In and out, in and out. Dani forced deep breaths into her lungs as she focused at the lake. One would think that she’s working on her newfound power. Others would think that she’s freezing out and trying to keep warm. In all actuality, it’s neither; she just plain old nervous. She’s always like this when she starts a new school, whether it be a new year term, or part of a new semester. Now her nerves are sky high because she’s in an unfamiliar place with people that have different, if not, the same abilities as her. That should relax her; heck that should excite her, finding people like herself, but deep down she’s a bit worried. She can’t help but think What if they don’t like me? Will I fit in? Can I be myself? Will I make any friends? Sarah said not to worry and that everything will be alright. Well, it’s easier for her to say that. She’s never been to a school with kids that have powers.
She sighed and dug her hand in the nearly frozen sand. Looking at the lake, she remembered the promise Michael gave to her. He promised he would teach her how to ice skate and other activities that normal kids would do. She’s always wanted to learn how to play the piano. They had one of those at one of the many orphanages she’s been to. Luckily for her she has a musical ear and can play a song just from listening to it once, yet, she doesn’t know how to properly place her hands. Who knew that the hand placements mattered? Playing with two fingers works better for her better. She was mocking the same gesture when another wave of nausea hit her. Looking at her watch, she had an hour before class starts, so she decided to continue the deep breathing with her knees bent up and her head on top of them. She wrapped her hand together under them and started to rock back and forth, feeling the wind play with her hair.

Elaine usually stayed away from the lake. She had this horrid feeling that the moment she went near it some stupid kid would push her into it, and then she'd drown. Or she'd take a miss step, or a big wave would come and swallow her up, pull her into the airless abyss and hold her there. Until she drowned. So she normally stayed very far away from it. It did, however, have a very nice scent to it, and if she got marginally close she could carry the scent to her on her wind. She was just doing this when she felt the girl curled up on the ground with her wind. Curious, she had the breeze curl back and touch the young girl again. She was shivering. She didn't look happy.
Disregarding her common sense, Elaine stepped carefully toward the girl. She kept a constant wind about her as she approached, making completely sure that nothing would get in her the water against her will. Once she was a few feet away, she stopped, shifting on her feet a little from nerves. If she'd had sight, she'd be glancing at the water with wary looks. As it was, her expression was switching from calm to nervous and back with little pause.
”Hey....” Elaine started quietly, doing her bet to make her voice friendly and soothing. Her sightless eyes were staring straight past the girl, but her wind was cradling the girl as it made lazy passes around. ”What's wrong? Are you ok?”

Dani felt someone approach her before they asked her the questions. Turning around, she eyed another girl. She looked a little older than her, but that was not what caught her attention. She had wind around her as if they were one. Could she be a wind user too? That perked the young girl's eyes up with excitement and awe. She's never seen anyone like herself before, so this is probably one of the most exciting moments of her life. Calm yourself, Dani. You don't even know if she has the same ability as you. Better ask her just to make sure.
She stood up and brushed the dirt off of her. She was focusing on the striking force around her she was about to ask her the question when she realized that she hasn’t even answered her questions. Clearing her throat, she answered. "Well…I guess. Nothing’s out of the ordinary." Ordinary? Pfft, that so does not describe you. She shook her head at the thought and continued. "I’m…fine. I’m like this all the time. I’m always nervous when I go to a new school. Now that I’m in a different country…I’m even more nervous." She grew quiet after the last statement. Looking down, she tried to think of a right way to ask this girl the question. Ok, ummm. “Do you have wind powers?” No, that won’t work. What if I’m the only one in the school who has this power? That would be really lonely. That could be just the wind rapping around her like any other cold winter day. She burrowed her hands in her coat pocket even further, and played with the dirt with her shoe. Why don’t I just start out with a normal greeting? That could be a personal question that she doesn’t want to answer. Shivering a bit, she said" Hi. I’m Dannica, or, Dani for short. I’m…new here, if you haven’t already figured it out." She added a small smile, adding on to the insecurity. "Umm…What’s your name?”

