”This ain’t Coyote Ugly.” Nell looked over at the bartender with a half-smile as she caught the bottle and poured it into the shot glass. ”I was thinking more in the vein of Cocktails.” If she was good at anything, it was at adapting and learning skills through observation and experience. Which is why she was now throwing bottles around, with her fellow bartender hoping she didn’t break anything. She passed the shot off to a patron who could probably care less for her tricks but it at least made her feel better about her job. She had taken the earlier shift that weekend and was working her way to pay off her debt to Jacob. And to pay off her bills. And to buy food.
”You break, you buy,” was his final say and she merely grinned at him. He was right, the piece of crap ‘club’ was not Coyote Ugly, and if it were she’d be able to afford a meal that didn’t come in a Styrofoam cup. But there was no use in complaining, even in her own head. She was safe, she was healthy, she was thriving. And to the upside, it was the end of her shift. Nell threw her apron to her replacement, a guy who needed some overtime. It was still pretty early in the afternoon, around five, and it was strange exiting the joint to enter into the sun. The streets were safer, though, so she was glad that she could walk alone without any fear. The big bossman said he might call her later if things get too busy, but she was going to spend the rest of the day enjoying herself.
With this thought, she took out her phone and pulled up Phil’s number. 'If you're not doing anything tonight, meet me at Tim Hortons’. She sent the text and put the phone back into her pocket as she walked over to the place, since she had to walk everywhere now. Nell wondered if she was too busy to come out tonight, her being the ever-important Wind leader. But the Earth student worried about Phil, though she didn't say it out loud. She wasn’t too keen on the situation, but the engagement wasn’t the school’s best-kept secret, really. Hopefully she could take her friend’s mind off the whole thing for some time. Nell did know a thing or two about running away.
Pushing open the door, she was greeted with heat and would have kissed the ground if she weren’t so cold. She blew on her hands before she went up to order a hot chocolate and a box of donuts. She was still the best at budgeting, clearly. Pretty sure she smelled like booze, she fanned the space around her in a futile attempt to dispel the stench of her work. Sitting down, she tried not to eat all of them if Phil showed up and came up with plans for what they could do for the weekend.
(Sorry for lack of purdy template. T.T maybe soon. xD)

they were going to blackjack bar, a place where philomena would have never imagined herself dining at. she continued to roll her eyes at the comments kieran made concerning himself, his family, and their marriage. by the time they had arrived at the bar birdie was gripping at her sides to control herself from fulfilling all the impulsive urges that were stirring in her brain. he was discouraged when they were seated a secluded table and phillie told him that she didn't have much of an appetite. kieran grumbled and ordered a heaping pile of ribs for himself. their conversation was scarce and phillie was thankful when she felt the weak vibration through her clutch. it was nell, inviting her to tim horton's if she had the time and the chance to make her way over. phillie was going to jump at the chance, she would have to kiss nell's feet. she had just served as her savior.
kieran was temperamental but phillie hadn't expected him to throw a tantrum when phillie said she was going to need to make an early departure. he had actually thrown the plate of ribs to the floor, sending barbeque sauce flying and spattering all over philomena. she shot to her feet and kieran clambered after her in an attempt to keep her from leaving. she directed a furious gust of wind his way and the unexpected breeze knocked him to his feet and into the plate, where kieran received a face full of barbeque sauce himself. she stormed out of the bar and into the street, the chill of the cold immune to her as she stomped down towards tim horton's in the fading light of the sun. phillie didn't even have her jacket to lay over her shoulders, kieran had driven her out before she had the chance to collect her things. the only thing she had left with was the clutch that was desperately holding onto in her grasp.
with a groan she flung the door to the coffee shop open and stamped in, looking around wildly for nell. she spotted her at a table with a box of donuts and a cup of something by her. philomena was hardly aware of the curious glance her entrance gained and the stares that stuck to her so that people could survey her expensive attire. her heels clicked loudly and she dropped down into the chair across of nell in a fury. she said nothing as she grabbed at a napkin and wiped the smears of sauce from her arms and legs and then balled up the napkin and launched it onto the table. nell was probably formulating questions in her head right now. phillie grabbed at a donut and shoved it in her mouth and chewed furiously. "i just came from the blackjack bar," she said after her donut was on the course of digestion. it was a statement that would rise more questions in nell's mind but also something to keep birdie from having to say anything else.

Moving her eyes around the other people seated in the shop, Nell wondered how many people had lives like hers. Well, she doubted any of them were fugitives, but you could never know. She sighed softly, swinging a donut around in the box with her finger. Bad thoughts stay in America. Or at least that’s what she told herself on the way north. She’d thought since she was so good at running away, she could apply that to her thoughts as well and forget about what happened just so recently. But she wasn’t as good a thought-ignorer as she thought she was, probably due to the fact she over-analyzed things anyway. Oh well. Nell still found ways to think on the bright side, since that was pretty much what kept her going for so any years.
