The world was scary sometimes, especially when she realized she wasn’t the only nobody in the strong grip of the law. She wasn’t the only one wrongly accused, the only one who had to suffer at a mother’s hand. It was almost comical to think that all this could have been avoided if she was richer and more influential in the community, if everything worked out perfectly. But that’s not how it was. Her family was the one with the affluence, the Fuenteses straddling the corporate ladder and knocking off that anyone else that tried to come close, and the Sinclairs who relied on their old money and indulged in criminal activity. She was damned both above ground and under it. If she thought about that, the world became much scarier than it already was. So she was basically clinging to friends like Ethan as if a life preserver—she was close to losing it all.
”I’ll deal,” she responded to Ethan, because they knew that they were glad for each other’s company. They wouldn’t be friends otherwise. And sure, Nell made friends easily enough since she loved people, but she reserved her reliance and trust for a few. Josh, of course, and Ari and Ace. Now Ethan, because he knew about her dirty little secret and that was a pretty big deal. So few people knew about her, and she liked it that way. She was afraid to even tell Ari, and that was her bestie. She felt like once people found out about her past, they’d view her as the terrible person she believed herself to be. Nell was a strong person, but that meant she needed people to rely on her. Without her friends, there was really no point. And people didn’t want to be friends with murderers. Or so she first thought. But here was Ethan, joking with her and in a good spirits, knowing that she had her own mother’s blood on her hands. Ethan approached her about it, but Josh had waited until she was ready, and either way she knew that the people like that were ones to keep around.
Nell nodded her agreement, and said, ”I am so envious of your badassery.” Yeah, because she was pretty scared to do anything like that and risk becoming a guinea pig for the government. She had enough problems with it already. ”You really shouldn’t encourage me,” she said playfully, even though it was true. Peer pressure be damned. Most people liked to have the approval of others, Nell included. She was definitely a people pleaser, which unfortunately made her easy to take advantage of. However, she was not gullible or stupid and she had her own beliefs that made her independent enough that she understood when she shouldn’t be doing something just because a friend told her to. That’s why she turned out to be the responsible one at parties—making sure her friends got home safe was more important than getting wasted. She laughed when Ethan covered his eyes and seemed oblivious to the world around him. Pulling her hands away, she told him, ”Come on, I want you to see this.”
Turning then, Nell tapped her fingers against her lips as she thought, brown eyes flitting around as she keenly observed the forests. ”All right, I think I might need some help from you,” she said mischeviously as she meerily walked up to the trunk of a tree and rested a hand against it. Even the bracelets on her wrists were natural, woven herself—the ring on her forfinger was stainless steel, however. Nell liked the feeling of being close to her element, which is why she enjoyed the forests she now stood in. Under her influence, a leafy vine dropped down from a high branch and she headed over to a nearby tree to climb. Looking around, she was glad to see the foliage wasn’t too thick, since it would be detrimental to what she was about to do. It was dangerous either way, but she was very reckless when wanted to be. After climbing up the tree across from the one with the vine, she called down to Ethan, ”Now, toss me the vine!” If she had climbed the same tree, she wouldn’t get a very good headstart for what she was about to do. She was certain that Ethan had caught on by now. Grinning, she said, ”And then get up here.” It was about to be a Tarzan moment indeed, and hopefully no one was aroudn to see.

Ethan grinned at Nell’s response, well aware that she was glad for his company. And maybe he wasn’t facing a life-altering trial in the near future, but he knew he needed friends like Nell anyways. Without having people who cared about you, there really wasn’t much of a point. His lack of friends as a kid made him even more appreciative of the close ones he had now. And he knew he’d stick by Nell no matter what happened. The guilt he had felt earlier on greatly subsided. He was actually glad he’d discovered that information from his friend. Now he could help Nell and support her. He knew he’d feel terrible if he found out later on and hadn’t done anything to help her. Maybe it wasn’t the best way to find out, but overall he was glad he did. Ethan figured the amount of people that knew about her situation was slim. The more people she’d have behind her the better, Ethan thought.
