nia, meet me at cc. dress nice, i've got a challenge for you.
”Great.” Naima pushed her phone back into her pocket and sighed, leaning back against the tree. She was out in the grounds, enjoying the fog of her breath and the chill of the air. Classes had been hell today, and to be quite honest, she hadn’t even had the energy to make the move on that gullible earth boy like she’d planned. Oh well. Some other time. Naima was pretty cold, yes, especially since she hadn’t been able to scrounge up enough money to replace her winter coat. But there weren’t many people out here and she was in the mood to just…not deal with anything. Then she got the text.
Liam always seemed to refresh her, even when he was driving her crazy. So she’d found herself smiling at the phone when it read his name, and her lazy sigh was only half-hearted. Not, she didn’t want to dress up or go anywhere. But hell, if he couldn’t make it fun, no one could. So she shifted herself, making her swift way to the thunder dorm without the usual pit stops, heading into her room and trying to find something nice. She pursed her lips at her closet, thrusting out a hip and trying to glare it into cooperating. Eventually, she did come across a nice short black and white dress with one shoulder.
Once she donned it, put part of her hair up in a stylishly messy bun, and did her make up she looked old enough to party. She smirked at herself in the mirror, and then she tried to pretend that little warmth in her chest wasn’t excitement. Then she donned the last few accessories and made her way to the club. She’d had to reach three time for her purse. The fear of spending money was completely opposing the wish to have a nice night out. Eventually she gave herself a mental budget.
Flashing her fake ID got her in Club Corrosion, just like always. She winked at the moderately attractive bouncer as she passed, then proceeded straight through the packed bodies and thumping music to the bar, where she was sure Liam would be able to find her.

"If you're bored, I've got a list of things that need to get done by somebody with nothing better to do!"
That was the response the Davino boy would get whenever he mentioned boredom to Grandma Sophia. Which is why, when the lack of things for him to do kicked in, he sent a message towards one of his only girl friends to meet him at Club Corrosion. It was a simple message: nia, meet me at cc. dress nice, i've got a challenge for you. If he was going to try and entertain himself, might as well do it right. What better way to try than with a direct challenge to his friend while drinking under-aged at a bar? It sounded pretty good to him.
He slipped into a pair of black jeans and a v-neck Volcom tee-shirt. Shoving his wallet into his back pocket and a hat onto his head, he headed for the front door. "Grand-mama, I'm going out," he called towards the kitchen, where Sophia was almost always found knitting or something befitting of an elderly woman. Grabbing his faux-leather jacket and slipping it on as he passed the coat rack, he disappeared out into the lightly dusted world of snow that was British Columbia, Canada.
Liam pulled a set of keys from the folds of his coat, unlocking the "family" car. Sophia had needed a vehicle to get around but, since he was old enough to use it now, she simply had him run the errands for him. This was fine with him. A circumstantial car was better than no car at all. And with that, he drove to the Club. He didn't have a doubt that Niama would meet him there. She wasn't one to refuse his ideas, especially turning down a challenge.
He made it to the Club, flashing his ID that was only fake by less than a year. Soon, he could use a real one. He hoped the bar hoppers wouldn't realize if the date went backwards a year once that was cleared. He moved easily through the crowds, taking a perch against the bar and surveying the gyrating bodies for one that would be Niama. As he did, he scoped the scene. His challenge was simple, who could get a guy first. The male stipulation was his own personal twist, seeing as most girls wouldn't like him flirting with other girls while in his company. Plus, it was all to easy to charm the girls to fall all over him.
It wasn't much later when a cute little thing came in through the door with a one-strapped dress before moving to a visible location so that he could spot her. He moved a bit through the crowd, dodging her glance should she had been looking his way, before sneaking around behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. "Howdy, darling~" he drawled, resting his head on her shoulder as if the effort of holding his head up was too much. "Glad you came. We're going to try to catch some boys tonight, you in?"