Nell was on her fourth donut when she heard the door open and the clicking of heels against the floor. Before she could swallow the pastry down and look to assess the newcomer that had caused a lull in the other patrons’ conversations, Phil sat down across from her and Nell turned her eyes up, taking time to blink in confusion. She was wearing a rather flashy dress that was of course out of place at the coffee shop, but that wasn’t even the oddest thing. The Wind leader said nothing as she grabbed a napkin and started blotting off what looked like…barbeque sauce? ”Heya, Birdie.” Nell decided to stay silent from there as she chased down her donut with hot chocolate, waiting for Phil to say something that would explain why she just stormed in dressed so nicely and covered in sauce.
Nell wanted say never to eat when angry since it could cause indigestion, but as Phil chewed away on a donut she curtly explained that she’d just came from the Blackjack Bar. And that was the end of that. ”Explains the dress…” She commented, placing the hot chocolate down and grabbing another donut. ”Which is very pretty.” Since Phil didn’t seem to be in the best of moods (understatement), it’d be best to distract her rather than having her talk about whatever happened at the bar. At least the Earth student had enough tact for that. Nell herself was nowhere near as well-dressed, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and jeans. ”I just got off work at the club, so sorry if I smell—“ She wrinkled her nose as she lifted her shirt a bit. ”—unpleasant.” Or like stale booze. She wasn’t afraid to tell her friends about working at a bar underage—she wasn’t concerned about Phil turning her in. She was paranoid with certain things, but she found no point in lying to her friends about where she is for six hours a day.
”Do you want a coffee or anything?” Nell asked. ”And maybe water to get some of that barbeque sauce out.” It was a really nice dress, ashamed that she got it messed up like that. She didn’t think Phil to be messy enough to do that to herself, so it had to be something else. Though the Earth girl really had no clue as to what went on, she tried to figure it out herself without asking aloud. She sighed before finally saying, ”So bad day, I take it?” Nell was in a pretty good mood, seeing as how nothing went too wrong for her today. So she wore her usual half-smile thinking of how she at least just got paid and that the plants in her windowsill were actually faring well enough for winter time. She hoped that had something to do with her magic getting better, since the weather wasn’t exactly changing for the better.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,10,true][atrb=style, background-color: #423c42;,true][cs=2] & YOU'RE NOT EVEN HUMAN ` YOU'RE JUST A LOVELY IDEA OF ONE WHO I ACCIDENTALLY LOVED AND GAVE EVERYTHING TO BECOME THE GIRL ON THE PIANO BENCH SINGING ALL OF HER TEARS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - away | [atrb=width,240]nell was a great friend, phillie would jump to defend her in a moment if someone tried to mash her into anything negative. she waited patiently for birdie to finish with cleaning herself and didn't ogle about the spectacle that she had caused by stomping into the story. occasionally she would press the issue of her marriage onto her, only at times when kieran had done something unspeakable or worked birdie up into a rage. phillie never complained or whined about kieran's treatment of her and she never moaned about the situation she had been placed in. nell though always had firm stance on the fact that such a guy opposite to phillie had been chosen as her fiance. she was tart about the whole marriage idea but had quieted her opinions after phil had asked her to politely mind her own business. she didn't feel comfortable when people snooped around her personal matters.
she was gaining more looks from the people who were lingering around the coffee shop. phil didn't associate herself with the citizens of maple hollow but it wasn't unlikely if they knew her face. her father was one of the top leading businessmen in the world. last year he had worked his way up onto the forbes list, under the dayton's of course. family drama always seemed to be stirring with them, between the marriage of philomena or the outcries of helios or his disowned daughter begging for money. "hello nell," phillie said with a tight smile, inclining her head to nod to the girl sitting across the table from her. she was horribly proper and it showed in her posture and the way she addressed people. her lifestyle had caused her to be raised a certain way and it shined through with everything that she did.
nell reached out to snatch another donut and phillie did the same, grabbing one and taking a tiny bite out of it. this time she went about devouring the donut in a more ladylike fashion. her manners would never fail her. "sorry if the dress seems a little over the top. it reminds me of a walking disco ball, thank you though." |
philomena glanced down at her own attire and smiled at the way the material of the dress shimmered. it was an attention grabber and showed off wealth. her eyes fixed back onto nell and the smile turned opposite to a frown as she picked at her shirt with an unpleasant face. "you're working a job to earn money. if you carry the smell then it is just a downside of your hard working. it's no need to apologize." with her firm words said she reached for another donut and popped into her a mouth with as much class as could be allowed. nell was offering to buy her a drink and philomena adamantly shook her head at the girl and then wiped her hands off on a napkin. she wouldn't allow nell to buy anything for her, she could order it ably on her own and then use her own money to pay it off. it was a pet peeve of hers, she didn't like other people having to cover her. "don't worry, i'll get a drink in a little. the dress will live though. there is no promises i'll ever wear it again." it was a promise that she would never slip her body into the slinky number again. once something formal was worn it was slipped back into her closet to strictly be admired. she let her stiff posture relax and she reclined back in her chair, spreading out feet that were aching in her precarious heels. phil bit back a groan when nell said t that her day had been. she would be vague about her encounter but say enough to satisfy nell's curiosity. "one lesson learned today: never allow kieran to take you out to dinner." [/div] [atrb=width,140] words ,650 words , tagged ,stark wiff nell , notes ,outfit ,

[cs=2]

[/div] tearing love apart, Once again, Nell’s eyes scanned the area, the people who had stopped their conversations to send Phillie curious glances. I’m sure they’ve seen worse, she thought, wishing they’d return to their own business. Of course, there had been a time when Nell tried to pry into the girl’s business, but with a firm reprimand she’d stopped it. Nell knew about keeping secrets and the such, she was keeping quite a few that could land her in prison—she just had to try and put herself into her friend’s shoes. Which was near impossible, since it was still hard to believe that her father would set up a marriage without even asking her daughter’s permission. Even thinking about it put a bitter taste in Nell’s mouth, especially since she’d met Kieran before, being in the same grade.
