"Why aren't you spending your birthday with us?" A young, female voice whined from the top of the stairs, her blonde hair all in a disarray after her shower. Devin was sitting on the couch in his swim shorts putting on a small layer of sunscreen. He wanted to get the tan but wasn't interested in turning into a cherry. "Because, 'Thena," Devin finally managed, finishing up the final touches and standing up. "I want to spend time with my girlfriend today. Is that okay?" Athena pouted and sighed, resting her arms on the banister and looking at her brother with a sad, long expression. He raised an eyebrow and shook his head. "You'll be fine! We're doing something this weekend, remember?" She sighed again and ensured that she drew it out a bit longer than before. "Okay, fiiiine. Just don't forget about us DJ." Devin rolled his eyes and slid his flip-flops on. It bothered him that his own little sister would think so low of him, but he understood the fear of having the family drift apart. He did not want that any more than she did.
After sliding on his shirt, he grabbed the keys and made his way to the door; Athena's footsteps could be heard from somewhere behind him as she traipsed down the stairs. "You really like Sandra, don't you?" The girl finally asked. Devin smiled to himself before turning to look at his sister. "Yeah, I do. A lot." He reached out, ruffled her wet hair, and turned to leave the house. It was time for an evening out with his girlfriend.
The drive to the beach did not take too long, give or take a few stop lights. Devin was excited about spending time with Sandra and hoped that the beach was not going to be overrun with people. It was a public place; there were people bound to be there at some point, but if he could avoid them and have the beach to themselves that would be nice. Devin parked the car and looked out at the beach, noticing that it was not that busy and the sky was a beautiful array of colors. He chose the late afternoon for a reason, and this was one of them. Grabbing his towel and sunscreen, Devin slid out of the car and wandered onto the beach. It had been some time since he had come out here to enjoy the sand and the water. A good way to spend my birthday. It only took him but a minute to spot his girlfriend, considering the beach was rather empty. He wandered up behind her and put his hands on her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Hey beautiful!" Devin greeted happily. He pulled away and stood next to her. "You ready to have some fun? I've been so excited about spending the day with you. Athena kinda held me up, sorry about that."
He rubbed the back of his head a little and chuckled. "What do you wanna do first?" Devin asked sweetly, peeling his shirt off and dropping it in the sand next to his towel. "Swim? Build a sand castle? Eat?" Would the most indecisive people in the world be able to make a decision? Who knew. Devin really was happy to simply spend time with her.

Sandra was kind of glad that at the apartment, she didn't live too far from the lake, because as a kid growing up in Vancouver, she had gotten pretty used to having the beach at relatively close hand. A lake really wasn't the same as the entirety of the Pacific Ocean, but man, Sandra really did like the beach -- swimming was great and she just loved people and being out in the sun and how there was always an ice cream truck close by. Today she was excited for more than just a beach, though, because it was Devin's birthday and they'd be spending the evening together and okay, she was allowed to be excited about spending time with her boyfriend, alright? She'd packed them a dinner and everything, even managed to sneak a mini-cake into the basket, tucked his gift in a gift bag and put that in a bigger bag in which she also had her towel and things, so that it wouldn't look suspicious or anything. Sandra really... wasn't that good at surprising people, but hopefully he hadn't suspected anything.
She'd already told Matthew that she had plans for the evening, so with picnic basket in hand and her bag slung over her shoulder, she left the building to make the short walk over to the beach, and she was pleased to find that it wasn't overly crowded. Sandra was very much a people person but this was kind of special, she thought, so it would be nice. Finding a decent spot on the beach, she set her bag and the picnic basket down, exhaling slowly, happily, as she turned to look at the lake. It was kind of beautiful at this time -- but then she was distracted no more than a couple of seconds later, jumping a little when she felt hands on her waist, until she realized it was just Devin. "Heyyyy!" she greeted with a kind of ridiculous grin as she turned her head just a little so that she could see him where he was kind of perched on her shoulder. Sandra was just happy. "Happy birthday, you! How was your day, good?" She turned properly to face him when he pulled away, still smiling. They didn't spend much time detached, though, because next thing she was pulling him into a tight, proper hug. "So ready! And it's okay, I just got here -- s'everything okay with Athena?" she asked, voice a little muffled as she snuggled against him.
After a second she released him, glancing down at the picnic basket as he mentioned eating. "This is your day! We can do whatever you want!" If there were an award for Most Collectively Indecisive Couple, she was pretty sure they would win it hands-down, and it was pretty great. She didn't mind letting other people take the lead, most of the time was just really glad to get to spend time with people at all. Then, turning back, she realized that he'd removed his shirt, and Sandra immediately turned a pretty vivid shade of pink. "Um, uh --" She didn't even really know why she felt hte need to say anything but Sandra was just horribly, horribly awkward when it came to boys -- even her boyfriend, yes, okay, she was just painfully awkward -- and he, uh... he looked good. ...Hi, Devin. "We can, um... we can go swimming if you want!" she said, squeaking a little bit and still probably blushing. She had her swimsuit on under her clothes too, she remembered, and -- maybe just to give herself something to do -- she slid her t-shirt and shorts off too, stuffing them into her bag (hiding his gift bag also inside from view, of course...), glad for the small distraction. Sandra was still a little pink when she got up, but she smiled. "So, uh... Um... Seriously, we can do whatever you want," she said finally, giggling a little bit, wishing she could do something to hide her cheeks but urgh, that probably wasn't going to work out too well. Part of her was aware that it... really shouldn't be that awkward anymore, but this was a pretty different type of awkward fail than before, that one day at his house working on the costume.

The smile on Sandra's face made him smile even wider; he loved to see her happy and to know that he was one of the reasons she smiled made him feel good. That was important to him. Even on Devin's birthday he was spending his time concerned about how others around him were feeling. "It was good! Woke up to my aunt and sister singing to me at an ungodly hour this morning, but it was enjoyable I guess. How was yours?" Not to mention both of them giving him kisses on the cheek and giving him overly annoying family love. At least it was an off day and he didn't have to go to class. He was able to doze off for a while longer before finally rolling out of bed. The blonde waved her off with a small smile and a chuckle. "Ah, she's fine. She wanted to do something for my birthday on my birthday but I told her I had a previous engagement with my wonderful girlfriend." Athena could wait until the weekend, he figured. There were plenty of other things to occupy her time until then.
He laughed. "I know it's my day, but I'm spending it with you." Devin pointed out with a shake of the head. "Your opinion is just as important." It didn't help that he was completely and totally indecisive and did not want to make this choice alone. Hearing her stutter did not go unnoticed, and he watched her with an inquisitive gaze. She was so adorable when she blushed. Hell, the girl was adorable no matter what she did. It was one of the things that drew him to her. The look on his face was not exactly smug but definitely content. "You okay?" He asked first, before running a hand through his hair and glancing over at the water with a small nod. "Swimming sounds good! But you probably can't swim in your clothes so--" The moment Devin turned around to search for any sort of confirmation for swimming and to continue teasing her, he found himself unable to speak. Whoa. She was...beautiful. It took him a moment to find his voice.
