"Yea I know but you can have it now." He said with a sharing smile. "It's alright take it." He said urging the girl to take his offering. He watched her drink it more carefully taking slow long sips. She carefully set the water bottle against the ground and Ace looked up at her. Was she done? Or was she just waiting for something. He wanted a sip but he didn't reach out to take the bottle, it was hers now. He didn't want it to seem like he was taking it back. That was just mean.
He perked his ears up as she tried to ask him a question. It seemed she asked two questions. Two very very simple questions, two questions that one wouldn't really hear asked. Yet those two very simple questions had such complicated answers. "Well, friends are." He paused and tried to think about it. Then he opened his mouth again. "Friends, friends are," He paused again trying to reassemble his words so that they fit the question right.
"Friends are people that you can trust." He said that was the closest he could get to it. But he tried to elaborate. "Their people who you can be with and um laugh around with." He said he was using hand gestures now trying to make his body language help explain this difficult explanation. "They are people who you can share secrets with, and people you help and they help you back." He said still thinking of things his friends did. "Friends, have fun together and you can depend on your friends to help you out." He said now satisfied with his answer.
"How do you become friends?" He said repeating her other question. How do you become friends, Sometimes it's just something that happens one instant and sometimes it takes a while for someone to become your friend. "Well sometimes, it sorta just happens." He said then he continued after finding another word, "Or sometimes it may take a day or two for some people to finally be friends." He said nodding. "Maybe even longer." With Ace well sometimes he just became your friend through one random encounter. Or sometimes it took him a little bit to become friends. Ace made friends really easily. "Sometimes friends can happen from some weird moment that only lasts an instant. Like If one person find's someone funny, and then the other person thought that same person was funny, they can be friends. " He said with a shrug. "So do you want to be friends with me?"

Nell had tried twice to find the words to explain, then she'd given up and had to actually do that act so that Deirdra would understand. So when Ace got to his second try in answering her question without success, Deirdra wondered if he would do something physical to make her understand. She got a little wary, then. It would be a little less welcome from a boy who was considerably bigger than her, whatever he chose to do.
There was, however, no need for her to worry. He started in on his explanation, obviously grasping at straws and little descriptions that maybe conveyed the point. Deirdra found herself tilting her head a bit more, her frown gaining a bit more definition as she made herself a little checklist. Someone she trusted? Her uncle. Someone to laugh with? Well...had she ever laughed? She had, during some of her episodes, but those hardly counted. They were not happy laughs. Finally, Deirdra decided that she hadn't ever laughed before, and turned her attention back toward Ace.
He started answering her second question then. It was just as confusing for her. Though she usually had a blank expression, there was some different quality to her features right then that made it pretty obvious that she was not comprehending. Sometimes long, sometimes short. ”You've both... got to think someone's funny?” Some small bit within her began to tell her she was being completely thick and ignorant, and it had an effect. Deirdra ducked her head the slightest bit, breaking eye contact. She took a deep breath, waiting for his reaction as though it were going to be a blow with his fist.
Did she want to be his friend? Deirdra was surprised that he asked that right out. And, like many other things, she wasn't sure how to respond to it. Did being his friend mean he would want her to share her secrets with him? Trust him and laugh with him? She didn't think she could do that. The earth girl looked at him for a long, long moment. She thought very hard, then decided that she didn't want him as a friend. He would hurt her, or he would betray her, or he would try to control her. She didn't want that. But she also didn't want him to react badly, so she said what she thought at the time was a lie, ”Maybe.” |

Explaining what friends were was really really difficult. It was like going to a blind person and describing what a color was. Even though that was more impossible than defining what a friend was. But still it was really difficult, like trying to beat someone who had every advantage over you. He was a drowning man clutching at straws just to get a breath of air. He couldn't describe what it was, it was something everyone should have known from the moment they met another person. A friend is something that happens naturally. Like the rain coming down, or the sun rising. It just happened.
"Well not that you have to think someone's funny. Ahh." He said sighing in frustration." I'm sorry its really hard to describe. Becoming friends is sorta something that happens." He said nodding at that last statement. "I can tell you one thing though, you know your with friends when you don't have to worry about anything, you can easily smile with them, and laugh with them. It's like being surrounded by people you love. And that's what friends do they love you for who you are, no matter what." Ace said satisfied with what he had said. He saw her duck her head and concerned he asked, "Hey something wrong?" He asked softly not touching her but trying to look at her eyes, even if that meant he had to duck his head a little to catch a glance at her eyes.
He glanced at the girl and she answered him "Well that's better than a no." He said with a laugh. He had let out a breath he hadn't known he was holding. Well it meant that she forgave him for slapping her across the face. He still regretted that, but he didn't bring it up again. "Well how bout we become Acquaintances? It's sorta like friends but not yet friends. Erm. It's in between friends and strangers, it's a person that you know and might become friends with." He said with a nod. Then Ace's phone rang. HEY LISTEN it shouted. Ace quickly fished it out of his pocket and answered. "All right. Yea hold on I'm gonna go there now." He said hanging up and putting it back into his pocket. "Sorry I have to go, but maybe I'll see you around." He got up. "Bye Deirdra." He said with a wave and then he left
