Walking along the edge of the semi frozen lake, Laney had her zippo lighter out and was flicking it on only to kill it with her mind after a few moments. It was nothing special, but it kept her busy and slightly stress free. Considering the fact that she was getting somewhere meant that she was still capable of learning more. She was determined to master her element if it was the last thing she ever did. It may be slow coming, but it would happen in due time. She flipped open her zippo once more, narrowed her brow, out the flame went. She smiled to herself before shutting the lid.
She had only been at the Academy for about a week, but it was starting to fill like a home away from home. The only thing missing was her father, but he had a place in the nearby town that allowed for short visits when he wasn’t working. It was better than nothing, so she wasn’t about to complain. Grasping her zippo tightly in one hand, Laney pulled her pea coat around her more tightly and adjusted the dark grey beanie covering her long, wavy, blonde hair. She was definitely dressed for winter. Her dark grey scarf was wrapped loosely around her neck and her hands were covered by matching grey gloves. She wasn’t dressed in anything flashy, but she felt cute nonetheless. She was still trying to find her own sense of style after having her father rescue her from the foster home.
Laney flipped her zippo open again, but this time she enlarged the flame and held her right hand close to it, feeling the heat seep through her glove. She bent the flame around a bit, a soft smile sitting on her pale lips. Maybe she would get the hang of it after all. And maybe she would actually find a place to fit in.

It was just another day at the Academy. It was November and the wind was getting colder. Then again it was fall at the academy. Bastian was walking down the pathway that led to the lake. Bastian was dressed in one of his long coats, with a scarf and his favorite fedora. Considering how chilly it was he wore a long sleeve grey shirt, jeans and boots. The point was to keep warm after all. With his bag in hand he had chosen to go down to the lake to draw for a while. The lake was nearly frozen and had a very pretty look to it. Perfect for drawing. Of course he had drawn the lake numerous times during different times of the year but each time he was able to capture a different beauty to the lake which he liked. The majority of the time his drawings came out looking different even if he was drawing the same thing.
When he finally reached his destination he found a good spot to sit down and laid his bag on the cold floor. He took out his art kit and sketchbook, opening to a fresh page. He took a glance out on the horizon. The wind was light but cold. He knew the water must be freezing but it was very still and peaceful looking. He grabbed a few of his pencils to first draw a general outline. When he got that done he would then start with some coloring. Then the pencil touched the paper and he was once again lost in his drawing as he normally always was. Every now and then he'd take a glance at the scenery, looking for specific details that he could put in his drawing like how the water moved or how the trees were swaying in the light wind. Anything that stood out to him that he wanted to capture in his drawing. It was during one of these glances that he caught sight of a young blonde that was walking along the edge of the lake. The thing about her that interested him the most was what she was doing. Manipulating fire. A fire elemental. Cool. Bastian was one that was always fascinated and in awe when he saw the elementals using their powers. He always found it amazing. Perhaps it was because he had grown up not knowing about this world of elementals or perhaps it was just because the boy was a curious one. Regardless of the reason his eyes lit up for a moment as he watched her for a bit. Then after another moment he returned to his drawing, now adding the girl with flame into his work.

Laney's soft brown eyes glowed brightly as she watched the flame build in size. She lifted her gloved right hand and moved it slowly passed the flame, forcing it to bend in that direction. She did it again in the opposite direction, smiling to herself. No matter how simple it was, just bending a tiny flame in different directions, she honestly couldn't get enough. Laney could walk and/or sit for hours with her lighter just playing with the tiny orange light. Granted, she probably would never catch on class work that way, and she wouldn't be expanding her elemental abillity either. Speaking of which, she had a history paper that she needed write. She let out a soft sigh and closed up her zippo, sliding it into the left pocket of her pea coat.
Laney turned on her heel to start back toward the school when she saw a young man sitting with a notepad of sorts and some pencils. He had seemed to be studying his surroundings and then writing... no, sketching something. An artist? Would it be too intrusive to see what he was up to? Possibly. Did she honestly care? Nope. Crossing her arms under her chest, she walked quietly up to him before spinning around and collapsing on her tush right beside him. She glanced down at the paper before looking back up at him and extending a gloved hand out toward him, "Hi, I'm Laney." She flashed him a bright smile before adding, "You're really rather good."

When Bastian drew he would get lost in his own little world that revolved around his work, especially when he was in a setting that he wasn't crunched for time or having to deal with noise surrounding him. So in a setting such as this, where he was alone near the lake was perfect for him. When he did get lost he was completely oblivious to what was going on around him. When he was drawing was the perfect time to sneak up on the boy if anyone ever wanted to. So when the young girl that he had only just seen a couple minutes ago near the edge of the lake was suddenly sitting next to him he was a bit surprised. His surprised turned into a light smile as he extended his own hand out to the girl. "Bastian." he said in a kind voice before his eyes returned to his drawing. "Thanks." he said in a grateful voice. Laney here wouldn't be the first one to compliment him on his work and he was always appreciative of the compliments because it gave him encouragement that he was doing something right.
"I hope you don't mind but I added you in the drawing." he said pointing to the small figure that was Laney from when he had first seen her walking on the bank of the lake and what he assumed to be practicing her fire element. "That was pretty cool what you were doing, with the fire I mean." Bastian was the type that was easily fascinated with things, especially when it came to the elements. Even if he didn't get along with everybody it didn't make thing things that people could do with their elements any less fascinated, at least when they're not using it on other people just to mess with them. "Being a fire must be convenient during times like this when it's cold huh? Sadly the wind isn't very helpful in the keeping warm department."

Bastian, huh? That was name she could remember. She smiled at him when his tone went from being surprised to grateful. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you, Bastian.” She wasn’t exactly the artistic type when it came to drawing and such, in fact, the majority of her ‘art’ would make a fifth grader look like a professional. So when she looked at his, she was quite impressed with the detail and how realistic it looked. She took a closer look at the small figure by the bank and found herself beaming. No one had ever drawn her before, granted, she was never in anyone’s line of sight when it came to an artist. Never the right place at the right time, perhaps? Nodding her head, she looked up at him and grinned, ”I’ve never been drawn before, excluding stick figures. I like it.”
Laney pulled out her Zippo at the mention of her element. Flicking it open, she pushed the little reel down and watched as a small flame came to life. ”I’m not very good… in fact, I’m probably the worst in my year when it comes right down to elemental control. But I’m trying my best.” She held up her free gloved hand and narrowed her brow toward the flame. It grew in size by a couple of inches. Looking back at Bastian, she lost her concentration and the flame went back to normal. ”Wind probably isn’t the best in the winter time, true, but it’s nice to hear that that is your element. My father said I can only be friends with certain people due to the alliances between elements.” She shrugged lightly. It wasn’t like she was going to go against her dad’s orders. She just got him back in her life, she wasn’t about to screw that one up.
