I TREMBLE (they’re gonna eat me alive) can you hear my heart beating like a hammer? HELP I’M ALIVE Fire students. They attacked in groups, and right now they were a pack of wolves around her. She hated the feeling of being cornered, but now Nell was feeling it more than ever. And it was bringing back some memories she tried her hardest to forget. ”Just back up, kay?” she said, tilting her head down to send them a death glare she’d been working on. But of course it didn’t work too well. Who could be afraid of a little five-foot-two earth girl? Well, they thought she was a murderer, so it couldn’t be too far-fetched. You are a murderer, Nell. It seemed like her jackass of an aunt has invaded her brain to beat herself up over this. She cupped her hands together, already nursing a burn, one of many these days.
Why did they have to be older than her? And Fire? Even if she did use her powers against them, it would be in vain. She ran through distractions frantically in her mind. What to do, what to do…? ”Oh, hello Professor Levkova,” Nell said amiably, looking off down the hall. That made them all scram pretty quickly, knowing how shit would get real if the professor saw a fight going down. She sighed, and looked down at her wounded arm. Josh had told her not to leave things hanging, but there was nothing she could do. The medical wing was not a friendly place, and she couldn’t go to the hospital in Maple Hollow since school was still going on and this was an elemental burn. Though Josh’s father was the chief there… No, she decided it would be best just to head to the lake.
But as she stepped out onto the grounds, skipping yet another class, she looked over at a tree still looking so naked and bare even though winter was beginning its thaw. Maybe she could wait up there until school was out to avoid any more trouble. Last time she sat up in a tree, she was bullied, though. By Cynthia. Cynthia. Every time she thought of her, it filled her with sadness she shouldn’t have felt. Yes, she felt grief for any loss of human life, even when she was accused of taking. Nell sighed again, something she did a lot now. Was there any way to fix things? How could she make all of this stop and prove her innocence? It didn’t matter so much that she was getting injured, but her friends who had sided with her were being injured, too. And Nell refused to let that happen. However, she knew of only one way to end this.
Her death.
Nell didn’t want to die, so that was out of the question. And unfortunately, now she had people who didn’t want her to die. Unfortunately. That sounded wrong. But when their safety was in danger, she’d rather not have anyone on her side.
Stepping up to the tree, she placed her burnt right hand against the tree and leaned her forehead against the bark. It felt like the tree itself was stirring, ready to be reborn and grow again. Even though she shouldn’t have because she was already weakened by the burn, she gave it an extra boost and the green leaves began to open up along the branches, growing thick and healthy. And yet she still couldn’t use her element to defend herself because she was afraid of what she could do. What she already had done to her mother. Now sufficiently exhausted, she slid down the trunk to sit down and wait a few minutes before heading off to the lake.

--- i'll be there when you close your eyes ,. ( HOLD YOU TIGHT, SAY GOODNIGHT ) She walked down the halls of the college classrooms, trying to keep her head down from all who passed, even fellow earth kids. She knew that the earth kids were getting picked on for what happened to the fire leader at the high school. Well, she would be pissed too, but she wouldn't go and start a war over it. She wished she knew who had begun this whole crap. She sighed as she basically hid behind her notebooks and psychology book on the way outside. Normally, she would just go out to the gardens or something and just get left alone if she was actually doing something. Being a college kid kind of got her out of trouble sometimes, but she still couldn't avoid it; that was for sure.
She sighed, thinking of the girl's name who got thrown around a lot for the murder of the fire leader; the two had acutally been relatively close even though she may have been a frade younger. Nell Shepherd. Nell had this plot in her mind that she was going to bring Ari out of her shell. The girl was very self-doubting and hated public speaking. Ari had a bit of social anxiety per say in shorter terms. And this war boiling war between the elements wasn't helping her at all. She wasn't assertive or mean at all. If a fire kid was to try and fight her, she would have no idea what to do. She had been in verbal fights, but never physical fights. Ari was very small, slim, and not well-built for a fist fight. The best she could do for a fight is wrap some vines around wrists and ankles to try and slow the other down before they chased after her.
