THE HEARTS OF LONELY PEOPLE
Nell rubbed her hands together. It was actually a mild day for winter, considerably warm, and there wasn't much snow on the ground. Even though the sun hung in the sky with a weak sort of energy, she still felt the heat against her cheeks, keeping her face from growing flushed. She wore a thermal and jeans, sneakers instead of the boots she usually wore for the snow. However, she wore a scarf, only because her hair had been pinned up and she needed to keep her neck warm. It was the best way to dress when out playing in the cold, even if it didn't feel as cold as usual. That was a miracle -- from her experience, every winter so far had been brutal. Only expected, with how high up they really were. Any reprieve was welcome with open arms, even if it lasted for only a day or so.
She tapped the soccer ball with the tip of her toe. Moving around kept her warm, as well, and she was already sweating even though she and Ashlee had only been out there for about a half hour. It was a cold sweat, and uncomfortable, but she'd grab a shower when she got home. For now, she wanted to enjoy the time she had with Ashlee. She fell in love with her at first glance. How could she not? The blond high schooler was absolutely adorable, and such a sweetie. And Nell had no qualms with hanging around high schoolers. She didn't think it uncool, like some people around her, or even creepy. The girl tried her best not to be creepy, even though she had a tendency to offer food to young children. All out of the kindness of her heart, however.
Exhaling, her breath curled into smoke. "Try to block me," she challenged when she stepped forward before dribbling the ball and using fancy footwork...which called her to fall. She collapsed with an 'oof' before rolling over onto her back. Bad idea. She was usually graceful enough for sports, but everyone had their off days. "I'm good," she said, pulling herself up. Maybe it was because she had a lot on her mind, a lot of stress, so much so it had begun to distract her in some cases. A lot of her focus went to Jane, her aunt, the woman who she hated with every inch of her being.
She passed the ball over to Ashlee and smiled, even though she now had grass stains on her jeans. The graduate bounced on the balls of her feet, rocking back and forth. "Okay, I'll try to block you." Though she had many interests, one thing Nell loved was sports. She was good at them, and she participated on teams during season. This year she probably wouldn't be able to balance school and a job, but she was hopeful that she could still do powderpuff in spring. Right now she would enjoy having this piece of park to herself, time to spend with a friend. Rarely did she ever get the opportunity.

Ashlee huffed as she ran for the ball. Playing Soccer with Nell was a lot of fun. Ashlee saw Nell as an older sister, one Ashlee never had. Being an only child, Ashlee had no siblings to do things with, so doing things with Nell was just as good.
It happened a few weeks ago, while they were still on winter break. Ashlee met Nell, and the two just clicked together. It was amazing, because Ashlee had someone she could run to about anything. Nell was her family away from family.
When Nell tried to pass Ashlee the ball, and fell, Ashlee ran over to her, and asked if she was alright. When Nell said she was fine, and stood up, Ashlee sighed in relief.
When Nell said to block her, Ashlee nodded and ran a few feet away, with the ball.
[maroon]"I'm not as good at soccer as you are, so I don't know how well I'll be."[/maroon] she said as she made her way across from Nell.
Ashlee hadn't had much time with family, so when Nell took her under her wing, Ashlee felt like she could belong. She felt happy.
With Nell on the other end, Ashlee kicked the ball. Since Nell was trying to block her, it was worth a try, so Ashlee kicked as far as she could.

THE HEARTS OF LONELY PEOPLE
Nell was starting to get annoyed by the sweat. It was one of the moments when she couldn't wait to get home and shred her clothes and take a shower. A nice, warm shower. Not too hot though, she could never do hot. She took her mind off that though and focused on Ashlee. Maybe not too hard, because then she would just turn into a puddle of feels. That's what happened with younger, cute people. She fawned over Jacob's sister and Josh's sister when she first met them.
So she was glad to be kicking around the soccer ball, even when she had Ashlee worrying about her because of the fall. Too sweet, too sweet. It was people like that who were the number one cause of diabetes. It was disastrous, almost. Sometimes inflicted physical pain in her. She was fine with it when playing around, though, sports could take her mind off anything.
Nell snorted. "You'll be fine."
If she could dribble a ball, then she could play soccer. Maybe not against professionals, Nell couldn't either, but just to have fun. She waited for Ashlee to kick the ball to her, and groaned as she missed it, spinning around. "Ack, horrible goalie. This is why I don't like doing that position, I'm much better offense." That was for sure. Of course, she didn't think Ashlee played on teams or anything, but she would understand that much.
Then she grinned at the girl. "I'll race you to it." It was further down, across the park. And Nell took a moment for it to register to Ashlee before rocketing off. That was the her best aspect in sports -- speed.

Ashlee loved having Nell near by. She was the older sister Ashlee never had. And, since she spent so much time with the Dale's, she decided she might as well become friends.
During the school year, she often saw Josh, in the hospital wing. He was very friendly to talk to. And whenever she was able to, she would go see Nell, his wife. She was a sweetie to Ashlee, which is why Ashlee always wanted to see her.
Catching up to the present, Ashlee laughed [maroon]"I can understand why goalie isn't for you, you like to run everywhere..."[/maroon] she said, huffing as she said every word. With Ashlee's heart condition, many people were too afraid to play with her, in fear that her heart would start acting up.
When Nell said that she would race, Ashlee blinked, trying to catch up on what she said. Then, once she was understood what Nell said, Nell was off running. Ashlee laughed [maroon]"That's not fair! You didn't give me a chance to say yes or no!"[/maroon] she laughed as she huffed to catch up to Nell. Ashlee had to admit, Nell was very fast!
[maroon]"It's not fair! You cheated,"[/maroon] Ashlee said, as she laughed.

