Avery held his breath, his fist full of grass as he clenched his eyes in order to block out unwanted memories. He remembered the burns, the helplessness, and overall—the pain. Physically and emotionally. He breathed through his nose to keep himself calm. There was no use in making a fuss over something that happened over a decade ago, but the intensity in their eyes—it scared him. Avery didn’t want either of them to get hurt, even if it wasn’t their original intentions… oh, great. He probably looked overdramatic and ridiculous at this moment, with him collapsed on the ground waiting to be skewered through. Avery could feel the eyes on him but he didn’t dare open his own eyes. It sort of scared him, the thought of opening his eyes and in some twisted reality, he’d be back in his high school shoes—being the vulnerable Water he was so desperately trying to push back now. He’d see the very smirk on Hiro’s face that used to send shudders down his spine. He’d see a determined, his hands outstretched to protect the poor Water from the big, bad wolf that breathed fire. Avery was scared of reliving it.
Thankfully, when he did open his eyes, he saw two very confused elementals, their swords frozen in the air. Mickey spoke and a small, hysterical laughter bubbled from Avery’s lips. He breathed out shakily, mumbling a quiet apology. Avery just needed time to wrap his head around reality again—but Hiro was now right next to him and he couldn’t but flinch away from the Fire’s touch, now mumbling that he was fine. “I-I’m okay. Don’t worry about me.” Avery sent a small smile at Hiro before scooting away from him, bringing his knees to his chest. Relax. He breathed in and out slowly. He was not going to let this stupid misunderstanding break him. Not now.
He jumped slightly when two water bottles landed in front of him and he finally glanced up the ground—at Mickey. Avery chewed on his bottom lip. Okay, Mickey wasn’t the most pleasant person, not as pleasant as he was back in high school, but he still had his moments. He opened his mouth to say thanks, though instead, he obediently drank from the water bottle when Hiro held it out for him. He didn’t realize how thirsty he was until that moment, drinking for a few moments before pulling his lips from the bottle. Avery could almost feel the tension brewing up between them and he glanced back and forth at the two, silently expecting them to lunge at each other with intent to kill. In all honesty Avery wouldn’t even feel the slightest surprise if that actually happened—horrified, of course, but not surprised. Thankfully neither of them were grabbing at the other’s throat. “Hiro,” he warned quietly at his remark. The tension was thick enough, no need to add more fuel. Who knew rivalries could survive decades?
Avery lifted his eyes when Mickey spoke again. His rough tone was still there, but his face considerably softened. He couldn’t help but smile a bit, the urge to reach out and poke his cheeks suddenly arriving. The situation was completely inappropriate to do so, so he kept his hands in his lap. “Oh.” Avery blinked. His cheeks grew a bit warm and flinched when Mickey poked him in the stomach, laughing slightly at the gesture. It tickled, even if it was a little pointy. “You guys looked a bit too into it. Sorry I interrupted.” And he was. Boy, he couldn’t even imagine how stupid he looked right now. Jumping to conclusions, collapsing onto the ground? Way to not seem overdramatic. Avery sighed, falling backwards onto his back, staring at the sky. “Yeesh! Next time put up a sign or something,” he said, trying to lighten the situation. He sort of hoped by some miracle that they’d forget all about his overdramatic entrance—and go back to their fencing, or something. Anything but the subject of Avery. He turned his head towards Hiro again when he spoke and he raised an eyebrow, smiling slightly. “Well, no, I highly doubt you’d lose your job… but if you did, it’s probably because you lose in the looks department~” he teased lightly, turning his head back towards Mickey to grin cheekily at him. That was when he noticed Mickey rubbing at his knee and Avery slowly sat back up. “Is your knee okay, Mickey?” He crawled over, plopping down next to him, looking at him curiously.
When Hiro spoke again, Avery turned his attention back to him, shaking his head. “I’m fine, really, Hiro.” He grinned at him. “I’d rather go to your place. Gotta check on the little sister I've always wanted, of course~” His empty apartment wasn’t so appealing, especially in his state of mind. He looked fine on the outside, but a flurry of emotions and memories were fleeting through his mind. It was a constant film reel. He’d grimace slightly when a particular memory popped up, but overall Avery was pretty good at hiding things like that. It’s gotten him this far, after all.

They were a divorced couple trying to beat each other out regarding their kid’s affection. At least, that was how he felt about the current situation, though he had to admit that he and Hiro had never been on friendly terms. Their relationship had started with him protecting Avery from Hiro, and had ended temporarily when he’d gotten sick and stopped. That was as far as they went. He didn’t really want it to go farther. What was the point? Life was more pleasant when they were ignoring each other. The issue was just his question was to when they’d started competing over anything, specifically the issue with Avery. His gaze wandered between the two, confusion plain on his face as he tried to grasp what was going on here. Hiro was being nice to Avery, though at first Avery flinched away. Wait… what? Hiro was being nice t Avery. What twisted universe had he fallen into? He rubbed at his eyes. Was he having another episode? Real people didn’t generally star in his episodes. They were far more likely to tear them out of his episodes. Why…. ? At this point, he was starting to think he much preferred when Hiro bullied Avery simply because things had made sense then. Now, he was just confused. He’d missed something.
