Ashley threw her suitcase on to the bed. It was defiantly bitter sweet being here. Tension at home had picked up so much since that she was really glad to get out however being stuck at a school with god knows how many other kids was going to be hell. Ashley had never been good with people her own age and didn’t expect being surrounded by them would make matters any better. The important thing, she reminded herself, was to master her powers and get out.
It was defiantly better that Ashley’s powers had come out like that of her mother instead of her father. Her mother was the powerful one, although distant Ash really looked up to her, her whole life. It was frightening being on her own for the first time but fear was weakness so she pushed it out of her mind. Ashley opened her suitcase and began to unpack it into the drawers to the left of her bed. They were a light colour of wood and fairly strong looking. She unpacked her cloths in the empty room, she let her mind wander. When will I get my schedule? she though while mindlessly organizing her things. Am I more likly to make friends or piss people off? I remember mom saying that everyone else who is the element of fire will be like me. I think that was supposed to comfort me but I’m an angry violent rebellious idiot.
Ashley was at the bottom of her bag, everything but a single crumpled piece of paper was unpacked. She lifted it up and looked at the crude scribbles on the paper. They were circles with sticks coming out of them, legs. It was a picture of her and a little girl done in brightly coloured crayons. Ashley taped the picture above her dresser and sighed.

”I’m gunna cut a bitch, I fucking swear I will,” Altair muttered as she stormed into the Fire dorms. The war was awesome when she didn’t have to put up with Water cunts, that was for damn sure. Earthies were good punching bags, and though she definitely was not quite as sadistic as she used to be, she certainly was violent. Wars were good for that. However, the downside was that the Water kiddies got uppity and thought that they could fuck with the Fires without repurcussions. It wasn’t only the pranking they had to deal with anymore—they could get violent too, easily setting off the Fires’ temper. Like Altair’s. Her temper wasn’t very hard to set off. Even though she tried to control it for the sake of staying out of trouble now that she was getting her shit together, it wasn’t something she could voluntarily controlled.
Altair shamelessly threw off her shirt as she headed to her dorms. It wasn’t uncommon in the Fire dorms, which were intensely heated so that it would be unbearable for the other elements. Altair, being as cocky and self-confident as she was, had no qualms about baring all. She was an ex-model and a stripper—she had little in terms of boundaries. She preferred the dorms over the apartment she shared with Rowena. Downtown was crap, and she’d rather not deal with the shithole. Even though she had to share her dorm, it was better than having to stare at peeling paint and water stains. Especially now that she had built up a tolerance for people. First coming to the Academy, she stuck close to her sisters, even though Rowena had been Water. Everyone else suffered her wrath. Now, she was more willing to keep her Fire under control. She brushed her white blond hair out of her eyes as she continued muttering, but an open door caught her eye.
She leaned against the dorm frame, arms crossed over her chest—bare save for her zebra print bra—as she regarded the redhead with an always-piercing gaze. ”You new?” she said, jutting her chin out to gesture to the suitcase. Altair didn’t seem very friendly—more critical if anything—but she was being less of a bitch than usual. ”Be careful around the dungeons. The Waters are hiding out.” She rolled her eyes. Didn’t they recognize the Fire pack mentality? Fuck with one, you fuck with all? Not being a kind person, this warning was just out of comraderie. She was developing the loyalty that all Fires tended to display. It just…took a while for them to pop up. ”Altair Bennett,” she said as introduction, not holding out her hand or anything. Just standing half-naked in the doorway still. She was the girl’s own personal welcome wagon.

Ashley spun around to see the girl in the door way. She seemed angry -furious actually- but at least she was making an effort at contact, that was more than Ashley was planning to do.[glow=red,2,300] “Ashley Roberts” [/glow]She responded trying to sound as emotionless and cold as possible, hoping it would make her appear less nervous or weak. She sat on the bed shaking her attention from the picture she had just hung so she could focus on the half naked girl in front of her.
Ashley didn’t really understand the point of the conflict within the school; sure she had heard of wars breaking out but never really understood the point. It would be so much simpler if everyone would mind their own god dammed business. Ashley had actually hoped to stay out of it all but just by the look on Altair’s face she realized that might not be an option.
[glow=red,2,300] “The waters are hiding out in the dungeons?” [/glow]Ashley asked. [glow=red,2,300]“Is that where you came from?”[/glow] There was no doubt in her mind that these things could become vicious, if there was any hope in making it through the next four years now might be the time to get as much information as possible about the social structure of the school. Was there some kind of code the groups went by? What do these wars consist of? There were so many questions but looking vulnerable was the last thing she wanted to do, especially with the first person she has met so far. Looking like an idiot just wasn’t an option.