Elaine tilted her head a little when the girl stood and said nothing was wrong. No.... She said nothing was out of the ordinary. That didn't necessarily mean nothing was wrong. The blind girl focused on the girl in front of her, pushing the irrational fear to the back of her mind once again and smiling sweetly. Her eyes didn't follow the girl when she stood up, and as a result Elaine's face was angled downwards.
"Ah." She said, nodding with understanding. This was a freshman. She should have been able to tell from the maturity of the voice and the girl's size, but she'd been distracted. Elaine noted that the girl sounded extremely ill-at-ease, and from her wind she could easily tell that this girl was being very fidgety. Elaine had been nervous when she'd first come, too. She'd been shaking so much she could barely walk, and a random teacher had to help her where she needed to go. That day had to have been one of the worst days of her life.
Elaine's expression grew softer when the girl introduced herself. Dani was scared out of her wits, wasn't she? After a second, Elaine answered with a soft voice, "Hello, Dani. I'm Elaine." Her wind started to die down--she didn't want to tired herself out, and she had not memorized the current condition of their immediate surroundings. So there was no worry as this point that she would fall in the lake and drown. She raised her head a bit, "I know the first few days are the most grueling, but you'll be ok. What's your power?"
She hoped inwardly that the girl was not a thunder type. First impressions had nothing of that sort, but that little tribe didn't need another time bomb. Thunders were the hardest for Elaine to deal with, because they were quiet--the hardest for her to read. She held her hand out toward Dani, a hesitant smile on her lips. "Would you help me back toward the academy?" Elaine knew the way, but it looked like this girl needed some sort of a distraction. Some task--even menial--would probably help with the gnawing feeling that just waiting gave a person.

She let out a sigh of relief. She didn’t seem like the mean older girls they show on television. “It’s nice to meet you, Elaine. The freshman then relaxed her shoulders a little when Elaine told her that it’ll be alright. She nodded in agreement, then she asked the question Dani wanted to ask her: What her power was. She sighed, grateful that she wasn’t in the wrong school. Well, there goes one answered questions out of many of mine. Lowering her voice, she answered ”My power is wind. I would show you but…I’m not really that good at it.”
Elaine then asked her to walk back to the academy. She nodded and then stood beside her, waiting for her to advance when she realized Elaine’s focus was off. She looked closely at her eyes and came to the conclusion that Elaine was in fact, blind. That’s the reason why she never really looked directly at me. But…where is her walking stick…or a dog…or something? She decided she won’t ask this girl many questions. She tends to ask a lot of them, and in turn, people would get aggravated with her, and she didn’t want that. This girl’s nice to her so far.
Her disability is probably the reason she wanted to walk with her back to the academy. Either that, or she wanted to know her a little more. Accepting both ideas, she wrapped an arm around her, and started walking towards the school. This was a first for her; she usually would not make advancements like this towards others. But, she’s here to change, right? Smiling a little, her nerves started to loosen up as they advanced closer to the school.
Deciding to make the first move for a conversation for once, she asked Elaine ”So, what is your power? Is it wind like mine, because I saw the wind around you as if…you know, you could control it or…something.” That would be great if she had the same ability as her. For some reason, being around this older girl comforted her somehow.

The blind girl nodded politely when the girl said it was nice to meet her. She was pleased that the new girl was at least a nice person—goodness knows they needed some more nice people in the academy—but she was also a little alarmed at the apparently flightiness of the girl. Her tones were shaking, and her movements were hesitant, like she truly didn't know whether she was doing something that was ok. Dani didn't seem to be extremely self assured, and someone like that could be chewed up and spit out in a school like this. Hopefully she'd be able to make up for it with her ability with her power.
Wind? Elaine's brow raised, but she stayed silent for now. At least that meant that if Dani had trouble, she'd see Elaine every night in the dorms. If anything really went wrong she'd at least have one person she'd be willing to talk to. Elaine remembered what it had been like her first few months—hell on earth, with no one she knew well enough to talk to about her many problems. She wouldn't wish that on anyone, of any element.
She jumped a little when Dani put an arm around her. A mixture of surprise and amusement flowed into her expression as she halted the girl's progress and gently pulled her arm around. She linked her arm in Dani's then, feeling down the forearm to the hand and then taking a hold of it. ”This way you can guide me without tripping me from close proximity.” Elaine said, smiling to keep the girl from feeling bad, ”I can't see where your feet are, so it's better to keep them out of my way completely.”
They kept walking in silence for several seconds, then. Elaine was just about to open her mouth and offer her own power when Dani guessed it correctly. The blind girl grinned and nodded, ”Yes, I am a wind elemental. There are several of us, the wind elementals. I'll warn you now that while we all live together, there isn't much cohesion in the group.” She tilted her head, a slightly sadder expression on her face, ”You'll find friends based on who you get along with. And if anything big happens between the two sides, you might have to choose between some of them.”

