She smiled at her reply. “I guess we’ll both find out together then.” That made her feel better, a little. She wouldn’t be alone in making friends or getting to know the wrong element. She was a “freshman” too huh? She hoped she wasn’t going through the crap that she had to deal with, but something told her Nell was the type of person who could handle it, unlike herself. She’s so timid that she takes the comments people through at her, she usually ignores them and they eventually leave her alone. Eventually.
She nodded as a reply. She had the feeling that Nell didn’t really want to talk about it anymore, and she perfectly understood. Her history isn’t something to brag over herself, so she could relate. She did wonder what New York was like. She’s always wanted to go there and visit Manhattan and other big time cities there. But not the Bronx; Nell said it’s not a nice place to grow up in, and she figured it wasn’t a nice place to be at all. She saw her frown and gave a smile of understanding. She won’t pressure her into her history: when she’s ready to talk, Dani will be there.
“Yeah, I sometimes I think I am lucky I came here.” Here she could find out what she is. And maybe, just maybe, she could find out if her parents went to this same school; that is, if they had abilities similar to hers. She then smiled at her reply. She’s glad she made this Earth student’s day brighter. “You’ve done the same to my day. If I keep meeting people like you, then I don’t think I’ll have much to worry about this school year.” Maybe it was a cheesy comment, but she meant it all the way.
She followed Nell following the post it notes towards the mess hall. She waved at Nell’s Earth friend, and to her surprise, they waved back. She made a mental note to find all the Earth kids and befriend them. She took hold of her hot chocolate with a thank-you and sipped it slowly. “Mmm. So good.” She licked off the chocolate mustache left on her upper lip and followed Nell again towards the outside. Her eyes shot out around her and she nearly squealed in delight. This was so…beautiful. It took every ounce of her strength to not go out running into the field. So she stood next to Nell, quietly sipped her cocoa, and looked on at the beautiful scenery.

Dani was a pretty observant girl, Nell had to give her that. She didn’t even ask for any more information on the Earth student’s home. She might not have been all that curious, but it still gave off the impression that the younger girl was pretty darn smart. And so Nell reciprocated that—she wondered how comfortable Dani was talking about Nevada? She mentioned its snowfall and all that, but Nell extended the courtesy of silence in case the place wasn’t something Dani liked to talk about. But still, she had to remind herself that not everyone had drama with their hometown. Though no one had a completely happy past, either. She was sure the Wind student wasn’t exempt, either.
Any thoughts of terrible pasts fled with the girl’s voice. At least she was happy here, then, as every student should be. For Nell, this place was her asylum, it kept her safe. It gave her a family. And even though others may have considered Dani’s comment as a trite old movie quote or something, it made Nell grin. ”You’re a nice girl, Dani. I’m sure people will be attracted to that and you’ll be making friends in no time.” That much was apparent. All the good people she should be making friends with wouldn’t be able to resist her. So Nell believed the girl was all set in that department. Dani was the kind of person who would be able to make friends with a rabid bear, even.
Watching Dani’s eyes scan the field, she couldn’t help but smile wide. Nell downed her hot chocolate rather quickly, and after finishing it off let out a rather unattractive belch. ”Excuse me, that was not very lady-like at all.” But she said this with a chuckle as she went over to dispose of her cup in a waste bin. She waited for Dani to finish her own before going further out to find a good area for their future snowman. ”All righty then, it’s time to start on this snowman.” She went through all the information Ashton had given her while building their own snowman in her head, and knelt down in the snow to start forming the base. ”You can get the other side, Dani, so that we can make the bottom part bigger.” She’d have to remember to get a pair of gloves one of these days.
Hopefully no one would come around and mess with them, since the Fire students would be the first to come around and ruin their fun for shits and giggles. But Nell would make sure to do something about that before it happened. She had no time for playground bullies. ”Have you ever done anything else in the snow?” she asked Dani airily while packing the snow. ”Like a snowball fight or making snow angels?” It was something she’d never done herself until recently. She’d made her first snow angel in the spur of the moment and had gotten caught up in some Water students’ snowball ‘war’ where she’d been forced to build a fortress and lobby snow as quickly as possible.