"You look...good. Really good." He rubbed the back of his head anxiously, glancing down at the sand where their clothes now lay. Normally the confidence he felt around girls was dissipated. Sandra was different. She was not like any other girl. He cleared his throat. "So yeah! Swimming. Let's do that. And then we can eat?"
He was always hungry, and after a good swim there was definitely a chance he would be starving. He observed the items Sandra brought along with her with a thoughtful smile. "Did you actually make food or did you just pick up something? Either way you didn't have to. We could have gone somewhere to eat." It was incredibly sweet to know that Sandra was willing to make him food but he did not want her to go to unnecessary lengths. This was a day for the both of them, after all. At least, he thought so. With a boyish grin he took hold of her hand and led her to the water. It was cool and crisp against his skin, toes digging into the sand below. "You ready?" He watched her for a second, entwining his fingers with hers for a moment before letting go and diving into the water. He popped up a moment later and shook out his hair, motioning for Sandra to follow. "Come on, it feels pretty good!" It was a nice summer-y day and though the sun was going down it was still warm and comfortable.

Considering that Athena and Aunt Judith and Devin were all a pretty adorable family, Sandra thought that this was all too cute for words, though as a girl who enjoyed her sleep she wasn't sure she'd like being woken up like that. Still, birthday surprises were always nice, and Devin didn't look like he was falling over from exhaustion, so it was probably okay. "Awww, but that's so cute! Did you end up going back to sleep after?" she asked, giggling a little. "My day was okay! Just the same as always. I'm glad you had a good day though." Unlike Devin with his fancy dancy college schedule, she had had school today, but then she'd come home and preparing the food wasn't so bad at all -- now it was late afternoon coming into evening and she was here, so all in all, it'd been a really good day. "Aw, tell her I said sorry! I didn't mean to steal you away for the day," she said, poking his cheek, her smile small but present. She really was happy that Devin had wanted to spend the day with her, but she did feel kind of bad -- Athena was adorable and family was always important.
Sandra just shook her head right back at him. He was so sweet for caring that much, honestly, but she really wasn't that fussed about what they did or when they did it. So long as he had a good day, she'd be okay with that. "But I don't care what we do! As long as you have a good day and everything," she told him, patting him on the head a little. Devin was the cutest thing. Well, he was cute among a bunch of other things she could say to describe him, and her face felt ridiculously warm a few moments later. She just nodded a few times to answer his question. "Yeah! Uh... I'm good. Just... yeah, I'm good," she said, still blushing profusely, but she smiled sheepishly at him. Sandra just got really awfully awkward sometimes, a rare thing because she was usually more than comfortable around everyone. This was kind of different. "Uh -- swimming in clothes is probably pretty uncomfortable, yeah," she agreed with a small giggle, still sounding nervous from before, but she was (slowly) getting used to it. He was her boyfriend! It shouldn't be this awkward! She didn't think it should anyway, but what did she know? "Not that I haven't done it before, but uh... yeah, it's probably easier, like... without. So uh, y'know. No big deal!" There was another nervous giggle as she looked down at where their clothes were. She was kind of just rambling for no reason considering she just had her swimsuit now anyway -- but Sandra kind of always rambled.
So preoccupied in her own nervous stuttering, it took her a moment to notice that he was kind of staring too, and she stared back withs lightly wide eyes and lost track of everything for a second again. Um... When he finally spoke she blushed harder if it were possible, but she gave him a wide if slightly embarrassed smile. "I, um... Thanks. You do too," she said softly, hesitating a second before kissing his cheek, the brief moment in closer proximity making her cheeks practically burn. They were probably glowing. "But swimming! Swimming is good! We should do that! And oh... yeah, I made food, but I just hope you like it. I won't be offended if you'd rather go somewhere else or something," she assured him with a grin. It was easier to form proper sentences now. Plus... food was easy to talk about. She smiled brightly, following closely when he took her hand. The water was a little cold but she expected that it'd warm up after a few seconds, and she nodded. "Ready!" she answered, squeezing his hand a little for the brief moments that their fingers were intertwined. She watched him dive in first, a happy smile on her face, and then jumped in after he'd resurfaced.
"Ahhh, it's so cold," she whined, but it was mostly in fun and she was giggling as she swam over closer to him, pushing hair away from her face. She'd been right before, though -- it did warm up within a few moments, and she splashed a bit of water in his face with her fingers. Then... then she remembered that she was allowed to do what she wanted now, regular humans being gone from Maple Hollow (not to mention that the beach was so clear anyway) and with a wave of the hand she formed a wave to wash over his face, giggling when it did so. "Oops," she teased, trying and mostly failing to waggle her eyebrows at him. Sandra was just... in a silly mood.

Devin waved her off with a smile and a chuckle. "Of course I did! No classes equals being a lazy bum, you know." He held up a finger and waggled it at her, still wearing his toothy grin. If they needed a definition of lazy in the dictionary, they would merely have a picture of Devin playing video games on the couch with a pile of junk food. Although college was not exactly something he was interested in, at least the schedule was easy to manage and did not take all day. "Just the same as always?" He asked with a small frown. "Well that's no good. I guess we'll have to at least make the end of the day worthwhile!" A nice afternoon with one another on the beach for his birthday. Sounded fairly ideal to him, he thought. "Aww, I volunteered to be stolen away by you for the day, remember? There's no need to apologize." His family was wonderful and he was more than happy to have them back in his life but he had a girl he was truly fond of and he wanted her to be just as much a part of his world as Athena and Judith were. She was worth that.
Indecisiveness would probably be the death of them one day. All Devin wanted was for Sandra to be happy, because he thrived off of her happiness, but it seemed she functioned in a similar way. A medium ground would hopefully be found at some point but until then there would just be relentless back and forth until they came up with something to do. Devin didn't mind though. He nodded at her. "Okay, if you're sure." He was not sure if she actually was okay but he would believe her none the less. He tried to keep up with her rambling--which he had to admit was insanely adorable--and merely stood there and listened to her with an amused smirk on his face and an affectionate gleam in his eyes. She really was the cutest thing on earth, he decided. "You're adorable. I hope you know that. I mean, I'm surprised they managed to fit so much adorable-ness into one person but they did." Her little ramblings, giggles, and pink cheeks were enough to make him smile in return.
"But yeah, going without clothes is probably best," He finally managed to reply to her previous statement, then added, "Well not completely without clothes because I don't think we're on a nudist beach." And that would be incredibly awkward, no matter how confident Devin could appear to be with his appearance.
