Kennedy could honestly say for all the stupid things she had pulled on school grounds, she had never had to visit the nurses office. She'd never gone beyond her realm and actually injured herself, made herself ill, or otherwise needed to visit the realm of the medical wing. She had walked friends along the halls and left them at the door, but Kennedy had never had to lay down on the cold beds, resting her head and waiting for somebody to come pick her up or feel well enough to go back to class.
That was, until today.
She hadn't been feeling well when she woke up that morning. However, the young Beaufort knew she had tests today and new chapter introductions, which were things she hated missing. She didn't like wasting time after school to make up tests, nor trying to figure out mathematics or sciences without having that first stepping stone to connect the dots. So, Kennedy had gone to school that morning. She had told her mom that she would call her if she wasn't feeling good after the end of her important classes and get picked up so that she wouldn't make a fool of herself puking or something in the middle of class.
The thunder probably should have called her father because her mom had forgotten that she was supposed to be waiting for a call. At least, that was the impression that Kennedy got when she called the house, work, and cell number and could not reach Janene. So, Kennedy was stuck in the Medical Wing until she could either feel better or get picked up by her evasive mother. The front desk ladies, or whatever they were, had told her to go to one of the rooms and lay down for a bit. Apparently, somebody would be back to check on her shortly. So with that, she relaxed back into the pillow and closed her eyes, listening for somebody to come into the room.

Though they were allowed in the staff room that normally housed all of the teachers and professors, on break the staff of the medical wing usually retired to one of the back rooms for their coffee and chit-chat. Every employee was entitled to their break whenever they wished to take it, within reason, and Joshua was drinking a cup of Tim Hortons coffee as he waited for the last few minutes of his to wind down. One of the volunteers was in the room with him, a high school student working on getting in her hours. She was friendly enough but a bit slow to pick up on things, a factor that made him glad that he was not one of those forced to supervise. That was left up to the real doctors who would no doubt be blamed for any of her mistakes. He liked responsibility but not in that way.
A glance at the clock told him that he had two minutes left in his break but as he tipped the last few drops of cooling coffee into his throat he stood up, deciding to go back to work early. There was no use sitting around on his ass if it wasn't necessary. The girl, whose name he knew to be Claire, followed after him. He figured that she was going to split off and go her own way but she was with him all the way into the main area of the wing that housed the waiting room and a couple offices. He tracked down his supervisor in the man's office, pausing outside the open door. "Got anything for me?" The man didn't so much as pause as he leafed through papers on his desk. "Go and check if the patients in the eastern block need anything, would you?" Josh pressed his lips together. Babysitting again, oh joy. This supervisor didn't trust him as much as some of the other doctors did. Joshua wasn't fond of the guy and he was pretty sure the feeling was mutual.
He turned around and nearly bumped into Claire, blinking in surprise and then narrowing his eyes. "What?" She seemed to detect the irritation in his tone and expression, hesitating before she asked. "Mind if I come with?" He got the feeling that she wanted to get her hours done with as quickly as possible but he wasn't the type of person to be overly sympathetic about that. Not when he had a job to do, and especially not when his current supervisor was on duty. If she breathed in the wrong direction he'd get in trouble for it. Resisting the urge to tell her to go and bother someone else, he said, "You want to shadow me while I walk around doing nothing? I don't think so." She made an irritated noise in her throat and he had to hold back a biting comment. "Go ask the receptionist, maybe she'll find something to keep you occupied." Sufficiently irritated by a combination of the girl and the fact that he was being treated more like a babysitter than an assistant, he resigned himself to the task and headed down the eastern hallway.
There was some kind of illness going around and Kennedy's room wasn't the first he stopped in. He noticed upon pausing at the threshold that she appeared to be asleep and the Fire graduate frowned, wondering if he should skip it and check back later. No, he'd never let me live that down. Bitter by the attitude of his boss, he rapped his knuckles softly against the open door before walking in, hoping to give the girl (who he didn't recognise) a head's up. "You awake?" She might have been a deep sleeper for all he knew. "It says here that you're sick." He tapped the clipboard in his hand before setting it down. It didn't say much, just 'complained of illness'. Not much of a lead. "My name's Joshua, I'm an assistant. How are you feeling?" His tone was decent enough despite the ire circumstances had instilled in him. It wouldn't take much to change his mood for the worse, though. He was on edge.
[She can recognise name, if you want xD So she'd know he was a traitor.]