“I sure hope so.” Somehow, the young freshman girl believed her. She didn’t want to sound cocky or anything, but she did think she was a nice person. At least, she tried to be. It’s hard to be kind to those who are just so difficult. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to work harder then. And also, she’ll try to be less shy, to the best of her abilities. Nell is nice, and she had a good amount of friends that were in the mess hall. These things will just have to take time.
She giggled at Nell’s belch and finished her cocoa. “It’s alright. You’re among friends.” She smiled then threw her cup out as well. She then followed Nell out further into the field. She kicked the snow in the delight as she walked. She nodded at her request and gathered some of the snow. She looked at how Nell was gathering the snow, and she copied. She started to feel bad that she’s never done this before, but for once, she didn’t blame herself. The weather chose not to snow all the years she’s been living in sunny and hot Nevada. It was so hot, that the winters there would be as low as 50 degrees.
Nell then voiced what was in her own head. Had she ever built a snowman or a snow-angel? She shook her head. “Unfortunately, no. We never had snow where I lived. And I never travelled to a state that had snow. So, this is sorta my first experience with this cold stuff.” Don’t get her wrong; she has seen snow. It was just never this much before in one setting. When it did snow, it would melt just as fast as it fell. She turned the question around, even though she probably knew the answer. “Have you?” She most likely has. She’s from New York; it snowed there all the time, from what she heard at least.

Watching as the other girl gathered snow, she chuckled a bit. ”Too bad you couldn’t have played around in the snow sooner,” she said sympathetically. ”But now you can make up for lost time. I’ve heard the snow can stay until the end of March.” She sighed a bit saying that, but it was due to her being a good ol’ Earth student. They had a pack mentality when it came to the snow, like they were all collectively depressed. She was surprised they all didn’t have clouds pouring rain over their heads. But instead of moping about it, Nell liked to do stuff like this now. Making snow angels and getting into snowball fights—just because it was wet and cold didn’t mean she was going to lock herself indoors. Yeah, locking wasn’t something Nell liked to do.
”Nah,” Nell replied softly to Dani’s question. There was really no way to explain that without going into how she wasn’t even allowed outside. Sure, in the winter months she’d sneak out, but she never once stopped to play in the snow. Without her sister, it would have been…odd. But here she was now. And she didn’t want to lie about Dani and said that she had a snowball fight before once or twice just so she didn’t seem completely weird. So instead she opted for a very vague truth. ”It snowed quite a bit during winter, but…” Nell finally shrugged. Jeez, she couldn’t even try a half-truth.
The two of them seemed to have formed a pretty good bottom, so Nell begun rolling up another “ball” of snow to start the midsection. ”I would say we could try to make the snowman as large as possible but we’d have trouble stacking up the parts.” She ran wet and slushy fingers through her hair. ”Unless, you want to make a really big one. I could try to use my powers to help out, but the snow doesn’t like Earth students much.” Ashton had managed to make a ramp, but she didn’t think herself capable of such a thing. He was a year younger than her, but she was pretty much as good as a freshman. Still, she had managed to make a (inedible) carrot before. And if Dani asked for a huge snowman, so Dani should get.

Dani nodded solemnly. “But, hey, at least I’m building one with a friend. And that’s great news about the snow.” So she had one more month with snow on the ground: A month to frolic around like an angel in the snow. That’s a lot longer than they had back where she’s from. Taking advantage of this opportunity is important. She didn’t have the best life before she got here, but like Nell said, she can make up for lost times here and now.
She understood and nodded. She took it her past wasn’t something she wanted to talk about. Dani made a mental note on not bringing up the past around Nell until she felt comfortable. Nell would’ve done the same for her, she thinks. She was relieved, and sad, that someone else had a not so great childhood. She was relieved that she wasn’t alone and if they grew closer in friendship, maybe they would talk about and relate to one another. She was sad that another person, especially one as nice as Nell, had to go through it at all. Everyone should have a happy, stress-free childhood. But everything can’t be all sugar and rainbows.
“Hmm. I would like to make a big one, but you’re right about the height.” She thought for a moment, then a light bulb went up in her head. “Hey, why don’t we use both of our abilities. I could maybe use the wind to lift the ball up…” …If she could. She figured the ball would be pretty big, and didn’t know if she could lift something up that huge. She shrugged and decided to try it anyway.