She saw the surprised look Elaine gave her when she slipped her arm through hers. Well, she was surprised herself; she would have never done anything like that before coming here. She heard Elaine’s comment about the guiding thing. She didn’t think of it that way, she just wanted to be friendly. “Right,” was all that she replied as they continued onward towards the school.
She smiled when she confirmed her power. Yes! Another wind user! Maybe she can help me deal with it. She had so much control over it the first time I saw her. What? No cohesion? “But…we’re all of the same element. Why don’t we unite as a group? Are the other elements like this, or is it just wind?” She slowly disappointed her. She thought that they would be sort of like a family. She was secretly hoping for one since she left her new one to come here. “That’s not fair…” she said silently to herself.
Finding friends, with other elementals? She just hopes that there isn’t a clique thing going on. But in the back of her mind, she knew there was one. “So, what element runs the school, if there is one?” She was starting to loosen up with this girl. She guesses it’s the fact that she shares the same element as her and that she came out here, concerned for her well-being. Not that many people in the world, in her did that. Her lifetime showed that.

Elaine's expression grew a little amused at Dani's response. It seemed she didn't really put much thought into how much different things might be if she couldn't see anything. When Elaine was younger, it had felt like every step could be a step from a ledge into a deep chasm, and there was no way she'd ever be able to tell. Sometimes she still felt like that, but it helped that she'd been living here for over two years. She'd learned a whole lot of the place by heart, and now her only troubles were the things that moved. Like the people.
She bit her lip, tilting her head when the girl beside her sounded very confused. That was one thing that had been different for Elaine. She hadn't been expecting any real unity on any of the element's fronts, so it wasn't a letdown when she found out about the nature of wind. Taking a deep breath, she explained, ”You'll learn about this soon enough, but each element is decided by two things: genes and personality. Waters are sociable and pranksters, earth are kind and peacemakers, fire are quick tempered and powerful, and thunders are quiet and vengeful.”
The blind girl shrugged a bit, ”Obivously it's a lot more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it. The thing about wind is that we don't really have a set personality. We get people of all types in our dorms, and some don't mesh very well. We find our own friends as we get to know them—people of any or every element.” And people tolerated the wind element among their own because wind had no weakness. No weakness meant it didn't matter who they were with or who they were up against, they would always be a valuable ally. A lot of that seemed to go out the window, though, when it was a blind wind student they were considering.
Her sharp ears caught the muttering of the other, and she bowed her head a little bit. ”You could think of it like that.” She conceded. But then she smiled, ”Or you could consider that you get to start out with no natural enemies, nor weaknesses. You'll have an easier first year than most people, because no one knows what side you're going be on yet—if any.” Elaine wasn't quite sure why she was talking so much. She felt a little kinship with this girl. Not to mention the girl seemed both kind and extremely naïve. Which was both cute and a little concerning—naivety was not always the safest thing in this school.
Elaine shrugged, ”Well, not really. Other than wind, every element has a weakness to another element. There are no popular cliques or anything like that. But thunder and fire have formed a sort of alliance, and so has water and earth. And they are decidedly opposed to one another.” With a few exceptions, but normally only a very few. And normally only on the side of earth, who tended to try and think the best of everyone.

