Joshua seemed amused when Avery went off into his own little train of thought, talking about the fact that he'd be in his thirties when Josh was his age. "Early thirties, at least." That was something. It was almost amusing that the thought of growing older did not really bother Joshua. With age came experience and it only meant that he'd be closer to fulfilling his life's goals. Most people dreaded age and he embraced it. Not that he wanted to get old, just older than he was now. His lip did not even twitch in amusement to betray him. "Deal." In contrast to Avery, Josh was very good at being serious. When he joked he could remain as straight-faced as a brick wall. Since walls do not really have expression it was more than easy to guess how flat and emotionless his own appeared.
As he had a very shameless sense of humour himself, Josh did not realise that the sorts of things he was saying could fluster a person until it actually happened. He blinked at Avery as if in surprise and then rolled his eyes at him, lip twitching. "I'm only fucking with ya. Though that's nice to know." He winked. Yeah, alright, so he'd tried for about half a second to be genuinely apologetic and then he'd went straight back to kidding around. He didn't do well with regretting things. Thankfully Avery seemed to make a smooth recovery and that at least helped Josh to feel better about the situation they were in. "I am in a monogamous relationship, thank you very much. Call an escort service or something." He scoffed and shook his head as if he would not ever dream of sleeping with Avery. Which, uh, actually he wouldn't, because, y'know, not gay. He was so shameless in his own sexuality that it didn't bug him at all to joke though. "Nah," he decided more seriously. "You can do way better." Hey, he did think his friend could set his sights higher than actually paying people to sleep with him. He might joke around like a dick but he really wasn't one.
Again he hadn't realised what kind of an affect his jokes would have and he suddenly found the Water basically clinging to his arm. "You're like a fucking burr. Impossible to get rid of." He said it with disgust as if he really didn't want Avery there but then he smiled a bit. "If I promise not to break up with you, will you let go? You of all people should understand the importance of circulation." He was a doctor, after all. Oh medical jokes. At least their conversation had moved on past all of the ridiculously sexual humour that was Joshua's norm. He really didn't see a problem with kidding around like that as long as the other person could banter back and forth. He wouldn't do it with someone like Nell or Lark because he knew they probably wouldn't react like Avery and Devin did. He enjoyed having a lot of friends that really gave him each end of the friendship spectrum. Speaking of friends, he really was too loyal to let go most of the time. Unless Avery committed some great wrong against Joshua or fucked him over in terms of trust they would have no problems.
He smirked deviously. "I know." He was well aware that he was terrifying when he was actually standing and thinking about it, it was just that it didn't often cross his mind while he actually had a deadpan expression on his face. The man was six foot three and imposing with a scar cutting across his right cheek and a scowl that could almost kill. He couldn't even deny that he could be frightening, both when he wanted to be and when he didn't. He blinked at the description of the injury. It did not really phase him too much but it was gruesome, definitely. "Sounds lovely. What the fuck'd he do, bungee jump from the cliffs?" He scoffed at the mental image. "I'd suggest a fight with an Earth but I really can't see a flower child messing with someone like that." The Earth kids really were a docile, friendly sort. Not the gonna-put-rocks-in-your-leg sort. "What do you think? Got any speculations?" What they didn't know, they could make up. A fun way to pass time until the end of Avery's shift.

The age thirty. In his head, it was the age where you really had to start thinking about settling down and whatnot. Avery wasn't getting any younger, and from his observation most couples had already gotten married or planning to. Some even have kids. Just...ugh. Whatever, he was rambling, and at least he had three more years until then. Maybe he'd find someone by then. Though, Avery highly doubted that with what his personality was like. "It's still in the thirties," Avery pointed. Man, things never really satisfied him. At that age he'd probably force himself to grow up which was already a hard job in itself. Right at this moment Avery envied Peter Pan. He wanted to stay a kid forever. "Y'know, there are times where I question if this is real life," he said seriously, his eyes wide with curiosity as he blinked. "Why you aren't my dad or something," Avery explained further, though he knew he probably wasn't making much sense. Should he even continued? Avery tilted his head, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Josh. Eh. Josh dealt with the nurse on a daily basis. He should know how weird Avery got.