She had a sort of creed now, words that she knew to be the truth: Everyone has at least one secret that would break your heart. It’s something Nell accepted as fact. Even this girl—so sweet and kind—surely had an event, or perhaps many events, that no girl should go through. Perhaps that is why she understood Nell didn't want to talk about New York or anything about her past. Everyone had their secrets and their tragedies—Nell took it as something that united them all. Perhaps it was why she couldn’t find it in her heart to hate anyone; she related to them too well. Even the Fire and Thunder students who screwed with her. Except for her family. There was always that ‘but’, that exception. But did she truly hate them? Perhaps not since she didn’t know them all that well, but she knew she intensely disliked them. They were trying to put her in prison, after all, molding lies out of the truth.
Dani understood that a huge hulking snowman wasn’t the best idea, even though she and Ashton had done it before. But he was more masterful than her when it came to his powers. ”The bigger the better,” Nell said with a grin as she folded her arms over her chest and looked at the mound of snow they had so far. She looked over at Dani and lifted her eyebrow. ”You think you can do that?” It would be impressive, considering the girl was a freshman. But after a moment, Nell nodded as if deciding something and said, ”I could make a platform under the snow to help, and if you could keep the ball steady with your wind, we might be able to do it. Teamwork, right?” She wasn’t even sure if Dani would understand what she was getting at, but she figured time would tell if this worked. Nell packed on more snow to make the first ball even large, and it was standing at a good two feet tall now. She decided it was time.
Next to the ball they already had, she started on another with Dani’s help. Even now she worked through solutions in her head to their problem, and found she loved it. She loved being resourceful and creative and figuring out solutions like this—it was part of the fun of making a snowman. She moved back and turned to the Wind girl. ”You ready? I don’t know how easy it will be for you to lift the snow and keep the shape intact, but if I can make a platform…” Nell looked down at the snow covered ground, and pressed her hands against it. The ground underneath rose and carried the ball of snow up so that it was level with the other ball. ”Think you can use your wind to carry the ball over on top of the other one?” she asked enthusiastically, eyes bright.

“Yup! I agree. The bigger the better.” Of course she wanted it big: she wanted it very big. It was going to be her very first snowman, so she wanted it to memorable. She checked in her pockets to see if she remembered to bring her cell phone with her. Yup, she did, which was great because she wanted to capture this and show it to her parents at home.
Turning her attention back to Nell, she shrugged half-heartedly. “I have no idea, but I guess I’ll never know unless I try.” Dani listened to Nell’s directions, and turned to look at their work in progress. Another thought occurred in the mind of the little freshman. “Hmm, I don’t know if I’ll be able to lift a huge ball and stack it on top. How about I use your platform and transport clumps of snow bit by bit until it forms into a big enough ball?” That sounded like a great idea, but it will take longer than the first idea, which was to use wind to lift up a ball that would probably be bigger than herself. She’s only a freshman, her ability is nearly nonexistent, but she could do a little something.
Her idea may have been in vain as Nell started to already form the ball. She decided to try her idea first, and if she was right that she’ll be unable to lift the ball, then they could maybe try her way. So she helped her partner form and mold the snowman. She looked at the ground with amazement as Nell pressed against it and formed a platform. She then asked if Dani was able to do it. “We’ll see.” She gave her a hopeful smile then backed away from the ball. She closed her eyes and concentrated. Wind started to pick up around her, and she focused it towards the ball. Slowly, the ball started to rise off the ground. Opening her eyes, she looked to see that it was maybe an inch of the platform and she was already tired. Pushing herself more, the ball started to rise higher and higher. Pretty soon it was higher than the first ball. She pushed it over so it can hover above the ball. She gently lowered it to sit on top of it, and then she flopped on the ground in exhaustion. With her head resting on the snow, she said through panting. “Well, that’s the midsection…I never knew making a snowman was this much work.”

Nell nodded very seriously at Dani’s suggestion, as if considering it to be talk of cold fusion or quantum physics. ”We’ll have to test it out,” she stated simply. The Earth student operated through practical application. Theory basically went over her head most of the time. She had to feel her way through something in order to understand it completely. That’s why she enjoyed glasses where she could actually play around with her element. Of course, it would be even better come spring.
After she formed her platform, Dani did something quite impressive: she actually moved the ball with her wind. Not that Nell had any serious doubts. Sure, she was a freshman but surely she wasn’t incompetent. And she definitely wasn’t, as she proved by placing the torso on. Nell gave her a thumbs up with her signature huge grin. The girl collapsed, and Nell chuckled. ”That’s the fun, chica! The challenge makes it better.” Of course this was Nell, and she always liked a challenge. Probably another way she got by in life: not only did she look on the bright side of everything, but she loved to be tested, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally. She had quite a bit of endurance and one helluva tough skin.
”Now all we do is rinse and repeat for the head,” Nell said. ”Then we can start on decorating this bad boy.” It was of quite an impressive stature, she must admit. Dani should be damn proud of it, since she used her powers and helped out a lot. Her first snowman would be more than a success. Nell went back over to form the last ball, still quite a decent size even though it was the smallest of the three, and made another platform, feeling the definite drain but not letting it show. She glanced over at the Wind freshman and asked, ”Think you can do it one more time?” If not, she could figure out another way to do this. Another one of Nell’s skills: her ability to adapt and come up with creative solutions.
(we can probably wrap this up soon. ^^)