Did she doze off to sleep? No, Kennedy wasn't one to really trust the people around her enough to sleep when she wasn't in the comfort of her own house. Call her paranoid, but her sleeping form was sometimes hard to wake and she didn't want to wake up with drawings on her face or shaving cream in her hand. Being a mastermind of plots and revenge, she figured there were a lot of people who might want to take advantage of her being unconscious. Therefore, she simply rested her eyes.
A soft tapping resounded through the small room and somebody walked in. The voice, masculine, asked if she was awake. She allowed her eyes to flicker open, filtering the light of the room with a few slow blinks as her mind focused on the man in front of her. Familiar, but she couldn't place his name at this moment. He mentioned that the clipboard said she was sick. It wasn't like she had a broken bone or anything, so the rapping of the clipboard felt like he didn't really know what to do about her situation. She was alright with that, she kind of just wanted to lay here.
When the boy introduced himself as Joshua, one of the medical assistants, the familiar appearance clicked. Joshua Dale. Fire graduate, traitor. If she recalled right, he was married to an Earth. While it wasn't really her business, she couldn't keep out of it. It might have been her groggy mind that clouded her better judgement, but the words tumbled from her lips before she could stop them. "Didn't think they let traitors in positions of power," she remarked, watching the elder fire as she repositioned herself in the bed so that she was sitting up. Was her remark rude? Yes. Uncalled for? Yes. But something made her curious as to how he got through the whole "traitor" situation as he did.

Her eyes flickered open soon after he announced his presence and the Fire graduate concluded that she was either a light sleeper or that perhaps she'd only been resting her eyes. As an incredibly light sleeper himself, it took little more than a loud breath to wake him. It could be irritating at times. He could fall into a deep enough slumber that his wife shifting beside him was no issue but if someone opened the door to the room, it would rouse him. It was good in case of an intruder but not so much for a good night's sleep.
He had not so much as glanced at the 'element' section of the form that was filled out for each patient upon their admittance into the medical wing. He had found that he worked best at treating all of his patients equally when he did not know. He might have graduated and taken on a staff position but it was hard to grow accustomed to treating his former enemies like decent human beings. So when she came at him with her snide comment, Joshua did not need to so much as look at the field to figure out which side of the alliances she likely hailed from.
Wonderful.
He wished that he could roll his eyes and walk right back out of the room. He hated dealing with people like Kennedy. If he had been working under one of the supervisors that liked him a little more, they would have understood. But the man calling the shots today was a Thunder and while he didn't say it outright, he adhered to the same grudge-holding traits as his high-school kin. He had never been fond of Joshua Dale.
He pressed his lips together briefly to bite back a cold comment of his own. "There is no elemental discrimination in the medical wing between students and staff." He sounded a lot like one of those cheesy posters they had up in the classrooms about respect and the golden rule and all of that crap but that was what they were taught. If they did not treat everyone as an equal, they could kiss their position in the wing goodbye. He did not want to lose his job. "The alliances no longer dictate who I am. I'm here to do my job." Adults had much more breathing room. The leaders couldn't do anything about treachery and the label of 'traitor' was more of an insult that an official title. It did not mean that all the Thunders and Fires wanted to be buddy-buddy with him now, it simply meant that he couldn't get in trouble for having a friend in Thunder like Skye while being married to an Earth like Nell.
Blinking, he said calmly, "So is there anything that you need?" He didn't like having to cater to her desires but that was part of being an assistant. One of these days I'll have more power here.
[It's fine! Josh is trying to be all ~professional haha]

Was it completely uncharacteristic of Kennedy to continue to poke at Joshua for his... Well, she really didn't have a word for it. Was love considered a disease? By some, yes. It was what had made Joshua a traitor. The last thing that she wanted in her life was to be labelled a traitor or be stripped of her powers, which was why she was just so blatantly awful towards Earth and Water elementals. It's not that she hates all of them, some of them were even alright to sort of hang out with, but she just didn't want that label stuck on her forehead forever.
She could tell that he wanted to say something on the matter other than his little promo speech about elemental discrimination. She briefly wondered how many times he'd had to repeat to himself that the alliances didn't dictate his life. "So if the Elements go to war, which side would you fight on?" she asked, her voice calm and level as his was. It was a curious thought. On the Water and Earth side, he'd be the odd one out, the one who's powers couldn't really be used against the opposing side. But if he fought on the Fire and Thunder, he might have to go against Nell. A curious thought indeed.
He asked if there was anything that she needed and she bit her lower lip while she pondered over the question. "Some water would be nice." She had a headache forming so she might as well get some water to try and fend it off before it made it hard for her to think. It was in no way intended to be asking a Fire to get her some water as some sort of contradictory joke, but she wished she would have considered that thought to mix it into another little jab.