Speaking of appearances, he found himself in a mini staring contest with his girlfriend. Who would break contact first? The temporary silence was a bit unnerving because at first he wasn't sure what else to say, if he should say anything. Maybe his comment was a bit too much, or his staring was awkward. Damn. Sandra finally responded though and the boy exhaled slowly to release the tension building up in his chest. "You're welcome," He mumbled. His cheeks felt quite warm at this point--especially after her kiss on his cheek--but allowed the progressing conversation help him push past it. "Aww, I'm sure it'll be delicious! You can't go wrong with a home cooked meal, ever. And I believe we already discussed me making you my chef at some point anyway." Devin tapped his chin, thinking back to their past conversations. With most of those, he realized at that time he never thought he'd have Sandra for his girlfriend. He was glad for it though. He laughed when he resurfaced from the water and she jumped in only a moment after; it was nice to have fun and enjoy the afternoon. The simple things were always the most wonderful.
"Oh, it's not that cold! I mean, if I were a Fire student I could fix the problem but..." He shrugged and offered a light smile, showing he was not the least bit upset that his element was the total opposite. Some of them were nice, like Josh, but others were certainly on the 'avoid at all costs' list. His mouth dropped open, though the smile was still present as he found himself being splashed. "You're lucky I can't control the water," Devin warned with a mischievous look in his eye, "Because I would make a pretty bad ass opponent. The biggest water fight of the century." He spanned his hand out as though reading the headliner of a newspaper before glancing at her and splashing her back. "You sure you wanna play this game? Because I just might win." Without waiting for her consent, Devin pushed forward through the water and attempted to pick her up with a devilish grin. "Or I could just...throw you. Or hold you hostage until you give in. I'm pretty flexible."

Sandra just laughed. "I wish I could sleep in on weekdays," she said with a kind of wistful sigh, but she would be alright, really. She was lazy enough as it was in the first place -- her brother could attest to that. Actually, so could most people she knew. She supposed that it didn't really matter that much what time she got up, when she spent most of the day napping on and off anyway, unless she had something to distract her. "I'm hanging out with you! It's worthwhile already," she said, and it sounded stupid and cheesy even coming out but she said it with a happy smile, poking his lips up into a smile as well when she spotted his frown. Cheesy or not, though, she really was very happy at the moment. Her smile widened at his answer. "If you're sure! But still sorry. Just have fun today so I don't feel as bad, okay?" She was kidding and it was probably clear in her voice. She might have felt a little bad that Athena was disappointed and what-not, but short of forcing Devin to go home (which really, she wouldn't want to do) she couldn't do much.
Aside from pretty awful awkwardness and maybe some nerves, Sandra was most definitely alright, so she just smiled and nodded. Her cheeks were still red, she was sure, but okay... okay. She'd be fine! She could be rational about this! The compliment just made her giggle more as she shook her head. "Thanks, I think!" Was that really brand new information? It wasn't really, but it was always much appreciated coming from Devin. "Good thing though, then we can be adorable together! Or something! I don't know," she said, laughing. She was mostly just being a dork, but this tended to happen whens he was in a good mood, and she... was definitely in a good mood, yeah. Sandra blushed more at his next words but nodded a few times to show her agreement. "Yeah... yeah, I don't think so either," she agreed. "But but but but it's all good. Swimsuit, see?" Living so near the beach, whether in Vancouver or now here in the Hollow, meant that she actually did have tons of them, a drawer back at home dedicated to bikinis and the like. Sandra just thought they were cute, mostly.
She was actually only acutely aware of his staring, mostly because she was more than a little distracted too, but luckily the awkwardness seemed to mostly pass after she spoke. Phew. That was good. "You're too cute," she mumbled in return as she withdrew, but then she grinned, pressingo n with the conversation. No awkwardness here, nope -- at least, there was none of that weird awkwardness anymore that she hadn't much liked, but that had been a while ago. This was a bit different. "It's not... that fancy or anything," she said, hoping that he didn't expect anything much (though okay, she was proud of the mini-cake, but it wasn't anything special other than that). "And this is true! I still expect payment in cheeseburgers, FYI." No... of course she didn't -- and she was nothing close to a chef at all, but she'd choose 'girlfriend' over that any day.
Sandra just laughed when he spoke, pushing hair out of her eyes -- when wet it was always such a mess. She'd have to deal with that later, though. "I'm not sure you could pass for a Fire student," she said, smiling. Some Fires were pretty nice but Devin was, at least as far as she could tell, an Earth through and through, and that was honestly really cute. "But hm, it's not that bad after a while." She was definitely warming up to it after a few seconds. His warning made her raise her eyebrows, but her grin was too silly for her to be taken seriously at all, she was sure. "Pfft, like you could beat me at my own game," she teased, though she was sure he really would have been able to if he were a Water too. "That'd be great though! They'd be coming to see us battle it out in some huge water stadium or something. And you are so --" She was about to say "not winning", but she cut herself off and instead just squeaked loudly as he popped over beside her and picked her up. She kicked her legs a little now that they were off the sand below. "Noooo, that's cheating. No one likes a sore loser, Dev," she whined, but she wrapped her arms around to cling to him a little just in case he actually did decide that he wanted to throw her. Eep. That wouldn't be good at all. Also, though, she just... sort of liked the closeness, but she was kind of pressed up against him, and, uh -- again, eep. "You wouldn't dare," she said, squirming a little bit. The words sounded a little less sure and more hopeful than anything else, but luckily Sandra wasn't too fussed about it -- even if he did do either of those things she was probably still okay.

It truly was a glorious thing to have a schedule that was not as uptight as high school. Everything was set for your own pace and your own hours. It made it easy to work as well, which was always an added bonus. Devin liked that he could build his use of time the way he wanted. "You will soon!" He chirped with a grin. "Only four or five more months and you'll be...one of us." He said this as though Sandra were being pulled into some sort of cult, eyes shifting back and forth warily. It was true though; soon his girlfriend would be a college student too and the freedoms he received would also be offered her as well. He knew how much the girl liked her sleep. It was not hard for Devin to give her another smile when she said it was worthwhile; it never hurt to know that time spent with him was at least positive. He nodded seriously. "Oh yeah, I will try my best to have as much fun as possible. I have to try so hard Sandy. So hard. You have no idea." Although his initial expression appeared rather stolid, about mid-way through the sentence you could tell that he was attempting to refrain from cracking a toothy grin. Devin was not exactly adept at being serious.
He nodded at her when she thanked him; the boy was anything but dishonest and had a 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all' policy. Sandra deserved any complement he could possibly offer so Devin did not hesitate to give them to her whenever he felt the urge. They might have been redundant or overused but it was simply his nature. There was a small chuckle at the back of his throat, an amused gleam in his eye. "I'm not the adorable one here," The blonde pointed out quickly, ruffling up his hair as though dismissing her comment. "But at least one person in this relationship has enough adorable-ness to cover us both." The word 'relationship' was still a fairly new word he used in their conversations, but he enjoyed it a lot. After Autumn and the girls he had encountered in the past Devin wondered if he would be able to find someone. Sandra had been around the entire time. Funny how things worked out. "Yep, swimsuits are good! Nude beaches would just...I don't think I would ever be on one." That would be straight up awkward and just no.
