How Nell ended up on the beach in a superhero costume on a Saturday evening was a long story.
Or rather, it felt like that. It had started off with a costume party. Nell liked costume parties, costumes in general. She played around with her fashion anyway, so being invited to one of these soirees just provided an excuse for her to go out and by whatever random costume she could. She didn't want to repeat previous ones, like her bee costume and her Dora the Explorer. So, she had gone with a superhero costume, something she'd always wanted to do considering her love for comics. She decided to make it herself, having invested in a sewing machine before to hem any clothes that may have gotten torn. Shelling out cash for more clothes was definitely not her style, but costumes were different as she didn't have many herself.
The night had started off very well, and she abstained from drinking any alcohol, seeing as it was a rather large party. Were it just a small group of friends she'd feel more comfortable, but this had turned into a large gathering hosted by a friend she didn't know too well, though she'd been over to the house a few times already. She still liked the girl, and was ready to socialize with anyone that came that night. It turned out to be a pretty decent crowd, though it wasn't very hard to impress Nell.
She danced for an hour or two before heading out to the back of the house in order to get some air. The press of bodies in the living room suffocated her, and even though she wasn't very tired at all, she needed to get out of there before panic set in. Unfortunately, upon opening the door, she saw a dash of white before it disappeared out into the lawn. Nell blinked, thinking she may have been seeing things before she saw more movement in the backyard and realized that it was her friend's cat. She looked over her shoulder before closing the porch door. What's his name? Pud...Pudgy? "Pudgy?" she called out uncertainly, before closing the porch door behind her and walking further out.
The cat quickly ran away and it soon turned into a chase. She headed through other lawns, telepathically apologizing to all the people's properties she was trespassing through as she followed the white kitty. A part of her acknowledged the strange sight, a masked woman yelling "Pudgy" as she ran through the streets after a cat. A cat that must have been rather superheroic itself seeing as how fast it ran. She jogged after it until she lost track of it, sighing and leaning over to rest her hands on her knees. What did she do now? She was already lost, no idea of where she had gotten to, and was far away from the party. Blinking, she felt along her abdomen and then the back of her skirt. Right. Phone was back at the house.
Nell started walking again, calling out Pudgy while making soft sounds that cats apparently liked, judging from experience with her own. This cat just wanted to be difficult. By the time she reached the beach, the area a little more familiar, she felt desperation sat in. She'd lost her friend's cat. The realization made her feel abysmal, and the emotion started to choke her. How terrible of a friend could she be? "Pudge!" she called out again, cupping her hands over her mouth as she walked along the shore. The usual calming site of the lake didn't do much for her that night.

Cause I belong to the hurricane; Leo always took Saturdays off. Saturday was his day. He slept in late and then he did whatever Leopold wanted to do. Normally he'd take about an hour to do some homework if he had it. Then the rest of the day was his. He had spent a few hours reading in the garden at the Academy. Being in that garden just resonated with him. He giggled at the thought. Guess that's what being an Earthie is all about. Then he had sent his mother about twenty text messages begging for a puppy. Again.
Ever since he was six Leo had wanted a dog. His mother wanted to let him have one, but said she wanted to make sure that he was responsible enough to take care of another living soul. He remembered sitting with her in their garden, cross legged, eyes closed, meditating. She would walk him through deep meditations, telling him that connecting with the Earth on a spiritual level would help to make him a better person. Not just a better elemental. He wondered for a moment if she knew of his desires. That he wanted to become the leader of his people. That he wanted to keep the peace between them and their enemies. That he wanted to make her proud.
He seriously doubted she knew any of that. His mother was a wonderful woman and he loved her truly, deeply. However, she was a hippie, an environmentalist. Picking up on the nuances of social interaction was not her strong suite. The thought made him smile. At least he had one thing he could thank his terrible father for.
Wow. That was something he never thought he'd say, to himself or anyone else. Gently he shook his head. He didn't have time to think about Jason. Life was too short and far too sweet. His bright blue eyes were locked on the water. He could feel the grains of sand fall between his feet as he pushed them, bare, into the depths of golden glory. His moccasins sat next to him, like silent companions in the night. Wiggling his toes he winced as the breeze blew into his open shirt. Even with the bandage over his wound the wind made searing pain radiate out from the dent in his chest.