Turning her eyes back to her friend, she noticed the straight-back posture and terse smile. Very bad day. She even at the donut with poise while Nell was busy wiping off powder residue from her mouth with the back of her hand. Nell wasn’t raised with manners and such—she wasn’t even raised, save for when her father was still around. Her manners and skills were mostly self-taught, but she could never be as prim and graceful as Phil for that was bred into her. There was a huge social gap between them, but Nell didn’t care for how much someone’s father made in the year or their statuses in the world—she cared for that someone’s personality. But something she never told anyone about was her own family, the people who were aiming to lock her up—they had the money and the power. But she didn’t grow up with their influence, with their money and their inner circle of class. She was the black sheep.
Nell laughed a bit at the disco ball comparison and said, ”A very elegant walking disco ball.” Then, she gave reassurance in saying, ”You wear anything well, so I don’t see it as over the top.” Those were her very sincere compliments—she lied about a lot when it came to herself, but not with others and not when trying to make others feel at least a little better. The people staring were all mostly jealous seeing as Maple Hollow wasn’t the crème de la crème. But it was a place where mostly everyone went to, and it was helluva lot better than where Nell lived downtown. She chuckled at Phillie’s matter-of-fact reply. ”You’re completely right,” she admitted. Nell didn’t hate her job—‘look on the bright side’ mentality and all—but it was certainly not what she wanted to do with her life. She wondered if the Wind leader wanted to do something other than use her father’s wealth to get by—she wasn’t the kind of stuck-up socialite that would sit back and mooch off her family’s wealth. ”I’m glad I’m not turning you off with the stench,” she joked.
Phil fervently turned down her offer of coffee, of course being stubborn. Understandable. Nell had to be careful with her money, but when it came to getting something for her friends… Maybe she should work on that. ”Hmm…Isn’t that a rule? Never wear a nice dress twice?” she mused, tapping her finger against her chin. She tried to remember where she’d heard that from, and it came to her in a rather sour thought. Aunt Jane, when mocking her for shits and giggles. Or revenge. She came to the hospital in a little black dress, and thought that Nell’s hospital gown was rather amusing. The girl didn’t enjoy banter with her aunt, but had nonetheless carried on a mean-spirited conversation with the woman for over an hour. ”That gown looks rather good on you Nell, but you should never wear a dress twice. So I’ll be putting you in stripes for your next outfit.” Lovely woman, she was. ”I still think it’s too cute to shut away in your closet forever.” Which is true. It might have been over the top here, but for an outing that Phil usually went to it was perfect.
Nell wrinkled her nose in much the same way she had when smelling her shirt, the distaste clear on her usually smiling face. Sadly enough, that explained everything, so she didn’t need to push Phillie for any more information on that front. Nell was a nice girl and only reserved her intense dislike for her family—but Kieran was not-so-nice a person and if she were to put it bluntly, he was a brat. ”I see he’s as charming as usual,” she simply said, finishing off the donut. ”Well, you’re not out with him anymore. You’re out with me, and I’m going to ensure the rest of your night is as enjoyable as possible.” She gave a wink as she finished saying this, hoping the prospect of anything other than Kieran would be enough to cheer her up. 827, template yo. <3

nell was an opposite counterpart to phillie, they were practically like the colors black and white. philomena enjoyed the diversity to their relationship that nell brought onto the table. their lives couldn't be compared to each other, phillie came from a life that could only be described as luxurious and a way of living that thousand of girls could only dream about. nell, well phillie didn't know how to respond to nell. the walk of life that she came from was nothing that philomena would ever be able to relate to. she couldn't tell how nell had grown up but she got a feeling that it had been rough. phillie couldn't change the way that nell had been raised, she didn't even know a single thing about her childhood. it was the secrecy that philomena viewed as holy and would never think to disrupt. their friendship had black bubbles of confidentiality that phillie would never dare to disturb. it was an aspect that phillie was gracious for.
