The water common room didn't hold many people in it. There was maybe one or two people huddled somewhere studying or chatting away, but to Joanna, it was as good as empty. Pretty absent mindedly, she looked up through the glass ceiling. She watched the water move about, and some fished swim to and fro. It was beautiful to her, and she felt like she could stare at it forever.
And that's exactly something she planned to do. She sat down and then laid back, staring up at the ceiling. The moving water threw the light around the room, making the view even more magnificent to Joanna. Most people would lay down there and stare and think. Except, Joanna didn't want to think. All she wanted to do was just lay there, and let the view take her in.
At some point she started humming to a song by Relient K. It wasn't soon before she started mouthing the words, and sort of singing them in a hushed voice. "...Yet I know you'll be there 'cause you'll know I'll want you to be there and we'll say hello. As you're smiling in love and we'll sigh so relieved, I believe because we'll both know by tonight we'll feel normal again..."

Gale was just getting back from his little... adventure with Yeager. He hadn't ever smoked weed before. Hell, he hadn't ever smoked anything before. And he probably shouldn't have smoked quite that much for his first time, either. But he felt oddly more relaxed than he ever had. He had went up to the dorms for a little bit, but after only a little while decided to make his way back down to the common room. He wasn't as high as he had been early, as it was starting to wear off, but it was still obvious that he wasn't exactly sober. Gale was always happy, but yeah - this made him a lot happier.
I understand why everybody loved everybody in the seventies now. He thought to himself as he made his way slowly down the stairs and into the common room. He glanced up at the ceiling. The water was oddly calming, soothing. He had his hands shoved in the pockets of his sweatshirt. He had changed his clothes when he got back - so that the smell of the smoke wouldn't be evident on his clothes. It wasn't exactly legal to be smoking around the school but hell - who gived a crap. He wasn't sure he would make a habit of this, but for a one time thing - it wasn't too bad. He took a deep breath of the fresh air as he stopped walking, letting his wavering gaze rest on the fish above him. "Beautiful." He almost whispered to himself.
He heard a noise then. Well, it wasn't really a noise, but somebody singing. He knew the song, and started humming along to it a little loudly. He made his way over to one of the big arm chairs and sat down in it, immediately stretching out over it. "Hey." He said, turning his drunken gaze over to Joanna. She was a couple years younger than him, but he knew her. Of course, he knew everybody in his element. It was his job to know them all. He couldn't be a very good leader if he didn't know the people in his element. However, he wasn't being a very good leader being high right now either. But it was wearing off. "What's up Jo- Anna." He said, smiling at her. His words where a little slowed, but he hardly realized them. He put his arms behind his head and sighed, looking back up at the ceiling. "How many fishes do you think live in there?" Of course, his thinking wasn't quite right either. But hey, who was?

When Joanna heard the presence of someone else, she immediately stopped singing. She knew she wasn't bad at it, but it was something she was conscious of. It was something that she had a hard time doing in front of other people. Undressing in front of other people, she was fine with, but for some reason she could not bring herself to let a few notes out in front of other people. She guessed it was because it was something her brother had always taken to teasing her about.
When she stopped, the tune continued on. Whoever had entered knew the song, and wasn't to shabby at staying on key with it either. She sat up and looked at who it was, but then relaxed when she recognized the water leader. "Oh, hey Gale," she said, still sort of in a dream like trance, staring up at the water. . "Oh I don't know, I suppose-," she stopped abruptly, sat up, and looked at him."Are you high, Gale?"

The thing about Gale was that he was silly and outgoing whether sober or under the influence of some kind of substance. In the past month, he had polluted his body with more crap than he had throughout his whole life. Suddenly his steady diet of fast food was starting to look healthy compared to the crap he had gotten into lately. However, everybody experimented right? He was just hitting that stage before college. College was where most people seemed to experiment, but he as glad to have a head above the competiton. He wasn't going to make a habit of this - of course not. Esspecially not on school nights. He had an A average that he had to maintain. He was lucky -he had an avid social life and good grades. His mother wouldn't except anything less than an A. An A- in math she would consider like a C, but he wasn't very good at math. So she understood.
However, he had slacked off on his study habits lately. It just sort of happened. He laughed a little bit as Joanna talked though, coming out with a bit of a snort. Again, it just happened. Had he been sober he probably wouldn't have sat there staring at the ceiling without answering her. He was planning on answering her, but his brain seemed to be not connected to his mouth. "Noo...." He finally replied, laughing again and waving off her comment. He was, of course, but he wasn't about to say that. Esspecially to one of the younger classmen. He sighed and continued to stare up at the ceiling, rotating his ankles as he did so. "So really. The fish. Have you counted them? I bet theres lots of them..." He watched as a few fish swam overhead. "One... two... two..." He stopped and blinked a few times, obviously losing focus of what he was doing. "What where we talking about?" He said, looking over at her and blinking a few times.