But he was glad that the afternoon’s mood did turn around. He knew how important the trial was but he also knew that forgetting about it for a while would be beneficial. Ethan was convinced that kicking back and leaving troubles behind was the best cure for anything. “Oh, you should be,
” he said with mock seriousness. “ I know, I’m a terrible influence!” he said with a laugh. Sure, he should be more careful with where and when he uses his powers. But it was always in harmless fun that he used them. And he hated it whenever he was told no. In this case, it was the government suppressing what made him different. If he wanted to use his powers, then that was exactly what he was going to do. He wasn’t too stupid about it though, never using them in a crowd of people (most of the time). Besides, he loved anything that gave him a sense of thrill. It was the reason he loved performing so much. When he thought about it, he actually was a bit of a risk-taker. There weren’t many things Ethan said no to, and that was both a blessing and a curse. Ethan waited, excited to see what Nell had planned. Just as he loved the ocean, he figured Nell must love the forest. There was something about being surrounded by his element that made him feel—invincible. The ocean made him feel like he could do anything and also made him feel at home. There was a certain comfort in it that he loved. Ethan nodded at Nell’s request, and snapped his feet together, hand saluting at his forehead. “ Aye aye, Captain!” he joked, exaggerating things like usual. He broke his stance and watched as the vine dropped, silently admiring her power. He always wondered what it would be like to be another element. If he had to choose another, he figured it would be earth. He always admired the beauty of nature (more than any guy he’d met) and felt it was related to water, in a way. But overall, he preferred his own element. It just suited him. As Nell climbed the tree, he immediately realized what she was planning. He chuckled, his grin spreading wider. He grabbed the vine Nell was talking about and swung it up with enough force to reach her height for her to grab. But Ethan stopped for a second when Nell told him to come up. “ Me? Climb up there?”” he asked, pointing to himself, feeling hesitant. But swinging from vines in the forest did sound fun. So, shrugging he approached the tree. “ Ah, let’s see how this goes.” He grabbed hold of the bark, shimmying his way up. He used branches and indents to support him and after only a few slips of the hands and feet he found himself in the tree with Nell. “ Well,” he said, wiping his brow. “ You sure know how to make me work.” He smiled, looking down from their height as excitement bubbled up inside of him. Nell shook her head. ”You shouldn’t be so proud of her peer pressure,” she joked back. Peer pressure was actually something that she was pretty easily susceptible to thanks to her people-pleasing personality. However, she was stubborn when it came to certain things and she would not sway when it involved the safety of others. Probably why she was a reliable person when you wanted to party and get back home in the same night. She would be anyone’s designated driver, since she was pretty straight-edge. Ironic, considering how much of a criminal she was. Nell wondered if Ethan realized that she was actually a fugitive because she ran from this trial and it had to be postponed. ”Because of you, I might just end up as a science experiment for the government,” she scolded him, wagging her finger. ”I wodner what they feed science experiments…” If she was getting food out of it, such a thing might not be too terrible. But she didn’t really look forward to being an experiment for anyone. She’d spend enough of her life in captivity, actually, which is why she didn’t want this trial at all. She didn’t even want to think about it.
The girl was always thankful for her element, as she was sure Ethan was. It made her the black sheep of the family—even more so than she already was—but that only made it better. She’d rather be Earth than a Sinclair Water or Fuentes Thunder. How would that work out, if Tilly had grown up? Nell chased that painful thought away. She didn’t like thinking about ‘what ifs’ when it came to her sister. But she figured that if they’d both grown up, Till would have been a Thunder and they would have been in separate alliances at the Academy. Not that it would make her love her twin any less. Then again, what would have happened if Tilly had grown up? Don’t think about it. She hated thinking about all the possibilities, because it made the eleven year old death of her sister even worse. Eleven years now. She was growing older, it was so strange to think about doing so on her own, without her mother.