THE HEARTS OF LONELY PEOPLE
Nell didn't know about Ashlee's heart condition. It wasn't that she didn't care to find out, it was just something that she had never found out. She knew she was in the medical wing a lot, though. Often she went there to spend time with her husband and she usually asked about who had come through that day, and how his day had been. But Ashlee hadn't come into those conversations much when it applied to her illness.
She wasn't far enough to not catch what the Wind girl said, and it made her laugh a little breathy. "All is fair in love and soccer," she called, somehow able to speak while running at the same time. Of course, it sounded winded and she would have to stop soon. But she was used to this kind of exercise. It's what kept her in shape, and healthy when she just couldn't resist a cookie or two. Her main fear, as silly as it sounded to other people, was dying because she wasn't healthy.
Nell got the ball and passed it between her feet as if she weren't tired at all. It took a lot to exhaust her, she had the same amount of energy as a child of three. "I'll take it a little easy on you, huh," she said with a grin. "We can just pass it between each other, how's that?" She was teasing, of course, but there would still be running should the ball go out of bounds. Nell didn't mind that much, even though she'd rather show her soccer skills. So maybe she wasn't exceptional with a soccer ball, but she was pretty good at whatever she put her mind to. The Earth graduate believed anyone could be good with that state of mind.

Ashlee loved talking with Nell, and Nell wasn't concerned about her health, so that was good. Most people freak and didn't want to do with her because of her illness. Still, it was nice to be a normal girl, for once. Even though Nell was older, and in college, it was nice to have a friend.
Ashlee laughed when she heard Nell's comment about love and soccer [maroon]"I'm pretty shure that's not how the saying goes. I'm shure the saying goes: All is fair in love in war."[/maroon] she said, laughing. Ashlee gasped as she tried to catch her breath. She was running and talking, and laughing, so she was running out of breath a lot. It was fun.
[maroon]"A little easy? I don't know. I might have to have lessons first. It's really hard. I'm not that good, I can't kick and run with it."[/maroon] she said laughing as she caught up to Nell and the ball.
[maroon]"Passing it between each other sounds nice. Let's do that."[/maroon] she said, as she finally caught up and made room between Nell. Now all she had to do was wait for Nell to pass the ball.

THE HEARTS OF LONELY PEOPLE
It was something Nell never thought of, being sick. Mental blocks actually prevented that. If she thought about it, she would only give herself a panic attack. She remembered the first and only time she'd fallen ill, and she probably would have ended up in the hospital had Josh not told her that she needed to do something about it. In retrospect, her "ignore" treatment was not the best.
Nell shook her head. One would be hard-pressed to find a moment when she wasn't joking around. She didn't like to be serious half the time. "No, no, I'm pretty sure that I said it right." Definitely. That's definitely what the old proverb was talking about. Soccer's been around for a while, it was completely possible that it could happen. Even though Nell knew better. She'd once been studying literature, cliches had been a way of life for her.
She laughed as Ashlee spoke. "That's all you need! I mean, people like to show off fancy footwork, but as long as you can get by them and be fast..." She clapped her hands together. "Bam, you're in!" That was really all that happened, unless you wanted to show off and look cool. Nell knew a lot of the moves, but she preferred efficient ways of keeping the ball away from other people. "Do you like any other sports?" She questioned the girl, cocking her head in curiosity.
She stayed content with passing the ball between them for a while. Until she threw her head back and moaned. She wasn't seriously complaining, of course, that went without saying. "I need to run free, amiga." She took the ball between her feet and started dribbling. "Tell me where to shoot, tell me where to shoot!" Her usual repetition of words when she got excited shone through then as she tried her hand at her own fancy footwork then.

Ashlee didn't want to argue about what the old saying was, so she jut let it drop. Besides, for all she knew Nell was right. So, arguing wasn't worth it. Besides, Ashlee was glad she was having fun.
When she mentioned the comment about fancy footwork, Ashlee laughed [maroon]"I barely have any footwork. So, I think soccer is out for me."[/maroon] she said laughing. She knew Nell didn't care about her footwork, she was just wanting to spend time with Ashlee. Which is why Ashlee loved spending time with Nell.
Ashlee laughed when Nell mentioned other sports [maroon]"Liking and playing are two different things. I love to play football, though not with football players. And I like tennis. But I'm not good at sitting down to watch them. I like watching baseball, but don't care too much to play it. And swimming doesn't count as a sport, or at least people say, but I like that sport too. It's fun to watch and to play."[/maroon]
That last one sent Ashlee back to when her father was alive. He used to love taking Ashlee to the pool area and teach her how to swim. It was a fond memory Ashlee had of her father.

THE HEARTS OF LONELY PEOPLE
Nell was the person painting her face for her team. Unfortunately she wasn't a fan of the Tigers, so she couldn't be striped, but otherwise she was that crazy fan. Most of the things she did was actually crazy in general.
She laughed at the words. "You can get better!" she said. "I mean, I play a lot, but I'm not going to be doing backflips and doing dances around other players." And that was kind of a jerk thing to do, anyway. Even though she enjoyed competitive sports, she didn't want to be that kind of person in any area of her life.
Ashlee described the things she enjoyed and Nell opened her mouth in a silent 'oh'. That did make sense. It was almost hard to imagine because she was so into sports. "I like all of it, but that's cool to have that many opinions!" she said, spoken like a child being told about grown up things. "Play what you want, yeah?" That was a good thing to live by.
About to kick the ball, she heard her phone ring from nearby. "Break," she called before jogging over to her bag and taking her phone out. After speaking with her husband, she said, "I'm needed at home. We can continue some other time, yeah?" It sucked that she had to end their fun, but she had some business to attend to.