Gently he reached up and touched the bandage. The softness of the fabric against the sensitive skin of his fingertips made him feel better. Still he could feel the bubbling sensation of panic in the pit of his stomach, threatening, no demanding, to rise up. Well, that just was not acceptable. He looked down at that bandage. That one little dent where the flesh was missing, where the bone glittered white against his slightly tanned skin, might be all that stood in his way of becoming a leader. He sighed, the breath tickling his lips slightly. He could taste the salt in the air and it soothed him.
Suddenly he heard a woman's voice calling. The sound danced on the wind, like a ballerina in her prime. His shirt! Reaching down Leo swiftly began shoving buttons into holes. His only hope for getting that position of leadership among his people was to hide this physical weakness from everyone. Fool. You don't even know if you have their support. He shook his head, as if doing so would chase away his demons, would force his skeletons to dance deeper into the closet of his mind.
Glancing down Leopold saw that he had managed to put every button into a hole. However, he had not managed to put those buttons into their specific holes. "Shit!" He mumbled, trying to fix the buttons. He managed to get them all unbuttoned and the place only the first two buttons in their respective holes when the woman came closer. She looked older then him, maybe a college student? Leo pushed the sand with his hands, standing up slowly. He brushed his hands on his pants, trying to rid his palms of the tiny grains of golden glory. "Miss, are you alright?"

Nell had not noticed anyone else out there. While she did have very good vision, she did not have night vision, as awesome as it would have been. Her mask did not help, either, considering that it messed with her peripheral vision. It didn't matter; she had a lot of pride in this costume. It was a little more form-fitting than she would have liked, but she was used to that by now what with her work uniform. Really, the simple act of creating meant the most to Nell. She had many passions, and they all stemmed from the simple act of birthing something that had never existed before. She'd made her own car, her outfit, and her element was creation in its simplest form. She possessed the genesis of Earth, and that was amazing.
What she did not possess, however, was superpowers because unlike Batman, her costume didn't give her any gadgets. Thus, she stopped walking when she heard the voice, squinted. She saw the outline of a person, a boy it looked like. "Mrs...." she corrected automatically, momentarily forgetting the situation at hand. It had become a habit when she first got married, informing the professors that she wasn't a miss anymore. She enjoyed her new title. "Oh!" she exclaimed, remember why she had come out her in the first place. "Oh no, I'm all right, I'm searching for a cat, actually. I don't suppose you've seen one? He's white, some brown on his fur." The woman didn't mention that he responded to the name Pudge, considering it wouldn't matter if he knew that now, even if he had seen him before. Still, it almost passed her lips because of the worry that was almost overwhelming.
Then, she realized how odd this situation was. Well, not only because she was dressed in a costume and calling out Pudgy. What was this gentleman doing out here? "Are you all right?" she asked him, worry coloring her tone. She naturally fretted on ever human being she encountered, worried about every little thing about them. Was he okay? Did he get hurt? Maybe he needed help more than she did! It didn't cross her mind that he could be dangerous, always too easy to trust people she had never seen before. Never met. But he had a kind voice, and she figured that it was enough basis to make her decision. She didn't need a reason to trust people, did she? Nell view automatically distrusting people to be an actual problem. That's the worrisome part of things.

Cause I belong to the hurricane; When the young woman corrected him Leo instantly looked apologetic. There were many things his hippie of a mother taught him. He loved his mother and her free-loving ways. She had helped him become the man he was now. And there were two things she stressed above all others; love and respect. Especially toward women. Women were special, they were to be cherished. After all, life was possible because of them. They did the difficult work; carried the child, birthed the child. His mother had taught him that women deserved all of his respect for that fact. Even if the woman has no children she deserves your respect, Lely. We are strong simply for our ability to do such a miraculous act.
