[cs=3][rs=4][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][bg=FFFFCC] Joshua almost smiled when she accused him of being difficult. He was indeed a difficult person, especially when it came to a matter of money. Hell, he hadn't even accepted the funds for a short cab ride home when Nell had offered. He'd been drunk and broke and very irritated but he still hadn't taken the easy way out because it had involved spending the money of another. His gray eyes softened when she went on, though. "You don't have to handle this alone any more," he reminded her gently. He was willingly dragging himself into this so that he could support her and shoulder at least some of the burden with her. He couldn't sit the trial for her or stop them from forcing her to relive her past, but at very least he could be there for her. That was all that he could give and so he was giving it whether Nell was ready to accept it or not. She seemed to be settling into the idea of his accompanying her, however, which relieved him. He didn't want to turn this into some sort of an argument or dispute. If he thought that she really didn't want him there then he'd have withdrawn his offer in a heartbeat, but the two were slowly getting better at reading one another. She needed this. She had admitted it herself. "I'll do anything I can for you," he said. "All you've got to do is ask." There were some things he couldn't do but if anything were in his power that she wanted, she would have it. Anything to make her happy. Especially when there was an upcoming trial that might just split the two of them apart for a long time. He tried his best to be optimistic and not think of what would happen if Nell were convicted. He blinked thoughtfully at her question. "Telling the police, you mean?" He didn't really know what to say to that at first--this was made clear by the troubled look that crossed his features. At first he wanted to say that he did regret it; he wouldn't have these scars if he hadn't betrayed them. However, there were other things that factored into the question. What else would have happened? "I'd be in jail if I hadn't," he realised, and a sharp chill ran down his spine as he thought of this. He'd only been fifteen at the time. Would they have sent him to a juvenile detention centre and moved him into jail when he was old enough, or would they have found a way to try him as an adult? Neither prospect was very sunny. "Either in jail or incarcerated somewhere else, I think. They wouldn't have let me off easy." They had wanted to bring down the gang that they knew were plaguing their streets--fifteen year old Joshua had been an easy ticket to fulfil those desires. They wouldn't have appreciated it if he'd refused and he had little doubt that they'd have landed him somewhere bad, even if it wasn't the jail cell they'd threatened him with. "So... I guess not. I regret being there with them when it happened, but... I can't regret snitching since it would have turned out bad either way." He traced the deep cut on his palm, remembering how he'd foolishly grabbed the blade of the knife in an attempt to wrestle it out of his captor's hands. Yeah, that hadn't been the best decision of his life, either. Joshua cheered up when Nell confirmed that she still had the desire to accompany them. He loved his family but the prospect of a vacation was much more fun if he had someone close to his own age (especially his girlfriend) to share the experience with. Annabel would likely want to tag along on a lot of their adventures but as long as she wasn't too much of a brat Josh didn't even think he'd mind. After all, it wasn't like he and Nell were going to spend the entire time making out on the cliffs or something. They weren't like that. "Next week, I think," he admitted, then winced and realised, "I should have told you sooner. I guess I just got caught up in planning." Would that change anything? He knew that packing might be an issue considering she didn't have much forewarning. He was slightly relieved when Nell said that she didn't have any other plants--at least she wouldn't have to cancel or rearrange her schedule for this. Still feeling a little bad for not informing her more quickly, he said, "I could come over and help you pack, if you want." Not only would that take some of the weight off her shoulders but it would give him an excuse to spend more time with her. Joshua was always looking for excuses to spend time with Nell. She had a good impact on his overall mood. | |||