Devin quirked an eyebrow. "If you say so." He never considered himself to be cute, really, but if Sandra thought so then he would roll with it. His confidence usually stemmed from the drunk girls he hung around, so it was nice to hear it from someone completely sober, who wanted him for him. "It doesn't have to be fancy. I'll like anything you make. I eat just about anything." Which he did. The boy could be a human garbage disposal if given the chance. "I haven't forgotten! Cheeseburgers it is. I can pay you in kisses too, if you want." The smirk playing on his features flickered; one moment it was there, the next it was gone. He was also not too ashamed to toss in a little eyebrow wiggle.
Sandra was right on that one; out of any element, Fire was the last one Devin could possibly be. There was little to no temper and he had the patience of a saint. Not to mention he hardly ever felt comfortable raising a fist, even to an assailant. Nope, never a Fire. "At least it's warming up for you! It would suck if you got too cold. But at least we would have other things to do." Like eat their picnic and lay around on the sand being lazy. That was a pretty constant thing, he thought, but did not mind it in the least. Devin enjoyed the fact that they had quite a bit in common. It helped. The flash of mischief continued to hold itself steady in his gaze, a sort of 'do you dare me?' look. Would Devin really dunk his girlfriend underwater? No. Water elemental or not, that would be downright mean and not much of that existed in someone like him. So focused on what he was doing, in fact, that he somewhat managed to ignore her little exclamation of an epic water fight and the squeal that came after. "I'm not a sore loser!" He laughed, enjoying having her so close. He definitely didn't mind her holding on to him. "Oh, wouldn't I?" Devin replied. "I mean...I could change my mind if you give me a good reason to.." Bribery was not something he condoned but this was all in fun.

She laughed at the way he said that, as if college was some kind of cult or gang that she'd never be able to come out of. This would have probably been otherwise deeply worrying, but she was pretty sure Devin wouldn't have had that in him, and it was after all just college. There was no shortage of people she knew who'd been through the whole deal and graduated and moved on with their lives without being shadowed by any kind of shady past involving cult members and sketchy criminal behaviour. "But but... the future is stupid," she said, pouting a little. Though she knew that if she attended the Academy for college (and she probably would, being so comfortable there) there probably wouldn't be much that changed in her life, it was still really weird. College was like, a world beyond, man. Woah. She didn't like to think about these things and about school and work and life in general. "But the future is just a little less stupid if it means I get to sleep in," she added after second thought, smiling. She brightened and grinned more hwen he smiled. "I know. Having fun is a struggle, Dev, I know," she said, just giggling when he looked like he was about to break facade. Acting serious was hard.
Sandra just shook her head. "That's what you think," she said, sighing softly as if exasperated with him, but she was pretty sure that she pretty much couldn't be. She adored the boy, shush. She was allowed. "Mhmmm, but I'm pretty sure it's not me. Just accept my compromise!" Sandra smiled, tugging his hand away from his head and lacing their fingers together for a brief second. The word "relationship" just made her all kinds of happy, and it showed on her face, much the same way it probably did when she said or heard the word "boyfriend" and realized all over again that it was Devin. Then again, she was kind of a girl who didn't spend all that much time thinking about proper real life things like normal people did. "Uh... yeah. Definitely not," she agreed, shaking her head a couple of times, reinforcing this. Nude beaches were a no-go. That was all the beaches in the South of France ruled out. "I do! And I don't lie!" That was pretty much the truth. She was a really bad liar and didn't like to, out of principle -- joking around was more than okay but on the whole, in any kind of seriousness, lying just wasn't something that she could or wanted to do.
Though her cooking skills probably left much to be desired, she could make a semi-decent meal, even though she actually didn't cook most of the time. It was a mixture of laziness and just... really... a lack of a need to. She and Matthew usually had dinner together at home anyway, and she'd wait for him to get home for it because... well, they just did that, they always had with their parents. "You sound so sure," she said, tilting her head to the side a little at him, but the smile on her face gave her away. Sandra was glad he had so much confidence in her, anwyay, even if it was just a matter of not being picky. They probably had that much in common. "Whaaat?" she whined, her mouth falling open in pretend surprise. "I thought I just got those for free! Do you pay all the people you hire in kisses?" The eyebrow wiggle was too much, though, and she couldn't help but burst out laughing.
That was one of the things that she couldn't do as a Water elemental, warm it up. She'd heard that she could cool it down if she learnt to, in college, but that was... well, the future. Obviously she wasn't quite there yet, and frankly, Sandra was okay with taking it at her own pace. Either way, there was nothing she could do about the temperature of this water except wade around until she got used to it, and luckily that didn't take long. "Yeah, food and stuff. Oh, and don't let me forget I got you something!" The smile on her face was almost mischievous but... maybe wasn't quite there yet. It wasn't like his gift really was a trick or something. Having been picked up, she squirmed a little bit more, but she wasn't fighting it all that hard, obviously. She didn't exactly consider her boyfriend a very dangerous person. "Noooo, you wouldn't," she said, pouting, before correcting herself. "I don't think you would... Do it if you can!" She worded it like a challenge, sticking her tongue out at him a little bit before proceeding to snuggle up to him, attaching herself so that he probably literally wouldn't have been able to. Sandra was so not giving this up without a fight... or a... something.

He smiled at his girlfriend and nodded a little, clearly amused. The future did seem pretty stupid sometimes, he had to agree. Unfortunately everyone had to grow up and time did not stop for anyone and...well, all of those age old sayings that no one liked to hear. He felt the same way that Sandra did though, at least to an extent. That was where he and his best friend differed greatly and Devin did have to wonder how they forged such a strong friendship when they were so vastly different. "Sleeping in is probably the greatest graduation present you can ever receive," He said wistfully, looking up towards the sky. Despite his family waking him up so abruptly in the morning he was feeling chipper and energetic because he managed to doze back off, and it was his birthday, and he was with his girlfriend. So many positive things! Devin sniffled a little bit. "Yeah, it's so incredibly difficult...I dunno if I can do this! Having fun seems just out of my reach." He dramatically reached forward, grasping for nothing before breaking character. Really, when was the kid ever serious? Especially with things like this.
"I don't think often, but yeah, that's what I think." Devin gave her a rather goofy, lopsided grin. He always managed to make hits at himself and his intelligence even though he was very smart. He always tended to down play it out of habit, and old habits die hard. He sighed a little and tried to look disgruntled with her 'forceful' compromise, but could not even manage that. "Fine, fine," There was a chuckle accompanying his words, his fingers squeezing hers for those brief moments they were meshed together. He even went the extra few inches to give her a kiss. He did not want to dwell on the nude beaches because so many uncomfortable pictures flashed in his mind's eye, like grotesque women or really fat men lounging about...ugh. No. He just couldn't. Instead of replying he merely shivered and let that moment pass. "I know you don't! Or well...if you do lie, then I'm oblivious to it. But I don't like to question people anyway." That took too much effort, to try and decipher if someone was telling the truth or not. Sometimes it was easy, other times it was not worth wasting time pondering.