Regardless, his eye twitched when Hiro criticized the way he was handling the situation. He was tempted to remind them both of the fact that Hiro had beaten up Avery several times. Who did the fire think he was to be critical of Michaelangelo grumbling for one minute? And then, of course, when he graciously gave the ex-bully the point, he had to go ahead and add an insult. “Fuck off,” he snapped back, just as Avery was adding his warning and sent a glare in Hiro’s direction before he redirected his attention. He glanced back the nurse, confusion doubling. Since when did the fire actually bother to listen? Why else would the nurse warn him, if not expecting some form of obedience? Someone needed to explain this to him. Soon. Because it wasn’t making sense on his own and he’d obviously missed something in the last three years. They were the only ones that mattered. They were the ones that Avery had worked at the school. Ironically, so had Michaelangelo, but they hadn’t run into each other until recently and… well, he shouldn’t be thinking about that. It would just make him blush and then Hiro would get even more annoying and Avery would get nosy. And, those things aside, he was still worried about Avery. The water was obviously bothered. And Michaelangelo didn’t know what to do.
He did know that Avery’s blush made him smile, though he didn’t ask. He felt like a teenager, back in those days before he’d been sick, when hormones had raged. Avery always managed to remind him of those hormones and it was starting to get a little bit embarrassing. He felt like the smile itself was just a little stupid, so he tried to push it away quickly, tried to look serious. He was supposed to be serious right now, right? Yikes. Avery was like brain bleach. “It was sort of spur of the moment,” he admitted, and that damned smile was back. He even squeezed Avery’s hand gently, and some small part at the back of his brain said that was supposed to be comforting. Something was seriously wrong with him. “Hence, no sign. But I’ll keep it in mind in future.” Why did he feel like he was unintentionally flirting? He didn’t even know how to flirt. That had to be considered irony. Either way, maybe he should just stop thinking period. Then he’d stop over-analyzing everything, and it would probably help prevent him from digging himself into a hole by saying absolutely the wrong thing because he was trying to avoid that very thing. Jesus, he was going to break his brain, wasn’t he? Well, not necessarily. He snorted when Avery docked a few points off Hiro’s ego with the comment regarding his loss in “looks department.” He probably enjoyed that one a little too much.
The amusement fell off the face off his world the minute Avery drew attention to his knee, and was instead replaced by steadfast embarrassment. The rubbing had helped, but he nonetheless jerked the hand away immediately, wishing the nurse hadn’t seen anything. His face colored. For the most part, he didn’t like complaining. He especially didn’t like admitting weakness to someone he considered his enemy, like Hiro, but Hiro had also seen him collapse because of the goddamned knee. He didn’t want Avery to make a big deal of something small either. But, for some reason, the fact that Avery was suddenly much closer than he’d been before made him admit to the problem. “I was in a car accident a few years back,” he explained after a moment, trying to ignore what exactly had happened in that accident because it’d just throw him into a worse mood. “And my knee’s been a bit fucked up ever since. Today’s just worse than most days.” And, of course, he honestly shouldn’t be fencing when his knee was misbehaving because he was liable to make it worse, but whatever. In a lot of ways, it was similar to his schizophrenia. Some days were worse than most of the others. He had absolutely no control of it.
Similarly, he had no control over whether Hiro would be taking Avery home, but he hated Hiro for offering. It was a monstrous pang of jealousy that caused the following irritation. Avery only made it worse when he said he’d rather go over to Hiro’s house. The redness in his cheeks was no longer embarrassment, but rather fury. He shouldn’t have been so mad. He shouldn’t have been so jealous. Maybe it bothered him because Hiro and Avery were so much closer than he and Avery were and considering the past, that made absolutely no sense. He shouldn’t have been quite that mad. He shouldn’t have, but he couldn’t control it. He looked away, letting his hand migrate back to his knee, and trying to channel the anger into a rougher treatment of his aching knee. At least if Avery went with Hiro, he could go back to his fencing practice. But, of course, it wouldn’t happen like that. They’d leave. He’d say he was fine with it. He’d go home and play some video games, as far away from the world as he could get. Jesus Christ, why was Avery o good at manipulating him without even trying? Of course, maybe the nurse was trying to mess with him, but Michaelangelo also felt as though the nurse was far too innocent to really do something like that. He wanted to believe that, at least.