Naima didn’t have to wait long, but she did already have a bit of an impatient pout on her lips by the time she felt familiar arms slip around her waist. She tried not to allow herself to relax until she was sure who it was, but she knew that touch—he did that often enough. He said hello, and she let a smile bloom on her face as she leaned back into him a bit, listening to what he was going to say. Boys? Well….
”Alright then,” Nai turned to face him, moving so that he wouldn’t have to remove his hands from her waist and wrapping her arms around his neck, ”If you call that a challenge.” Liam was hot. Hell, she’d never met a guy who made her feel so much like throwing caution to the wind. Still, she figure that if this was a competition, she had the edge here. Statistically speaking, there were likely to be far more men her willing to do it with a young woman than with a young man. Nai leaned into Liam again, tilting her head and smiling, ”Boys this time, huh? Got tired of women so fast?”
After another moment of letting her face lingering near his, she flashed him a smile and pulled away, leaning back against the bar and scoping out the potentials. Many were….sub par. But she knew what could help with that. She locked eyes with Liam and nodded her head toward the bartender, ”Does the lady get a drink first?”

Liam did not commonly hug people from behind unless he was trying to get in their pants. However, Naima was different. She was not quite just a friend, but he hadn't really decided a way to go about putting any moves on her. His friends would say that he was losing his touch, but Liam knew better. He hadn't failed with Naima simply because he hadn't tried. That was the difference in his book and it would be good enough for him.
Nai agreed to his query about catching a few boys tonight before turning around and wrapping her arms around his neck. He gave a lazy grin and a half-shrug as she said that his challenge wasn't really anything at all. Statistically she was correct, there would be more guys looking for a young lady with nice legs than a flirty boy, but something nagged inside him saying that maybe he wasn't just aiming for the guy tonight. Maybe he was aiming for something different, should Naima catch the drift he was throwing towards her.
She made a jab about him getting tired of women already and he laughed. "Well, I have to give you some chance of winning, don't I, Nai?" he teased. She was close, abnormally close for somebody that he wasn't trying to seduce, but that was Naima for you. A series on contradictions. Just like him.
"You'd think I'm made of money," he responded before he motioned the bartender over, whispering an order in his ear which he disappeared to go serve. The Fire leaned against the bar next to Naima, a lazy grin still on his face as he considered his options. He thought he might try and flirt with the same guy Nai did, but that was borderline cheating. "See anybody you like, Naima?" he asked, trying to focus his attention on where she was looking and see what guys she was hoping to snag. Whatever her par was, that was what he was going to match.

Without really thinking about it, Nai stuck her tongue out at Liam for a moment before chuckling lightly herself. ”Riiiight,” Naima said, ”I could beat you any day, boy or girl. Just try me.” A bit of excitement was welling up within her. And not just because of the presence of her lovely Liam Devino, though he did help. Any sort of challenge, manipulating and wrapping people around her little finger, that was what she loved. And Liam made it so hard to do, but even harder to stop trying. She knew the sort of person he was. It made it even sweeter to think that he thought more of her than he did any bimbo he’d ever slept with.
Pursing her lips, the young woman made as though she was still checking out her options as she watched Liam out of the corner of her eye. She didn’t catch what he ordered from the bartender, but they’d spent enough time together for him to know what she liked. Yup, there it was. The bartender placed a Vodka Collins on the bar next to her, and she turned to snatch it up with relish. Her favorite drink, the only thing she ever ordered for herself, because anything less was not worth her meager funds. Taking a sip, Naima smirked at Liam and said, ”You always know the perfect thing to do, don’t you?”
The primal beat of the music, mixed with the smell of sweat and the presence of her very favorite person, had Naima getting a little wild. She felt an extreme urge to just throw away the challenge and dance dirty on the dance floor. But no, that would be just as good as losing, and she couldn’t bear the thought of disappointing Liam. She shrugged a bit at her friend’s question, ”A few, I suppose,” she smiled mischievously at him, ”There’s quite the selection tonight. The inebriated rascal on the dance floor, though something tells me he’d be far to easy.”
”Or the uncomfortable looking blond over there,” she had to stop to laugh at the poor man’s look of discomfort, ”Something tells me he’s one of those goody-two-shoes who really has no idea what he’s doing at a bar. Look at him struggling with that dirty-dancing slut!” She laughed out loud, taking another sip and swaying her hips in time with the music. She loved the place, it was like her own personal hunting ground.
Naima placed her drink on the bar, suddenly turning and leaning toward Liam. She locked eyes with him, hands snaking up his shoulders and playing with the ends of his hair, ”Tell you what. You pick one for me, I’ll pick one for you. First one to close the deal gets the gold.” She smiled and backed up, taking a sip and raising her brow innocently, ”Unless you’re scared I’ll chose someone too hard for you?”

