if somebody's got soul.
Canada was just a vast, unexplored territory for her. She didn't even know whether there were people living up there or what, but she assumed there must have been because she didn't think anywhere was unexplored save for most of the sea. "oh. the mysterious northern lands. well...mysterious to me. americans, right?" she flashed a smile to show she was joking. at least she had a native to help her. he could be like her tour guide, aladdin to her jasmine. at least she knew of that movie, so that she wasn't completely knowledgeable. nell was going to tell him not to sell himself short, but she was glad to see him accept the compliment. she liked when people did that, when they acknowledged that they were seriously awesome people. she just liked to point it out.
as he finished the song, nell clapped her hands. not wearing any gloves at least, it actually stung because of the cold. maybe it wasn't one of her wisest decisions. "bravo, bravo!" she said while he laughed. then she said, "you know, i think tv shows are the only time someone feels the need to sing a song about mail. that and musicals." she'd never felt the need to do so. well, save for when she got her letter for the academy. that had also been a very distressing moment, realizing how easily she could be traced by them. it was not reassuring whatsoever. he told her that it was in fact a children's show, and it was a little bit of a stab in the gut because she was the weird kid unable to share experiences about going to school or riding bikes and that wasn't very fun to think of. so she easily moved on and said, "that sounds like a good idea. i have to wonder how people would translate that for adults." it wasn't really something she could speak about with knowledge. her experience with kid's shows is extremely limited.
nell wasn't very used to mean people. that was a lie, actually, considering her past, but it was true for people in mass amounts. she lived in what may have been the busiest and rudest city there was, but she hadn't actually lived in it. so she couldn't say she was very experienced with the whole new york culture. she had the accent thanks to her father living there so long that he lost his own. he had been the one to teach her everything. "yeah, but i guess they're there for a reason. i don't know the reason, though. but...live and let live? that's what i like to say." she had unfortunately experienced the rivalry that could exist between elements thanks to her parents and the marriage that their own families hadn't approved of. and she understood part of the reason her family ignored her was because she turned out as earth, which they found out through a very unfortunate event. "i think we're already pretty good off being together." two targets were not as easy a target as just one walking down the street. even though they both weren't very intimidating.
nell knew she had no hope as a bus driver for one reason and that was her height. she had to shift her seat all the way up to the steering wheel already, and a bus was a huge vehicle. there was no hope for her in that department. "the bus school, of course!" she laughed. "yeah, no clue. bus college? is there a bus driving major?" despite the joking, she actually didn't know much about college despite the fact that she hoped to be there next year. the matter of tuition was not the only thing weighing on her mind when it came to the future. he spoke of his family, and she was maybe undyingly curious about people and their relatives. she usually kept that kind of stuff to herself, though, because she was never sure how people felt about discussing that kind of thing when she was so secretive herself.
nell nodded her head when he looked around as if she had just achieved something grand. truth was, she didn't go shopping too often, even for clothes. she was used to keeping clothes for years and not getting new ones until they just couldn't be repaired anymore. everything could be do at home fixes, so she did everything...well, at home. she thumbed through some stuff, only really half-heartedly looking since she couldn't really think of anything she might need. though a warm sweater would be awesome. she couldn't get enough of those in the season. she found something that caught her eye however, and practically danced over to pacey, placing a straw hat atop his head. "voila. hats are awesome." she didn't wear them too much, but she did have a few. "you like?"

How mysterious was Canada, really? He didn't think it was so mysterious at all, but then again when he thought about it, it really was huge as far as countries of the world went. He'd always kind of taken the size for granted, but he had never thought about just how much of the space they had to actually be using. Much of it was mountainous or very flat and boring or too cold to do much on, after all. These were the things he was curious about, but he didn't know the answers, and he was sure that Nell, not having even grown up in this country even, didn't know them either. "But such a stereotype," he said, grinning a little to show that he was joking with the next bit. "So misinformed about their own next-door-neighbours, even... Americans these days." He was sure Nell was perfectly informed, though, for an American. Most of them in his experience didn't know a thing about Canada or Canadians at large.