Nell was also glad she now had forests to play in, and not just the concrete jungle of New York that she useed to sneak around. She waited for Ethan to throw up the vine, which she caught with both of her hands, keeping her feet steady on the branch. He responded to her then, and she called down, ”You don’t have to,” she said. She wasn’t about to force her friend into doing anything that he didn’t want to. It was all up to him, especially because she knew this could be quite possibility dangerous for them. ”But if you want to, this vine is pretty sturdy.” she yanked down on it for effect, her hands disappearing under the leafy foliage. Nell laughed when she saw that he was going to come up with her, and kept an eye out, just in case he made a misstep and fell down to the ground below. That wouldn’t be very good, now would it? There were a few close calls, but he made it up safely. ”It’s a work out,” she teased him, swinging around a little bit and preparing for dismount.
Getting a good stance, she leaned back, preparing to use her momentum. ”Take hold of my waist, dear Ethan, we have no time for you to sign a waiver!” She’d make sure he wouldn’t get hurt though, and she rocked back before lifting off and swinging under the tree the vine was attached to and launching across the forest. Nell made hooting animal sounds, probably disturbing the actual animals around, but the exhileration was just too much to hold in. After a few smaller swings they were hovering above the forest floor. ”Think you can jump or do you want to climb down?” she asked, studying the earth below. She believed she could make it, and she didn’t midn the heights, but she wouldn’t mind if Ethan would prefer to just clamber down the vine itself. Which she was going to try and make blend in with the rest of the forest after. There were a few vines around, but mostly clinging to the trees.

Ethan laughed, knowing Nell was joking about the peer pressure. Although, maybe he did actually do that sometimes. His stubbornness usually got in the way when things didn’t turn out like he wanted and he often goaded people into things. But he knew Nell was kidding. He was never one for peer pressure. He never cared what people thought of him and typically did whatever he liked. So, if he felt like using his powers then so be it. But Ethan had never really considered what would happen if he actually did get caught by the government. He supposed it was a possibility, but he, like most teenagers, viewed himself as invincible. Ethan jokingly shrugged at Nell’s comment. “Eh, I bet it isn’t too bad,
” he said, pretending to be uncaring. “ Maybe it’s good. Trapped for life but good food…doesn’t seem like a bad deal.” He smirked and chuckled. Ethan enjoyed the expanse of the forest. He didn’t find himself venturing outdoors that often voluntarily. Exercise and he never got along. It was ironic, really. His father was practically a body builder with the bulging muscles he had. And his brother certainly followed his father’s footsteps. Ethan’s household growing up was centered on sports, fitness, the whole package. And Ethan wanted none of it. Fortunately he was graced with a faster metabolism. Otherwise, he would be forced to hit the gym a few times. While his brother lifted weights and exercised five days a week, Ethan locked himself in his room practicing songs and perfecting his talent. Now older, he found the irony funny. He also appreciated the Canadian setting. Much different than Miami. Originally he thought he’d miss the heat, but he found himself growing accustomed to the cold. Maybe he would pick a beach over a forest, but he was grateful for the change in pace. Before he ascended the tree, he knew he didn’t have to climb up. But he also knew if he didn’t, he’d regret not joining in later. “ Now who’s laying on the peer pressure?” he said lightly, joking as he began to make his way up the thick trunk. When he made it to the top, there was no doubt he felt a bit relieved. There were a few parts on the way up where he started doubting the safety of the whole idea. “ You’re telling me,” he said grinning, out of breath. Ethan smirked when Nell grabbed hold of the vine and prepared for liftoff. He did as instructed, holding on to Nell’s waist. “ Well, let’s hope I don’t die then!” he joked, holding on a little tighter due to the small lump of fear in his stomach. But he trusted Nell so he wasn’t worried. Besides, it was too late for any second thoughts as they flew off the tree, the ground swept out from under his feet. He couldn’t help but let out a yelp when they first jumped off, his stomach dropping. The wind rushing by them and the speed of the swing had Ethan grinning and laughing at Nell’s animal calls. Ethan was still giggling as the swing came to a stop, the ground no longer a blur below them. “ I think I’ll take my chances and jump down,” he said, releasing his grip from the vine and falling the short distance. His feet touched ground, and he bended his knees to absorb the impact. He stood up straight, stretching his arms out. “ Whew! You sure know how to liven up a day,” he said. “ That was pretty awesome.” And it was. He loved little bursts of spontaneity like that, just going with things. And he liked a little thrill too. [/blockquote][/blockquote]