She shuttered at the thought and just continued down the hall. A taller boy pushed her against the wall. She dropped her chemistry book and sighed. Some nice kid that was in her math class bent down and picked it up for her. She gave him a slight smile of gratitude and almost sprinted for the outside now. She just went for a walk today, no where specific though. She readjusted her scarf around her neck and then loosened it. When she passed by students, she just put her head down, trying to not get eye contact with anyone.
Once she got half way around the ground, some jerk boy stole her hat and started to toss it around to his buddies. She growned as they played monkey-in-the-middle with her basically. She leaned on her left side as she held her books, waiting for the stupid boys to get done. Why did she swing for boys again? Oh yeah, girls were just too dramatic. However, the boys at the school were getting to this point as well. She rolled her eyes and as her hat was flying over the middle of her, she used a nearby vine to grab it. She knew that using her powers wasn't exactly the best thing in the world to do right now, but she didn't care. She was tired of just standing in the middle of this whole thing.
And with her luck, they were both fire kids. They kind of backed her up against a tree and flipped her books out of her hands. They stole her hat once again and threatened to burn it up. She kind of reached for it, but they denied her. One of the boys picked up her books and began to read through them. So, you think you must be very smart, taking the super advanced classes huh? She rolled her eyes at the two of them. The one threw her books on the ground and put his shoe on the top of them. "Can you please stop? That stuff is very important." She shouldn't have said that. They started to pick on her more. They began to threaten her more and more; basically saying they would hurt her with their fire power.

I TREMBLE (they’re gonna eat me alive) can you hear my heart beating like a hammer? HELP I’M ALIVE Nell was about ready to make her way to the lake when she noticed a commotion. Steering her eyes over, she saw Aristotle being cornered against a tree by a couple of guys. Oh no. Her jaw instantly clenched as she drew closer. No one fucked with Ari when she was around, ever. She really liked the shy girl, and was determined to see her become more extroverted. And Nell generally got easily attached to others. Especially since she saw a bit of herself in the girl being cornered by Fire jerks. She imagined those two as her mother, and that didn’t settle well in her mind. The thing with Nell is that you could burn her alive and she wouldn’t do anything to retaliate. But when it came to other people being fucked with—especially her friends—that was a sore spot.
Still, she wasn’t confident enough in her abilities. But she wasn’t afraid—that was when she went berserk with them. She was just pissed. Still, Nell needed to be underhanded and tricky. Especially since she heard their threats upon closing in—Fire students. So, she approached the two silently and put a finger of her lips as a signal to Ari not to give her away. Focusing on the ground beneath the feet of the guy on her books, she grew a vine and very carefully made it tug him so he toppled over, crashing to the ground. Even that little display of her powers was scary for her, but she made sure to keep calm and smiled over at the other guy. ”You’ll give me the hat, or I’ll play the snitch and tell a Water professor.” She wasn’t very scary since she was an Earth student, but she had an older Water to threaten them with. It looked like the guy was smart enough not to risk it, and threw the hat at her, grabbing his other friend and walking away with a few muttered insults and glares. Nell rolled her eyes.
Stepping up to Ari, she held out the hat. Concern was all that she felt now. “Are you okay, Riri?” The nickname was one she’d adopted for the college graduate, since she called Arielle ‘Ari’ and it could get confusing sometimes. ”If they hurt you, I could take you to the hospital. I don’t think the medical wing is very safe for me, and Earth students in general.” Which is why she wanted to simply soak her injured arm in water. She wouldn’t go to the hospital for herself, but if they laid a finger on Aristotle they would be discovering Nell’s more devious side. And they would also be taking a trip to hospital. Even though Ari was very intent on her studies and an intelligent girl, her health was more important than her classes. "Stupid jerks, they're just all roaming around like rabid dogs." Nell was very exasperated with this war, especially since it was putting people in danger. Not that girls like Ari didn't get picked on in general--it was sad, but the war only intensified it.