Sticking out your tongue was childish, but he couldn't help but adore the little quirks that Naima managed to use and still hold a somewhat decent reputation. It was good to balance immaturity with it's more positive counterpart, especially because if you don't manage to have the perfect medium, you had trouble keeping people around you. You were either dull or too much to handle, which made Naima different than most of the girls he'd been around. They were either very shallow or tried to be too deep. Naima was a happy medium, which might have been the reason he still wanted her around.
She was excited, it was evident in her voice as she remarked that she could beat him any time she wanted. "Oh, I'd like to see that," he said quietly, under his breath as much as he could as he picked up his drink that the bartender dropped off. He took a quick drink, glancing around the room again. When Nai asked if Liam always knew the perfect thing to do, the Fire simply laughed. "That's my job, Naima," he replied, his voice easy and laid back. There was a reason he got girls and being 'perfect' was one of his fortes. It was much like the frosting on the cake, to be metaphorical.
Unlike Naima, the overall feeling of the club was sort of lost on him. He could filter his thoughts and, when he wasn't thinking about the music or smells, he didn't really mind them all that much. Naima said there were a few that caught her eye, talking of the boys that would be easy for her to get by the end of the night. Looking them over, Liam agreed. They would definitely fall all over the young Thunder without any regrets. Well, at least until they figured out she was technically illegal. But that wasn't the real matter, right? All that matters was that she understood what would be easy and was looking for a way to challenge herself that night and actually win.
His female companion turned her attention towards him, getting close how she did when she felt particularly flirty he imagined. She turned the tables back on him, saying that he could pick somebody for her in the bar to try and get for the night and she would do the same in turn. Liam gave a smirk, raising his brows at her as he looked over the guys. Most of them seemed already preoccupied with somebody and he wasn't going to send her off after a spoken for guy. However... There was something that he could do and a slow smile spread over his face as the words came from his lips.
"Liam Davino."

”I’ll keep that in mind,” Naima smirked back, internally loving his smart tongue. And his confidence. And him. She wondered briefly if his attentions to her were part of some sick strategy to keep every other guy away from her and win him the challenge, but she dismissed that theory rather quickly. Something told her he’d enjoy his victory much more if he was able to exercise a little bit more of his talent. So Nai breathed out a bit of a huff and pretended she wasn’t impatient to hear his reaction to her proposal, leaning her elbows on the bar and surveying the pulsating crowd.
And then he said his name, and to be honest, Nai was actually confused for a moment. Her eyes darted toward him, and she studied him with a frown. Then she raised her chin as it dawned on her. And she…didn’t know how she felt. Her heart actually leaped in her chest, her pulse quickened, and she had to catch herself to keep her breathing from betraying her thoughts. But her face and demeanor stayed calm, and within a few moments she actually gained a slow smile, very similar to his. How clever. She smirked at him, her tone of voice oddly different, ”So the challenge was a farce? How disappointing.”
Naima didn’t know whether she was flirting or trying to buy time. She didn’t tend to say know when a sexy man tried to make the moves on her, but Liam was different. She actually respected him, and she had thought…. Well, she had thought he respected her too. She hid her disappointment with a long drink and then set it down on the bar. Then she stepped toward him, giving him a guarded smile and holding out her hand, ”Wanna dance?”