Altair nodded slightly in acceptance of the name. The girl looked pretty young, younger than her at least, and she realized with bitterness that Ashley was probably either on or around the same grade as hers. She hated the fact that she was an underclassman at seventeen-years-old. In any case, she didn’t think too much on the girl’s apathetic response. Fire girls came in one model, she found—bitchy. And she was fine with that. At least they understood her blunt personality, when a lot of others couldn’t. It was strange, feeling this sort of comradery.
Watching Ashley as she sat on her bed, she nodded in comfirmation. ”They think they’re cool, but they’ll be smoked out soon enough,” she said with a snort. The Fires definitely weren’t going to be having a couple of Waters trolling around their territory for long. It was only a matter of time before they ganged up on them. ”Bloody tossers soaked my pack,” she said, taking out the cigarettes and showing them to the girl as she scowled. Altair incinerated them and dropped the ash in the hallway. ”Torched one of them pretty bad,” she commented, speaking of the Water students. Her sneer was one of victory, even though the other bastards got off without facing her wrath.
Turning back to Ashley, she said, ”First war, I’m guessing?” If she was just unpacking now, she had to be a new student. Altair certainly knew how that felt, enrolling late as a tenth grader. ”Do you even know what’s going on?” She didn’t mean that in an insulting way, she was simply asking. It was amazing how much better at conversation she was getting now that she wasn’t pissed off at the world. She could actually formulate sentences that didn’t contain curse words. For a moment, she wondered if this was a few months back whether or not she’d be pinned the girl against her bed and setting her hair on fire. She smirked at the thought and shook her head. Altair had bigger things to worry about in life, she realized, than fights not worth her time.

Ashley thought about the question’s the girl had asked. In this situation it really was better to get information and look like an idiot then be caught off guard later. She turned around before answering, going into one of drawers and retrieving a pack of smokes from the back corner. She tossed them on the bed signalling to Altair that she was welcome to take some.
[glow=red,2,300] “To be honest I really have no idea, I’ve started late in grade nine but I’m old enough to be in grade ten. Sure I have heard of the conflict but I was hoping to stay out of it“[/glow] Ashley closed the drawer and turned her attention back to Altair[glow=red,2,300] “I’m guessing that’s really not going to happen.”[/glow] Ashley thought, maybe this wasn’t as bad a thing as she thought. She had heard that the fires stuck fairly close together so backing down would just make her enemies.
Ashley closed her suit case and slid it under the bed. Everything was a way away so she felt a bit more comfortable. The issue she faced now was what to do next.[glow=red,2,300] “So I guess it’s apparent I’m gunna need some pointers, hell I don’t even know where my classes are. I get dropped off and abandoned it’s hard to believe I was able to find this place!”[/glow] She plonked herself down on the bed and stared at Altair. It was going to be hard to know who to trust so Ashley decided to trust fires, what other option did she have?

The older Fire girl looked at the smokes, then decided to pick them up and fish out a cigarette. She wasn’t one to take handouts, but it wasn’t like she absolutely needed cigarettes. Now if welfare was something she needed, no, she would not lower her pride for that. How far are we from it? Not like she and Ro were rolling in the cash. Hopefully, Altair would be able to get a better job than stripping and selling her body. She almost smirked at the thought. In her career, she’d certainly be selling her body—it was what she did best. Hopefully in a way like modelling, even though she wondered if she could achieve something like that again. No, she’d definitely be able to do it. All she needed to rely on was her looks and her ambition.
As Altair lit the cigarette with her own Fire, she listened to the girls words and then snorted, blowing out smoke from her nose. ”There’s no avoiding conflict,” Altair said with a smirk. The idiots who decided to be neutral were finding that out the hard way. People didn’t like neutrality in this, it meant painting a target on your back to do so. ”If you say you’re neutral, you’ll be attacked by those who want to show you how wrong you are for doing that. Hell, you’ll be attacked no matter what you do.” It’s why people were travelling in packs nowadays—she stuck close to fires, and her sister, of course. Anyone who decided to fuck with her had to deal with the two of them. It wasn’t like Rowena couldn’t stand up for herself, of course, so it didn’t mean that Altair was acting as a bodyguard.
It seemed that Ashley was finished packing, and Altair observed her through smoke. She didn’t offer any sympathy to the girl in the fact that she was abandoned in some way, because she didn’t do sympathy. ”I could help you out,” she said with a shrug. She wasn’t what one considered helpful, however, so she clarified, ”Folk walk around in groups now. Best not get caught alone, or you’re bloody dead. Haven’t got your schedule yet, I s’pose?” She flicked ash out into the hallway again, being respectful of the other girl. She wasn’t a complete monstrosity.