He considered the girl with a carefully neutral expression, deciding whether or not he would humour her with an answer to her question. She had not been quite as snide about asking as some of her kind were in the past but it was a sensitive subject no matter how one went about it. They were discussing how he had turned his back on the element he'd led once, it was fragile ground. He did not regret his decision but that did not mean he felt he had to justify himself to anyone that thought it was their business to know his reasons. Was the ring on his finger not explanation enough?
He blinked at her and decided that he would take the bait if only to let her know that he was not messing around. "I am no longer a student at the Academy and so the wars do not concern me personally." It might have seemed like he was dancing around the issue yet again but he was not finished. He didn't give her time enough to interject before he added, "However, during my time at the Academy I made no secret of my allegiance. I side with my wife." He nodded at the wedding ring. If Nell had been a Wind he would not have betrayed his own unless they had been keen on forcing him out. He had turned on them originally when they had made Nell an enemy of the alliance and put a target on her head. If she was threatened, he would step up to defend her.
He expected a snide comment about how she wasn't going to accept anything from a traitor and was appreciative of the lack of snark when she requested water without any cold comments on the side. He got paid to deal with the bullshit that he faced each day but that didn't make it any less irritating. He went to fetch the water and handed it to her, having no idea of the jab she'd regretted not mentioning.
There was not much that they could do in the medical wing for illnesses that did not have a remedy but there were procedures to follow either way. He'd had them drilled into his head as a volunteer to the medical wing and now as an assistant he was bombarded with them all the more often. The job title meant more responsibility but it also meant more rules to follow. That was all right with Joshua—he did well with rules, with structure. "Do you need an out for any classes?" If she really wasn't feeling well then they weren't going to send her back unless she was feeling up to it. "We can get in touch with any teachers and inform them of what's going on so that your absence isn't counted against you." No one liked detentions.

Kennedy wasn't really one to go out of her way to bother people. But she did like getting people in trouble and insulting them. When somebody presented her with this much material, it was too much for her to just sit quietly. Not that she really disliked the Fire, but he knew what he signed up for when he became a traitor. If he wanted to not get crap for who he was with, then he should have not allowed himself to fall for miss Nell. It was as simple as that. To prevent love, one only needed to not meet the person in the first place. That made sense in her book at least.
Joshua was sure to keep a neutral expression when addressing her. She again wondered just how much work it had taken him to build up a tolerance, no matter how thin, to the people on the side of the alliance he had betrayed. She wondered, briefly, if the people on the other side welcomed him. Did they outcast Nell as well? While Joshua was a definite traitor, she didn't recall ever hearing ill-word spoken of Nell outside of people on the Fire and Thunder side. Maybe the Earth and Waters were much more understanding about love. It made more sense. They were a lot more whimsical and flowing on that side.
He repeated that he wasn't a student at the Academy anymore and so the wars did not concern him. The fact that he felt he needed to say that yet again was almost comical. She had been about to make a comment when he continued, addressing the question that she had asked him. In all, he said that he would side with his wife, the opposite of his "ex" alliance. She wondered what their back story was. What made him so adamant about protecting her? What made Nell so different from any other Earth girl? From a Fire girl? From anybody really.
At her request he brought her a glass of water, which she drank thankfully, the throb in her head seeming to instantly quell with the liquid entering her body. Josh then asked if she needed an out for any classes. She tried to remember what classes she was currently missing. "History, please," she requested, giving a smirk. If she wasn't feeling better by the end of that class, there wasn't a doubt in her mind that her mom would be there to pick her up by then. Then she could have them formally excuse her for the rest of the day. Plus, she just hated history class.
But curiosity was nabbing at her and the question slipped from her lips before she could stop it. "Was it different back then?" she would have stopped. However, Kenny realized that he probably would not understand what she was asking if she didn't continue. "The alliances, I mean. When you first met, was there anything stopping you two from being together?" she didn't know why she felt she needed to ask him that, but maybe that would lighten her judgment on him a bit. Her head was foggy from the illness as well, so she could play off a lot of bizarre behavior on that if she needed too.

