There was no blush, but one corner of her mouth tugged a little into a barely-there smile. Perhaps it just felt good to be appreciated. Deirdra followed him silently, looking curiously at the array of random objects this shop contained. While she'd never been in a joke shop before, she was pretty sure it would be full of...well, jokes. Funny stuff. At first glance, this was not it. She was just moving away from the boy's side, farther into the store, when an unfamiliar voice made her flinch and then freeze.
She turned a cautious gaze on the man, a big and intimidating man. The fact that he seemed a naturally jolly person did nothing to ease Deirdra's mind, and she scooted a little closer to Ace, her shoulder behind his. Though she had too much self control to completely cower behind her companion, she didn't want to be approached by this stranger. This was why she didn't come into places like this. Dammit, dammit.... Then Ace said 'oh no', and she became even less comfortable. She squeezed the little beanie baby in her hands and kept her eyes on the ground, hoping beyond hope that Ace would not fly off the rocker.
He turned to her, and she peeked into his eyes as he told her a few things she must not do. ”Why?” Her voice was soft, and she immediately began to look around curiously for the pens he mentioned. Why not touch pens? Did he think she couldn't handle a pen? A need to know why welled up inside of her, but it seemed like she wasn't going to get an answer. Because the man who scared her approached even further. Without thinking, Deirdra stepped behind Ace even further and put one of her hands on his back. Well he was....strong, was all she could think of. Solid.
Something happened with a plastic flower—Deirdra really didn't understand, though she did notice with interest that Ace's hand became suddenly wet. Then Ace said something that sounded both threatening and protective at the same time, and she found herself looking at his face. Was he...? He was protecting her. Even if it was just from some squirty flower, he was very openly asserting that he was going to keep her safe. The thought both scared her and relaxed her at the same time. So she looked away, hoping he hadn't noticed the ponderous gaze she'd laid on him. And she pointedly did not follow him around the store.
It was not long before she found a pen. A whole lot of pens, actually. Just laying about. It wouldn't have mattered if the earth girl had sworn on her dead mothers name that she would not touch the things—curiosity compelled her to reach out and place her pointer finger cautiously on the closest one. Nothing happened. Frowning a bit, she straightened up and picked the thing up, running her hands all over it to see what the heck Ace had been talking about. Nothing happened. Starting to get bored, Deirdra clicked the top of the pen, meaning to open it and see if something was wrong with the tip.
”Ah!” She yelped a bit, dropping the thing and shaking her hand, which had been mildly shocked. Very out of character—well, she was surprised, which could bring just about anything out of her—the young woman started saying, ”What the hell! That was—what was—pens are for writing!” It was very obvious that she was not amused. |

"Because they-" He stopped short as Kyle came and greeted Ace. Oh he really hoped she would trust him and just not touch any of the pens. It was just bad to have those laying around. Ace remembered the first time he had tried out one of those pens. It was pretty bad. He clicked one and his hand went numb. The shock pens, he really didn't like them. They were really annoying little buggers and he hated using them in his pranks. They hurt, and were bad for trying to pull off harmful pranks. As Kyle came up to him, he felt Dee place a hand against his back. He was a little surprised she did that. She seemed to be a little scared of Kyle. He could see that, he did seem a little threatening because he was so big. But Kyle couldn't hurt a fly, unless that fly was on the end of one of his pranks then yea he was a good guy.
Well Ace didn't really know what came over him when he grabbed the flower. He felt that, well it would end up bad if Dee got surprised by a squirting flower. It was something that had just happened, he protected her. Even though it may have just been a small flower, he still protected her. He was keeping his promise, and he didn't even realize it until the thing had already happened. As he and Kyle started to walk around with each other, he noticed that dee didn't follow him. He didn't try and get her too either. He knew she was better off to wander around and explore the place by her own, figure some things out by herself. But he really really hoped that she didn't touch the pens.
Ace was looking through the aisles of the joke shop. He picked up a good quality whoopee cushion, not the stuff you can find at the dollar store, no those broke after a few uses. This one he had in his hand seemed like it could last after a few hundred uses. Then looking around for some other things he found the old joke glasses. the ones that were very nerdy kind of glasses. They had on the nose and mustache too. Ace wondered what Dee would look like in these goofy things, so he held these on to see if she might want to try them on.
Then he heard a yelp. And he knew that voice, seeing as those two were the only ones in the shop at the time, it wasn't hard at all to figure out who was yelping. He ran through the aisle and searched, finding Dee shaking her head, a silver pen on the floor. He gave a sigh and walked towards her a whoopee cushion and joke glasses in one hand and an empty right hand picking up the pen. Ace looked at the shocked girl with an 'I told you so look'. Then he placed his two items down on the shelf and showed her that she had to twist the bottom half of the pen to get the tip out. He re-twisted it and set it down with the others. He gently took her hand and started to massage it, gently of course, with his thumb, trying to get rid of any numbness she might feel. As usual with Ace. He forgot she didn't like to be touched. "I told you so." He said a bemused smirk across his face as he rubbed the numbness away.

