"April showers might bring May flowers, but it doesn't mean I have to like it..."
The grumblings were emitted with a sigh, and he ran his hand through his hair. It was a dreary day, with dark ominous clouds crowding to sky. It was the middle of the afternoon, and yet it looked like dawn. Most of the time Danny didn't mind different weather, but he really didn't like the rain. It was the middle of April, and all it had done was rain. Which was extremely irritating, since it meant he couldn't go outside without getting wet and muddy. While he didn't mind water in general, he didn't really enjoy cold water dripping from the sky. Danny hated this time of year. Rain was not his friend.
The teenager sighed, sitting down at a table. He had been planning on going for a walk later on this afternoon, but it didn't look like that was going to happen. The Wind Elemental grumbled at his food, poking at it. Danny didn't often come to the mess hall. He tended to fair for himself, since he was doubtful of mess hall food. Even now, he eyed the mass of food on his plate, he didn't know if he wanted to eat it. He had eaten everything over the years, being so poor. His mother had often created interesting food. Not always great tasting, either. Mac n' cheese plus spaghetti sauce mixed with relish? Let's just say that Karen Boone only tried that once before she was not-so-politely turned away from trying that ever again.
Plus, Danny was alone. He was sitting in the middle of the group of tables, all by himself. Danny disliked being alone, but he wasn't about to go hunt anyone down. Too much effort. Rainy days always made him sleepy. His little sister had once called him a cat, even though he hated those furry creatures. Danny shook his head with another sigh, poking again at his mystery meat. "I have a feeling I might regret this..."

Nell really shouldn’t have been in the mess hall. Especially alone. It was a dangerous place for her in the war, as she could easily be attacked by any Thunder or Fire student who so willed it. But she was starving. ”Nell, are you really sure you wanna go?” he Earth friend asked her as Nell waved the girl away. ”I’m hungry! Of course I am! Go, go to your class!” Nell swatted her on the behind to get her to go, even though her friend was obviously worried about Nell going into the large room without an escort of some sort. Josh was in classes, so he couldn’t play bodyguard right now. Which was just as well. She could take care of herself. Nell nodded to herself, sure and confident, and walked into the room with her hands on her hips.
It was empty. Oh thank god, it was empty. No Thunder or Fire students to go messing around with her or anything. Finally, it seemed like she could have a short break from this war. Tray piled with all the food she could get her hands on, she looked out for somewhere to sit. Jeez, it was so empty, which surprised her. But then she spotted a lone person, sitting at a table and poking his food with the most crestfallen look. This kid could have been a Thunder or Fire and it could have been completely dangerous to even go near him. But he just looked so cute and lonely, it was a shame he had to be alone!
Practically skipping over to the table, she dropped her tray before sitting and proclaimed with her hands on her hips, ”Good day, stranger! I have come to save you from the emptiness that is this mess hall.” There should have been a cape waving behind her to emphasize the effect, but alas, she merely wore a t-shirt and jeans. Thank god that the weather was cooling down, though there was the fact it rained a lot now. But she didn’t necessarily hate the rain—actually, she found she really liked it. Sitting down after her little show, she leaned forward to peer at the boy. ”My name is Nell, defender of the weak and challenger of the greedy!” she declared this with a strong tone and her fist in the air. He probably had heard of her. She was the one blamed for murder, after all. Even though she really was. ”What is your name, good citizen?”
Okay, maybe she had too much energy today, but it had gone decently well. Not so many people attacked her and she’d gotten to all her classes safely. It was looking pretty nice. Hopefully, this guy would turn out to be friendly. She glanced at his foot and made a tsking noise. ”Ah, you should know better than to get the mystery meat, homes!” Nell grinned as she gestured to her overloaded tray. ”Go ahead, take something of mine. I am quite the glutton, so I only choose the best to digest.” Yes, that was supposed to rhyme. Yes, she was being incredibly dorky.

And then that war going on. Danny was confrontational when he had to be, though he much preferred talking things out. Fighting over something as stupid as this... well, it was just a waste of time. More people would get hurt, and then who knows what would happen after that. It was stupid. Danny chose to stay neutral. He wasn't about to get himself involved in this, although, if either side hurt any of his friends, there was going to be hell to pay. When he wanted to be, he was one scary mofo. But that was only if his friends got involved. Which, he prayed, they were smart enough not to.
A loud clank made the boy jump. Glancing up, hoping to God it wasn't one of those Fire or Thunder students coming to mess with him cuz he wasn't about to tolerate that, he saw a... big pile of food. For a moment he blinked at the ridiculous amount of food, then he glanced up at the girl who spoke. Danny didn't recognize her, but judging by the cheerful way she spoke, she was not a threat. He couldn't help the crooked smile that crossed his face at her extravagant introduction. Well, it looked like his day just got a bit more interesting. Danny grinned at the stranger.
In response to her words, he bowed slightly. "Why thank you, my lady Nell, I greatly appreciate it. I do not know how long I could've stood this empty table all by myself." He said in a grave voice. Yep, Danny could be just as silly. "I'm Daniel, though you can call me Danny if you'd like. Most people do." Only his mother called him by his full name. But that was okay. It was a mother's right, he supposed, and he certainly didn't mind it.
At her tsking sound, Danny sigh. "I was going to be brave today, you see. But not even bravery can overcome this." He poked it with his fork. "See! It MOVES. I don't think food is suppose to do that!" Danny was thoroughly creeped out. Even his mother could do better than this! "Are you sure? I wouldn't want to take your food, Nell." He said, his gentleman honour his mother drummed into him taken front and centre. Silly him.

