About you. That was what he wanted to say. Those two words were threatening to fall from his lips, to basically leave the conversation open for something he did not want to discuss right now. It was not merely the protective streak he felt over Sandra, it was her in entirety. She had been on his mind a lot lately. Her face appeared just about every time he did or said just about anything, especially in regards to his party habits. Guilt scratched at his insides whenever he thought about getting his fix, wondering if it was really worth it. It's what I've always done. A means of escape, a way to drown the rest of the world away. Unfortunately life was not as bad as it used to be so it went from escape to habit. A bad habit. Devin sighed and looked at her with a smile, shaking his head. "Really, it's nothing! If it were concerning I would tell you." And that was a bold faced lie, but what else could he do? Tell Sandra the truth and risk ruining a friendship? No. It was not worth that.
"Yep! And one day I will be master at drawing the maple leaf," Devin boasted, thumbing to himself with a smile. "Like, so boss that they will come to me and ask me to work on maple leaves for the flag." That would be the day! For now he would stick to drawing little leaf doodles all over the place. He needed to enhance his drawing skills for his autographs, yup. Because like Sandra said, once popularity kicked in he would need to sign autographs and it would be neat to have a little symbol next to his name. What better than the leaf? You could not go wrong there. Devin's face lit up and he clasped his hands together in a child-like eagerness. "Oh, pictures! So many pictures. I have a bunch of photo albums you know. A lot of memories and stuff." From family to friends, Devin had everything stashed away in albums somewhere in storage. Maybe one day he could pull them out and show them to Sandra. She might enjoy hearing stories of his childhood and all of the crazy stupid things he had done over the years. "I'll need to pull them from storage and show you at some point, if you're interested." That would make for a relaxing afternoon. Snacks, drinks, movies, and a small trip down memory lane.
Devin smiled at her, his eyes bright and hopeful. He was glad to know that Sandra--or, any of his friends, really--were not eager to disappear without saying a word. He was attached to the people around him, those closest to him, and Devin knew for a fact that he would be devastated if they were to up and leave. "Well, at least you'll tell me. Because then I'll have the chance to beg you to stay." And he probably would, too, even if it meant crawling on his hands and knees. He would grab her ankle and tell her not to go. Devin thrived off of the company and attachment to Sandra and the others. Corny as it was, they were the reason he pushed forward every day. The reason he looked past Lauren and all of her bullshit.
Adorable? How many times had Sandra called him that throughout the course of their friendship? A lot, from what he could recall. Even so, the more recent incidents were the most memorable because Devin was finding himself more in tune with her comments, her smile, everything. He had always listened to her and always paid attention, but there was a different level of attention now. The level that made his heart feel strange and left his stomach in butterflies whenever she looked at him. "Pffft. Google. Didn't I tell you? I'm a human computer! I'll just magically whip it out of nowhere. All you need to do is ask." How strange would that be, to walk up to someone and ask them a question that not everyone knew the answer to and they spilled it out like some sort of living search engine. "Woo!" Devin shot his hands up into the air as though he were about to take the plunge at the top of a roller coaster. "Adventure! I like adventures. Life would be so incredibly boring without them." Not that he was an overly adventurous person or anything. Devin was not the type to go out of his way to get injured or do something stupid. Well, not when sober anyway. Drunk was a completely different story. 'Look mom, I can fly!'
No matter how many times he tried to prepare himself for an awkward moment, nothing ever set him up to give any sort of proper reaction. Like now, when he was caught rolling about on the couch with Sandra. It might not have been so bad if this had been a one time thing, but Athena had walked in on their awkward moment before and so now it was twice. She looked disbelieving, and he knew for a fact that after Sandra left there would be a discussion. Well, more of an explanation than anything. He did not want Athena to think he was messing around with Sandra when they were not even dating. Athena nodded to the other girl and smiled at her before glaring at Devin again. "Good! I'm glad he does." She knew for a fact that her brother would never willingly attempt to sabotage a friendship, but still made her warning rather clear. She smiled and chuckled. "You probably were! DJ is such a girl when it comes to being tickled. Feel free to beat him in a tickling match any time." Devin's expression dropped when he glanced at his sister but said nothing as she disappeared upstairs. This was so awkward. "Y-yeah. We weren't doing anything weird or anything. But still." Rubbing his neck, he sat back down and was determined to focus on their project for the day. Anything to avoid this awkwardness.