There was something different about Naima. Maybe it was the way she carried herself or how she ran with the big dogs like himself and didn't get carried. It wasn't that she wasn't attractive, she definitely was, but she didn't seem to fit into the stereotype of girls and boys he typically tried to lure into his grasps. Not that he really had a type. Male, female, smart, stupid... It didn't really matter so long as they were some what attractive. So what about Naima set her out that made him not want to actively pursue her like any other female he'd meet.
But something was wrong. Her face, usually portraying some sort of emotion when she presented a challenge, was bizarrely calm. Was she disappointed? Upset? The statement was supposed to be received as the challenge that she could most use, the forte of her night. If she could catch Liam, the king of catchers, then she was the winner. What better way to beat him in his own game but making him abandon his own. In his own mind, this made perfectly reasonable sense. Finally, a smile flickered on her face but it wasn't without its vice, calling his statement a farce. Liam gave a low chuckle, shaking his head.
"A farce? Oh, contrary. Nay, neither buffoonery nor ludicrously improbable situations shall be at work here!" he declared, his voice fluctuating over the advanced vocabulary like an Olde Shakespearean actor. He arched a brow at Naima, seeing how she might react to this response as she drank a bit more before coming towards him, asking him if he would like to dance. "Why, fair maiden, is thou not giving me somebody to lay my eyes on tonight but the body of thee?" he asked, his normal prince charm slipping into place. Oh, how he loved screwing with people.

Despite her inner emotions, Naima laughed genuinely when Liam started speaking oddly. She smirked at him, ”You are absolutely ridiculous.” With that she picked up her drink and downed the rest of it in a few gulps, placing it back on the bar and taking his hand. She leaned in close to him, letting two of her fingers caress his cheekbones before letting him go a backing up a little toward the dance floor. ”C’mon, then. If I have to deal with your mind games, the least you can do is dance.”
In reality, her mind was racing. She didn’t understand why he asked her to pick someone out for him, after that stunt he pulled. Maybe his intentions were not what she had first thought. Maybe he was just trying to catch her off guard. Either way, the only think she could think of doing right now was dance. With him, with someone else. She knew he was used to people paying attention to him all the time—she was pretty sure that the fact that he hadn’t impressed her when they first met was part of the reason he hung out with her. Or maybe, she had him completely wrong. One thing she knew for sure; the smell of hormones, the movement of a woman’s body, the ambience of the club—it wasn’t romantic, but she’d never met a single person who could stay truly clear-headed through it all.
Maybe she could coax him into having fun with her.
”Patience!” she commanded, her fiery gaze practically daring him to come out on the dance floor with her, ”Maybe I’m still scoping out the potentials? Or maybe I’m buying myself time.” She openly admitted it, but she figured he’d mistake her meaning. She held out her hand to him again, inviting him in. he would know just as well as she that he had about a fifteen second window of opportunity here. Any longer and some other guy would notice her dancing and try to grind. She shook her head at the mention of using herself as his challenge, ”I’m not a boy, love.”

Whatever game Liam was playing at, he wasn't sure either. It wasn't that he really wanted to lose this sort of friendship he had with the Thunder, but he felt like something needed to happen. He had to tell himself that there was a reason she was different than the other girls. Something that made her not his, but her own person. Did he want to erase the line between his and hers? He wasn't quite sure, not entirely into his game like he normally was. This whole night was just turning out differently than he had planned.
She called him absolutely ridiculous before finishing her drink and he gave a laugh as she leaned closer and brushing his face before heading towards the dance floor. "You really are something, Naima," he muttered under his breath, following her towards the direction she was going after a bit of beckoning about how he should have to dance with her because she was playing along with his mind games. "Oh, Nai, I haven't even started~" he bantered back. It was true. He had a lot more up his sleeve than that.
She told him to have patience in waiting for his mission. A head-start on her part, though he didn't mind. It wasn't like he was planning on still winning this challenge. She had to win, because otherwise he wouldn't get to see what the Thunder really thought of him. Maybe the reason he wasn't clicking with her was because she was just not interested in him. Liam was pretty good at sensing things like that, when somebody wasn't interested in him. He chose not to waste his breath on them. There was always somebody better out there, after all.
Naima held out her hand for him to take. He could dance with her now or risk some other guy jumping in and whisking her away. She pointed out that she was not a boy, therefore could not be the subject of his challenge. With a grin, he took her hand and pulled her closer to his body, the space between them going from about two and a half feet to a mere six inches. "And who's to say that I specified that guys needed to be male," he countered, cocking his head to the side with a devilish smirk.