she shifted in her seat, her back growing stiff against the hard back of the wooden seat. with the small movement of her body the shimmering of the dress intensified and philomena was captivated by the way the fabric looked dazzling. nell was feeling complimentary, showering her with compliments about her dress and the style that she chose. phillie's response was a laugh that would have been described as bashful if she ever felt embarrassed by the way that people gave her appraisals. "i wasn't aware that disco balls carried the capacity to be elegant. it's news to me." |
phillie was talking lightly, her mood obviously lifted by the company that nell was gifting her with. "oh hush, nell. all of these compliments are unneeded." the positivity was nice but nell didn't need to continue with the compliments. she smiled encouragingly at nell. "believe me, i enjoy your company too much to be turned off by the smell of alcohol."she peered over at nell and snorted at the thoughtful look that was displayed on her face. she spoke wisely, like the rule was one that had to be followed or serious consequences would be enforced. phillie tapped her heel a few times, thinking back on the number of dresses that she had nestled in her closest. she couldn't recall the exact number of dresses and they all fell into various styles and categories. too many dresses to count, that was the conclusion that phillie settled with. dresses were her weak spot, she saw one in a window at a store and would go and splurge on it because it had caught her eye. "i think it is a stereotypical rule that has been established by the lower class regarding the upper class," phil vaguely responding, not offering much more input then that. typically though she didn't don a dress more then once, shh. "you think so? consider it yours." phil was serious on the offer of gifting the dress to nell. the collective opinion on kieran was that he was a royal douche bag who didn't know how to act properly. the way that her face scrunched at the mention of kieran made philomena laugh heartily. it was a reaction that she was adjusted to but coming from nell she couldn't stop herself from cracking up. "he is quite the prince. he was raised that way, you know," phillie inserted her opinion, using dry humor to get her point across. she was never happy with kieran, he only rained on her parade and left her wishing to remove herself from his company. that had been exactly what she had done tonight. only ten minutes with nell and her whole mood had flopped around with a few words and laughs from her friend. "you're the only person that i would want to spend the rest of this evening with," phillie confirmed, gracing nell with a wide smile as a reaction from her wink. [/div] tearing love apart, Nell didn’t know whether or not she envied Phil the good life. She never asked for much, so even a decent paycheck would be enough for her. Living in squalor was something she’d grown used to, but it didn’t mean she enjoyed it. But to have the kind of money Birdie had? Well, that seemed a bit intimidating. But the girl must have been used to it, and looking at Nell it must have seemed completely foreign to be living paycheck by paycheck. Nell knew that even at her age she should have still been living with her parents, with their shelter and their money, safe from the problems of the real world until she was ready to be nudged out of the nest. But that’s not how her life was, it’d never been that way. Sure, she had a roof over her head for her entire life, but she also had her mother who hated the girl like nothing else.
Phil gave a modest laugh, and Nell smiled at her. She was glad to see that the girl’s mood was slowly turning. ”You’d be surprised. I’ve seen some very nice-looking disco balls in my day.” She laughed saying this, enjoying joking around with the girl. She’d liked to forget about the pressures of her life for at least a little bit of time. Her talents lay in ignoring things, but even she wasn’t adept at ignoring things right in front of her. Like all the work she had to do with her studying, and her job, and her apartment and all that. But sitting her with Birdie she could pretend all of that didn’t even exist. She could tell that Phillie liked the compliments even as she told Nell to cool it. ”Aww, but I’m having fun with complimenting you!” Nell teased good-naturedly. She shook her cup a bit to see how much cocoa she had left, and it wasn’t much. ”Fine, fine, no more compliments from me.” At least Phil wasn’t disgusted by the smell of her work, and that was enough for her. She decided for the future to carry around body spray or something in her purse for when she got off work.
On the subject of never wearing a dress twice, Nell heard her friend snort as she grew a bit lost in thought. And then came her rather matter-of-fact reply. ”A stereotype? I’m glad I can disregard it, then.” She smirked, thinking of telling her aunt about that, by way of calling her ‘low-class’. Nell hoped that she’d never have to see the woman ever again, but she knew better. Even as she tried to deny it, she knew she could never escape. For now she pretended to cope with her problems. She wondered how Aunt Jane would react to that one? Hey, did you know only low class people think that way about the upper class? Probably with a narrow-eyed, angry retort would come. Aunt Jane considered herself to be very high class, making money as a musician but also dealing in organized crime. And she wore elegant dresses while being a vindictive witch. Nell blinked when Phil offered to give her the dress. ”Where am I going to wear a dress like that?” she asked with knitted-eyebrows, disappointed in realizing this. But still… ”It’d be nice to actually have a dress.” She smiled slightly as she said this. It’s not like she ever had nice clothes before. Another one of their black and white, night and day differences. ”Thank you.”
Phil was sardonic in her opinion of her fiancé. Nell didn’t even like to think of it like that. She knew the girl didn’t love the Fire brat, didn’t even like him for that matter. And Nell was one of those people that believed two people should be in love before they decide to spend the rest of their lives together. But there was no deciding between the two of them; the marriage was their families’ prerogative. ”His parents must be proud.” She shook her head. Raised to be a prick? Nell didn’t know how she felt about wealthy parents like that. Phil’s didn’t seem too good to her at the moment, but of course she said nothing of it—that would have been more-than-rude and Nell liked to believe she had manners. She didn’t know about Kieran’s parents, though, and couldn’t pass judgment on them. Nell simply decided that wealth didn’t matter when it came to parenting—because parents were supposed to care for their children, and that was that.
Nell’s eyes sparkled at Phil’s reply. ”Good! Now, is there anywhere you’d like to go tonight? Of course if you’d like to have a wild night out. Or we could just stay in and do nothing. I’m up for anything.” Anything that didn’t involve work and anything like that. Nell just wanted to forget about her problems and enjoy Phillie’s company.