Really? She thought carefully on Elaine’s explanation about powers and genes. She wondered why and how she ended up with wind; not that she didn’t want it. “Ok, I get it. That’s very interesting though, I must’ve received the wind genes because I’m hardly social at all.”
Then Elaine went on to explain the union, or lack of, of wind people. “I guess that’s understandable. I still think it’s not fair though, but that’s the world for you. I’ve come to that realization a long time ago.” She chuckled harshly. With that being said, it lead her to past memories…harsh ones.
”Are you excited, Dani?” One of her good friends, Emily, asked her that while Dani was packing her things, getting ready to leave the orphanage for good. “Of course I am! I’m about to have a real family for the first time!” The girl finished packing quickly; there wasn’t that much she owned anyway. Closing her suitcase, she hopped up on her movable bed and looked sadly at her friend. “I just wish you could come with me. I don’t like leaving you all by yourself.” The older girl just shrugged it off as it were nothing. “Oh, don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. Hey, someone needs to look after these rough-necks. And who’s better at that than me?” She made a pose, showing off her “muscles” and both girls burst into laughter. The laughter was cut short when a knock came from the door. Dani gave her friend an excited look and grabbed her suitcase. She opened a door to reveal the mistress with a somber look on her face. Her instincts told her something bad had happened, but she kept the smile on face anyway.
“Hello Dannica.” The head mistress said. She’s the only one in the building who refused to call her Dani. “Hi. Is my new mom here yet?” She asked excitedly, her big brown eyes wide with happiness. Saying that, the mistress sighed and sat on her bed. She looked over at Emily and asked her for a moment of privacy. “Sure thing, I’m hungry anyways.” As she walked out, she gave Dani a look that she didn’t understand until she got older. It was a look of pity and…understanding: A look that showed that she knew what was going on because she herself has gone through it. She raised a curious eyebrow at her, then turned to the mistress. “So…what’s wrong?” The mistress wrapped an arm around her shoulder and spoke: “Ms. Evans won’t be coming today.” Dani nodded and asked “Well, when is she coming?” That was when the mistress gave her the same look Emily did. Her smile faded, then she asked her what was going on. “Ms. Evans…changed her mind at the last minute. She called the office late last night and told us. You were asleep, otherwise I would have told you then. I am so sorry Dannica.” What? She…changed her mind, but why? She looked away from the old woman and turned to look out the window. The little eight-year-old’s future life was just crushed. All because of a change of heart. She half felt someone rubbing her back, too shocked to acknowledge anything at all. The mistress said something, then left the room. She didn’t hear it, too busy listening to the thoughts in her head trying to explain the situation to her, all while never leaving her eyes out of the window. She felt a tear leave her eye, which landed on the suitcase. Her focus was on the leaf that was drifting through the wind, looking so free. "That was almost me…"
Getting back to the present, she heard Elaine talk about weaknesses. She noticed that her mind drifted to the past, unintentionally ignoring her. Oh, how rude of me. She nodded a reply and continued the walk towards school, this time paying attention to Elaine this time.

Elaine nodded slowly, her tone even as she answered, ”Yes...you must have.” She didn't much feel like trying to explain the intricacies of elemental powers. The girl would eventually learn the error she'd just made through the meeting of other elementals and the classes she was to take this term. After all, thunders were very often anti-social, or at the very least rather quiet. And earths did have a good chance of being quietly kind and considerate, not outspoken at all. In fact, they had the most shy people in their group of all the elemental groups.
The blind girl angled her head toward the girl, listening closely and gaining a pensive expression. There was a deal of bitterness in Dani's voice, the way she said her words and the words she chose. The way she dismissed it as simply as that made Elaine shake her head sadly. Ah, how young the world produced disillusionment these days. Elaine hadn't gotten to the point where she'd been able to pass life's hardships off that easily until she'd been closer to fifteen. But she'd certainly stopped thinking of the world as a wonderful place long before then.
Elaine was going to speak again, but she sensed that Dani was lost in thought. There was no real reason for her to feel like this, but she just knew. A different feel wafted from those who gave you their full attention. So she kept walking in time with the freshman, occupied with her own thoughts. There was no anger or annoyance from the sudden loss of attention—Elaine wasn't like that. This was a nice enough girl, and Elaine didn't much rely on other people's conversation to function.
Finally, Dani seemed to be paying attention to her again. Her pace changed slightly, speeding back to what it had been before whatever thoughts had left her vacant. And Elaine heard the rustling of the girl's hair as she turned her head, presumably toward the older girl. She dipped her head for a second, then brought it back up with a smile, ”Do you know where the wind dormitories are, Dani? And the password? Or have you seen the teachers yet?”
She brought a breeze toward then to blow the hair out of her face. It was cool in the cold winter morning, but her hair had been tickling her nose. Elaine supposed she could pull the warmer air from very high in the air, but that would be too much work. ”Well, I don't imagine a freshman and a junior would have any of the same classes, but if you ever need me, we'll be sharing dorms. You can come to me for anything, ok?”