The young thunder didn’t catch the words, but she did look back just in time to catch a very interesting expression her friend’s face. Her breath caught for a second, as she realized just how confused she was about this situation. She could only infer so much from a mere expression, but a part of her wanted to believe he was too. But she pushed that thought out of her mind. It was unlikely, and even if it was true he’d simply change the rules until it made sense to him again. It’s what she would do. She felt a little bit in limbo between decisions.
Finally, when he said he’d only just started, Nai realized that that was because she wasn’t even sure she was accepting the challenge. Cause that meant sleeping with him, or trying to. And something inside her made her not sure she wanted to…or was ready to…or would understand it if she did. So she just danced with him for a moment, smiling playfully at him when he took her hand, feeling her heart jump a little when he pulled her close to him. She inhaled deeply, gazing into his eyes with her exhale and smirking.
”Boy,” she said, ”You said ‘boy.’ Not guy.” It was just a tease though. She had thought about challenging him to go after her, but that would start a whole new type on confusion, the two dancing around each other until one of them finally gave in to the other’s advances. Or went home. Either way, she wasn’t sure how it would affect the friendship, and that was why she was so into buying herself some time here, ”You’ve put me in an awkward position, you know.”
Damnit. Naima had never thought of herself as the person who couldn’t follow through with things.
”Alright, then,” she decided, ”I’ll give you two, and you get to chose. Me…or him.” She nodded to a new arrival at the bar, a young man who either of them would have called extremely sexy without hesitation. The young man looked confident, comfortable, and laid back. Perhaps a little guarded, but not here with anyone, and surveying the crowd as though he, too, was a hunter.

Was Liam crazy? Probably. The fact that he had challenge Naima to try and get him tonight proved it. While insanity wasn't a proud thing for most people, the Davino boy prided himself in the fact that he could confuse practically anybody, trick even the best of minds, and wasn't able to be predicted even by those closest to him. That was who Liam was, a mystery. That's the lure of his character-type, nobody knew what to expect. A danger, that's what he was.
Liam wasn't asking Naima to sleep with him, no. That wasn't the point of the challenge at all. However, he hadn't made this clear, but he felt like Nai would understand that point. It wasn't that he didn't want to... Actually, it was. The Fire had no idea if he wanted to sleep with the Thunder, especially because of what they had going on. Hell, he hadn't even kissed the girl before! He'd been rather platonic with her so why did he even bring up the challenge? Because he was manipulative and loved watching people squirm, probably.
Naima managed to remember he had specified they were getting boys tonight and he rolled his eyes. "Does everything I say burn itself in your mind? The lure of my words leaving imprints on your heart?" he replied, his voice calm and alluring, a slow and easy smile on is face. She admitted that she was in an awkward position and he grinned. "You don't have to take up my offer, Naima. I will take no offense," he continued, giving a shrug. A small part of him wanted him to turn him down, but the reckless and stupid side told him that he wanted something good to happen tonight.
Naima said that he could either choose from getting her tonight or a suave looking man who had gone up to the bar. A hunter for the predator. It was a good choice but something didn't seem right about the challenge anymore, it had lost its lure. "What if... We just throw the challenge out the door," he suggested, giving a shrug. "I mean, it was stupid anyways," Liam finished, his voice calm and weighted, like he had been considering the options for a little while. Truthfully, the words just came to his mouth and he rarely filtered himself before speaking.