she was relaxing in her chair, feeling her posture drooping and her back meeting with the hard wooden spindles of the chair. she caught nell's smile and her insides loosened from the tensity that she had been stiffened with from only a few moments ago. nell continued with the joking of the disco ball and phillie returned the smile that nell had aimed at her only a brief moment ago. "you go around surveying disco balls? i must say, you have some fascinating hobbies that i was unaware of," |
phillie joked softly, reveling in the playful banter that they were participating in. joking with nell made her feel laid back and more at ease from the high strung feeling she had been suffering from. "yes, you can relax with the compliments and i'll take over the compliment ship." phillie would now take the job of complimenting nell, it would be humbling for phillie and potentially uplifting for nell. dresses, dresses, dresses. it was subject that would never grow tiring for philomena. she enjoyed shopping for the dresses, trying on countless dresses, and then purchasing an arm full of them and displaying them in her wardrobe. phillie reached out for the box and picked at one of the donuts and popped it into her mouth expertly and took delight in the flavor of the powdered pastry, disregarding that she would be adding on extra calories. "yes ma'am. stereotypes are to be disregarded, especially the ones made about the upper class." she reached out for another donut and then she had to hold back laughter when she saw nell blink and look at her in extreme confusion. "you'll look dazzling in this dress, nell. you'll even have a place to wear the dress because i'm going to take you as a guest to one of my parents parties." phil gave a secure nod to alert nell that there was no way she would try and argue with the decision she had just made. kieran was a topic that she didn't want to give too much focus on. it would be tiring to continue to hear nell insult him and have her try and contain the burning hatred that she felt for him. phil let out a sigh and then loosely crossed her arms over her chest. "hayne thinks the world of his son," phillie said with finality, giving the final word about the subject of her fiance. she stood and then grabbed at her dress and pulled it down to properly adjust it so that it didn't ride to high. she balanced her weight on her two feet and then glanced over at nell. "i don't know what i want to do but i don't want to stay here. let's just somewhere nell," phillie said to her and reached out and closed the lid on the empty box of donuts. she was restless and wanted something to do. they could wander the town, there wasn't much in maple hollow but phillie had a little money on her and nell knew the town a little more better than she did. phillie was antsy and sitting in a coffee shop wouldn't leave her content. [/div] tearing love apart, Nell was more than glad to see Phil relax, and even return her smile. ”My hobbies are numerous and disco ball observation is only one of them,” she said matter-of-factly. It felt good to be joking around with Phillie like this, especially after the dinner that must have been terrible. She’d been working all day, but she took the shift during some of their least-busiest hours—she reminded herself to do that more often. ”Aye, aye, captain,” Nell said with a goofy smile, saluting with two of her fingers. Good thing she was usually in a good mood and was always there to joke around with—she couldn’t remember the last time she had an ‘off’ day. But that was because she made sure things didn’t get to her. Then again, she didn’t have a Kieran in her life to annoy her. She just had a minimum wage way of life, and all she had to do was remind herself that it was better than where she came from and that she was still free.
If Nell could, she would wear more dresses. As it were, wintertime wasn’t really the best time to go bearing legs and she didn’t have anywhere to go to do so. She actually couldn’t remember the last time she wore a dress—probably when she was younger and wore matching clothes with her sister because that’s what twins did. They wore matching dresses and barrettes and smiles, even though there was nowhere for them to go. ”I have no stereotypes in my head. Most upper-class folk I’ve met have made it a point to prove stereotypes wrong, actually. Including you.” Then again, she hadn’t had any stereotypes in her head beforehand. She guessed her relatives weren’t people you wouldn’t call ‘stereotypical’ upper-class. The Sinclairs were old money, while the Fuentes were new money and both of them were determined to prove they didn’t just sit around sipping wine and playing golf. The Sinclairs had their underground deals, and the Fuentes family made it a point to be important figures in New York society, the politicians and the shakers and the movers. Both complete opposites of each other. And now she had Phil, who even gave her the time of day despite their class differences.
Nell was still registering surprise when Phillie went for another donut. And even more surprise came when she invited her to one of her parents’ parties, with a compliment to boot. ”You’re kidding, right?” She was unused to that kind of invitation, which really wasn’t an invitation judging by Phil’s tone of voice. Nell studied the girl to see if she was serious, and saw her nod with finality. One couldn’t blame her for being skeptical—not like she had much experience in this realm. She tried not to look too excited, but her smile was pretty damn bright. ”I would love to accompany you to one of your parents’ shindigs.” Or any party, for that matter. The kind of ‘parties’ she attended was with her friends to another friend’s house that usually included drinking and destroying furniture and causing general mayhem. Nell merely acted as a ‘designated sober’ (even though when offered she would have a drink) and could have fun without slinging back ten jaegers. She liked to have fun, it was in her nature. ”What are they usually like?” She wondered, considering there was a difference between the kinds of parties she attended and the ones Birdie did.
Phillie wanted to drop the subject, it was clear by the way she sighed and crossed her arms before stating here own opinion on that. Of course his father was proud. Nell resisted the snort, and also withheld all she wanted to say—everything she always wanted to say to Phil—which went something like ‘You don’t have to do this! Tell your father that you don’t want to marry Kieran! If he loves you, he’ll understand!’ But of course she couldn’t open her mouth and carry on this conversation about the stupid kid. Since there was nothing Nell could do about it, she dropped the topic. She surveyed Phil as the other girl stood and adjusted her dress. ”Perfect,” Nell said to her friend’s insistence they go out. She didn’t want to hang out in a coffee shop all night, anyway, and was more than glad to get out. Tonight would be about forgetting.