--- i'll be there when you close your eyes ,. ( HOLD YOU TIGHT, SAY GOODNIGHT ) She just sighed and waited for the two jerks to get tired and leave her alone. She just rolled her eyes and stood with her back against the tree. She saw something flinch out of the corner of her eye when she turned her head to the left. She looked back and tried not to smile at the girl that was going to be her savior. Nell. She pressed her finger against her lip to motion not for Ari to give her away. Ari bit her bottom lip trying not to smile at what these jerks were gonna get. Ari started to see a vine grow at the bottom of one guy's feet. Nell made the guy fall to the ground and then smiled at the other, saying that she would be a snitch if he didn't give her the hat. The guy threw the hat at her, got his other friend up, and the two walked away, mumbling under their breath.
Ari took a sigh of relief and picked up her books. She leaned back against the tree and put her leg up and tried brushing off the dirty foot print the one guy had left on the top notebook. She looked inside to make sure that he didn't mess it up too bad. The front page was a little beat up, but still readable. She closed the notebook as Nell handed her the hat back. She tucked the books in between her legs and put the hat back on her head and listened to Nell's concerned voice. "I'm perfectly fine. I promise. Just a little shook up is all." She then started talking about taking her to the hospital. She said that she didn't think the medical wing was very safe for her, or any of the earth kids for that matter. "No. I'm fine. They didn't actually hurt me really." The boys didn't really touch her, just backed her up against the tree.
She then said that they were stupid jerks, just roaming around like dogs. Ari wrapped her arms around her books tighter, "Yeah. This is the first time that I've been threatened. Usually it's just bumping into me or flipping books out of my hand." She knew that she was going to have to get used to this with the talk of war on the upbringing. She looked at Nell and thought about this whole thing. She wouldn't do anything like that, would she? No. Of course not. Ari rarely saw her use her power and even if Cynthia picked on her a lot, she wouldn't kill her, right? She tried just erasing the whole thing from her mind and the stuff that just went down. "So, what are you up to?" she asked trying to change the subject. She seemed to be good at that.

I TREMBLE (they’re gonna eat me alive) can you hear my heart beating like a hammer? HELP I’M ALIVE Nell watched as the girl brushed off her books and picked them up. Poor Ari. Never mind that their main target was her, Ari’s the one who had to deal with so many asshats all the time. Just because she was too nice to do anything, they thought they could fuck with her. Nell guessed it was similar with most Earth students, including her. Her passivity is what made her the victim—to both her mother and anyone else who decided to touch her.
Studying the girl’s eyes for a few moments as Ari assured her that she had not been touched, she eventually nodded sure that her friend wasn’t lying to her about that. They were damn lucky, then. She wouldn’t be a happy camper if Ari had to suffer more than she already had. Still, Nell worried if they had done more than she’d said. She always worried about that, with her own history of blowing off injuries like they were nothing. Smiling, she said, ”That’s good. No hospital for you, then.” The fugitive girl didn’t really like the hospital, anyway. She guessed because her last time in one was rather traumatic, waking up with her body completely sore and her stomach burning, her family just attacking her like vultures, and the shock of even when she first woke up that caused her to vomit and open her stitches. Fun times.
First time she’d been actually threatened? She really wished she could reassure Ari that she’d make sure she was never messed with again, but Nell couldn’t. She was powerless. Nell shook her head. ”Flipping books out of your hands is still not cool. Nothing they do to you is cool.” Nell sighed then, scratching her head. ”I’m sorry that you have to go through this just because the Thunders and Fires think they can have free reign with this war. It’s getting way out of hand...” She always wanted to explain how she didn’t kill Cynthia, that she wanted this war to end, but those supporting her already got that. Which is why they stood beside her even though they could have just left her to the Thunders wrath. But no. They had to put themselves in danger’s path, including innocent little Ari who just wanted to get to classes. Nell didn’t know whether to be angry or exhausted. Either way, she just wanted this all to end. If it were any safer, she’d try to talk to the leaders. But there was truly nothing she could do.
Nell tilted her head as she shifted the subject from schoolyard bullies. Subtle, and Nell completely understood. ”I got a pretty new burn,” she said, waving her hand a bit with a smile to show off the red mark on her hand. Thank god for her pain threshold. And now, it was just becoming habit. She was collecting injuries liked some collect bottlecaps. ”Was going down to the lake to help soothe it. Wanna come with?”