Naima laughed, ”Absolutely, love.” On an impulse she leaned forward and kissed his cheekbone, just a little, flirty peck. Then she leaned back to her former position, half wondering why the hell she’d done that and half watching him closely to see how he reacted. Up until now their friendship was all empty flirting and mutual respect. This was the first instance of affection—real or fake, she wasn’t sure—that she could remember passing between them. So hopefully he wouldn’t be ready for it. And hopefully she’d be able to get back on her own two feet again.
Cause man, he was confusing the hell out of her.
”I’m still not sure what the offer is,” Naima shook her head a bit, moving closer to him as they danced, ”It seems like an advance but…it feels like a taunt.” Honesty was one of her weapons, though she didn’t use it as often as some of her others. Naima prided herself on her ability to act the prime part in any situation, but sometimes a healthy mix of truth and lies could get her farther than just pretending. Liam she didn’t understand, but she could still get a sense of how she needed to maneuver. Just say the right words, and he’ll let slip what she wanted to hear. The truth. His truth. She shrugged a bit, ”Regardless, I’ve already decided.”
What he said next truly caught her off guard. In the whole of their friendship, Naima had never heard him call any of his own idea stupid. At least, not unless he was using that as an angle to get into someone’s pants. The thought almost made her frown, though she managed to hide it with a raised brow. He wasn’t using that nice guy act on her. He had to know she knew him too well to fall for it.
”Nothing you do is stupid,” She gave it a patronizing tone, but it was mostly honest. She stopped dancing and leaned forward, ”Everything you do is perfect, remember? We were just over this.”

Liam was somebody to expect the unexpected. It was why he was such a hard person to predict in the long run. He just thought everybody was thinking he would pull a stunt like that. It wasn't that he wanted people to always be on their toes wondering what shit he might pull next, though it was quite entertaining, that was just how life worked out.
So, it did take an act of pure genius to catch him off guard as Naima did. He wasn't expecting the Thunder to go for his bait and then act upon it, leaning up and placing a kiss just on his cheek like somebody might do a friend. He allowed a smile to enter his features, a genuine one, before it was replaced with his easy going look he almost always wore. His eyes sparkled, though it wasn't evident whether the Fire was planning mischief or peace tonight.
Her response to turning down the offer was that she didn't know what it was. Was he advancing on her or taunting her? That was a good question. Liam, though one to typically not think through his actions, tended to have his plans with the ladies thought out the to T. As he didn't know his intentions, he couldn't answer Naima until she said that she had already chosen her response. "What might that be?" he queried, arching a brow towards the young Thunder.
Nai continued to argue that nothing he did was stupid because he was perfect. He gave a devilish grin as she leaned forward, moving his other hand to caress the side of her face, brushing a stray strand of hair away. "It pays to be perfect, doesn't it," he said quietly, watching Naima for any sort of sign that what he was doing was unwanted. He didn't want to push her away.

That smile…that was real. Naima couldn’t help but match it for a moment, feeling extremely pleased with herself to have caught him off guard. She managed to fix her expression just about the same time he did, her transition as smooth as his was—which was to say, maybe not as good as her usual. She didn’t mind so much, though. For some reason seeing Liam falter was enough to make her completely disregard her own momentary lapse in control. Or more than momentary.
”Oh…” She smiled playfully, running a hand along her friend’s shoulder. Nai leaned closer to him, breathing in deeply, letting her lithe body do its work. She really didn’t know how serious she was about this, but she knew she was enjoying the moment. Whether this was having herself some fun, or enjoying this game of confusing one of her only male friends. ”You know I can never turn down a challenge. I was going to accept, but…if you’re not into it anymore..."
She was just about to step back away from him, maybe even ask him if they could go back to the bar to get another drink, when he touched the side of her face, brushing her hair back and somehow making her lose her train of thought. A small smile found its way onto her lips, and she stopped moving. She looked into his eyes, ”I think so. It’s…alluring, actually.” Albeit intimidating. Good thing she didn’t really think he was perfect.