She snapped her attention back to Elaine when she asked her attention. Looking up at the nearing school, she shrugged. “Umm, I’ve been there once…and I sorta remember…?” This place was so huge, how could she remember where the dorms are? She accidently stumbled at this place, thinking it was the front entrance to the school. She knew she was bound to get lost in this place.
“Password…what was the password…” I’m pretty sure it has a “c” in it… what the heck is it? “Umm I think I left the password in my back pack. I wrote it down and left it in there.” Smart move there… “And I haven’t met any of my teachers yet. Hopefully we have enough time to get to my dorm before school starts.”
What Elaine said next put a smile on her face. “Thanks. I’ll need that.” That’s exactly what she needed: someone to go to for help. She’ll definitely need help in a school like this. With her being a freshman, she’ll reaaally need help. “But I do have my schedule in my pocket.” With her free hand, she dug in there and pulled out her schedule. She released her arm from Elaine’s for a moment so she could read and hold the paper. “Let’s see…English is my first subject of the day. Mrs. Hanson. Do you know of her?” She slipped her arm through hers again and began walking.

Elaine smiled. She understood. Obviously, troubles knowing where things were came naturally to her. She was sympathetic, but mostly she was just amused. It was this way with the beginning of every term, with the newbies being caught after curfew outside their dorms either because they couldn't find them or they didn't remember the passwords. Speaking of passwords.... Dani's next words actually made Elaine laugh. ”Let me guess, you left you backpack in the dorms?” She sure hoped so, considering it was the only place that it was guaranteed not to be messed with.
”Come on.” She said, picking up her pace a little bit. ”Classes start in less than an hour and you need to know your way back to the dorms. Come with me, and I'll show you the way.” They were basically at the entrance to the academy now, so she allowed Dani to release her arm. When the girl tried to grab her arm again, Elaine dodged it and found the girl's hand with her own. Her free hand stretched out in front of her to send a light gust of wind at the academy so she'd know whether she was going the right way or not.
Letting her arm fall to her side, she nodded. She stuck her tongue out a little, too. But only for a brief moment, ”Yes, how could I forget her? She's a fine teacher, I suppose, but English was never a subject that I could enjoy. First year and all, her's was one of my least favorite classes I've ever taken.” She paused for a few moments, then said reassuringly, ”But my problems were mostly because I'm blind. She's a nice teacher, so you shouldn't have much trouble.”

She laughed along with her. Yup. Typical Dani. Too nervous to think straight, so she left her password to the place that she needed to get in to retrieve it. She shook her head in shame while smiling. “I guess I was too worked up that I didn’t think straight…It’s a common thing I do.” Well, it was in a safe spot, right? No one else can get it the dorm without the password, and each individual room has a lock on the door. She did remember to bring her key though. She wasn’t that forgetful.
She walked a little faster when the elder girl picked up the pace. Yeah, time was going by quickly and she needed to get her stuff…and fast. She’s just glad Elaine knew where she was going. She felt her switch from her arm to join hands with her. Okay, that was cool too. She looked around and started to see familiar things. “Oh hey, I know where I am now…sorta.” She felt the gust of wind and knew immediately that it came from Elaine. She figured out a while back that she uses her power to help guide her, but she needed to confirm it. “Hey, do you use your power to help guide you? If so that would be so cool!” She really did think it was cool. One day, she wants to learn that. That, and many other ways to use wind to her advantage. A sigh of relief escaped her mouth as she heard the review of her new teacher. She was glad that she’s nice. Her last English teacher wasn’t. “That’s a relief. I don’t really care for English either, but at least it’s not math.” Speaking of which, she looked back at her schedule to look for the subject. “Ugh pre-algebra is right after. I hate math. And it’s with a…Mr. Gold. Is he okay? Sorry that I’m asking you about all of these teachers…” She felt like a pest. She promised right after this she’ll keep her mouth shut and let Elaine continue the talking.