He considered the smirk that formed on her lips, wondering if she was glad to be getting out of class. She certainly looked it, though it was possible that she was thinking something else entirely and so he was going to try and avoid assumptions. Instead he nodded. "Got it. I'll go and take care of that in just a moment." It was possible that she was faking illness to get out of class, they had plenty of that around the medical wing, but she didn't look like she was feeling completely up to scratch. He would ask a couple questions and check her out to be sure. Better safe than sorry.
He blinked at the question, a frown tugging his lips as he tried to figure out what she was talking about. "Back when?" He was busy thinking about his job, his mind already having moved away from the issue of the alliances. He didn't think about it nearly as often as he used to. His life was different now. He was different.
She clarified, though, and his expression hardened. It had not been phrased cruelly and she was not mocking him from what he could tell but being interrogated didn't please the Fire elemental. I have nothing to be ashamed of. And he wasn't. Betraying his alliance had been a difficult choice but marrying Nell had been the easiest one he'd made in his life, the one he regretted the least. "We weren't so much as friends when we first met, so no. The alliances were exactly as they are now. I didn't betray my element because of our relationship, anyway." The details were undoubtedly foggier now to all those who hadn't been directly involved. Rumours twisted stories and drove them in new directions. He wouldn't be surprised if word through the grapevine said that he and Nell were already deep into their relationship when he'd first been branded a traitor. Shit happened.
To give Kennedy a little more perspective and to prove that he wasn't simply making excuses for himself, he said, "She was my friend, so I protected her. That was all." Things escalated later. He fell for her, he asked her out, they dove through hell and washed ashore together. He wouldn't get into all of that with anyone. Kennedy had asked about the alliances and so he'd told her.
Switching back to business, he asked her, "So what kind of sickness is this? Anything we'd be able to detect or is it more like a simple stomach ache?" To explain why he was asking, he added, "If you'd let me do a quick examination, I could put it on file and it'll be more credible than just a simple complaint. Some teachers assume anything is an excuse." He actually remembered that from his own high school days as well. He had a near-perfect attendance record and a doctor in the family so his issue had never been all that profound but there were a couple people he'd grown up with and attended classes beside who hadn't always been so lucky. You could only fall ill so often before it raised suspicions. "Not that I'm accusing you of faking it, it's just standard procedure." He had a job to do, after all.

Kennedy was glad that he didn't question why she wanted just history. In fact, she was sort of relieved that he was still acting nicely despite the fact that she had been a little out of it and was blatantly being disrespectful. While it was his job, there were a lot of people that wouldn't stand for that sort of behavior. She presumed he was sort of glad that she wasn't acting as horrible as she had when she first started talking him. Part of her felt like she should probably apologize, but this probably would not transpire today. The Thunder was nothing if not stubborn about her pride.
Her question was met with a stern sort of gaze. She hadn't meant to make him feel like he was being interrogated, but rumors had twisted what really happened. The Thunder was just curious. He said that they weren't really friends when they first met, that he didn't betray the alliance for their relationship. Huh? that was definitely a new one. Nobody really could tell you what transpired for real between Nell and Joshua. That's what happened with shocking revelations and other such items like that. One person heard something, another tried to figure out the meaning, and suddenly you have a completely different story.
So Josh wasn't in love with Nell when he was labelled a traitor? He said that Nell was his friend and he had protected her. That was actually a lot more believable than the things that she had heard before, so she decided that he was telling the truth. He really didn't have anything to lie about anyways.
The subject changed then. Back to business. She mused over what was bothering her, trying to put it in terms that were somewhat medical for the sake of being able to tell the teachers that she wasn't just making excuses. "I have a migraine," she stated, closing her eyes again and thinking about what had been bothering her earlier. Stomach. "There's a stomach flu that's been going around and that was what I came in her for originally," she explained. Her stomach was still bothering her, but the pain of her headache was sort of drowning out the other things. "I felt like I was going to throw up so I came here so I wouldn't do that in the middle of class," she explained, opening her eyes and giving a weak sort of smirk as if this was sort of weird for her to admit. Kennedy honestly just didn't like missing school.