Nell picked up the last donut box with her finger and threw the empty box away. She exited into the chilly streets, and as the cold hit her she looked over at Phil and said, ”Jeez, you don’t have a coat, do you?” Neither did she, but she was also wearing jeans and a long-sleeved shirt to keep her warm. Phil…was not. Checking her phone for the time, Nell said, ”The mall’s still open, you want to go shopping?” Nothing like walking around the mall for something to do. True, there was not a lot in Maple Hollow, save for going to a club (which she just got back from, so that was a no-no) and eating out. And both of them had already eaten their fill of donuts.

"you must have a wide variety of interests then. one time you must take me along on one of your disco ball observations. it sounds absolutely intriguing," |
philomena remarked with a wry smile. she glanced over at nell and took in the peppy aura that she felt that was steaming off of nell. she never seemed to allow anything to get her down, she surely went through some seriously tough times but phillie never saw let anything get her down. "now you're a pirate? did you sail a ship over the summer?" phillie had actually went on a month long cruise though the islands, it had been a gift from kieran's parents. kieran had been present too, that little detail had taken away from the relaxation aspect of the trip. she ran her hands down her arm, feeling the goose bumps that had been on her skin rising again. someone had opened the door and a cold gust of wind had blown directly towards their corner table. philomena could have easily stifled the wind but out in public she became more wary over her control of the wind. she looked over at nell and a look of tempered wonder was displayed on her face. she was talking about how the people of rich status had proved themselves against the apparent stereotypes that had been set against their class. kieran didn't attest to aiding that small number but phillie knew that she fell out of the normalcy of the upper class. she sent nell a warm smile. "well, i don't have aims to go around and flaunt the money of my name. i'm more laid back with that sort of thing. i also don't laze around living off of my family name," she explained mildly, her tone nothing more than explanatory. philomena didn't expect to slide by in life on nothing more than the portion of the wealth she would inherit because her surname was bird. she would accomplish things like any other woman with ambition planned to do. it seemed that nell was nothing but astonished when philomena had told her more than invited that she would be her guest at one of her parents parties. the parties were held daily, they were reasons for her mother to fill her time with pointless planning and splurging of money that would be spent on outrageous items. the people that were invited were always stuffy and stiff and the food was too foreign for birdie's taste. she nodded over at nell again. "they are horribly dull in complete honesty. the people are all of high status and they do nothing more but swirl the wine in their glasses and talk about things like stocks. the food is from all over the world and the decor my mother chooses is outstanding," phillie briefly explained. "it will be nice to have someone as company. helios likes to think he is manly and partakes in the gentlemens' conversation," phillie said, feeling like she had released more information the had actually been necessary. nell would probably seem out of place, sitting around in one of phillie's dresses and having her feet become sore because of her tall heels. phillie though would have someone by her side and she could explain to nell the inside workings of a high end party. it would be an experience. she was moving towards the towards and stray eyes were once again on her as her heels gently clicked against the tiled floor. phil's eyes lay on the door and didn't even follow nell to the trashcan when she disposed of the empty box of donuts. she heard the perfect come from nell and she gave nothing more than a nod to show that she had heard her speak. she held the door open and ushered nell out then easily caught up with her and fell into step beside her. it was a chilly night, she exhaled and watched the frost of her breath dispel. nell made a comment about her lack of a jacket and she merely shrugged her shoulders. "it's not drastically chilly out here. i will be able to bear against the cold," she assured, looking over at her with sure eyes. really, phillie was warming the air around them and changing the circulation to battle against the natural cold of the winter. "the mall is fine, i have a little money so maybe i can get some shopping done." she would even buy something for nell if she asked, her weekly supply of money was weighing down the tiny clutch that was in her grasp. it was time for her to find a crafty way to spend it, shopping seemed like no better way then to spend it. [/div] tearing love apart, 8d2936”Ah, a shame there isn’t any disco clubs around. Not many outlets for my strange hobbies.” She clucked her tongue, actually managing to keep a straight face. She was even impressed with herself. And now a pirate she was accused of being? She outright smiled now, unable to resist. ”Maybe, maybe not.” Actually, last summer she was still living with her mother in The Bronx. Going on a ship was the last thing on her mind. Or maybe that could have been something she imagined when she tried to think of being any place that wasn’t there. ”I’ll have to answer in the negative. If I were a pirate, I’d have some booty. Then I’d be treating us to something other than donuts and coffee…and I’d also have scurvy, but that’s beside the point.” Life of a pirate was not good for someone like her who prided herself in being a hygienist. Even when scarfing down donuts like there’s no tomorrow. She’d taken to eating junk food a lot lately, actually, it was one of her unfortunate vices.