Joanna listened to his voice, and smiled. He was silly, and it was funny listening to him talk. The made herself stand up and walk over to him. It was like he didn't even notice she had stood up and hovered over him, he still stared up at the ceiling and attempted to count the fish- but once he got to two, it became a challenge to him.
She took his hands and pulled him to his feet. He was about a little less than a head taller than her, and swayed when he was footed. She looked into his eyes, a little glazed over, but slowly become unfuzzy, and half smiled. "Don't lie to me Gale Harrison. Now come back from Cloud Nine."
Joanna snapped her fingers in front of his eyes, trying to get him to focus on one thing, which he seemed to have a very hard time doing. She realized as long as he was going to act like this, she might as well have some fun with it. She thought for a minute of what to say, and thought of the type of person Gale is, and had an aha moment. "Gale, if you don't go now you're going to fail your science test!"

He was still pretty out of it as she pulled him to his feet. He was a bit unsteady and swayed a little, but still had a goofy smile plastered on his face. It was like magic, this stuff. But it was wearing off a little bit more minute by minute. He wasn't sure if he was going to have a hang over or something after this. Alcohol gave him a nasty hangover. But he really had no warning about the pot. "I don't think there are nine clouds up here." He said, turning his gaze back upwards. "Just fish." He said, laughing a little bit. "The little bastards won't hold still so I can count them!" He said, almost as if he was shocked that fish wouldn't hold still. If only he where sober he would have known that what he was saying was dumb. It was like waiting for a stop light to turn green.
He went cross eyed for a moment as she snapped her fingers in front of his eyes. "Whoa." He mumbled, blinking a few times to get his eyes uncrossed. This was certainly a strange feeling. At her next comment, Gale felt reality setting in a little bit. "Science test? Where?" He had a yearning feeling that he couldn't be late for it, but he didn't remember having a science test. However, he was having trouble remembering his middle name right now so that wasn't unfamiliar. "Why don't you come with me!" He said, smiling brightly before linking his arm with hers and proceeding to start pulling her towards the door. "Goodbye!" He said, waving upwards at the ceiling towards the fishes. "Where are we going again?" His mind was pretty much shot at this point, and he wasn't even sure where he was going at this point.

Joanna couldn't help but giggle at how much attention Gale was giving to the fish. She didn't really know him that well, but she knew enough he would probably have talked like this whether he was high or not. But there was something about his voice, the way he drew out his words, and how he seemed to have almost no conscious mind what he was doing or saying. "They aren't going to stay still, they're fish and they're born to swim."
She couldn't contain her outburst of laugh with his evident confusion on the test. She was slightly surprised when he was tugging her after him, insisting that she came with him. She knew it was just the weed talking though. There was the part of her that wanted to play with him more and see what he would do out of the common room, but then decided against. So she pulled him back and said, "We're not going anywhere. If you go out there and they catch you high, you might lose you're leadership position."
She brought him back into the middle of the room and sat him down on the ground, leaning against one of the comfy chairs. She sat across from him, and had an idea. "Stay here," she said, as she ran, jumped, and skipped to her room, grabbed something from one of her dresser drawers, and brought it back down with her, muttering, "Jeez, where did you even get this weed? I want some."
She reached into a little plastic baggy, grabbed a handful of little orange snacks, and threw the tiny goldfish at him. "Here, can you count these fish?" She asked, sitting on the floor with him.