Since he got here at the Academy a few years back, Avery had rarely showed his flustered side. So right, he could only imagine what Josh was thinking right now. The shameless and flirtatious nurse, flustered? No. Great, another weakness found. ABORT MISSION. "Pfft, so you could rub it in some more? SALT ON THE WOUND~" he sniffled, his arms now crossed on his chest. The thought of Josh getting more action than him both amused/irritated Avery. Which was pretty sad, now that he actually thought about it. Bleh. All flirt and no game. And forever alone. "Eww. Diseases~" Avery scrunched his nose at the thought of it. Escort services = prostitutes on the corner to Avery. And what if he got a serial killer or something! "D'aww..." Avery clasped both hands, resting them against his cheek as he grinned. "Aren't you a charmer~" Avery was flattered, though he knew Josh was joking originally. Still made him feel all warmsies inside. "Though we all know that already~" Ah, there was his arrogance. Avery didn't go anywhere without it.
He grinned cheekily at Josh, his head snuggling into the fire's arm. "And impossible to not love!" he exclaimed, making a peace sign with his fingers. Though what Josh said was true. Once you start giving the OK to Avery, he'd stick to you like glue. And people just got used to the nurse, honestly. Just look at Josh--the last person you'd think would. It was just apart of Avery's many charms. He forced seduced them into giving into him. "I don't know~" Avery shrugged his shoulders, though an instant later he held up his pinky. It was childish, but what would Avery be like without his childishness? Not the same and just not as entertaining. "Just think of it as an experiment: how long you can last with your circulation cut off until you can't feel anything!" Experiments on humans. What a doctor nurse he was.
"Well at least he admits it," Avery mumbled to himself. Let's just say Avery's first impression of Josh was a rather frightening one. And it didn't help that the fire's personality matched with it, adding onto the scare factor. It took a pretty long time before they got situated and for Josh to get used to Avery's crazy and flirtatious antics. He could only imagine how flustered Josh himself felt about it. Kind of amused the nurse when he thinks about it. "I didn't ask him, was too afraid of the gory details!" Avery shuddered. He remembered his face contouring into some mixed up horror and worry when the water came in. The water was chipper as can be though, somewhat reminding Avery of himself, but ugh. The rocks were actually embedded into his leg. "An earth? Nah," Avery agreed scrunching his nose. "Well, since they were embedded into his leg, I'd have to say a wind has got to do with." But then again, as he thought about it, that wind would have to have pretty good control. "By a college student, maybe." Though he shuddered again at the thought of a graduate bullying a high school student. "Y'know, I'm starting to think your prediction of jumping off the cliffs sounds a lot better." Seriously, what people would do nowadays...

He shrugged. Didn't bother him. He was a little confused when Avery started talking about real life, though, and the Fire frowned to show as much. Then his expression cleared and he laughed. "Apparently I'm a terrible father and influence. What horrors have I unleashed on the world." He said it so flatly that it could not really be considered a question. Hey, for all he knew, Avery's father was a great man. He didn't know about the Water and his past. Josh didn't think about those things when he was joking with others. He didn't often think before he opened his mouth. Maybe that was why he managed to offend so many people.
It really was funny to see Avery all flustered, especially considering Josh had not previously thought it was possible to get him to this point. He was rather satisfied with himself. Avery was the medical wing's resident creeper and it seemed like there was no shame nor end to his flirtatious ways. Until you brought up his sex life and teased him about it. Nice to know for the future. Josh wouldn't hold it against him, though, because he was not the sort of friend that did horrible things like that. He might bring it up once or twice in jest but he'd make sure it was never around other people (how embarrassing would that be?) and that Avery understood he was only being his usual self, ie, a troll. He ought to go back under his bridge. "You know a lot of people probably wonder about you." He lifted his brows. Avery acted like he got around with his flirting, or at least that impression could be easily given. "I try," he said with a roll of his eyes and a sarcastic tone, though his lip twitched.
