Lucia had never really been fond of the dark.
When she was little, she had been locked in a dark closet for three days, after her mother had flown into another one of her rages. She didn’t remember what she had done - or if she had done anything at all - but she definitely remembered the darkness. The closet hadn’t been big enough for her to move about in. She remembered sitting there, curled in a ball on a bucket in the dark, crying and begging her mother to let her out. That she’d be a good girl, and wouldn’t ever get in trouble ever again. She had begged and pleaded for her mother to let her out until her voice was hoarse. In the end, it had been her twin who had broken the door in, furious.
That had been many years ago, but she never forgot it. For even now, she had a fear of small spaces, and hated being in the darkness.
There was always an exception to the rule, of course. Lucia loved spring weather, especially spring nights. The fresh air, the beautiful sky, it reminded her of Germany sometimes. It was this reason why she had decided to go around the campus at eleven o’clock at night, sneaking out of her dorm. Technically she probably shouldn’t have been here, but Lucia wasn’t one to adhere to rules she thought were dumb. After all, it wasn’t like she was going very far, just out on the campus. The blonde girl was lying on one of the hills, wearing her usual shorts and tank top, gazing up at the sky.
“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight….” Lucia mumbled the little nursery rhyme, frowning when she couldn’t remember the rest. Her parents hadn’t been the nursery rhyme folk, after all. She sighed, shrugging slightly. Oh well. Life would go on. Part of her wondered where Rosie was at this moment, if she was staring up at the sky too. Rosie had been the one to love Astronomy. Lucia narrowed her green eyes, trying to pinpoint the northern star like her twin had shown her once...

Brett lived for the dark. It comforted him more than the sun's brightness ever could. The trouble with light was that everything was just so plain and out there. With darkness came that mystery. That enigma that made everything just a little more interesting. It also gave that sense of anonymity that provided troublemakers with the ability to do whatever they pleased and avoid the consequences. But that wasn't what he wanted tonight. He needed more friends for something like that. It was wartime, so that was difficult at the moment. It really amazed him that the thunder kids were not nearly as united as any of the other groups, and yet somehow they were labeled as a hostile collective. It was frightening. The other groups probably associated them as just like them. United. But it really seemed to be every thunder for his or her self at this point.
Brett wasn't as cautious as normal anymore. He figured that if the enemies were to unite and kill him, they would, but if they were logical they'd go for someone more important. No one really knew Brett. He wouldn't be very missed. So there was no point in having his blood on someone else's hands, right? Recently he'd considered attacking other groups just for the hell of it. What was the point of this fighting when it was all picking on what had to be the weakest unit in the school? It was collective bullying, and he wouldn't stand for it much longer. Even if he'd definitely do the same thing were he one of the other elements. Regardless, this was a time where he actually wanted to think. He wasn't going to resolve this, but it would be interesting to see if he could create and electric offensive later. It just needed planning, something he sucked at.
He saw someone who he didn't recognize sitting on a hill once he started to walk around outside. It was past curfew. He really should have been all alone out here. Yet here this girl was, reciting some nursery rhyme. Deciding he'd get in as much trouble as she if he treated her as hostile, he decided to be friendly for the time and see where it got him. He sat next to her, turning and smirking. "Aren't you worried it's a little dangerous out here?" he asked in a hopefully nonthreatening tone. It was his childish curiosity at work now. Was this girl just brave, or did she not realize that being outside after hours during a war could get a little messy? Maybe she was like him - just stupid. Hopefully she wasn't looking for a fight, because Brett had never hit a girl and really didn't want to start any time soon.

Rosie and her couldn’t have been more different. Lucia was laid-back, relatively calm, and always cheerful. Rosie had been high strung, cynical and rarely ever smiled. It was probably because of this that they had been so close. Rosie was always the one who got mad before Lucia even had a chance to. It always had amused her. It was Rosie, though, who was in charge of their adventures. Sneaking out in the middle of the night, going into the sketchy woods in the back yard, things like that.
She missed her.
Lucia shoved that thought away. Unfortunately, the next thought wasn’t exactly pleasant as well. The war. The Earth student rolled onto her stomach, resting her chin on her hands. Lucia wasn’t a violent person, not really. Sure, she was a black belt. She learned after her father had died that you had to defend yourself, or you’d just get taken advantage of. But that was just it - she knew how to defend herself. Not attack anyone. Lucia had no prejudices. Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Earth, what did it matter? They were all here to learn, not fight. Naïve thought, probably, but one that she had.
But it didn’t work out that way. The Fire students seemed hell bent on destroying everything. They blamed one of her friend for murder! Lucia couldn’t see Nell killing anyone. But no one else seemed to believe that. She gave a frustrated sigh, wondering what on earth she could do. What she should do? It was true, it probably wasn’t a good idea to be out here by herself. As if that thought had summoned him, footsteps sounded above. Green-blue eyes flickered up, taking in the guy in front of her. A small smile tugged on her lips. "I can take care of myself. At it's relatively peaceful, unless you plan on attacking me." She said, raising one eyebrow at him. She really, really hoped he wouldn't.
It'd sorta put a damper on her evening. WORDS: 345 TAG: Brett NOTES: Nope... TEMPLATE CREDITS: MISS MAGGIE of Caution 2.0

Brett wasn't really too close with his siblings. There was a small age gap, and his sister actually went to the academy, but he just wasn't that kind of family oriented kid. His family knew that if they needed something they could come to him, but otherwise they had to leave him alone. It was just who he was. He was much more interested in going around and making friends. Because you could choose friends, they got along better, and they had the potential to be more loyal to him than family could be. Blood may be thicker than water, but he never really saw where water came into the picture. Except in the case of water elementals, but they were supposed to be pretty loyal. Yet another confusing bit to add to the list of things wrong with that old saying.
The girl's comment made perfect sense. It was quiet enough out here at this time of night, and he didn't really think anyone was going to orchestrate an attack when there was such a small chance of people being out here. And yet here they were, two kids right next to each other instead of being inside like everyone else. Such rebels. The way she finished her statement with a question made him smile. "Well, no promises," he said with a laugh. "I don't plan on hurting you though. Don't worry." This girl hadn't really done anything to deserve his wrath, and while he tended to show a heavily pugnacious side, that was pretty much specifically in regard to boys. He didn't believe in hitting girls unless they were hell bent on hurting him first. Even then, it would most likely be his fault, so he wouldn't want to fight back. Hopefully he'd never have to figure that whole scenario out though.
"I'm Brett, by the way," he said after a moment. It was a better way of stating that he came in peace, by establishing his identity. Hopefully she'd do the same. Making friends would have been a lot easier if there wasn't a whole elemental clash going on. Why did the school even allow separating by element? Wasn't that something like segregation? Or like promoting gangs? With either of those things came riots and rebellion, which sure would put a damper on education. How was that ever passed by a school board? It just didn't make sense. He'd have to start asking teachers these questions. Hopefully someone would have answers for his useless questions.