Elaine laughed, ”It's alright. Freshmen do stuff like that every year.” Truth. Dani was no different, Elaine had been no difference. Only she'd been furious several times because people who were trying to help her would offer to write things down for her so she could remember, or something like that. She'd never forgotten passwords, having already trained herself to remember things like that just from hearing them. But she'd forgotten directions, several times. Or gotten them wrong. Or not been able to tell how many doors she'd passed. Once a particularly ditzy freshman had asked her what color the door to the library was.
Elaine's expression became shocked when Dani guess what she could do with her powers correctly. No one had ever just guessed that before. Most people didn't even think it was possible until they met her and she convinced them she wasn't bluffing, or in denial. A little excitement of her own rose up as she wondered whether this girl was another rare exception, only able to guess because she had the ability as well. But....no. She hadn't even known that there would be other wind elementals at the academy. How could she know that something like that would be weird. Utterly confused, Elaine just decided to speak.
”How on earth did you figure that out?” She asked, angling her face toward the girl, ”Yes, I can. I can feel what it feels, and that allows me to guide myself. But how did you....Can you do it, too?” It seemed unlikely, now that she thought about it again. Her teachers, all rather rapt themselves by the fact that she could do something so different, had concluded that it was a mutation in the gene that was directly connected to the fact she was blind. An adaptation, of sorts. Or something like that. She hadn't really understood.
Elaine tilted her head a bit. ”Math's not so bad.” She said. ”At least things are always the same way, all the time, and you aren't ever surprised by things being switched around like crazy.” The blind girl just shook her head when Dani apologized. It wasn't a problem. She'd offered herself up as someone who could help with things, right? So she would help with what she could. Mr Gold, was it.... ”Well, he's a hard teacher. Teaches several grades of math. But as much as he expects effort, he's also willing to put effort into making sure you understand the material with what time he has. He's easy to understand, compared to the other teachers. Never just puts stuff on the board and expects you to copy it down on your own time.”

”I’m glad I’m not the only one who does it then.” That was good. She has this bad fear of being alone, or the only one doing something. Guess spending most of your life in an orphanage does that to most kids. She remembered a time when a boy at the orphanage had a birthday party. Everyone had a great time, until the music started. Dani loved the song that was being played at the time, so she decided to dance to it. For about a minute, she didn’t realize she was the only one dancing until she heard snickering behind her. The other kids were laughing at her and her face reddened with embarrassment. Yeah, she doesn’t do to well when she’s by herself in something.
When she guessed Elaine’s ability, she gave her a look of shock. Uh oh. What did I do now? I knew I should’ve stayed out of her business. She stumbled an apology when Elaine asked her how she guessed. “Well, it’s sorta weird.” She grew quiet, trying to gather the right words to say, and not sound foolish at the same time. “Umm wind, to me, is unique to the user. Uhh, when I use my wind, I know it’s mine because it’s a part of me. It’s almost as if the wind shares the same…genetics…DNA… as the person using it. For you, I could tell it was yours because it…carried the same scent as you. Natural wind doesn’t have a scent; it’s free and it smells like nature.” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “I don’t know if I’m making any sense.”
“Oh boy. Well, I hope there’s tutoring available.” She never really looked at math that way. It does stay constant. It’s one of the things in the universe that never changes. Sure biology might change, and so does English, but not math. “Thanks for the info. That’s great to know.” They were starting to near the hall changes into the different buildings for the four elements. “This is starting to look familiar now.”
