CLOTHING STYLE Call her kinda scene, kinda goth, kinda casual doesn’t care. Naima doesn’t dress for anyone, and since she had to buy her own clothes she tends to get worn, simple, colorless clothing. It doesn’t mean she doesn’t have style, just that she has to make it up from scratch.

HISTORY Naima was born to a comely earth elemental and her pious water elemental husband in our very own Maple Hollow. She learned from a very early point to expect to gain powers of her own, and while her mother was not showing her the wonderful side of moving and communing with a natural force, her father was telling her about everything she was doing wrong or could do wrong or probably would do wrong when she finally gained her powers. More than once as she grew up she would hear one of her parents mention how much of a troublemaker she was, how rebellious, and how they hoped this didn’t mean they had produced one of “those.” Naima didn’t have the courage to ask her father what he meant. But she didn’t ask her mother once, and the answer was as matter-of-fact as could be.
“Why, a fire or thunder elemental, sweetie. They really should never have evolved in the first place, those…. Well. I’m sure you’ll be a water, just like your dear father.”
The first time she heard this is made her feel better. But then she continued to grow, and continued to see her father frowning in her direction. He’d shake his head when she punched that one kid who was trying to steal her lunch, or decide to buy herself something special with her birthday money rather than donate it to the church. He started forcing her to attend, but it did little good. She didn’t listen much, instead watching people and often sneaking money from the tithe box. Her father saw her one time. He made her give it back and spoke to her for a very long time, saying things like she needed to make sure she grew up nice and kind so she could be water or earth like her parents.
The longer she was around other people the worse it got. Nai thought of very few people other than herself, and tended to think that whatever she wanted she needed. No matter how many times her father scolded her or her mother tried to help her see things the ‘right’ way, she couldn’t ever live up. She tried very hard to share her things, say nice things, and even smile at strangers. But her father always looked on and shook his head, and her mother always pressed her lips together and sighed through her nose.
When they took her camping for her twelfth birthday, things seemed to change. Away from the multitudes of people and strangers that seemed to bring out the bad side in her, Nai started showing an interest in the earth and would follow her mother around and watch her create flowers from the frozen ground. She tried once or twice, and her father smiled at her and told her she might just end up an earth elemental. That week was one of the best of her life, and she smiled and laughed more that week than she had in a year. But when they went home, things when back to normal. She couldn’t resist the urge to swindle people out of money or fruit cups or time. Her father couldn’t approve of her. Her mother couldn’t answer a direct question.
Year fourteen rolled around and she discovered her power in a way that nearly killed her best friend. That wasn’t the worst part, though. The worst part was how her father looked at her when he was told what had happened. Electric shock through the pool water. Didn’t hurt her, so what had it come from? Her, obviously. Which meant she could control electricity. Which meant she was one of “those” whom she had heard her parents talk about with such vehemence. The look he gave her was chilling to her core, and he didn’t speak to her before she went to the Academy. Her breaks were terrible, since going home was terrible. Her mother still associated with her, but her father pretended she didn’t exist.
Eventually Nai got angry, deciding her father was a bigoted asshole. And she tries not to feel it when he sees her and just walks away. But even the best acting can’t change the wrenching in her heart.
