The courtyard was picturesque in its silence; the only noises were the fountain’s bubbling as well as the occasional snuffle of a page as she turned it. The statues were overly eerie, seemingly staring at her and so every now and then she would lift her head and stare back. She noted that the place would look much better if they put a few potted plants or something of colour in it. In her opinion all the stone made it dull and boring, the earth people looked after it didn’t hey? Why didn’t they put like plants, they were earth after all. Once she realised she was distracted she would return to her books and continue what she was doing.
Now most would study in the library, in their dorms or in any other place but the fact that she was sitting in an uncomfortable position and using a bench as a table seemed to help her concentration all the more. Of course it could have been the fact that she was outside, which was of course the idea that she decided to stick with. It would be strange to have to explain to someone that she enjoyed studying in strange places in comparison with saying she liked studying outside.
She dragged an orange highlighter across her page haphazardly, creating a line that was not overly straight but it made the text stand out. She was beginning to get lazily and not only were her amazing highlighting skills showing it but so were her summaries. The work of studying, although interesting at times was all in all boring and one could avoid the boredom of the work for only so long. So with a resolute sigh she closed the book with a snap that seemed to have a finality to it and she turned to stare at the fountain. The bench’s seat dug into her back but she wasn’t in the mood to stand up and sit on the bench itself.
She watched the water as it bubbled through the fountain and she thought of her sister’s pet chameleon name Leo. Cute little creature he was, it was a pity she wasn’t able to bring him with. She knew a few boarding schools permitted pets yet she hadn’t ever looked into this one’s policy. Plus she had like a year left, what was the use just so that she could get a hamster? She bit her lip and then looked up, attempting to fin shapes in the clouds.

It was a rather quiet day. It wasn't as though Lucy didn't appreciate a nice, quiet day, serene with enough warmth and not too many clouds, but it was just a tad on the boring side all the same. She had put aside her botany-centered thoughts for the day, or at least the ones that required studying, and had decided to go outside for a walk in the fresh air. Any day that wasn't raining was a good day to go for a walk after all, and even when it was raining she would still usually be in the mood for one, if only for a shorter while than usual.
Lucy found herself wandering to the fountain today. She usually just let her feet carry her places and her mind wander, especially if there wasn't much to be done otherwise. She was almost certain she had some type of homework to do, but couldn't remember what it was, and was daydreaming in class when it was assigned and hadn't written it down. Perhaps she'd ask a fellow classmate about it sometime... she wondered when it was due. Most of the time she did get her homework turned in at some point, but there were always those uncomfortable situations in class when the students were told to hand in their homework and Lucy had nothing to show for herself because she'd had no idea that they'd been assigned it in the first place.
Either way, that didn't worry her at the moment as she strolled cheerfully along. She did reach the fountain at some point, still relatively unconcerned of her surroundings, and glanced around before noticing someone sitting nearby. She was in a rather odd position, as she wasn't sitting on the bench itself but in front of it in a way, with a textbook of some sorts nearby. Lucy was rather curious about the whole ordeal and why the girl wasn't sitting on the bench like most students would, and so she couldn't help but speak to her.
"Why're you sitting down there, isn't it uncomfortable?" she asked rather bluntly. But then again, she had a rather blunt nature. Not to be rude or anything, of course. It was just the way of things. She always spoke bluntly, as it was merely how she thought of things. She wasn't one to keep thoughts only in her head. She never meant anything offensively. It always surprised her when people were offended by something she said. Oh well. She didn't say anything offensive anyway- a mere inquiry was all that it was today.