Anyone was bound to have better cooking skills than Devin did, at least he thought so. When he lived alone it was fast food and easy meals that you shoved in the microwave, which did not take much brainpower or effort. Everything was already done for you, except for making it hot enough to eat. "I'm surely sure," He replied with a firm nod, the smile on his face nearly matching hers. It was so hard not to laugh when Sandra started to whine, and even more difficult to try and make his smile go away. She was just so damn cute! Devin adored her. "Well...well, you do get the kisses for free! I'll just give you extras! Or something. The cheeseburgers are your payment and the kisses are like a Christmas bonus that you can redeem at any time." Like Christmas all year around, which would be pretty nice. He liked the holidays and now that he had someone to share it with he was even more eager to get to that point. "You are the only person that gets kisses from me, I swear it on...uh. My life. Yeah, my life." Because Sandra really was the only person to receive his affections. He may have slept around when he was single but dating someone was a bit different.
Devin's face lit up, a boyish expression lining his features. "Aww, you are so sweet! You didn't have to get me anything though. You know that right?" He loved gifts as much as the next person but even so Sandra had gone out of her way to make him food and spend the afternoon with him. That was a great gift in his opinion.
It was in picking Sandra up that he realized how light she was. Like a feather. That made him all the more conscious of how he held her just in case. He did not want to accidentally hurt her or something. She was probably tough but as the boyfriend Devin was a bit against harming her. The spark of mischief was certainly evident in his blue eyes. "You harbor way too much trust in me, my dear," He said with a dramatic flair, tensing his muscles as though he were prepared to drop her. "But I suppose I could--" Devin chuckled as she stuck out her tongue and clung tightly to him; really, what was he supposed to do now? He simply did not have the heart to drop her into the water or throw her. Instead he decided to just hold her there, smiling warmly at her before wading a little further into the water. "You know my weakness now. I could never throw a beautiful girl into the water like that, especially when said girl is my girlfriend. That would just be wrong." So incredibly wrong. He did not even have the heart to go under water with her in his arms as an alternative! "Feel free to hold on as long as you want by the way. I don't mind."

Now that she thought about it, sleep was very important to Sandra, and there were few gifts that she could think of that could even possibly be better. Well, there were a couple things that were still in the running, but getting to sleep in every day would be glorious. "Probably," she said, looking almost dreamy and out-there for a second. That really was such an appealing thought. "Can't think of anything better off the top of my head! Except maybe a lifetime supply of pizza." That would definitely be in the running, along with maybe a handful of other things, but sleeping and eating were what Sandra did best, after all! "But you have to try," she said, her voice almost whiny but it was ruined by a little bit of giggling. "You can do it! You can have fun! I believe in you!" Then she was laughing too hard to function properly and she waved a hand for him to stop with his dramatic hand-reaching. Oh jeez. They were really bad at this whole being serious thing.
Considering that she knew her boyfriend was actually a pretty intelligent guy, she just smiled and shook her head lightly at the comment about not thinking often. "That's not true, but you're silly," she told him matter-of-factly. "You're a smart guy, you should be able to see this for what it is!" She had no shortage of confidence or sureness in herself and who she was, which was an unfortunate difference between herself and Devin. Gotta work on that. She was determined to get him to see these things even if it took forever. A goofy grin remained on her face after he kissed her, her cheeks even a little faintly pink still. It wasn't that the affection ever made her uncomfortable anymore, definitely not, but there was something very special about Dev, for sure. "So adorable," she mumbled at him, trying to stop smiling so much like a doofus, but of course it didn't work out too well for her. She was just a smiley person all around and with her boyfriend it was amplified probably about seven trillion times. "Nah, you'd know if I tried to lie," she told him very honestly. Sandra was a pretty horrible liar. "But luckily I never do! And especially not to you, ever." He wouldn't even have a need to question her, she didn't think at least. She'd just be upfront with him about everything, not that she had secrets to keep anyway.
She just smiled at his words. "Are you sure that you're surely sure?" Oh gosh, that had potential to be the start of something terrible, but luckily (or unluckily, depending on how she looked at it) Sandra was easily flustered and confused and so she wouldn't be able to last anyway even if they did try to keep it up. "Awww, well... that's a cute Christmas bonus!" she said, won over by the idea immediately. Sandra was easily sold in that sense. She tried to think of something potentially clever to say in return but there was nothing, and besides which his next comment had her smiling like a loon again anyways and she just couldn't stop. "Mmmm, I believe you," she said softly amidst the soft giggling that had for some reason ensued again. She really did trust him, though, and she gave him a quick peck on the lips to show that. "Merry Christmas," she said with a laugh and a failed attempt at an eyebrow wiggle. She was having fun, though, and her smile was mischievous.
Sandra definitely hadn't minded going "out of her way" to do things for him for his birthday, not in the slightest, but even if she had, it was all made worth it when she saw the look on his face. God, he looked so happy. It just made her grin wider. "I know I didn't have to, but it's your birthday! And I'm here anyway and... I hope you like it, though," she added as an afterthought. She'd tried to make sure it wasn't something he already had, and was also something he'd even like, but she couldn't read his mind after all, long as she'd known him.
He was being so dramatic, and it made her laugh ridiculously and shake her head, which wasn't easy to do from the position she was in, half-pressed against him now that he'd picked her up. "No, I think I have just the right amount of trust in you," she rebutted, shaking her head, nervous for a fraction of a second as he tensed his muscles before she remembered this was Devin and he really would never do such a thing. Because it was just water and she wasn't a shabby swimmer at all she probably wouldn't have minded even if he had, but it was good to know that he wouldn't all the same. "Mhm, and I will exploit that weakness forever," she said with a very fake air of triumphance. Sandra could never muster enough mean manipulation to exploit any weakness of anyone's, let alone someone she liked so much. "And okay. But you can put me down whenever, you know, you don't have to carry me around all day," she said with a laugh, letting her arms fall away so that she was no longer essentially clinging. She just leaned agains thim a little instead, fully prepared to be dropped into the water if he did randomly decide that he wanted to do it. "Not that I'd mind, but you'd probably get tired after a while. And today's all for you to be happy!" She nodded -- again a difficult task when leaning against him. This day really was all his, though, so she just hoped he was having a good time.

Yum, pizza. Why did they have to talk about food right now? I mean, sure, they were going to eat eventually but Devin loved finding reasons to eat and mentioning one of his favorite junk foods was not helping in the least. "It's like you're inside of my mind," Devin said, expressing a little awe at his girlfriend. "Are you sure you aren't a super hero? Because I think you have mind reading powers." Not that it was hard to read the guy; it was easy to tell when he was in a good mood or tired or even perturbed by something, though he would tell anyone that nothing was really wrong. Sandra was one of the very select few that could ask him if he was okay and he would give an honest answer. That revelation surprised him a little. He burst out into a fit of laughter, only encouraged by her own. "I'm glad," He managed between attempts to catch his breath, "I'm glad that you believe in me. I need at least one person to have unwavering faith in my ability to have fun." The fact that she had faith in him at all was wonderful.
