Needless to say, things had gotten a little bit awkward. Everything about the whole situation her and Emmett where in seemed to be awkward. She wasn't too sure how to explain how it was gonig on. She was good with guys, it wasn't like she was shy or anything. But relationships - at least meaningful ones, anyways. Even friendships where weird for her. Asher was the first one to really start breaking down her walls enough to be considered her best friend. Emmett was getting there, though. Maybe not as a best friend - but something a little different. She had no idea how to explain their relationship. She hadn't really told many people about it - just for the sake that she wasn't sure what it was.
She thought they where dating - but again, she hadn't ever had a real boyfriend. Not one that she considered for more than sex anyways. Emmett was a completely different story though. Not that she wouldn't consider having sex with him, but not like she was pushing it. He was so much different than most other guys that showed a genuine interest in her. Hell - he had stayed with her while she was drunk off her ass to prevent her from doing anything stupid with any other guys. That took a least a little bit of determination. And the fact that he had told her things that she doubted he told many people. She still had no idea what to think, and figured that today they should talk about it. Since, well, they where meeting out here.
Why they had decided to meet out on the streets of the town she had no idea. But it was a nice place to just.. talk. Go for a walk. no other people really to distract them. So that was probably why. She found herself craving to be around him, to talk to him. Mostly because she wanted to know what was going on with them. Or that was what she told herself anyways. She had her hands shoved in the pockets of her sweatshirt, and her gaze was on the windows of the shops as she walked by them. Yes, she loved her clothes. So, she liked to look. Even if she didn't have much money to spend on them.
"Ew. Who the hell would wear that." She said, spotting an ugly, green dress through the window. She wasn't one much for wearing dresses and stuff anyways, unless it was for a dance or something. She wrinkled her nose up and let her gaze follow onto some other things in the store. "Looks like somebody killed a dinosaur and taped it to that shoe." She said outloud to herself, rolling her eyes. She was a bit judgemental, but when clothes and shoes where that ugly, something had to be said. She sighed and continued walking .After a little bit longer, she spotted Emmett walking towards her, and pulled a hand out of her pocket, and smiled and waved at him. "Hey!" She said, once they got within ear shot, and stopped walking a few feet from him. "How're you?" She asked, still smiling at him, and letting her bright blue eyes scan his.

Lately, it had been...hard for Emmett. Dealing with the fact that he told his secret to someone he barely knew and all these new feelings were just so unfamiliar to him. And he didn't know what to think, to be honest. Should he be happy? Scared? After that night and the following morning, things became...awkward. Something Emmett hadn't anticipated, really. He thought at least some things would change between them--but what? They hadn't said anything about being together, and he really couldn't assume...but there was something nagging in the back of his mind, something he couldn't shake off. He and Karlee were so different from each other that Emmett didn't know what she was thinking or feeling for that matter, and that drove hi into frustration. Probably since she didn't know what he was thinking either and it was just a vicious cycle of...not really knowing each other to begin with.
Maybe it was mostly Emmett's fault. He closed himself and overall wasn't a kind of person who'd actually say what he was feeling. And maybe Karlee was too, he didn't know, but it was obvious there was some form of miscommunication and unbroken silence. He sighed to himself, unsure of what to make of this. Almost everything he's experienced with Karlee was new and he wasn't sure how to adapt to it. It just seemed unfair to her, after all he had no experience in the whole romance department and she did. Up until now, their status or whatever was unclear. He'd just have to wait, he guessed, when they met up. But he was kind of dreading it--things had just been awkward around the two. Emmett didn't know how to deal with it.
Heading into Maple Hollow actually kind of frightened Emmett. His last experience here had him passed out on the ground. He shuddered at the thought, keeping his eyes forward, searching for Karlee. No, he was not going to ditch her again and he was definitely not going to let his ochlaphobia win over him again. It had already so many times before--but thankfully, today wasn't a busy day. Emmett silently thanked the heavens for that, though his jaw tightened every time a few people passed him by. Deep breaths, just stay calm...
All thoughts vanished when he saw a familiar head of bright, blonde hair. Though, instead of his jaw clenching, it was now his gut. Emmett nodded at her at she greeted him, letting a small smile on his lips form. It was hard not to smile, really, as he looked at Karlee's eyes--but the feeling from before began eating away at him again. "I'm...I'm good, actually," he said calmly, not making a move to go closer to her. Ugh, this was so awkward. Another long moment passed (at least, that's what it seemed like to him) and Emmett finally got it through his thick head, finally asking, "How about you? Good, too, I hope." He flashed Karlee a smile, raising his hand hesitantly before he settled with patting her on the shoulder. How he was ever going to survive this day, he didn't know.
And so Emmett tilted and nodded his head to a random direction, as to invite her for a walk or something. So they could talk about...stuff. And whatever else people did in awkward situations like this.