Though he shook his head and acted like he couldn't care less about the Water, the words rang true. He had a strange thing about him that had made Josh stick around long after he probably would have had anyone else behaved like Avery. Maybe it was the fact that he'd been forced into it at the start. He hadn't wanted to get on the bad side of anyone in the wing and so he'd put up with it with a scowl on his face and several threats made. Avery had persisted, Josh had prevailed, and here they were in their lovely friendship nowadays. Shit happens. Blinking at the Water, he deadpanned, "If you don't let go, I think we'll need to conduct an experiment to find out how many pieces your nose shatters into." It was not a serious threat, more like a, "You can let go now, kaythanks." Still, even fake threats were scary from Joshua's lips. "I need that arm. Your face will live. Be a bit squashed, but." You could be a doctor with a broken nose but it'd be a lot harder with one arm. Possible, he was sure, but not something he was willing to go through.
He smirked. "He does it out of love." And he was talking about himself in third person but that was okay.
Brows lifted, he considered how strong his stomach must have been that he wasn't really phased by any of this. It was probably why he was so willing to become a doctor. He didn't think too much on the prospect of dealing with some of the more gruesome injuries and ailments. Sure, he got why it might turn the stomach, he was just not phased. "Shame. That'd be a story to tell the ones that cry over a papercut." He hated when people acted like the world was ending over the tiniest of injuries. It exasperated him. All right, maybe he should have been a little more sensitive and considered pain tolerance and all that but in his mind only young children should be freaking out over the little stuff. "Nah I don't think a Wind would have that much power." Maybe, though. Scary thought. He'd never gotten into a fight with one like that. "There's a sign warning people not to try, not our fault if they ignore it." He rolled his eyes. Some people, really.

The thing with Avery's mind was that it was extremely complicated. Not in the kind of genius way, but with the way it was wired. He was extremely childish, came up with the weirdest shit, but other times it was a labyrinth of emotions that not even Avery could understand where they were coming from. Sometimes he wondered if it was even worth it to explain the things he came up with, so when Josh let it drop, Avery grinned, though pouted slightly afterwards. Uh, Josh just unleashed the most amazing thing on the world, thank you very much. "Umm, correction! I'm the most amazing thing on this earth. You did a good job~" he corrected, cheekily grinning. A world without this Avery was like...major torture. It would be like a world without sugar, and everyone liked sugar, right? Think of it that way!
Avery hated the feeling of being flustered. It was something that made him feel out of control of the situation, and that's what he hated. Maybe hate was a strong word. Dislike? That was it. He disliked the burning cheeks, the inability to structure a proper sentence--ugh. Considering Avery was usually sure of himself and was able to be comfortable in any situation given to him. Though the sex part...something that was supposed to be familiar to Avery with his flirtatious nature and all. But he wasn't. Maybe back in his high school days, but he's grown better than that. "Maybe they have good reason to." Avery smirked, his eyes twinkling mischievously. He heard that a lot from people. He had flings every so often, but nothing revolving around sex. If they wanted to think that he got around, he let them. It was amusing, and it kind of gave him a boost in ego, as shameless as it sounded. But it kind of came with the territory of being someone as flirtatious as Avery was. Wasn't technically a bad thing, but he figured once those "rumors" start spreading amongst the faculty members...he'd have a lot of explaining to do. And expose his sex life wasn't as great as everyone thought it would be.