While he wouldn't call it gratitude, Joshua felt a certain respect for the fact that she didn't sneer at him or call names when he told her the truth. He had heard enough of that over the years to become tired of it and it was more of a nuisance than a real cause of upset. It was irritating. So the fact that Kennedy was willing to take his answer for what it was and close the subject with her silence was something he appreciated. He didn't like to go on about those days. The past was past. Dead and gone, buried. History was only interesting when it wasn't his own.
Being no stranger to headaches, Joshua knew how much of a bother migraines could be. Sensitivity to light and even the softest of sounds, a sickness in your stomach that wouldn't go away, the feeling that someone was taking a mallet to your skull. They were an absolute nightmare to deal with and even Josh would consider taking an absence from class if he woke up with a really bad one. He could not say for sure that Kennedy was telling the truth but as he didn't recognise her to be one of the serial 'ill' students who came to the medical wing to get out of class, he decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.
"Would you like some Advil?" They had the regular pills as well as the extra strengths for migraines. A lot of students stumbled in complaining of headaches and so they kept a full stock of them. "I'm not authorized to give out prescriptions but as they're over the counter, I could get you some from the back. They might help." Some migraines stubbornly fought against the pills taken to alleviate them and others caved in to the all mighty power of medicine. He'd experienced both in their extremes but he figured that if she was really in that much pain, it was worth a shot.
He nodded. "Yeah, we've seen a lot of the stomach bug cases come through here as of late. It's a nasty piece of work but I've heard that it passes quickly. You should feel better in a couple of days, if that." Some patients reported feeling better as soon as the next day, others took a little longer. Everyone was different. He was only glad that it wasn't the flu. That was not a fun thing to go through by any means. "Makes sense. You seem to be telling the truth and so I'll mark that down in the report. I don't think you'll be hearing any complaints from your teachers." His lip twitched slightly. He was growing accustomed to correcting his bedside manner even around those who initially rubbed him the wrong way. In a way, it felt like his job in the medical wing was preparing him for the real world. He appreciated it.
[that's all good! <3]

Truth. It was a touchy subject. Most people, when asked if they wanted to hear the truth or a lie, would say the they wanted the truth. It hurt and a lot of people become angered when you break their reality, they're beautiful lies woven into a wonderful life they chose to surround themselves with. Telling them the truth would be the best, but it would anger them. Hiding the truths, letting them live in their lie, while somebody else came in to tell them... They would get mad at you for knowing, for not telling them. So the fact that Joshua would tell her his version of the truth was nice. She could add it to her own list of realities she was keeping tabs on.
Because what was reality but a collection of painful truths and beautiful lies to a certain person? Life was different from one person to another? Kennedy might have continued on her escapade of truths, lies, and realities but her head was really killing her and this narrative was only trying to make a single point.
She was glad that Joshua told her his side.
Which allowed her to be truthful with him as she explained her symptoms. He offered her some Advil, which she declined. Truthfully, she had already taken some. However, seeing as it wasn't entirely legal for students to just be carrying drugs in her backpack, she wouldn't admit to it. "No thank you," she replied politely, giving him a slight wave as if to illustrate her decline of the proposal. He continued then, explaining that the stomach bug had been going around and when she should expect to be feeling better. Kennedy would probably be back in school the following day, seeing as school was her only "social" activity she really did. Sad, but true.
He acknowledged that she was probably telling the truth, so he made a note onto his clipboard. She was about to to ask him something, though the question fled from her thoughts as her phone vibrated loudly in her backpack. The Thunder pulled it out, glancing at the message. "here, i'm checking you out". Finally. Kennedy threw her feet over the side of the bed and stood up, grabbing her backpack. "You can scratch the homework notification," she remarked, slinging the pack on her back. "My mom's here," she explained before shifting slightly as if she needed to say something else. "I... I'm sorry for earlier," Kennedy finished, giving a smirk before hurriedly pushing her way out of the room, not able to sort her thoughts well enough to wait for a response from the Fire.

He felt no suspicion when she declined the Advil, figuring that she'd either prefer to take something else when she got home later on or that she simply didn't like over the counter medications. There were people like that in the world and he didn't question it. Instead he nodded to show that he'd heard and gave no other response.
He also didn't complain about the cell phone. The medical wing was not like classes and did not have rigid rules against technology. They understood that it could be boring to lie in a bed all day and so patients were free to mess with their phones as long as they didn't talk too loud or interrupt those who were in the middle of a lesson. Kennedy stood up after reading whatever was on the screen and he shot her a curious glance, silently wondering what she was going to do.
She explained and he dipped his head. "I'll make note of that, then." A parent picking someone up meant that all other things were nulled and so he did indeed scratch out what he'd written before and instead jotted down a note about how she'd been picked up from school.
Joshua expected the girl to leave without another word to him, given the rather awkward start the two had. He picked up on the subtle cue that she was not finished speaking, however, and kept his attention trained on her a moment later. The apology was not something that he'd been anticipating but after a brief pause his lip twitched in faint appreciation. He wasn't very expressive but it was something that satisfied him. It was nice to know there were elementals out there that did not completely loathe his choices and instead made an effort to understand the reason behind them. "Don't worry about it," he assured her, his way of saying 'it's all right'. "Good luck with everything." Because she'd been nice enough to apologise, he really did hope she felt better. He wasn't a bad guy, really.