Deirdra's eyes moved from the pen to him and then back at the pen, where they glared with more emotion than she usually displayed. It seemed like such a mean trick to do that to a writing utensil. Deirdra, being a writer herself, appreciated a good pen. So to her, this was an abomination. Her gaze kept this up, until Ace came closer and deposited his things on the shelf next to her. She looked at them briefly, wondering what horrible things those did, and then was completely taken off guard when he grabbed her hand.
Again, the panic. A bit of fear flashed through her eyes. But she smothered it in a very blank look, and somehow managed to stop her reflexes from tearing her hand out of his grip. Trust, right? She was trying to build trust here. Maybe. Possibly. Regardless, the earth girl became very, very tense, and she started grimacing when he started rubbing her numbed hand with his thumb. It hurt a little bit, and it was all prickly and unpleasant. For a split second, she wondered if she'd be able to move it, then she answered her own question by flexing her fingers. Which only make the pricklies worse. So she stopped moving it.
'Told you so.'
”No you didn't.” She sulked, her voice very quiet, ”You didn't tell me they'd shock me.” All at once she felt very ignorant, which only made her more annoyed. The girl didn't much like being so surprised. Eventually, she could take the touching no more. She tugged hard on her hand until she'd made it out of his strong grip, then wrapped the fingers of both hands around her little cat. Thank god for that cat. Her face went blank, emotionless, and she took a step away from Ace. ”I don't like this place.”
Deirdra turned her eyes on the items he had deposited on the shelf. After a second of looking at then, she lazily waved a hand toward them. ”What are those?” While she normally would have reached out and picked them up for herself, she was now wary of touching anything in this store. So she looked them over thoroughly, and then looked at Ace expectantly. |

She stiffened up as he took her hand, he noticed and tried to be even more gentle. He hated that prickly feeling, and usually rubbing it worked out the prickly feeling a lot faster. He got that feeling whenever he fell asleep in class and laid his head on his arms. Usually his arm would feel so bad if he moved them he had to stay still for a few long minutes. The feeling made him cringe, and he hated it when it happened to his feet. And it usually happened when he was walking around. That was just torture. If someone could make that feeling come up on command. Well, that was just torture in itself.
Ace looked at her, she was so quiet he didn't really hear what she had said. He got the gist of it though. "I didn't have enough time. Sorry for not warning you properly." He gave her an apologetic look, he really did mean he was sorry. He guessed it was his fault. He blamed himself for letting her get hurt, get hurt from the pen he had warned her about. It wasn't a good warning, he didn't give a reason for it. He was sorry and blaming himself for her pain. Then she pulled her hand away and he looked down at the floor a bit ashamed of himself. "We'll leave soon." He said shuffling his feet a bit.
He gave her a grin. "This is a whoopee cushion." He said with a grin. then he pushed on the rubber toy and as the air rushed out in a farting noise. He gave an immature chuckle at the stupid toy. Then he put that back on the shelf and put on the glasses with the nose and mustache and tried his best to make a funny face, to try and make her laugh. He hoped that would happen for him.