Pacey did a miniature kind of bow when she started clapping. Well, that was always nice. He wasn't a very good singer or anything, and the wailing that he'd done at the end of the song was a good indication of the fact that he really didn't do that type of thing very often... but eh, he'd tried. He was just fooling around, anyway! "Thank you, thank you, I'll be selling signed CD's in the lobby," he joked, smiling. Wasn't that a typical singer thing to do? Well, he supposed that depended on what kind of venue they were performing in, but he'd never been to that type of event, so he didn't really know. The concerts he'd attended back in Toronto had all been in pretty huge stadiums and the like. Were there ever concerts here in Maple Hollow? He didn't know! "And probably... I've never seen a musical before, though." His middle school had actually put one on each year, but they'd never seemed particularly interesting to him, or he'd always had plans. Other than that, he didn't know anything about the world of musical theatre. "No idea, but they can probably come up with something. They do make pretty weird shows for adults these days..." He was pretty sure that the adult version of Blue's Clues would just be a comedy, though.
"Live and let live" was a very good principle for living life in general, and he nodded in agreement. He didn't really get the alliances, but he would abide by them as he had been advised by all the older students here so far. Really, Pacey just needed all the good advice he could get when it came to figuring out how to live here. "But other than that everyone does seem pretty nice, so that's good," he said, smiling. Nell at least seemed very nice, and he was grateful for that. "I guess that's true, yeah," he agreed after a second of contemplation. "Guess that's why they have like... the buddy system and stuff." Niner as he was, younger than most everyone around him at the Academy, he wondered if that sounded particularly childish to say. Hopefully she wouldn't judge him or think he was just a kid or something, though. She seemed too nice to do that, but it was hard to tell... "Bus driving major, huh? Sounds like something I could do!" he said proudly, laughing a bit. Actually he couldn't even drive a car (yet -- it was only because of his age) so that would be difficult. By the time he reached college and actually had to pick a major he was sure he'd be able to do it. "And it's probably nice. Only you probably have to know the routes really well. I wonder if bus drivers ever get lost..." They followed the same routes all the time, but still, people made mistakes or wrong turns sometimes. It wasn't like Pacey could know anything for sure anyway -- he'd never been on the public bus before!
Busy looking through the clothes that were hung up there, he was a little startled when he felt something being put over his head, and he blinked. Whatever it was -- a hat of some kind -- it fell over his eyes and he made a kind of startled yelping sound. He reached up a hand and felt around on his head. It was definitely a hat, made of something hard-ish... "What is this, anyway?" he asked, still unable to see what it was. He trusted that she wouldn't put anything awful on him still, and he just laughed a little as he finally pulled it off to take a look. "Dude, this is perfect. Completes my outfit, huh?" he asked, sticking it back on -- making sure it didn't fall down to cover his eyes again. Nell couldn't even really see his outfit considering he was wearing a winter jacket and all that, but that kind of made it better. "It might be more of your thing, though," he sang, taking it off and placing it over her head in return. "Or or or, wait, no, this one!" "This one" was a big floppy sunhat a little ways away and he bounded over there to grab it, swapping hats with her. "Perfect!"

if somebody's got soul.
nell was very misinformed for certain reasons, and unfortunately she couldn't vouch for anyone else. it was strange how she'd seen both so much and so little in her time on earth, and because she didn't know how to feel about she decided just not to think about it. it was her solution for everything and it worked for her. she didn't know that it was unhealthy to repress, so she kept at it. "we're too focused on our american eagle and baseball to care about what goes on up north." at least she knew those american stereotypes even though--surprise, surprise--she was ignorant of a lot of them. she just knew that canadians were considered really nice and chill and she thought maybe it was the climate even though she didn't like it much herself. it was nice to have an element that could relate to her now.
nell thought that pacey was quite possibly the most hilarious thing ever. and cute at the same time. it was a double whammy, so she had to say the kid was lucky. well, mostly. he did get the short end of the stick with height, but she understood that well enough that she could only feel a kinship with him. "you have a cd out too? my god, does that mean more blues clues tunes?" she didn't know what other songs there may be, but judging by the fact there was a song for mail, she figured that there would be a song about pretty much everything. though she didn't want to wonder if there was also one about things like pooping. the audio version of everybody poops. is that what kid shows were like? apparently pacey had never seen a musical before, and she told him, "never seen a live one but i have watched the sound of music." she would have felt more self-conscious about revealing she'd never seen one live if pacey wasn't in the same boat as her. that made her feel much more secure. she laughed when he talked about adult shows. "i should watch more shows, then. one of my friends keeps telling me to watch csi, but i never get around to it." she was bombarded with work all the time thanks to her playing catch up, and so the tv was usually used for background noise whenever she was writing an essay or otherwise occupied.