Ashley could tell that her new friend wasn’t thrilled with the idea of helping out a new face but was grateful for the help none the less. Now that she was finally unpacked she could head out and actually get organised with classes, not that she had any idea where she was suppose to go or how to get around anyone who might attack her since she would be alone if Altair changed her mind.[glow=red,2,300] “I haven’t gotten anything yet, like I said it’s lucky I was able to find my way here”[/glow] Ashley looked at Altair smoking beside her. there’s no way you can smoke in the dorms she thought and wondered just how strict this place was if people were smoking and starting wars with each other. It sure was a hell of a time to get enrolled.
With no way to avoid conflict Ash would need to learn her way around fast. The last thing she needed was to get cornered in some hallway somewhere. [glow=red,2,300] “I would appreciate the help if you’re willing to give it”[/glow] Ash said taking the girls shrug as Altair really not wanting to get involved. In her head she was really hoping that what she had heard about the fires was true, having people sticking together whether they like each other or not seemed like such an unreal idea. To team up and get the one thing they were all after was empowering. As self sufficient as Ashley was it would defiantly be a comfort.
[glow=red,2,300] “So how exactly do these wars go about? Do people basically use their powers to bully anyone they can find?”[/glow] It seemed like a simple enough concept to Ashley, but how does one side win the war? Would other students actually lower themselves to much as to give up? The idea was so foreign to her. [glow=red,2,300] “I have a shit ton of questions about this place, and the people... Are there any big things I should know right away? Like people to avoid or how to get a hold of more smokes?” [/glow]She said picking the box off the bed and stashing it back in her drawer. As afraid as Ashley was of looking like an idiot, answers and clarification were what was important right now. Even if she could find out the basics, it would be enough to help her figure the rest out on her own.

It wasn’t like Altair hadn’t been caught smoking in the dorms by leaders before, she just chose to keep doing it. She probably wouldn’t stop until they expelled her ass. That went for every delinquent behavior in her life, every reckless thing she’d ever done, drunk or sober. She and her sisters had never been in the loving arms of the law. She didn’t respond to the girls words—after all, Altair wasn’t one to carry on the conversation unless the other person seemed interested in it. Luckily, Ashley seemed like a capable person.
Altair didn’t like to be a tour guide, really, but she had time and she didn’t mind Fires as much as she minded other people in general. But her tolerance was a shifty thing and could change with the wind. ”Sure,” she said casually. ”Got time. Other Fires might be willing, too, I don’t know though. Nasty lot, we are.” She didn’t feel pity for Ashley being new and all, since Altair had been new this year too. She and her sisters stuck to each other like glue and Altair was unwilling to move outside of that circle of blood. And then they lost Syria—that had changed the game.
Even though she hadn’t been here long, Altair had come to figure out how wars went down quickly enough. ”Basically, yes,” she said with a snort. ”It’s starting fights for the sake of fighting. Wars just give us an excuse.” Altair wasn’t complaining at all. She lived for the fighting. ”’Course, the faculty like to interfere,” she said with a bit of a sneer. The detentions piling up were so fucking fun. And another thing that was fucking fun was questions. Altair actually managed to refrain from rolling her eyes, since she didn’t mind Ashley. It was just that the older girl was easily annoyed. ”Big things?” Altair reiterated before blowing out smoke. ”Gardens are the Earthies’ hangout. There are skeletons deeper in the dungeons. Waters love the lake, of fucking course.” She wasn’t too big on the whole tour guide thing, really, but she could hand over things that popped up into her mind. She just didn’t make it a point to come up with shit. And about the smokes… ”It’s about knowing the right people.” Altair could have told her that she was able to introduce her to those people, but helpfulness when it came to her only went so far. The only real time that she’d be able to introduce was at a party. It wasn’t like Altair ever planned to meet people. She didn’t go out on play dates and what not.