For some reason, even when her walls were back up, Deirdra felt very little discomfort when Ace touched her now. Well, this much. Ace's gentle fingers helped to massage the life back into her hand, and as he did so the young woman kept her eyes on the floor. She didn't want to see the chuckling owner of the infernal store, or the infuriatingly gentle gaze of the boy in from of her. It was too hard to keep her walls up when she saw that. It reminded her too much of her uncle. And she couldn't relax. Not here. Deirdra shouldn't relax around so many people.
Ace apologized, and Dee peeked up at him with her narrow green eyes. He looked sad. Like something she had said or done had ashamed him. This was not something she had seen from her uncle, though she had sensed a similar sort of feeling like this before. Slowly, as Deirdra removed her hand a stepped back, she took a deep breath and tilted her head uncomfortably. ”It's ok.” It was said so quietly, she wasn't certain Ace would hear it. But it wasn't a forgiveness. Mostly because while Deirdra wasn't happy she'd unknowingly shocked herself, she was never the type to stand up for herself. Little old her deserved every swing that came her way, she thought. It was downright selfish fear that made her run from her father.
”Ok.” She said with a little more volume. Her eyes followed his hands when he moved to show her the items. The first one looked like an inflexible balloon. Then he pressed it and it made a sound. Deirdra started a little bit. Then calmed herself. Despite herself, she felt a little amusement tugging at her. That one was ok. It wasn't even too loud, and it didn't hurt people. Her expression softened a bit even as Ace began to show her the other one—a silly pair of glasses. Instead of speaking, the boy put them on and let her look at him.
”That's....” Dee started, then trailed off immediately. It looked stupid. But she felt one side of her mouth tug upward, and her head tilted a little bit. She absently brought both her hands to hold her little cat tightly. ”That's very silly. Why would you want that?” Even though she seemed to be outwardly calm, Deirdra could feel the small tremors in her that told her this was not a good place. She wanted to leave this store soon. |

Ace felt a tug on his lips as he saw her lips move. He couldn't hear it, but he was positive she said something close to the lines of It's okay something like that. He was happy that she seemed to have forgiven him. He didn't really think he deserved it but still an apology was really nice to receive. Ace hoped she didn't hold him for being mean and not informing her about what the pens did. She still seemed a little closed off to him though, he hoped he could get her to open up to him a little bit. He didn't like to see it when she was closed off and distant from him. He worried that she might do something that could hurt her again.
Ace gave her a smile, "It's so I can make people laugh." He said with a grin. That was the end job of a prankster, to make people laugh, or get revenge, whichever situated the situation the best. Usually though, the people who got pranked, weren't laughing. The people who were laughing at the prank were the pranksters and the crowd watching. Though that was pretty bad, a good prank is one that the pranker and the target can laugh about once they've been pranked. "See that's why it's so silly."
"Ace I have to close up soon, My kid has a game today I promised I'd go. Kyle yelled from the counter. "Stay here I'll be back," Ace said to Dee as he headed to the back of the store towards the counter. Ace placed his items on the counter, there were only two but the real reason he came was for the things beside the counter. Bang Snaps, he called them. They were little fireworks that when thrown on the ground created a loud snap sound. He took a box and placed it on the counter. Kyle gave him a look " You know you have to be eighteen Ace." Ace looked at Kyle with a pleading look, "Please Kyle just this once, and I'm seventeen, it's close enough isn't it? Please!?" Ace begged, he'd done that before, begged for the fireworks. They were one of his favorite things, he knew if he begged enough Kyle would let him have them. Apparently it was enough begging for Kyle "Fine, but I'm charging you extra for these." He said holding up the box. Ace grinned and he paid Kyle for the toys.
Ace grinned at as he held the bag up and walked towards Dee. "C'mon where do you want to head too next?" He asked as they left the store. Ace must have walked ahead of her, and was distracted with putting a few of the Snaps in his pocket and out of the box, because he suddenly lost himself in the crowd. He turned around and found out he had lost her. Stupid stupid Ace, he should have stayed close. He tracked back and started to look for her in the crowd.
Apparently someone else had found Dee. He ran a hand through his dirty blonde hair, and wiped his hands on the back of his dark jeans. He slowly walked up to Dee. He grinned at her, chewing gum his breath must have smelled like peppermint. "Well hey there beautiful, you lost." By then some of his friends he had been hanging out with were behind him wondering what he was doing. "Why don't you come with me, I'll help you find your way." He was totally hitting on her. He placed his hand on her shoulder and gave her a cocky grin "I'm Jack, don't forget my babe."