Avery narrowed his eyes at the fire once he shook his head. Nope, Avery wasn't going to believe it. Some people just couldn't help but love the nurse; he was naturally lovable, and plus, if a guy like josh could tolerate him, then almost everyone else could! Not that Avery was implying anything...but he's said it once before, and he'll say it again. Josh. Is. Scary. Simple as that. Even though sometimes he was joking and Avery knew that. It was something with the height. Yup, that was it. He didn't like the feeling of being towered over. "...okay," he said defeated, reluctantly letting go of Josh's arm. Consciously he lifted his hand to his nose, his eyes widening as he wondered. Ugh, that would not look or feel pretty. "My face won't be beautiful anymore and you'll have to apologize to my fangirls," he pointed out, more or less joking about the whole "fangirl" thing. Avery knew he had some, just never really had a proper conversation with them because they were giggling the whole time. That, or they just found him ridiculous. Most likely the latter.
"Yeah, but he could be a little more gentle~" Affection was meant to be warm and playful, not downright intimidating. Sigh. He was going to have to give Josh lessons or something.
Avery had seen all kinds of injuries since he became a nurse at the Academy. At first he really couldn't stomach them because he was used to normal injuries that were caused by normal circumstances. But coming here, he saw the hostility of some students by just looking at an injury. "Too bad there's a lot of them. Wouldn't want to waste my breath~" That probably sounded harsh, but there were a surprising number of students who would cry over nothing. It was ridiculous. "It's official. This generation lacks common sense." He shook his head, literally face palming, before cracking a smile. It wasn't like it was all false.

He wiggled his brows suggestively and smirked, not seeming at all bothered by the implications. Shameless. In all honesty he did think that Avery had a lot more going on than the man actually did. He figured that anyone who flirted that much had to have some kind of actual experience. He didn't put too much thought into it beyond that, though, because Joshua didn't swing that way and so it wasn't like it affected him.
When his arm was released, he rubbed at the spot where Avery had clung to it and mimed closing his fingers with great difficulty. "Damn it, Avery, I think the process has already started. How do you half break someone's nose?" He asked it innocently with a matching look, hiding a smirk. "You're a doctor, you should know these things. Help a brother out." Bros before hoes and all of that good stuff. Had he ever broken someone's nose before? He sure had. He knew the subtle art of shattering cartilege. Joshua was a pretty temperamental guy and it only took pushing him too far to make him snap and lash out. The worst he'd done was break someone's arm and he was lucky that they'd been too proud to rat him out or he likely would have gotten into a lot of trouble for it. He'd been eighteen and the time and so the law would not have looked upon him as a minor but a responsible adult.
He was met suddenly with a mental image of a band of young girls yelling at him for ruining Avery's beauty and charm. He considered it for a moment and then uttered a short laugh. "How do you fit through the door with a head that big?" Again his tone feigned the innocence of someone asking a legitimate question. "Maybe a broken nose would be more of a help than a hindrance." You know, so that the head that he'd inflated along with his massive ego would fit through the medical wing door. Speaking of doors, he couldn't stand the ones that were only six feet. Thankfully most could be passed through without Joshua whacking his head or else having to duck but the rare ones were annoying. Fuck doors. Then, with a more gentle tone, he patted Avery's arm and said, "I'll lend them my sincerest apologies." Yeah, right. Joshua Dale did not apologise. It was amazing that the word 'sorry' even existed in his vocabulary at all.
The Fire shook his head gravely. "He doesn't play well with others." He could feel the urge to laugh stirring within him but it was something that, over so many years of perfecting his flat-faced humour, he could easily suppress. On occasion he was serious without intending to be but it was just as likely that Josh was well aware of how frightening or convincing he could be. He used his own personality and temperament to his advantage in order to pull off certain jokes. "You don't like it rough?" He huffed as if in disappointment. "There goes all of my plans. Damn it." It was funny—no matter how much he joked about homosexuality or being interested in his guy friends, his thoughts never actually went there. The girls... ah... they weren't so lucky. He tried his best, fiancée and all, but he was still a male at heart.