Nell blinked as the wind hit her face, shivering a bit. She understood when Phil didn’t do anything about it—it was a door opening, nothing worth using your powers for really. Besides, it did to unstick Nell’s mind as it stayed on her family, the rich mothersomethings that her mind had the uncanny habit of wandering over to. Thank you, Phillie, for existing and being an awesome person. She proved to be a great distraction from her easily sidetracked mind. Really, without friends like this girl Nell wouldn’t know where she’d be. In a much worse position than she was now, probably. ”A woman with ambition!” Nell said with a wide grin, cradling her chin in her hand. ”So what do you plan to do instead of feeding off the family name?” In all honesty, Phil could probably do anything she set her mind to. Anyone could, actually, but that girl has serious potential. She possessed presence and sound mind and was the type of person you knew instantly upon meeting was influential, even if unaware of her background.
By now, Nell’s shocked expression had settled into something more of a glowing eagerness. She was completely ignorant of the lifestyle of the rich and famous, so she didn’t know whether to assume it stuffy and rigid or when the wealthy let loose and swung from their chandeliers. But Phil informed her that it was indeed the former. ”A party is a party is a party,” Nell said with the same bright grin. ”Even if it’s just wine and stockbrokers. Especially if there’s a lot of food involved. Food makes everything better.” That’s how Nell saw it, because to Nell food made the world go round. But she tried hard not to seem like a glutton. Just…an Epicurean. That fancy-smancy word was what she decided herself to be instead of something with a derogatory connotation. ”Your mother decorates herself? Oops, I guess there was a stereotype in my head after all.” She ducked her head sheepishly. ”I was assuming that you hire people for that, anyway. Isn’t that usual for parties? To get caterers to handle things like that?” She honestly didn’t know. Nell snorted at the mention of Phil’s brother. ”Since Helios likes to occupy himself with the gents, I’d be more than happy to provide entertainment.” Though Nell had a feeling she’d probably end up embarrassing Phil someway. Not that she was a horribly uncoordinated fool, but she had her moments.
With Phil walking beside her, she felt how different the air moved around her and smiled. ”Right, I forgot. Big bad Wind leader won’t have to be cold.” She winked at her friend before setting off in the direction of the mall, leading the way in case her friend didn’t know. ”Definitely,” Nell agreed. ”Just got my paycheck a few days ago and have enough food. Bills are taken care of. I’m pretty sure I can do some damage at the mall.” She was certainly not a big spender, but it wouldn’t hurt to get a few nice things, and to treat herself and all that. Approaching the large building, she threw open the door and was greeted with the heated inside. It wasn’t too busy, the usual amount of teenagers loitering around outside storefronts. Nell wasn’t in the strictest-sense a girly girl, but she was a girl and she liked shopping for clothes. So she entered stores she was sure Phillie would like, too, because you couldn’t go wrong with the big fashion lines. She did a bit of damage in getting some jeans and blouses for the spring, mostly just her wishing for the season to come upon them. ”I guess I should be getting a jacket or something since I don’t have one, buutt…” She smiled over at Phillie as they exited what must have been their fifth store. ”I just can’t wait for spring. So, since I say we shop till we drop, any stores that are your faves?”

"that is a very vague answer, nell. i would appreciate more clairty," philomena mock chided, she was only playing and it could be seen in the way she attempted to sternly stare at her friend. she took a moment to take an image of nell as a pirate into consideration. phillie gazed over at nell and took in her apperance, she found it difficult to picture her missing a tooth and donning a peg leg instead of her normal sneakers. "if you were a pirate then you would have the potential to be missing a leg and carrying a talkative pirate on your shoulder. it's a shame you couldn't commit to the career though. i would love to brag about you then, tell everyone that i had a pirate for a friend." philomena gave a weak laugh, thinking about the comical sight of nell trying to flaunt a pirate costume of halloween. her friend was nothing more than a seventeen year old girl who lived in maple hallow, but in a past life she could have very well been a pirate or a ring master or something outrageous.
to her shame philomena would have to admit that she would never fully escape the shadow of her father and his influence. she could only branch out so far before she left behind the bird name and pursued something that would be completely aspired by her own intentions. her father ultimately had a hold over what she would do with career when her four years of college education were complete. she looked over at nell and gave a subtle shrug of her shoulders. "when you know what you want you won't let anything stop you. where it is concerned with my career i have everything mapped out," she explained, keeping anything that could be described as snide or superior out of her tone. to my disappointment i can't really stop feeding off of my father's name. i want to take over bird flight company, that is my ultimate goal in life," philomena admitted, brushing her arms up and down her body. she had foreboding thoughts of jacob and her future, knowing that her goal would not be feasible when she told her parents of her intentions to pull out of the marriage.
her mood was forced to lighten, she couldn't stop herself from feeling the eagerness that was dripping off of nell's words and basically fuming off of her. she seemed generally excited and now was anticipating the vibes that her parent's party would bring to her. philomena was used to the stiff company and the odd delicacies that would send nell off of the edge. it would be a great experience for the both of them. "it will be quite the time, i can assure you that. we have caterers and decorators, yes. my mother just takes all the time to plan it out by herself. she thinks that having a party planner is too impersonal." philomena cringed at superficial she was sounding, her upraising shining through the humble demeanor she had created. "you'll wear a gorgeous dress and have impossibly tall heels, nell. everyone will look at you like you're an outcast, they aren't very opening and welcoming. rest easy though, you have my approval." her words came out light and easy but there was a somberness that lye underneath it all. rich people were all generally the same in phil's case, they were all too close minded to see how amazing of a person nell could be.