He flashed her a bright grin and chuckled, ruffling up his hair a little bit. The kid was not stupid by any means but downplaying his intelligence was an automatic reflex ordeal. "I'm definitely silly, for sure," He agreed with a nod. "But smartness? Nah. I do know my colors and shapes and I can count to one hundred though." Serious matters were always taken with sensitivity and such but when Devin knew he could get away with being light and joking he was bound to do it. He loved the fact that her cheeks were pink and she was smiling; that was all the assurance he needed. It was proof that Sandra was happy and that was most important. "You are too," He replied back, rubbing his nose with hers briefly. It was incredibly hard for him to avoid giving the girl affection when she was so goddamn cute. Some people might have thought him to be a bit too mushy but he did not care. So long as Sandra wasn't bothered that was all that mattered. "That's good, I'm glad you don't. And I would never lie to you either. I'm an open book, babe, never hesitate to ask me whatever you want!" No matter how dirty his past was there was no way in hell he would hide anything from her. That was not how relationships worked, and even Devin knew that.
At her question, the boy merely nodded and refrained from laughing again. They would probably live out the rest of their relationship going back and forth. Forever complementing one another and saying that one was better than the other, or even being indecisive about decisions that needed deciding on. "I thought so!" He chirped, looking proud of the idea. Sounded like a pretty nice bonus to him, for sure. Devin liked the kissing, the affection. It was nice to know that she seemed to enjoy it too. That would be incredibly awkward if she didn't, or just received the affection and never said anything. Sandra said she didn't lie about things though. He trusted her on that.
"I'm glad you do," Devin half muttered, trying to fight back the wide smile that wanted to break free on his face. It was hard to hold back when she was giggling and smiling and being...well, Sandra. The smile finally pushed out full force after she kissed him though. His eyes looked a bit distant as he looked at her. "I really like Christmas. It definitely needs to be all year 'round...yep. And we should shower one another with gifts all the time! It'll be awesome." Essentially he was asking for more kisses. What? So they made his heart flutter and feel all warm on the inside. He enjoyed that feeling quite a bit. "I'm sure I'll love it. It'll be the best gift ever." The fact that she took time out of her day to get him something meant a lot. Outside of his sister and aunt there was never really a time he felt someone cared about him. Sandra made him feel like that all the time.
Out of anything, Devin loved trust. His friendships were placed in it, and he liked knowing that his friends were people he could count on for anything. Not that he went to them for every tiny issue; it was simply nice to know that if he did need a sort of support that they were around. "Mmm...if you say so," He eyed her for a moment. "It's a good thing, definitely! Just surprised, considering I could drop you at any moment." All he had to do was let go and she would plummet into the water. At least it was her element, right? She might try and use it against him or something, and that would be scary. Even if she were playing, Devin was not quite sure how he would respond to that. He was fail at defending himself even when it was playful, apparently. He frowned. "But what if I want to carry you around all day? What would you do then, hm?" Sandra wasn't heavy at all and it was not like she was fighting against him. After a while he might grow tired but in the water? Nah. Devin's gaze drifted down to her face once her arms loosened around him, his lips meeting her forehead. "I am completely and totally happy right now. You don't have ta worry about that." Then he thought for a moment. "Though I am a little hungry...are you up for eating? We can just chill here for a while longer if you want, I'm up for anything!"

Sandra loved food, and this was one of the things that she and Devin had in common. Food and laziness were good commonalities, she thought, even though it wasn't like these things were extremely rare things. Hey, whatever -- despite that, the two of them did it better... or something like that. She didn't often try to rationalize her thoughts, and this was probably why. They just didn't make very much sense. "Nope, not a superhero," she said, laughing and shaking her head. "Dating one, though. I'm sure you've heard of him. He's like... the coolest." She waved her hands around a little bit to try to explain her point -- about Captain Canada being really cool -- but it probably didn't work. That was okay. Devin probably got the gist of it. Their laughter a few moments later proved that none of the conversation really made that much sense anyway. "And if you need help I'll always be here to help you. I'm like, the master of having fun." Oh yes -- much like she was the master of napping, or of having a bottomless pit for a stomach.
It wasn't surprising, really, to hear him say these things, because it was so in character for him that it was actually a little ridiculous, but Sandra just pouted for a second. "Silly and smart," she insisted still, scrunching her face up a little and pinching his cheek softly. "And knowing your colours and shapes and numbers are very smart things. S'better than me," she joked, a grin on her face, just rolling with it now rather than arguing with him (if anything they did could ever be considered an argument). Sandra wasn't dumb, and neither was Devin -- they were just both really... really lazy. "What number comes after 'C' again?" She only went more red when he rubbed their noses together, but her giggling now would indicate that this wasn't a bad thing at all. She liked all the fluffy feelings. "Good! I won't be. Not that I was before," she told him, smiling a bit. "But that's always good. I don't think there's much I need to ask you about, though. Unless you happen to know the meaning of life." These were the philosophical questions that needed answering.
The distant, almost daydreamy look on his face puzzled her for a second before he started talking, and then she just laughed. "You mean it's not Christmas all year round? That's a shame," she said, trying her best to look genuinely disappointed. She had never been good at acting, though. It probably just came out at a couple notches less happy than usual... which was still really happy, honestly, because being around this boy just gave her more mushiness than she could even handle. "Well, luckily I still get a redeemable year-round Christmas bonus, right?" Yes she did, and she intended to take advantage of this... even though really they were both such affectionate people already that she was pretty sure it wouldn't even make much of a difference in reality. She certainly wasn't complaining if it did.
When she caught his eye she just grinned, looking kind of mischievous for a moment even though she had no reason to be, realistically. She was the one being carried away here -- he could do anything, drop her at any moment, and she wouldn't be able to do anything! Well, she could do a good number of things about it, but she really wouldn't. She knew that he wouldn't do anything, though. That was the nice part of things. "You could, but that's what the trust is for! I know you won't do it," she told him matter-of-factly, smiling kind of cheekily. If Devin weren't such a kind soul she'd probably be asking to be dropped in the water with that comment, but that probably wasn't likely to set him off at all. She would be scared if he ever somehow became furious. "Then I guess I'd have to let you do whatever makes you happy," she said without giving it much thought. "Though I don't know why carrying someone around all day would make you happy, but I can't say no to that faaace." He really was so cute even if he was no longer as baby-faced as he had been just a few years ago, something that always made her giggle and squeal a little whenever she happened to see a picture. (Checking out his old pictures on Facebook recently? No, of course not. ...It wasn't as creepy as it sounded! She stalked everyone on Facebook when she was bored!)
"Good. Me too," she mumbled, closing her eyes for a second, perfectly prepared to fall asleep there if given the opportunity. The girl could fall asleep most anywhere. It was a skill regardless of what anybody else said. She didn't really want to fall asleep on him, though, because she'd feel bad if he really did wind up being forced to carry her back to the beach from where they were out in the water. When he spoke again after just a second, she opened her eyes again, nodding a little bit. "Yeah, we should eat if you're hungry! But I'm comfy. So whatever you want to do is fine -- your day, remember?" Even if he refuted this she was going to keep saying it anyway. "But if we're eating you don't have to carry me back," she added after a second, giggling a bit. "Or you're just going to make me lazy. Or lazier, I mean." Sandra didn't mind being carried around at all, of course -- partly because she really was lazy, but mostly because of the actual physical closeness that it allowed.