A noise between a laugh and a scoff left his throat. He didn't understand people with low tolerance for pain and suffering. Josh didn't try too hard to understand anyone that wasn't like him. He could be a tad self-absorbed when it came to his way of thinking. "Bunch of pussies, eh?" Not a very nice way of putting it but it was certainly how he saw it. "Lump 'em all in a room together and tell them, then throw them a box of tissues and tell them to get over themselves. If that kid can grin and bear it, so can they. They're not five." When he was five he hadn't even been that much of a whimp! Gosh. "That they do. How much longer 'till your break, Doc? Or do you still prefer nurse?" He winked. No offence meant and hopefully none taken.

Avery looked back at Josh silently, his own lips smirking. It was like they had their own silent language that could just be spoken with their facial expressions. 'Course, it wasn't too hard to understand what Avery was implying, but hey, once upon a time he really did "get around." Mostly in college though, after his flirtatious personality actually started springing up. Was he proud of it? No, considering he broke more hearts than he should've with his flighty attitude towards relationships, but he's changed now. He blinked, eyes widening. "Wh-what?" he stuttered, well aware that Josh was joking. It still unsettled the nurse at how serious he was though. "If this were directed to anybody else, you know I would. But now, since it concerns the well-being of my face, I'll pass." Avery nodded, an innocent look on his face as he took one step away from Josh. He had no doubt that Josh could easily overtake him. Not that the fire actually would--at least Avery hoped--considering the nurse was of higher authority...and fuck that. Josh would whoop his ass. If he was serious, of course.
"What? Me? Big head? Pfft." Avery brushed it off with a scoff, though the air around him just screamed arrogant. Playfully, of course. But inside he didn't deny the fact that he had a pretty big ego. Avery didn't let that show unless he was joking, like now, because he hated people who strutted around thinking they were hot stuff. It completely annoyed him, but being the school's nurse, he bit his tongue and just dealt with it. Not much he could do otherwise unless he wanted to lose his job or something. "You better," Avery warned, giving Josh a pointed gaze. "Fangirls can be scary." That part was true, but in general. The whole "Bieber fever" shit terrified him. Say one wrong thing to a fangirl and BOOM. They're at your neck clawing and scratching and ugh. Avery shivered at the thought. Teenage girls. What could you do?
Avery rolled his eyes, grinning. "I could tell," he teased as if he honestly thought that. It took a while to warm up to Josh, but in the end it was worth it. The fire would only turn on you if you gave him reason to. Otherwise, you got yourself an amazing friend. No matter how intimidating and scary and serious he could be at times. "Rough?" Avery raised his eyebrows, the smirk on his face suggestive as he took a step closer to Josh. "Depends on the person, actually~" Meh. Whenever going into details with Avery's sex life, it was really inconsistent. Through his years of "experience," he had to say it really did depend on the person and how much he trusted them. Theoretically, if Josh did swing that way, Avery wouldn't have minded to be honest. But thinking about that right now was weird and uncomfortable and Avery immediately pushed that thought into the corner of his mind.
Avery laughed at Josh's words, trying to put a stern face on but failing miserably. "Watch your language~" Fuck that. Sometimes if the day was good, Avery would be even worse with watching his language. Bad habit, really, but he couldn't help it. "I don't think the faculty members would approve," he pointed out, but Avery so wanted to do it. It was ridiculous, some of the students, but he played along with it. Because he had to, and he also didn't have the heart to actually say mean stuff, no matter how many times he joked about it. "Nurse, thank you very much," Avery scoffed as if he was offended, though his grin pretty much took that away. Doctor just sounded way too professional to Avery, and Dr. Kael just didn't have that ring to it. Nurse Avery, on the other hand...besides, he felt like if he used the professional approach, the students wouldn't be as open to him as they were right now. Avery checked his watch and then looked at his office door, shrugging. "I guess I can go now. There literally hasn't been anyone at all today, so~" Avery grinned, winking. "I'll skip out just this once." Reaching up to ruffle Josh's hair, he guided him by the shoulder, shrugging off his coat as they headed to the door. "We can get ice cream! And you can treat me~" He grinned cheekily at Josh, his voice echoing in the medical wing as they left.
[figured that this would be a good spot to end? <3]