she smiled at how quickly nell caught onto the subtle change of the temperature of the air surrounding them. "we don't have to freeze, since i am the wind leader and all." |
she gave nell a secretive smile and nodded at nell. she submitted the lead to nell and allowed her to direct them to the mall, feeling the blast of heat hit her and she welcomed it. "i've got a fair amount just sitting in this clutch, in case kieran forgot that he had to pay for his dinner. i'm itching to spend it on something better then a meal now," phillie said, glancing around the store that they had walked into. they wandered into five or so stores, only glancing around and never going to deep into the store. they left the fifth store and nell glanced over at phil. "i've got no stores in mind. but what i do have in mind is treating you by buying you a jacket. consider it a gift." she wouldn't let nell argue with her, she could buy her the priciest jacket in the whole mall and shrug off the purchase. she looked over at nell and started to head into one of the more outrageously priced stores. [/div] tearing love apart, Nell blinked as Phil looked at her. Then grinned. She tried to imagine herself as a pirate, too, and found that would be a lifestyle she could grow accustomed to. Except that it would have been dirty. And sailors had superstitions about letting women on board. Still, she always wanted to see the ocean and would imagine it to be an adventurous kind of thing. She’d like that. Of course, these were fantasies of her ever-thinking mind. ”Hmm…I’m afraid it’s a no-go on the peg leg front. But I could come into a possession of a parrot. But that’s just the image part.” She laughed. ”I don’t think it’d be acceptable for a young lady to be hanging around a scoundrel of the sea! Being friends with me would be quite shameful.” It did give her an idea, though. Perhaps she should be a pirate for Halloween. It’d be her first celebration of the holiday, actually.
A shame that Nell lacked the kind of drive Phil seemed to have. Not that she wasn’t determined or anything, just…she had her doubts that she’d ever be able to make it in this world. She just entered society a few months ago, it’s not like she had ambition. And for so long she’d been told that she was worthless, that she was nothing, and well…a lot of other things that she didn’t think of anymore, that had toughened her skin. She supposed that may be the one thing to carry her through—her iron nerve. With Phil’s shrug, the Earth student smirked. ”You’ve got it all planned, huh?” she said, considering. Wow. That’s not something Nell really thought of, having a straight, clear-cut path before her. The Wind leader seemed pretty confident in her abilities, but of course she was. ”Ah, but that’s still better than sitting around. To actually inherit your father’s company…well, that’s different. You’ll be making your own money.” She nodded as if this observation was final. Sure, Phillie wouldn’t be able to separate herself from the Bird name, but that wasn’t so bad.
Nell really only had to rely on her friend’s word when it came to parties. She didn’t know how high society people acted. Not really. She sure her aunt was a special case. But let’s not think of her. In any case, she listened to Phil like a child just stepping into the world. Which she was. Nell was glad she was at least right about that and not completely naïve when it came to Phillie’s kind of life. It was reassuring to someone like her. Nell didn’t not think Phil sounded at all snobby or anything like that. ”Sounds like a big deal.” Her voice was soft with wonder, and then she blushed. Yeah, she was an ingénue, but she didn’t need to show it. And with Phil’s predictions, she still felt that feeling of awe in her. ”Heels? Well, that’s something I’d have to get used to. But as long as I have you, I don’t care about what other people think of me.” She waved her hand, because those words were true. Sure, everyone likes approval, but Nell was used to not being accepted. With her friend, though, she didn’t think that would even matter, whether the other high-society people thought of her. Returning Phil’s smile, she moved in a bit closer to share in the strange sort of warmth her friend’s adjusting of the wind currents created. Nell couldn’t help but still feel amazed whenever faced with others’ powers. Most at the Academy have known about elementals either their whole lives or since they got to the Academy. She just thought she was some sort of freak for a long time. ”As an Earth student, I have nothing to do in the winter.” She sighed a bit, but still smiled. The snow was a killer, she must say. Oh Kieran… Nell thought at Phil’s words. His name alone was enough to make her roll her eyes, but she resisted. ”The mall is definitely the best place to do that. Of course we could go to the food court, but both of us did some damage on all those donuts.” Her voice was woven with a chuckle. She found she loved doing things like this, going out and shopping and just having fun. It was during these times that she felt the best she had in years.
The Earth girl almost stalled at Phil’s words. Okay, so she had this little problem with other people paying for things for her. She didn’t know what it was, but it made her feel…uncomfortable. But she reminded herself that to her friend, buying a jacket would be like Nell purchasing gum at a convenience store. As she moved into one of the pricier stores, Nell linked her arm through hers and held up a finger as if behinning a lecture. ”All right, Phillie, as long as I can treat you to something. Anything you like!” It was her way of not feeling like a total mooch. As one would expect, she didn’t really understand the meaning of ‘gifts’. Didn’t even know how to accept them, and so she tended to thank someone offering her one over and over and over until she was satisfied that the giver understood her gratitude. And then she would pay them back. She couldn’t remember the last time she celebrated Christmas, just that it was before Tilly died and there was never much. It’s weird, the things she remembered sometimes when determined to block it all out.