The tiny flinch did not go unnoticed by the fire but he did not make a fuss about it. He stayed silent. Of course Avery wouldn't flinch away from the fire's touch but this had not been a normal situation. Far from it and surely it was not something that would simply go without causing some emotional stir within those involved. In this case amongst the three of them and most of all the water. In his rushed concern for the water it went over his head how much the sight of Hiro and Mickey clashing swords could affected Avery. The things it could bring to light. For now though he just sighed in relief while still wearing a bit of concern on his face when Avery tried to calm his worries. Hiro simply watched as Avery tried to recollect himself after what he assumed to be a rush of adrenaline and fear. Hiro slightly ignored Mickey as he helped Avery drink the water. Of course he wasn't a child and Avery was able to drink for himself but it was obvious whatever distance the water elemental must have sprinted to try and stop Hiro and Mickey was enough to make him very thirsty. Hiro gave Mickey a glare but Avery an apologetic look. The water had a point. As it was the sparring had grown in intensity and both the fire and wind were coming down from an adrenaline rush. It was pointless and stupid to make jabs at each other at the moment. That was when things became rather awkward for Hiro. Before he knew it Avery and Mickey began talking as if they had been best buddies all this time. If it weren't for Hiro knowing that the two's relationship had become estranged back during their high school years then he wouldn't have been so surprised but this was just weird. If Hiro didn't know better it was as if the two were flirting with each other. The fire didn't exactly know what to think. Since when did these two get so close again? That was probably a discussion best left for another time. Hiro feigned a hurt expression, " And to think I thought it was my looks that caught your attention." he teased. Then Avery took noticed of Mickey rubbing his leg. Although he didn't care all that much he let the two talk without interruption. Hiro smirked back at Avery. " You know you're welcome anytime. Isabella loves it when you come over. Plus I'm making lunch." Hiro was hoping that Avery did take him up on his offer. One because he enjoyed when his friend came over and two it would give him an excuse to leave now with further incident. If it weren't for Avery's interruption Hiro and Mickey may still have been going at it for a while longer. Now that that was over with and the atmosphere had lowered to a sort of tolerant sort of mood he'd would like to leave in such a manner. There was also the fact that now that the adrenaline was calming down he was starting to feel the energy loss and thus was getting tired. He hadn't realized how hard they had been sparring. It was time to take his leave but the question would be if he was going to do so alone.

Avery held his breath as he looked between the two, the tension running thick. He felt helpless in this situation, and so he sent a pleading look towards Mickey not to make things worse, though he doubted he'd listen. He could sense the irritation practically radiating from the Wind and even though Hiro's changed, he still had the temper of a Fire. It'd just be nice to be listened to. Anger made people do petty things and he wished they wouldn't resort to that. Oh, well. Might as well be the peace-maker. He didn't want his two friends beating each other up. The image flashed in his head and he shuddered, instinctively scooting in between them. If they wanted to swing at each other, they'd have to hit pass him. And hell, knowing Avery's luck he'd probably get hit in the crossfire.
He liked it when Mickey smiled. He rarely ever did smile, so Avery appreciated it whenever he did. It was nice knowing he was the cause of it and he returned the smile brightly. “Spur of the moment?” He looked between the two, frowning slightly, though it quickly disappeared when Mickey squeezed his hand softly. He looked up at him, the sort of look in his eyes that said thank you. “You better!” Avery warned, sending a playful look his way. The nurse was skilled in flirting and often did it without realizing; this happened to be one of the times, though Mickey's flirting (was it really flirting? or was it just playful banter) kind of caught him off guard, though he enjoyed it nonetheless. Mickey was slowly opening up to him and he appreciated it. He was probably being a hypocrite, though. As Avery rarely ever opened up to anyone. “Or you'll have a very freaked out nurse in the middle again.” And he'd probably get hurt that time.
Avery observed the Wind's face, tilting his head in confusion. Mickey rarely ever blushed (well, around him anyways) so it was nice to see though he didn't understand why his face colored. Nonetheless, it was quite... adorable. Avery was so used to seeing Mickey so stoic, it never really occurred to him that he hadn't seen a lot of the Wind at all. “Car... accident...?” Avery froze, worry crossing over his face as he explained himself. Slowly, the nurse's face began to harden. “Then why did you agree to fencing with Hiro?” He frowned at the two of them. “You should've stopped, it could've gotten worse!” Okay, so maybe Avery was worrying a bit too much. It was in his nature, he couldn't help it. He worried about all the kids in the school, and it was worse because he was close friends, or at least, he liked to think they were, with both Mickey and Hiro. He hated thinking either of them could be hurt, even if one of them terrorized him during his high school days. He had gotten over that.
“Oh my goodness,” he gasped jokingly, hands on his cheeks in a fangirl fashion. “I get to taste the heir of Mizushima's cooking? I'm honored,” he chuckled, shoving playfully at Hiro's shoulder. “I'd love to see you in an apron~” he giggled, grinning brightly. Avery glanced over at Mickey, the smile still on his face. “Maybe... you can come along, Mickey?” he asked hopefully, nudging him slightly with his shoulder. It was probably a long shot, but it was worth a try. Avery then shot Hiro a look, a small pout to go along with it, to encourage some kind of invitation. Could he make old rivals into friends? It'd sure as hell ease his nerves.