he mentioned the buddy system and she laughed because she'd recently learned something about girls that amused her. "the buddy system is very useful. you know girls never go to the bathroom alone, we always need to be accompanied." she didn't get why, but she accepted it. and she thought it was nice because she liked being asked to do anything with someone else. go to the bathroom? sure thing, she'd love to go to the bathroom to help a girlfriend out. she didn't realize that maybe the freshman should stick together thanks to a lovely thing called hazing, though. pacey apparently believed that bus driving was something he could really see himself doing (hopefully there was a growth spurt in his future) and she told him, "you should totally trick out your bus. put a disco ball in it and make it a party bus." like cash cab, except you didn't win money and she didn't even know the existence of the show. she paused to consider getting lost on the bus. if she were a bus driver, she could see that happening. "that seems really, really terrifying. could you image being stranded on a bus?" they weren't the most comfortable of vehicles, that was for sure. or at least the ones she'd been on, but maybe her idea of pacey's pimped out vehicle would have some nice cushiony seats.
she felt bad when the kid yelped, especially when she felt like laughing because she couldn't get over how adorable he was. even his cries were adorable. am i a bad person? she really hoped not. "sorry!" she said, pulling her lips in between her teeth in an apologetic expression. she was about as tactful as a stampede of zebras. but he didn't seem to bothered when he asked what it was and then laughed when he took it off. "i know right. you look stunning!" she pretended to hold a camera between her thumbs and forefingers and snapped a few pictures of him. she ducked her head down a little as he moved to put the hat on her head, claiming that it might suit her more. "oh, you flatter," she told him with the air of a 40's movie star, watching as he went to get a sunhat. she laughed when he traded and said, "oh no, this is much better. we are buying these and walking down the street with them because it is obviously summer." that was the appropriate season for hats like these, and they could totally pull off the look. they were just that awesome.

Those were indeed two stereotypes that he could agree with, and Pacey nodded. Everyone knew the American stereotypes, just like everyone -- at least everyone with a sense of humour -- knew and could laugh at the Canadian ones. Canada was a fun country like that, he thought. Though America had a few nice things, like... like bigger cities and shit like that, he wouldn't trade his own Canadian...ness for anything. "But up here we have Tim Hortons and hockey! Fair trade-off." Hockey was way more interesting than baseball any day, he figured. People couldn't beat each other up in baseball, but NHL hockey was full of fighting. It was pretty hilarious, truth be told.
Hey, Blue's Clues tunes were very legitimate music, but it was with a shake of his head that he answered. "Nope, not just Blue's Clues! Also Dora the Explorer and Pokemon," he said, grinning. Alright, Pokemon was admittedly for a slightly older audience than the other two shows, but it was still awesome and a part of his childhood. Plus, the theme song was awesome and he couldn't think of any other songs from Blue's Clues. Was there a theme song? Every TV show had a theme song, but he didn't know what the one for this particular show was at all. He was amazed that he remembered the mail song! "Oh! I've seen that, I think, when I was little. My mom really likes that movie." They'd also used to sing the songs, back in his elementary school music classes, especially that "doh, a deer, a female deer" one... Sadly at this point that had been a while ago and he had no idea about the movie or its songs anymore. "You should! What else do you actually watch?" Apparently she didn't watch CSI, but neither did Pacey. He did watch TV, though, even if he didn't follow most things religiously. He found a guilty pleasure in watching Jersey Shore but he wouldn't admit that without prompt from her, so hopefully she didn't mention it.
