at first sight? Now, more like 'I have an amazing crush on you now' at first sight - Leif was certain that these inner monologues were some sign of insanity - he looked at Ashton to see the reaction of his tale.

Leif started in on the awkward laughter and the defensiveness, Ashton sighing and dragging a hand through his brown hair. How did he explain that he wasn't angry without making things worse? The other boy seemed to take everything very personally and this was something that Ash didn't understand--sure, he was a little stressed about the idea of Nell dying or something, but it wasn't like he was going to take this out on Leif and totally turn on him. Ashton wasn't like this, especially to his friends, even if Leif didn't realise that the Earth leader really did consider them friends. "Don't worry about it," he said. It seemed to be something that he was saying a lot. 'Don't worry about it,' 'Don't take it personally,' 'Don't concern yourself too much'. Ashton didn't like his friends fretting and worrying all over the place, especially not about things concerning his opinion. He wasn't going to cast Leif out because of a simple slip of the tongue.
He frowned when Leif asked after proof. "No," the Earth elemental said softly. "No, there isn't. Not that I know of." They apparently had their witness or whatever, but unless that person came forward and told their story themselves as well as provided some sort of additional evidence of the crime and Nell's guilt in it, Ashton would never be convinced. "The opposite, actually. Nell said she's got an alibi, and I believe her." He was perhaps a bit too quick to trust and accept the goodness in other people, but honestly, who would be stupid enough to think of someone like Nell as a murderer? He remembered when they'd met in that stuffy classroom, when Ashton was trying desperately to get his plant to flourish and Nell had merrily entered the room. It had dissolved to snowman building and general tomfoolery. He couldn't see her as evil. Could never see her as evil.
The next question Leif asked him, however, was quite concerning to Ashton. "More important? Why would any friend be more important?" He couldn't fathom the idea of placing some of his friends on a pedestal whilst leaving the others behind in the dust. He supposed that some friends might be closer to you than others--he knew Nell better than he knew Leif, after all, because Leif was very quiet and not as openly friendly as the Earth girl. But that didn't mean that Nell was any more or less important than his other friend, not at all. "I value everyone the same, Leif." He wasn't scolding or reprimanding, he was merely stating a fact about himself. He didn't put his friends in order of their importance. One life was still a life no matter whose it was. Especially when it came to murder and injury, he wanted them all to stay safe. He'd rather take a bullet himself than see his friends get hurt. That was just how Ashton was. Maybe Leif was different. Maybe he did do things like that. Ashton just... didn't.
The faintest hint of a smile brushed his lips as he shook his head. "Maybe once I know if things'll work out." He didn't like to fawn over girls and talk about how much he was interested in them only to have his hopes crushed a short time later. It just wasn't the way that Ashton worked, really. Apparently Leif's crush had spawned in the library, and it made him chuckle. "Why am I not surprised that you met your match in the land of literature, Leif?" His tone was gently teasing and friendly as ever. "Do you know their name, even?" His friend wasn't saying much about the mystery stranger and it was kind of confusing him.
He might have carried out the conversation for a little longer, but at that moment another one of the Earth students approached him with a worried expression. "Ashton... we need your help," the boy said, casting a glance at Leif before directing his attention back to the stand-in leader. "Something's going on outside." Though he didn't want to leave his friend hanging, Ash knew that his duties as a leader were forced before everything else during times of war. "Sorry," the Earth elemental said earnestly to his friend. "I'll see you around, though." He waved slightly before following after the younger student, worried about what would await him outside.
[OOC: Sorry to end--the war is over and I figure it makes sense to close this thread up. Do you want to make one last reply or should we leave it here?]