Although Devin knew exactly what Sandra was talking about, he still wore a confused look on his face and acted like this said 'super hero' she was dating was someone separate from himself. Of course he was no hero; Devin was the farthest from being the type to fight for...well, anything. "You're dating him? I mean, I know I'm not the toughest guy out there but I'll definitely fight him to get you to date me instead." It was then that he gave her a smile, one to prove that he was joking and to show how difficult it was for him to even pretend to be emotionally hurt. Still, he did not think he would make an effective Captain Canada at all. "Hmm...well, then I'm the master of laziness. Fun and lazy working together, side by side to make the world a better place." Because there really was no other combination more awesome or amazing than fun and lazy.
"I dunno," Devin looked a bit unsure, tapping his chin as he thought. "Is it really possible for me to be both? I know how to be silly but..." Always downplaying his intelligence like it did not exist. He was good at memorizing, good at math, good at solving problems. It was simply that he did not brag or boast about his capabilities. With Sandra he felt safer doing so but for now he was just teasing. Devin frowned. "No, not better than you. You're incredibly smart. Smart and beautiful is a pretty epic combination if I do say so myself." Beauty and brains was incredibly attractive, at least he thought so. Sandra was by no means stupid. "I think the letter purple." He said with a chuckle. One, two, c, purple...they were bound to graduate at the top of their classes this year! He poked her nose affectionately and gave her a sweet, simple smile before glancing a couple of people who went by on what seemed to be a daily jog. "I actually do know the meaning of life! I think it has something to do with food...and happiness...and stuff." Anything that brought a smile to his face, really. That included his girlfriend, family, friends, food, video games, and plenty of other things too.
Devin shook his head and sighed with longing, a wistful sort of frown that could only be retained for a few seconds. "I'm sorry I...I didn't want to tell you but I didn't want you to live a lie. I can make it Christmas all the time though! Like magic." He wiggled his fingers for dramatic effect, trying his best to make this sound believable. These two seriously would not do well trying to be in some sort of TV drama or a play where they were required to force fake tears or be extremely sad. They were too smiley for their own good. Devin laughed and nodded. "Yep! Redeem at any time, however many times you want." That meant more kisses for him and frankly he would not mind that in the least. They felt real, and honest, and to know that Sandra truly enjoyed them made the boy incredibly happy. She was a very special person in his life and her feelings and opinions mattered greatly. Especially when it came to things between them.
He was not intent on dumping his girlfriend into the water, at least not without giving her a heads up. He simply did not have a mean or hurtful bone in his body; no fists, no harsh words, no yelling. His temper was basically non-existent. The only person that ever brought out his anger was Lauren, and that was entirely justified. She did abuse him after all. He sighed. "You know me all too well," Devin admitted, tightening his grip on her. She was one of the few people that did know him well, aside from Josh and possibly Nell. His personality could be fairly predictable in some cases but there were little quirks and oddities that only his friends knew and understood. He wanted Sandra to go past that though. She was more than a friend and deserved an entirely different level of trust. "Damn straight." He said with a nod, smiling brightly at her. Doing what made him happy kept the stress levels down. It was nice. The smile became a bit more cheeky at her 'face' comment. "It's just so cute, I know. No one can resist it's adorable charms!" When he was younger he looked even less of a threat than he did now, which was saying something. There was a bit more muscle now, he could maybe hold his own if he tried, but that was the problem. He never tried.
It was nice to know that Sandra seemed to enjoy his affection, even if it was very frequent. He couldn't help it! The girl was just so adorable and he admired everything about her and felt that the best way to display his feelings was with complements and physical affection. His eyes lit up a little bit when she agreed to getting a hold of the food that she brought, his stomach actually starting to grumble at the thought. "Then onto food!" Devin said, turning around and making way back to the shore before Sandra spoke up again. He could only look down at her with a smirk. "Psh, too late. I'm already making my way back so you'll just have to put up with me carrying you." He did not think she would argue but he decided to state it anyway. When he got back to their towels and clothes, Devin set his girlfriend down on her towel and plopped down next to her with a content sigh. "Alright, so let's dig in! I'm starving." What else was new?

Stupid and cheesy as it sounded, Devin was very much a hero to Sandra, at least, even if he wasn't really running into burning buildings to rescue orphans and climbing trees and snatching up trapped kittens on high branches. He didn't need to do all of that, it was more that he was... ugh, strong in the face of danger or something, Sandra didn't really get it but she did know that it was what she thought, so take that, the rest of the world. She knew what she was doing. (She had no idea what she was doing, but at least she was happy.) "I mean, you are cuter than him," she said, making like she was actually trying to make a difficult decision. Luckily this was a decision she'd never have to make -- she had both. "Mm, fun and lazy is the best combo," she told him with a furtive nod. "Because then you get to do nothing and play video games and take naps all day."
She looked almost personally offended at his statement even though she was well aware that he was not at all stupid, and she was pretty sure that he knew it too. If not, well... then she doubted she was very intelligent either, if the standards were that high. "It's possible if I say it is! And I do say it is. So yes. You're smart and silly. And we can throw cute in there too." Devin was all of those things, right? Yes, most definitely. She just shook her head a little bit at the compliment, though it was more in a flattered way than anything else. Who was she to turn down people's honest compliments? She figured they were honest, at least. "Well, not too much of either, but thanks!" she chirped, the smile wide on her face. "And you are too. Smart, I mean. And beautiful." Inside and out. That just felt way too cliche to say, though, even if it was true -- her boyfriend was not only obviously attractive but also probably one of the nicest people she'd ever met... ever. "We're so boss at counting. Look at how well we're doing!" They were really so terrible at this being serious thing... and academics were just ridiculous for both of them, even though they could admittedly be alright if they tried harder. (The problem was the "trying" part. It would require expending real effort.)
"Food and happiness seems right to me! And stuff. Stuff is very important," she decided, nodding. That was pretty much all Sandra really wanted -- happiness. Luckily she had plenty to spare -- she was very much content with life. The look on Devin's face would have made her sad if it were at all serious, but she couldn't even begin to imagine that it might be before he seemed to return to normal, as seemed to be the norm for both of them. She tried her best at a sad, serious expression but probably failed miserably. "Christmas all the time sounds amazing," she had to admit with a small nod. "Like the Christmas Wizard! Or something. You're not Santa, are you?" She was pretty sure Santa was much older and larger and had a red nose from being nipped at by those silly North Pole winds all the time, but then again Sandra was no expert. Devin and Santa Claus were at least both happy, Christmas-loving people. Sandra wiggled her fingers back at him with a laugh. "That's quite the bargain, isn't it," she asked, but it came out more like a statement than anything else. She was pretty sure she'd still be affectionate towards the guy even if this conversation had never happened, but even so, the thought was nice.
