Sometimes Joanna didn't understand people. At some points, she didn't understand such the big clash between the Fires/Thunders and Waters/Earth. Sure, she understood where your element is decided on your personality and yada yada, and she understood that a lot of the personalities crashed. But take away the powers, turn the elementals into normal people, if two people meet and they have fun hanging out and don't clash right away, then they're acquaintances. And then soon after they became friends and closer. But then take those two people, who can easily become the best friends, make one a Fire, and one a Water, and then they instantly will hate each other because of the standards that are set to them.
"What if I wasn't a Water?" she asked him quizzically. "What if I was exactly who I am now. I looked the same, I had the same personality and qualities, I had the same past and history, but instead of being able to work with water, I worked with Fire? Or thunder? Heck, even Wind? Then we could be friends. Then we could stop in the hallway when we see each other and talk, and we could become friends. But because they tell us we're supposed to hate each other, we do."
The water around Joanna began cooling down as she talked, not something she meant to do on purpose, but something that just happened. "If I see you in the hallway, I'll probably say hi.
You can either make a snarky comment because I'm a water and I'm three years younger than you, or you can completely ignore me and then make snarky comments to your friends underneath your breath. "Or, you could be mature about it, not care about the 'petty wars and squabbles' as you say you don't, and say hi back."