"I was born to swim, too." Gale said, amusedly. "Does that mean I'm a fish?" He asked, actually pondering the question. He had been told before that he was like a fish the way he rarely ever came out of the water. That was just him though. He really lived up to the name of a water elemental. Even though he enjoyed swimming even before he knew was an elemental. So he was pretty sure it was probably just hereditary. His father was a water elemental, and his mother was an earth - so he probably surely got it from his fathers side.
Every time he thought of his father though it made him sad, so he tried to avoid it. He hadn't really ever paid so much attention to the fish in the ceiling before, but for some reason - when ever you where high, everything seemed so much more interesting. Watching paint dry could be interesting. Or you would just try to hug the wall and end up covered in wet paint. You know, which ever came first. "How did you know I was high?" He asked, looking at her, blinking a few times. His memory was horrible right now, too. He wouldn't remember most of this conversation come morning, most likely. "Right. So we should hide out here so they don't find me." He said, with one quick nod. After all, in the water dorms - it was only him that he would have to worry about catching himself. What a poor leader.
He was pretty much a puppet right now when he was in this state, so when she took him and sat him down on the ground - he did so. He exhaled loudly and leaned his head back against the chair - turning his attention back to the fish. He found it funny that he never realized how fantastic those things where. "What do you think would happen if the ceiling ever broke?" He asked, not realizing that Joanna wasn't around. She had already left to skip off to her room, but that didn't mean he wouldn't still talk. He didn't even notice that she didn't reply. "Those poor fish." He said, in an almost choked up voice.
When she came back, and asked about the weed, he laughed a little. "I can't tell you thaaaat." He snorted and rolled his eyes. He wasn't about to rat his friend out. Even though it was actually Yeager's Nana's , but same difference. He flinched a little bit as she threw - goldfish at him? "ooh." He said, in an almost transfixed voice. He started picking up the goldish off the floor and cupping them in his hand, before putting them in his mouth. His high that he had now was more of just an after effect. The actual high was pretty well worn off - but he still had the after shock that wouldn't go away until he went to sleep. "Keeping stashes of fishes huh? Fancy."

At his first question, she actually stopped and thought about it. She would never have believed a few years ago that she would be an elemental, would it be much of a surprise if all the waters who loved to swim ended up having secret gills that sprouted on their skin when they turned 21? Probably not. She considered mentioning the theory to Gale, but at this state right now, mentioning something out of the ordinary probably wasn't wise.
"It's not hard to tell," she giggled. For most people from afar, it probably actually would have been, again with High Gale and Sober Gale being actually so much alike. But looking into his eyes, and with some of her experiences, she knew right away that he had walked in high.
When she came back, she knew he hadn't stopped talking. She wondered if he was sober, would he have stopped talking if she vanished for a couple of minutes. She shrugged internally, deciding she'd have to test that sometime.
She tentatively takes one of the fish snacks of the ground and pops it into her mouth. "I keep them around in my room for when I get too hungry. They're an ok low cal snack, I guess. Better then getting so hungry that I loose control and eat a whole lot." Joanna felt odd talking about this. It wasn't something she would normally share with just anyone, but she felt good getting it out, and she knew it was something that he would more than likely just forget by the next hour.

Having never really spent too much time around people that where high, Gale didn't really know how to tell. I mean, there where the obvious signs. Slurring your words, red eyes, the smell - but he hadn't really looked in a mirror since he got back - so he didn't know. Nor would he really care. He was already starting to feel tired - or rather, he had been tired. Whatever weed he got from Yeager was sure some good stuff. "There's nothing wrong with eating a whole lot. Healthy appetites are good appetites." He said, laughing a little. Low cal meant nothing to him. "Then again, I have a pretty steady diet of fast food so.." It was true. He was far from being healthy at all. Who needed to be healthy, right? He figured the small amount of exercise he did from swimming was enough to keep him healthy. Either that or he would die from a heart attack by the time he was twenty. And the scary thing was - he was almost eighteen. Twenty was not that far away. It's scary how fast time flies.
He didn't connect her previous statement with any kind of eating disorder, so it didn't worry him that much. He was well educated with school subjects, but when it came to stuff like that he was pretty much clueless. It was just the way his knowledge fell. He continued to eat a few of the gold fish, examining each one before he did so. "You don't think it's creepy that things have faces? Seems almost like cannibalism." He said, snorting and popping another one in his mouth. It was true, though. He was just talking before about how much he was like a fish - now here he was eating gold fish with faces. After another one, he groaned and rolled his head back against the couch. "Well I think it's about time for bed." He said, before shakily pushing himself off the floor. "So I guess I will see you around. Night!" He said, smiling at her and waving before turning and heading up the stairs to his dorm.
END THREAD.
