[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: transparent, width: 400px; height: 300px;] it's wearing me out you're wearing me down. watching old baseball games and low budget telethons. i like watching you yourself, when you yourself is on. got time to wonder, to waste and to whine. but when it comes to you, it seems like i just can't find the time. so watch your head and then watch the ground. it's a silly time to learn to swim when you start to drown. it's a silly time to learn to swim on the way down.
Summertime naturally meant trips to the beach. It also meant ice cream, barbecues, and mosquito bites. Issy had gotten plenty of them from the walks he had become so fond of taken, and he had slathered them with calamine lotion before applying his sunblock. Alec had managed to rope him into going to the beach with him, though it really wasn't hard. All he had to do was ask, and Israel did not even consider passing up an opportunity to spend time with a friend. Especially when it was far away from his home and his arguing parents. A trip to the beach sounded perfect, even though there was one intsy little problem and that was the fact that Israel wasn't a water person.
The Wind elemental could handle baths and showers, sure, but anything bigger gave him anxiety. And as he sat on his chair and looked at the huge lake, he felt his stomach twist. God knew what was in there, and he had a lot of guesses. His mind did not go to trash or piss or any of that; instead he wondered about the chances of their being a lake monster. Though there were no "reports" of one, his fear would not let that thought rest. Bad enough it was teeming with fish. They may have been the worst thing about the lake, along with the possibility of a drop-off or other creatures that would like to snip off a toe or two.
He looked at his friend, and then down to his bag. "Uhm...okay, don't make fun of me but I brought these..." Israel opened up the tote bag and took out two rubber cylinders. Floaties. They were his little brothers and he'd found them in the basement that day before going out. A lot of Klaus' old stuff had been moved down there, but his room remained just as it used to be. He wondered if his mother ever went in there, because he knew he had a few times even though he really shouldn't.
In any case, there was no promise that the swimmies would even fit on his arms, but his forearms could still be all right...right? He tried sliding them up as he asked, "How deep is the water anyway?" He'd never actually swam out in the lake, though he had visited the beach quite a few times. His parents had always prodded him into learning how to swim but he always refused to, instead sat near the water's edge and built sand castles. His had always been great, and there was no promise he would actually stay in the water for that long. Sand castles were awfully tempting right then, though it would have been nice to take a dip with the sun so hot. It was a perfect summer day, one most people thought of as the perfect swimming occassion.

Not because of school break and going on vacation, but because he could make trips to the lake to swim. His family didn't have a pool and although some of his friends did, he didn't much like what the chlorine did to his skin. Salt water pools were alright, but not many people had them. So Alec's only choice was the lake. Sure, lakes weren't the cleanest, but it was good enough for the fish so Alec didn't complain. Whenever he was free and the day was good, he'd go swimming and bring goggles to look at the fish.
Today was one of those days. It was warm, the sun was shining, and the weather forecast said it was going to stay that way. It was perfect. What better way to spend this perfect day than doing what you love? With a friend! It'd be lame to go alone. Some people already thought he was weird because he liked fish so much. If someone found out he went alone, it'd only reinforce their opinion of him. No, he needed to stop this - letting what people thought get to him. He didn't need someone to go with him to keep people from thinking he was weird. He needed someone to go with him to share the fun on this perfect day. Yes.
So he needed to call someone. He called a couple of friends that shared his love of water first, but neither of them could come. He didn't want to bother too many people today so he told himself to ask just one more person and if they couldn't go, he'd just go himself - fuck the people who thought he was weird. He really didn't feel like going alone though so he scrolled through he contacts for a moment, trying to think who might be available. Eventually, he decided on Israel. He was a fun guy and always seemed to have time for friends. Alec knew he didn't like water, but he didn't think it would matter that much. They could stay in the shallow end or something. Issy was a fun guy and Alec liked being around him. So he texted Israel, practically begging him to come with him to the lake. It actually wasn't that hard to get him to agree to come, thank goodness. Now that he had a buddy to hang out with, Alec packed a few things for the beach and put on sunscreen, texting Issy that he'd meet him there in a few minutes.
Now, at the lake, Alec felt great. It was hot, but there was the occasional cool breeze off the lake that felt refreshing. His body was dying to just rush into the water already, but he made himself wait for Israel to get comfortable.
Alec looked over at his friend when he spoke up. He grinned when Israel grabbed floaties from his bag. "Aw, that's adorable," he giggled. He looked over the floaties and noticed they definitely weren't in Israel's size. "You sure those will fit though?" he asked. "They look pretty small."
Alec reached down into his bag and grabbed his goggles, sliding them over his head to dangle around his neck. "It can get pretty deep in the middle and on the father side of the lake over there," he said, pointing towards the lake bed opposite of them. "It's pretty shallow over here though. That's why I picked this spot today. Cause I know how much you hate the water and stuff." He trailed off, noticing he was about to start rambling. He smiled at Issy and shrugged, rocking back and forth on his feet awkwardly.

In retrospect, it might have been a better idea to have brought one of the inflatable tubes, but he couldn't find them. Not that he had a shortage of swim toys, of course not. He had been spoiled from a young age, even though his parents had always taught him to be thankful for everything he had. His father hadn't always had the money he did, he was a self-made man, while his mother had been born into wealth. So he was indeed thankful that he had such an abundance of fun toys.
And when he pulled out one of these toys, he half expected Alec's eyes to widen. Of course, not to be mean but just because Israel was an adult (which freaked him out when he thought about it). However, the Water boy just laughed and said it was cute. Which made him feel rather proud, basking in any compliment he got. "Cute is okay, I'll take cute." Above weird and childish, of course. "Anything can fit if you just believeeeee," he sing-songed.
And they didn't.
Though Issy wasn't one to say he was wrong, so he wore them with pride as his friend told him that it did drop off further in. Israel swallowed. Water, it's just freaking water. He shouldn't have been this frightened, especially not when the people that controlled the element were such fun people. Devious they could be, but fun was also something they did well. Alec including. He was such a nice guy, he felt a bit guilty for having such a weird thing about his element.
"Hey, hey, I do not hate the water," he said exaggeratdly, hands on his hips, the stance not at all intimidating with orange little floaties hanging from his wrists. "I'm just very suspicious of it. I mean, who knows what's down there?" Though he was being very dramatic for effect and humor, he did speak the truth. It was creepy, the depths and mysteries it held. He didn't trust it. He'd never had any traumatic experiences (just a few unfriendly sand crabs) but he couldn't help being automatically turned off.
This didn't mean he would not enjoy with his friend. He dropped his hands and used one to beckon Alec over near him as he started to walk toward the water's edge. "And you better be telling the truth," he said childishly. Approaching the edge, he dipped a toe in it first. "Cold," he said as he quickly pulled it out. Of course it would be cold at first, but he didn't know if he would trust it to warm up, because it was just that suspicious. However, the sweat at the back of his neck encouraged him to wade in a little bit. "Wow, okay, how do you do this?" he asked as he jumped a little bit, sand squishing underneath his toes. He wasn't as opposed as he seemed, he was just being a drama queen as usual. Only his friends got to see that side of him. Strangers only got a very quiet and serious boy.