She didn't touch anything, just looked about with muted curiosity as the boy she'd somehow ended up here with went to buy his toys. She did hear him saying please very emphatically, but her curiosity was not strong enough to override her obedience. The girl stayed there, waiting for Ace to come and get her. He must not have realized how much control he could exert, she mused. Perhaps he was only being so nice because he had not yet realized that she would not do anything for herself. Perhaps when he knew her better, she would have someone to replace her father.
These morbid thoughts were driven from her mind as Ace came back and led her out of the store. He did not grab her hand, though, so the first time her eyes was caught by something interesting in a store window, and she lingered, she lost him in the crowds. At first, the girl didn't realize she was alone. Then someone accidentally bumped into her and she squeaked a little. A chill ran up her spine as she pressed herself against the nearest wall. First, she kept her head down. Then, when no one touched her, she looked up with mingled panic and confusion at the masses of people at the mall. It was just too many people. Even though she had the map perfectly pictured in her head, Deirdra felt lost.
At first, Deirdra didn't realize she had commanded attention. Not really understanding that she could be gorgeous wearing a sack with a belt around it, she didn't expect to gain the attention of men. And she didn't understand why they thought she was so captivating. While she did expect people to hurt her once they'd seen her, she'd been pretty good so far about not being noticed. So she didn't look at the boy until he'd already sidled up very close to her. Then she turned. And her stomach flipped. He was a big man. Little tremors ran through her. Ducking her head, she took a tiny step away from him.
”No.” She said to the first one, trying very hard to keep her face from screwing up with the emotion she felt. It became apparent also that there were a few other boys in on this. Or at least interested in this. Which was very, very bad. Shuddering even harder, she caught her breath when he touched her. Now this boy, he was an unknown person. She didn't know what he would do if she tried to push him away. So she didn't move. She just shivered and made a small noise. ”Can't get lost here.”
Forget? Dee never forgot anything. Which in her life was a sad, sad thing. Turning her head just a little away from Jack, Deirdra leaned back and said, ”Please leave me alone.” |

Jack gave her a quizzical look, "C'mon babe don't worry about it I'll give you a hand," he said looking at her. Dang she was hot, he wondered how soft her lips were. He gave her his charming smile and ran a hand through his fluffy blonde hair. He moved closer too her so that he nearly pinned her against the wall, his left hand kept his weight up by leaning it on the wall beside her shoulder. "Why don't you come back some place with me." He said with a grin. His friends were laughing a little distance away no longer interested in their friends flirting. However they were close enough that if there were trouble.
When she looked away his eyes narrowed a bit. So he took her chin between the side of his pointer finger and the pad of his thumb and turned her head towards his. "C'mon baby, don't be like that." His face got closer to hers and his lips were going for hers. Then he pulled away from her and punched in the face. "She said to go away." Ace said his eyes full of anger and seriousness. Ace walked towards Dee and looked her in the eyes "Dee, I'm so sorry I lost you, are you okay?" Ace wasn't able to hear the answer to the question. He was turned around and Jack was glaring at him, his cheek red and hurt from the lofty punch. "You little bastard." Then Jack swung at him, Ace saw it coming though he ducked then his fist came up in boxing fashion and then it connected with Jack's chin. Jack was down for the count, if this was back when he was in the ring, well this would have been a quick match.
Ace saw Jack's friends start coming at him, "Crap." He took Dee's hand, "Dee let's go!" He cried out. As he started running he dropped some of his Bang Snaps so that it would surprise them when they tried to chase after them, causing loud unsuspecting snaps. He yelled at people to move and they did not expecting to be yelled at that day. It was a clear path to the doors. Would they make it? Ace believed he would, he hoped they did, he might get banished from the mall, this would have been his third strike, and then he was out for a year. A year without the mall would be horrible to Ace. He loved to loiter around at the mall he had nothing else to do on some weekends, and the mall was a great place for jobs too. He really hoped the stupid Mall Cops wouldn't somehow catch up to them, plus if he did get caught and they found out about the Bang Snaps, well Kyle would get into trouble as well as he was the only one who sold them.