Leo turned his attention back to the young woman before him. "I'm terribly sorry, Mrs. I didn't mean any disrespect." Leo was patient as the Mrs. explained to him that she was fine and was simply searching for a cat. Now Leo had never been much of a fan of cats. Kittens were a different story. However, he never really had any desire to own a cat. Still, they were living beings and to him that meant they were important. They deserved everything every other living thing deserved; a home, a full tummy, warmth, and someone who loved them. For this precise reason Leo instantly felt sympathy for the lost kitty.
As Leopold responded his lower lip jutted out slightly in a sad little pout. He shook his head softly, "No. I'm sorry, I haven't seen him. However, I would be happy to help you try to find him." Before the Earthie was even finished speaking his bright blue eyes were glancing around, searching for any sign of feline movement. In fact, he was so intent on catching such signs of movement that he almost didn't hear what the young lady had asked him. For this reason he didn't respond for several seconds. As the silence grew heavy Leo began to realize he'd missed something and took a moment to process what it might have been.
"Oh!" He laughed softly. His left hand reached up and gently touched his covered wound. It was unconsciously done. "I'm perfectly alright. Thank you for your concern though. You don't see that often anymore." As he replied a soft look came to his face, making it obvious that he meant every word he said. He genuinely felt great gratitude towards this woman. "Oh! Where on Earth are my manners?" He exclaimed before offering his right hand out for the young lady to shake if she so desired. "My name is Leopold. It's a pleasure to meet, Ma'am." Outfit. Word. 459. Note. Sorry this took so long. Work got crazy. :[

When the boy apologized for being disrespectful, she instantly felt as though she had made a mistake. "Ahhh oh, no, don't worry! I am rather young," she said frantically, looking down at herself. It didn't help that she was currently dressed in latex. "I mean I wouldn't expect anyone to know, don't worry about it, haha. Gosh, I'm sorry..." Her voice was frantic, never wanting anyone to feel bad. The easiest way to tell would be the rings on her finger, but they could not be identified in the dark. She wore them everywhere but in the shower, and they were her most favorite possessions. Proud of her marriage, at the same time she didn't want this stranger to feel bad for the assumption. Only twenty-one, it was safe to assume she hadn't made that sort of commitment yet.
And this kid was rather adorable, she thought. Well, she couldn't really call him kid she looked like a high schooler herself. However, she couldn't help the maternal feeling in her gut, how she felt toward anyone who looked young. She just wanted to take care of them, something instinctive. Honestly, it was one of the pros on her list of "reasons to have children." It had been on her mind ever since Josh brought it up when they were discussing the wedding, and she had only been reminded during their game of twenty questions after she tried to change her accent. She knew he wanted them, and she said she wanted them too, but that didn't mean she was at all certain.
She beamed when he said that he would help her out. "Really? Jeez, thank you so much! That's really nice!" Positively in awe of this, she felt indebted to him for choosing to help her out. The kindness of strangers never ceased to amaze her. It's part of the reason she loved the world so much; people never failed to show generosity.
Not to mention, he was exceptionally polite. She found it very endearing, as a matter of fact. Despite how cute he was, his appearance reminded her of someone she was not very fond of. It was only a quick feeling, which she looked past when he thanked her for her concern and introduced herself. He offered his hand, and she shook it with a smile. "Nice to meet ya, I'm Nell," she told him. Luckily, the night was warm so she didn't feel any immediate desire to move. "If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing out here?" As if she wasn't the odd one. But really, it was strange and rather worrisome for a guy to be out at night. Or maybe that simply was her natural concern.
Speaking of odd, she realized that she hadn't explained the get-up. "Uhm, just so you know I don't normally dress like this. Costume party." She laughed easily. While she was known to wear some strange things on occasion, she didn't normally put on a mask to walk around at night.
Nell figured she might as well start searching with him, she began trekking through the sand again, lifting up her feet. Picking them up and trying not to let it suck her feet in, she let her eyes scan around her feet. Would they have noticed her missing by now? She hoped not. Realizing that she would have to explain what had happened upon her return, she didn't want to explain that she had let out the cat even if it was on accident.