She started to think that maybe she can try out her next. The reason being was that she’s beat. That last ball took almost all the energy out of her. She smiled up at Nell’s thumbs up. The senior seemed like she enjoyed the challenge. She agreed; the challenge did make it a lot of fun. So with that, she slowly lifted herself up, swiped the snow off of her, and then focused on her next objective: the head.
Focusing the same energy on a different ball, she forced the wind to do the same exact thing: lift it up, center the ball, the lower it, only this time it took her longer to do so. She tried her best to land it gently, then rested herself against the platform. “Ok. New idea: Let’s not make a snowman this big.” She smiled at Nell as she wiped cold sweat off her brow. She walked a little further away from their project to take a better look at it. Tilting her head to the side and stroking her invisible beard, she nodded and uttered out some “Mhmm’s” and “Oh yes’” like an art critic would do. “Not bad, not bad. I would say we did a pretty good job, how about you?” It was by far the biggest snowman she’s ever since, and that’s saying a lot because she hasn’t seen very many in her lifetime.
She walked back over to Nell when the girl realized that they forgot the decorations. “Um, Nell? Did you happen to bring any decorations or clothing for this guy?” She hoped she did, otherwise they’ll either have to go back inside and get some, or give the man their clothes, and she didn’t want to do that.

Dani persevered through her exhaustion, and hefted the other ball up, thus completing the snowman. Sure, it took a while—probably longer than it would have taken should they have chosen to downsize—but it was well worth it. At her words, Nell placed an arm around the girl’s shoulders and gave them a squeeze. ”You done good, kid,” she said with pride, and then she broke out into laughter. ”Yeah, large snowmen tend to be physically draining, huh.” At Dani’s philosophical expression, Nell laughed even more, not being able to help it. ”I must say, Dani, that this is the most exquisite piece of art I have ever laid eyes on. Brava!” And with all the joking, she did feel a sense of pride. This was, after all, Dani’s first and it was pretty damn impressive. All the other snowman-builders should be jealous.
Dani brought up a good point. “Well…” She began, unwrapping her scarf from around her neck and putting around that of the snowman’s. “I have that. And we can use nature for everything else. The last time I tried to make a carrot, it didn’t turn out really good. But…” Nell dug out a circle from the snow—something she found she did a lot of—and used her powers to grow a brown carrot, grinning sheepishly as she stuck it in what would soon be the snowman’s face. ”Now he can smell.” She looked around her and found some thin sticks. Picking them up, she stuck them in the sides of the snowman. ”They’re uneven, but they’ll do. Find some pebbles for the face, then.” Jeez, this snowman business is so exhausting! She’d used a lot of her power, actually, and could feel the drain in her noodly arms.

Looking up at Nell, she smiled with pride at her, then at the accomplishment. Her very first snowman was a sight. It was hard work, but it was worth the sweat and the aches she’ll feel tomorrow. And the best part was that she was with someone; someone as great and amazing as Nell. “Thanks. So did you.” She didn’t really do much with the sculpting; she hasn’t done that before, so she couldn’t take all the credit for it. It was wrong and Nell certainly did a great job. She laughed at Nell’s compliment, then applauded at both of their success. She watched as Nell gave him her scarf. Dani followed suit and removed her hat and placed it on his head. She looked around for some rocks for his eyes, but all she found was one. “Hey Nell, can you make a rock similar to this one?” Looking at the carrot in his nose, she nodded. She looked over at Nell and gave her a small smile. The senior was almost as tired as she was. She walked over and leaned on the girl’s shoulder. “We’ve done great, but I think it’s time for a small cat-nap.” She looked up at the girl and grew her smile. She was very much glad that she met this extraordinary girl, and being friends with her. She didn’t look up to most people, but then again, Nell’s not your ordinary person and neither was she.

It was apparent that Dani was proud and happy with her first snowman—and that made Nell just ecstatic, especially that she could be a part of it. Nell grinned as the girl placed her hat atop the snowman’s head. Now he had a rather good outfit. ”All dressed up and nowhere to go,” she said ruefully, taking not of his lack of legs. Poor snowmen—can’t go anywhere!
She scrunched her lips together and sighed. ”That’s college level stuff, really… But…” She knelt down to the little circle she’d create before and said, ”I think if I can use the dirt as a catalyst, I can make a rock…” Stating this slowly, she worked her powers through the dirt, and eventually formed a relatively smooth pebble in her hand. Again, she felt the drain, but merely wiped away the sweat on her brow. Then, she moved to push it in the snowman’s eye. ”And now he can see! Glorious sight!” she bellowed this as if it were a miracle.
When Dani leaned against her shoulder, Nell laughed. Yep, she could tell. This girl would make plenty more friends. She may have not been able to see it in herself, but Nell could see it, and she was sure others could see it, too. ”Not here though! I say we go inside, make a fire, and curl up.” Of course, generally Earth students avoided fire, but she wasn’t like that. She wasn’t that kind of paranoid. Besides, they both needed to warm up and do exactly as Dani said—take a good, long cat nap.
(I guess we can either end this now or with your next post. =DD)