[glow=red,2,300] “It means a lot”[/glow] Ashley moved towards Altair listening to what she was saying. She knew how vicious fires could be, how her attitude effects others. Her parents were partially counting down the days until her powers had surfaced so they could ship her away. Especially after the incident with the dog house, then the incident with the dog. [glow=red,2,300] “Fighting for the sake of fighting, sounds fun” [/glow] Ashley commented in a slightly sarcastic tone. Although fighting was entertaining, if it’s going on all the time Ashley figured it must get exhausting. Having to watch your every move sounded like noting more than a big head ache.[glow=red,2,300] “Who might these right people be?”[/glow] Ashley asked. It was more curiosity than anything else, Ash’s attempt to keep the conversation alive. Important people were important but It was getting fairly late and Ashley needed to get her schedule in order and find her way around better.[glow=red,2,300] “do you mind if we head out? The sooner we go the sooner we can get back, I’m exhausted”[/glow] She asked. Ash decided to risk taking her smokes out of the dorm, if they were taken away how would she get more? How would she get more anyway?[glow=red,2,300] “By the way” [/glow]Ashley began[glow=red,2,300] “How exactly do you get a hold of things like smokes or booze around here?” [/glow]she asked heading out the door.

Altair snorted. Fighting for the sake of fighting was pretty damn good for her, but then again, she was one who lived for violence. She enjoyed fighting. Maybe Ashle wasn’t the same, to each her own. It didn’t make much of a difference to the older girl, currently scratching at the back of her white-blond hair, pinned up in a bun on her head, dampened slightly from the Water students. Bitches fucking with my bloody hair, I swear… Even her thoughts were vicious, most of the time.
Ashley asked about the people, and she wasn’t about to give the girl her contact list, because it didn’t really work that way. ”Talk to people,” Altair said, shrugging. Once you got to know people—even overhearing a conversation between them—you learnt who had what. ”When you start getting in, you can talk to anyone you want to find out who to go to.” That’s how everything traveled, through word of mouth. One day, Jeremy may have some bud, and Dan may be the one to go to if you want some good booze. ”Word of mouth is how everything travels.”
Pushing herself off from the wall, Altair uncrossed her arms. ”Let me grab a shirt, first,” she said, stubbing out the cigarette under her shoe as she went to her own dorm and slipped on a shirt. She returned to Ashley, the cigarette butt having been discarded, the older girl shrugged at her question as she led the way out of the dorms. ”Told ya, all you need is to associate with people.” Difficult sometimes, Altair knew, but it really was a good way to know what’s what. ”I’m sure we can find some people around.” Altair didn’t have a good many friends, simply acquaintances, but they were still a good way to get what she wanted. Her heels clicking against the floor, she asked her companion, ”So where would you like to hit up first?”

Word of mouth is how everything travels. Ashley repeated what the girl had said to herself. She knew from experience how fast things could travel. It takes mere hours for something to get around a simple grade school; she could only imagine what it would be like in a high school full of people with elemental powers who were at war. This was a good and a bad thing. Sure she could find out what she needed by talking to the right people but it also meant anything she did would be known by those right people not long after it happened. It certainly wasn’t an idea Ashley didn’t want to play with right now
“I guess the first step would be getting my timetable, finding out what classes I have.” Ashley thought that was a good place to start. She didn’t want to put a potential friend out, asking for too much was not a good idea. “Then maybe show me where my classes are?” She asked not thinking that was too bad. Ashley figured if she could at least manage to figure out the academics and the “Important” stuff she should be able to stay out of trouble until she met some more people and found her way around. Then she had all the time in the world to get in shit.