As a teenage boy who, admittedly, could be the type to absolutely fawn over girls sometimes, Pacey did in fact know this fact. He didn't know why that was, why they felt the need to go to the bathroom together (it was just a bathroom, dang) but he had long ago accepted it. "Why is that?" he asked now, hoping that Nell had the answers for him. Mostly when he'd asked, in middle and perhaps late elementary school, girls had just shaken their heads and said something, but he'd never really gotten a satisfactory answer. He was convinced that they either had no reason and were just messing with him, or were keeping secrets, like there was a vending machine in there and they needed two people to operate it or something. He wanted a vending machine in the boys' bathroom... That would be nice. "Dude, I should. And all these strobe lights, and tinted windows so no one can see what's going on. But they could totally suspect, 'cause it'd be one badass bus. VIP's only." He laughed, a little excited at the thought even though it would never happen and he would never actually become a bus driver. "Nah... I'd go crazy. Unless it was the party bus I guess, but still. Especially if you were in the middle of nowhere and ran out of food." The drive into Maple Hollow had been one long, empty road, actually, so maybe this wasn't so much of a stretch.
Pacey didn't think it was a big deal so he just laughed, shaking his head a little. He still couldn't see but he had, obviously, heard her apology. "Can't see a thing." He reached out a hand in front of him -- slowly, so that he didn't whack her in the face or something by accident -- and grappled around at thin air as if trying to grab onto something, but he wasn't really searching. Once he'd placed the hat back on his head a little more properly, he posed for the imaginary camera she had. His phone had a camera but he was too lazy to reach for it and he was very content to just do this instead -- make himself look awfully, awfully effeminate as he posed for each of her pictures. "We have to! Let's do it! And pfft... If you have a tuque to put on under it then it's not so bad," he said, indicating the hat that he'd pulled off of his head himself when they'd entered the store. Tuques were perfect in winter, even if they got static all over the place. "I feel like we need matching outfits or something, though." What types of outfits could they make to match with these hats? He had absolutely no idea.

if somebody's got soul.
nell's eyes brightened as if she'd had an epiphany when pacey mentioned dora the explorer. "i know that one!" she said over enthusiastically. it was on when she came home from work on the weekends, and also when she got up early for school. she had wonky hours half the time so she never knew when she'd catch it. she wished she could have had a show like that back when she was learning spanish, but now she could watch it while happily telling dora where the big mountain was that usually sat right behind her in plain view. nell enjoyed watching someone with the same directional challenges as she did. she laughed when pacey talked about his mother liking the sound of music. "you're making me feel like an old lady. not that your mother's old! i'm sure she's young. ...as young as a mother should be." now she was faltering for words to make up for her verbal faux-paus. "...you're mother's a very nice lady." her neck was heating up, which she supposed was a good thing in the weather but she felt faint. all over something she believed could be taken the wrong way. she calmed herself as she tried to think of some shows. "i usually watch cartoons now, but really just spongebob and fairly odd parents." she watched more films than shows, but she supposed she was playing catch-up when she turned on the television whilst studying.
unfortunately for pacey, nell was just as clueless as him about the reasons behind girl code. she just happily went along with whatever someone said, just happy to be with anyone willing to give her time. perhaps that made her a sheep, but she wasn't looking to lead anyone into anything. she just liked people. "i don't know, actually. it's a part of the girl code, and we must not question girl code." or she didn't because she figured that it was something she should know through some genetic code in her dna, the xx chromosome should have her informed. should they have been getting excited about a hypothetical bus that would never come into existence? probably not. she didn't even know that there were such things as party buses, so this was particularly mind-blowing and her mouth was slightly agape before she said, "best. idea. ever. you could gather people up from maple hollow, right. and just tour all over canada. and we'd never have to leave the bus to do anything. hey, i'd pay for it!" she didn't like to be in small places, so she would be one to leave the bus quite often, but it was still a magnificent idea. "you just need that party bus licence." and the jury was still out on how to get that.
nell just watched amusedly as pacey grabbed at...nothing, shaking her head slowly. "let me just say it's an awesome hat," she joked. and it was, as he soon found out. totally awesome and in style, even though nell's thoughts on style may not have been the same as the designers in new york for fashion week. she giggled when he played along and posed, half-wishing she could pull out her phone and take some for real. but she remembered being tackled to the ground by a friend who did not enjoy having her picture taken when being silly, and never since had done such a thing. "and what, may i ask, is a tuque?" it sounded funny, and reminded her of torque which made her think of cars so she supposed it had to be a good thing. "matching outfits for matching insanity, of course!" she said, beginning to look around before she saw the perfect outfit for the perfect hat. "hawaiian shirts, yes, yes, yes." hawaiian shirts in winter, it didn't get more ironic than that.