Awkward was an understatement. Karlee wasn't at all sure what to think of the whole situation. It was... strange, that was for sure. She wasn't usually a shy person, esspecially in this department. But the way in which things seemed to be going was scaring her. She was scared of commitment. In fact, it was probably her biggest fear. She wasn't usually a flighty person, and when she was dedicated to something, she was loyal as loyal could get. And her friends knew that. But when it came to relationships she wasn't quite sure how they where supposed to work. She wasn't quite so sure she was ready for that level of dedication.
Seeing Emmett sort of made her stomach drop, though. He had told her one of his biggest secrets, and she had told him one of hers. Her best friend hardly knew about her fear of water. Her fear of swimming. He knew that she couldn't swim, but didn't know that she felt like she was going to die just being near it. It was kind of sad, really, but everybody had their fears. She smiled at him, though. She wasn't going to be rude, and she was happy to see him. She liked being around him. She was just... more scared and nervous than anything. "Well that's good." She said in response to his answer. She was glad that he was doing well - that was always a relief to hear. "I'm good, too." She said, looking up at him and smiling.
As he nodded for her to follow, she did so, keeping pace beside him - even if her legs where a lot shorter than his. They really didn't know each other that well - at all. Things had moved rather quickly between them - too quickly for two people who didn't really know what they wanted in the first place. Karlee never knew what she wanted. It was like a big vicious cycle of... everything. "So." She said, turning her gaze towards the ground as she kept walking. This was almost too awkward. She didn't even know what to say. "Anything... new?" She asked, glancing up at him, and letting her gaze wander into some of the window shops. She wanted to come right out and ask him what the hell was going on, but she would reserve.

Every now and then, Emmett would glance beside him just to make sure Karlee was still there. Not that he expected her to ditch him or anything; he just…needed to make sure. Especially with the small silence that followed and he opened mouth to say something—anything—to fill in the silence, when she spoke first. Emmett closed his mouth obediently and glanced over, hands shoved into pockets. “Um, not really, actually.” He scratched the back of his head, pursing his lips. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Say something else. Hesitating, Emmett asked, “Just school. Like always…you?” As if that was any better—but at least it filled in the silence. Even for a little bit. He bit his tongue as form of punishment for being such an incapable, unemotional, vocally challenged idiot. Emmett cringed at that thought. How did people even deal with him? Especially with Karlee and the frustration over misunderstandings. And his huge, stubborn pride. He was surprised she hadn’t left when she got the chance. Most people did.
After a short while, Emmett slowed his pace, realizing just how fast he was walking. It was the nerves, he blamed, and he sighed in frustration as he tilted his head up to look up at the sky. “So,” he started, eyes not lowering. “What now?” The question rang in his head and he furrowed his eyebrows. It held so many different meanings that it was impossible to distinguish which one he actually meant to ask. What now? Were they…something to each other? Of course. Did that mean that they were going to have a happy ever after and run off into the sunset? Of course not. His gut told him that much. And so Emmett hesitated for a moment, his hands clenching the fabric in his pockets and he finally glanced down at Karlee, stopping his footsteps altogether. He stared seriously down at her, his lips moving but not saying anything. What could he say? ‘Hey, do I mean anything to you?’ No. Just no. He could barely comprehend in his head what Karlee was to him. Could he even hear her answer? The question lingered on his lips, but his voice wouldn’t speak. So he took a few breaths, his eyes still on hers. “What…” Emmett bit his lips, taking one hand out of his pocket. “What are we, exactly?” There. The damage was done. Emmett felt like crawling into a hole, back into his cynical little corner he dug up for himself.
He waited. And soon after, he grew impatient. So instead, he cracked a brief grin, one that barely lasted a second on his lips, not even surviving in his eyes. “Uh, forget I said anything. Nevermind.” Emmett felt his word vomit coming up and he forced his to gaze to falter, continuing his previous steps before he stopped. He didn’t even know where he was going, to be honest. And this time, he didn’t check to make sure Karlee was following him, because he felt guilty.
The answer—was it even important to him anymore?