She just settled comfortably against him, reaching up a hand to play idly with his hair when she heard him sigh. "Or I've just known you too long," she suggested, but she was smiling. "Not that I'm complaining, though. What's it been, like... three, four years?" It'd been something like that anyway, and she was glad for all of that time, building up to now. Even in a relationship it had been months already, which was ridiculous. "Seriously, how could they? You'd have to be heartless to be able to say no to that," she said, laughing and poking his cheek. Sandra would probably worry that she was just overfeeding the ego, but she didn't really think there was much of an ego to feed, not that she would have really minded. Her boyfriend could probably use a confidence boost, but then again she was probably a little bit biased.
The prospects of food were pretty awesome, and she smiled brightly as ever even as she let him carry her around still. Was that necessary? Of course not -- she was lazy but not that lazy. He seemed to be enjoying himself doing it for reasons she couldn't possibly understand, though, but she didn't want to stop him -- she liked the contact. "Yes, food! The best. Food and naps." Left to her own devices, these were the only two things Sandra would probably need, socializing and things aside. If she had to include those things as well Devin was pretty high up there on the list of people she'd want to be stuck in a locked room with. Alone she'd probably just sleep until someone came ot get her. She shook her mind from its own strange, strange tangents when he spoke up again. "I guess I can deal with that. If I have to," she said, laughing a little bit, unable to sound even a little bit exasperated with him. It was impossible.
She rubbed her arms once she was put down, the cold air making her miss his body warmth, but that was typically what happened after getting out of the water anyway and she just pulled the basket towards her instead. "So, so, I made like... these pizza bread things. And potato salad," she said excitedly, pulling the things out as she mentioned them. The pizza bread was, uh... exactly what it sounded like actually, a sliced-up baguette from the store with cheese and toppings and such on top that she'd stuck in the toaster oven. "And I made like, a mini-cake, but I'm sorry it's kind of like... lopsided." Sandra gave him a sheepish smile. She wasn't much of a baker... or a chef, actually. She was good enough to make passable meals and keep herself alive! Her brother complained every time she cooked anything, but he just liked to give her a hard time, and this was fair in exchange for her getting to bug him. Either way he wasn't there right now and she hoped that Devin, at least, would be happy with the offerings, but it was after all his birthday and hopefully it was a good one. "So um, you know. Dig in and everything," she said, a tiny smile on her face as she eyed him for signs of approval (rather than disgust or possible "I think I just got food poisoning from that", which would be bad, very bad).

The smile on his face turned rather cheesy but sheepish. "Oh, okay well as long as I'm more attractive then I guess I can handle a bit of competition with him." He was probably the least competitive guy on this planet and--although he cared about Sandra a lot--it would be difficult for him to try and fight to keep her around. At least this was all to be silly and stupid because otherwise Devin would be a mess trying to figure out how to keep his girlfriend from chasing after another guy. "Ohh, video games." His face lit up like a kid opening a Christmas present. "Yeah that sounds like a pretty epic way to spend the rest of my life, actually." Food, naps, video games, and his girlfriend. That sounded like a good deal to him.
People had complemented him before; Devin had a wide circle of friends and there were conversations where people said he was smart or nice or they liked him for one reason or another, but hearing it from Sandra probably meant ten times more than anything they had to say. He would never disregard them, no, but if he was feeling low he knew he could count on his girlfriend to boost him up. "You really know how to make a guy feel special." He commented with a smile. She made him feel like he was on top of the world. It was a shame that she tried to divert the complement he attempted to give her and Devin could not help but frown at her. "Hey. Yes you are! Don't even try that with me Miss Chang or I'll have to make you believe it." If he had to tell her every single day (not that he already didn't, but whatever) and draw it in the sky somehow or write it in a poem, then you could be sure that he would. He always thought Sandra was a beautiful girl. No denying that one. "We're doing so amazingly well! I mean...people are going to consider us the Einsteins of this generation." That was a semi-scary thought considering how little drive they had to get much of anything done.
"Stuff is the most important thing in the world," Devin agreed with a nod. Not really; he really just wanted happiness and contentment with life, which he already had. He and Sandra were so much alike and there were times that he did not even take notice. When he did take into account their similarities it often times stunned him to think that there was someone else in this world who had the same outlooks he did. Devin could not help but laugh at the 'Christmas Wizard' comment, and attempted to shake his head at the same time. "No, but I wish! That would be awesome. Though I don't think I'm Santa...unless Santa has some sort of age reversal machine and managed to lose all that weight." He patted his belly for emphasis. He was lazy but Devin certainly wasn't fat or overweight. Teenager metabolism would save him for the time being. All of this was so silly, but hey it was a bargain he could definitely live with. Christmas all year round with Sandra and kisses and affection and all the goodness that came with it. That made the boy oh so happy.
He thought on her question for a moment, trying to come up with an actual amount of time but was distracted by her hand in his hair. Damn the physical contact, the kid couldn't focus on anything to save his life. "Mmm," He hummed happily in his throat before trying to offer her an actual answer. If you wanted to silence Devin Thatcher all it took was...well, this right here. "Four years, I think. Wow, it's been a long time huh? Never thought we'd uh..." He searched her face for a minute before smiling. "Well not that I didn't think you were pretty and sweet and stuff. Just...yeah." His past was different. Having relationships was not easy for someone who feared having the attachment and then the other person ripped away from him, or the other person leaving. He made an exception for Autumn, and that failed, but it helped him realize that maybe he needed to try for something like that again. Sandra had been with him for around five months now. For Devin that was a long time. He managed to focus fully on her again, but it took a minute or two to get there. "It would be like saying no to a puppy sitting out the rain, right? You just can't deny the face."
Sandra was so incredibly adorable, Devin thought with a fond chuckle as she talked about food and naps. Although she loved to nap way more than he did, he didn't mind them in the least. Procrastination at its best, really. Anything to put off the things he had to do. It was amazing that he still managed to hold a job. "Yep, you have to! There's no way out of it. You're forever attached to me." Forever was such an incredibly long time but Devin was not the type of person to anticipate something like this going sour unless given a reason. He watched as she rubbed her arms and frowned, not liking that she looked chilled, but before he could respond she grabbed for the basket. "Oh man. That sounds amazing," Devin was practically drooling over himself, anxious to eat. The cake was equally enticing and it was difficult to decide if he wanted to eat dessert first or be 'normal' and go for the pizza and then the cake. "Aww, you are so good to me. And lopsided doesn't mean it won't taste good! It just means it's unique." That was one bright way of looking at it. With a hungry gleam in his eyes, Devin took a bite of the pizza and gurgled a sigh of contentment. "Damn, that's really good. It really hits the spot! Thanks, beautiful." And with that took another bite, and yet another as he leaned back with his free hand and watched the water. "One of the best birthdays I've ever had," He muttered, finishing his pizza and exhaling.