Oops, she thought, feeling bad when she startled the guy. She scrunched her eyebrows together in an apologetic look, also moving her eyes up and down over him. After keen evaluation, he seemed friendly enough. STATUS: APPROACHABLE, her inner sensors read. The guy didn’t even seem to recognize her, thank the lord. It seemed her name had become infamous around school. Mainly because the leaders announced her name along with ‘murderer’ when they had made their big damn entrance in the mess hall that one morning. She had left quickly, not wanting to stay and having a very keen sense that it would have been dangerous to do so. And throughout the war, too. But now there was only this kid, who looked like a cutiepie and was pretty affable. Then he grinned, and she was sure of it. No threat here!
She saluted him with a grave expression matching his own. ”I’m here for ya, amigo.” Nell shook her head then. ”Tis a shame no one would think to sit with you.” Clicking her tongue in mock disapproval, she sent a smile toward him. Today certainly did feel like a good day, especially now that she wasn’t dealing with any of the drama this war brought with it. ”Well, it’s nice to meet you Danny, sir. Especially since you’re not trying to kill me. That gets you brownie points.” Anyone who didn’t lunge for her throat these days was her automatic friend.
Nell gasped, her hand fluttering over her chest when he poked the meat. ”Holy hamburger, Batman! What have those villainous lunch ladies done?” She shook her head at his concern, waving him away. ”But I do want you to take my food. Go ahead. Do it.” She said the last part solemnly. Then she pulled back and smiled. ”Seriously, I probably took too much anyway. Pizza, fruit cups, cookies, all that good stuff.” The fancy stuff cost extra, but with her dad’s money she tended to go all out. And though she told Danny she had taken too much, this was actually a smaller portion than she usually got.

He studied the girl in front of him, eyes curious. He didn't know her, not that it was all that strange. While he certainly didn't keep to himself, he didn't strive to know everyone. She did seem familiar, as did her name. He frowned slightly, then mentally shrugged. Whatever. It didn't really matter to him. She seemed fairly nice to him, and, hey, anyone who offered to share food was obviously a good person, right? At least in Danny's book they were. He grinned impishly at her. "So what are you doing here, besides eating that ginormous amount of food you have there. Are you really going to eat all that?" The affable guy sat back in his chair, gesturing to the tray she had set on the table.
"It's nice to meet you too, Nell. I'm actually really glad you showed up. Sitting by ones self is rather sad, and really no fun. But I'd rather not sit with them, either."Danny nodded towards where the Fire students sat. There were several of them sitting there, blissfully ignoring them. At least, for now. Danny raised an eyebrow at her. "Kill you? Well, that'd certain put a damper on your day, don't you think, Nell? And killing people takes so much effort." He sighed in mock regret, eyes twinkling as he spoke. Danny had no reason to want to kill Nell; why would anyone?
Danny leaned forward, lowering his voice dramatically. "I think it's an evil plot of theirs to make as many students as they can sick. I think they enjoy it." Was he serious? Well, not even Danny knew. There was something awfully fishy about the mysterious lump of... mystery. But would the cooks try and poison the students? Danny had his suspicions, which he decided to keep to himself. Danny grinned at the solemn part. "Your wish is my command, m'lady," He said with a courtly bow as he took a fruit cup. Yep. Health nut he was not, but he definitely did like his fruit. "So how is your day going?"

Nell winked at the guy sitting across from her and said, ”Why, I’m enjoying meeting you. And trying to avoid certain people, ya know.” Which was everyone who wanted to attack her. And that meant half the school. Safe haven wasn’t usually found in the mess hall, but here she was. At least she met a new and interesting person. She grinned at his question. "Watch me. You know what I've been thinking: I should join eating competitions. I would sweep the floor, I tell you." Hey, that could be a new hobby or something. Competitive eating. It was pretty much impossible to exaggerate her appetite.
Glad that her presence made Danny feel better (because that’s all she ever wanted, others to be happy), she said, ”All in a day’s work, sir.” Then, seriously she said, ”No one likes to sit all alone. Why were you sitting along anyway?” Nell wondered if he had many friends, and she’d be glad to help that. She had helped Dani open up to meeting others, after all. It was something she liked to do, make people comfortable and ready for new experiences. When he raised his eyebrows and lamented the effort it took to murder, she laughed, shifting her head back. ”Oh, you’re just so very sweet! But I must say, you’re a bit of a minority.” Then, mischievously, she leaned and close, ”But there are ways to kill that would take less effort!” She only joked, of course, because murder was high on her list of no-nos. Unless…unless for good reason, she supposed. And yet she couldn’t help feel regret for her matricide. ”Though my lips are sealed!” she ended extravagantly, not aware that this may be marked as suspicious. But he had yet to make comment on the war, so she wondered if he even knew what was going on.
She nodded and rubbed her chin as if taking Danny’s words gravely. ”I believe we should tell the commissioner about this, Batman,” Nell said, continuing the reference. But the quality of the food was seriously something to worry about. When he took the fruit cup, she jested, ”I am quite flattered that you have partaken of my feast, good sir.” Then she giggled, holding her hand in front of her mouth. ”That sounded dirty.” She considered his question before actually deciding to answer. During the war, she usually answered that she was simply fine even if it really wasn’t. Even when she was completely exhausted and hurt and scared. But today…today was pretty good. ”I am doing fantabulous. Got up this morning, and looked out my window and saw the world was bright. One of those kind of days.” Her optimism could be sickening at times, but she was mostly joking. ”And you, my dear Danny? What have you done so far this fine day?”