Altair didn’t have a clue that Ashley had little faith in the ‘word of mouth’ thing, but one would be surprised how much people talked when they were the right people. ”Main office, then,” she said rather curtly. It wasn’t her intention to actually be mean, it was just how she spoke and acted. Even though it wasn’t her goal to be a bitch, she acknowledged that she was one and accepted it. But she wasn’t about to change her personality, only tweak her lifestyle to better suit her current state of mind in caring for her family. Or rather Ro, since that was the only family she had. Nevermind the ‘parents’ they’d left back in Britain—Altair never even thought about those bastards anymore. But she did still think about her dead sister, at times that really inconvenienced her. The absence was still felt.
She led the way to the front office to retrieve Ashley’s schedule, not even forcing politeness to the people there. Altair did everything with a straight face or a frown and a surly demeanor. She handed it to Ashley, and asked the girl, ”Whaddya got?” Noticing how she slurred her words, she figured that she may have been spending too much time around Ro. The twins’ British accents varied greatly, actually, Altair retained her posh accent while Ro acquired a rather inner-city one. ”We’ve got a bit of time to look around.” It was why she even bothered, because she had nothing else to do and why not kill the time she had? No skin off her back. It was amazing that she could even be easygoing sometimes, but she was getting better. A little.

Ashley nodded and followed the now fully clothed girl into the halls of the school and down to the main office. She took mental notes as they walked through the warm busy halls. Everywhere they turned there were crowds of people. Cliques stared and whispered as they walked by, Ashley imagined them wondering why the hell she looked so lost so close to the end of the year. Ash tried to ignore it as she concentrated on where they were going. She noticed when they passed classrooms and bathrooms wondering what the halls looked like when they were empty. They were so wide and dark, it was also probable that the blazing heat came from the fires trying to get on peoples nerves. This would mean empty, the halls would be a cold haunting place. It intrigued and terrified Ashley at the same time.
The girls had finally arrived at the main office. Ashley took the schedule and read it carefully. She saw math, English, science; all the regular courses. At the bottom, being the last class of the day was a code she wasn’t familiar with. Ashley assumed it was a course to work on her elemental powers, this was after all a school to learn that kind of stuff. “Normal stuff, me elective is vocal music” Ashley let out a soft smile. It had been her grade nine elective as well. It was the one class she really enjoyed. A shley returned her attention to Altari Who had asked where they should go next. “Where ever you think is important.” Ashley shrugged “Maybe the lunch room or where my classes are?”

The Academy was a lot like public school in some ways. It hadn’t been long since Altair left the school system of Great Britain, but she remembered it enough to be able to compare. And that was because a lot of goods used to be part of that system before coming to the Academy and they kept the familiar ryhthms and ruts of their lives. The social circles, the chatter, the buzz and life of school. It was pretty much the same. Except when there was fights here, they got serious. Especially during a war. Right now the two girls were in a danger zone just by walking through the hallways. The older girl didn’t mind—she was perfectly content with fighting anyone who attacked her.
Altair could care less about the other’s elective and her fondness of it, so she just grunted in reply to show that she’d heard. It sounded like Ashley wanted to find out the locations of her classes, but since the other girl was lazy as it was, she took them to the mess hall. ”Hungry,” she said. Sometimes when she spoke, she was reminescent of a caveman. When they entered the massive hall and Altair went to get some food, she sent glares toward anyone who looked like they might want to start something as if daring them to come at her. Even when she was eating, she was ready for a fight. Even still, she sat down and ate the pizza, telling Ashley, ”Lemme see your schedule.”

Since Ash had grown up in a small town the school she attended was fairly small compared to this castle. There were only about three or four hundred students depending on the year. Even the high school she attended for grade nine only had around eight hundred students. Groups and cliques were small and tight a lot like the fires although back home people actually cared about each other, there were no vicious fights like there were here. Her old school didn’t even have more than a first aid kit.
Ashley could tell that Altair didn’t care about her courses but she did ask. Ash shrugged at the girls question. She wasn’t really hungry seeing as it hadn’t been that long since she last ate, she was however really thirsty. “sure” Ash said in a happier tone. It was a poor attempt of bringing her friends mood up with her own since she seemed to be getting bored. Once they were sitting and eating it was hard to miss the hostility in the room, it was hard not to be a little afraid since she was so new.
Ashley handed over the paper she had gotten though she wasn’t sure why. Altair clearly didn’t care and she had just told her what she had but who knows. She might want to check if they have any classes together or warn her about bad teachers. Whatever the reason it was handed over as Ashley sipped on her diet pop. There was something else Ash had wanted to ask since arriving but had been a little nervous to ask, a little afraid of the answer. Um... does the school have any electives that are working with children? Like a parenting course? Ash brought herself to ask. She was holding her breath without realising it while she waited for the girls responce.
