The remark had been an outburst in a moment of agony, not something that he had wanted nor expected a response to. His own retaliation was another glare. The anger in his eyes was glazed over with pain. Very funny. Devin wasn't trying to be funny but Josh felt like it was a mockery of him. He felt like everything was stacked up against him right now. Selfish, pain made it feel like the world revolved around him.
Had Devin been anyone else, he would have gotten a lovely snarl of, "Touch me and you'll lose your hand." As this was his best friend and Josh was mostly snapping out of pain and frustration, he settled for an irritated scowl. "Don't coddle me." He figured that was answer enough as he walked somewhat awkwardly toward where he'd parked the Lamborghini. I'm not a fucking cripple. My legs aren't broken. This was what he hated the most about pain. People judged you, they assumed that you would appreciate their help. He didn't want help. He didn't want to think that he needed help. At the same time, he was in no fit state to drive. This would have to suffice.
He wasn't sure whether being in the car was an improvement from leaning against the wall of the paintball range or not. On one hand, he no longer had to focus on keeping himself upright but on the other, he was in a sitting position and couldn't do much in terms of adjustment to help the pain. There was slight reassurance in that it had dulled a little from the initial impact but it still hurt a lot and every breath was like breaking them all over again. He wished he'd just go into shock so that it didn't feel as bad as it was. His only response to Devin's words was to shake his head. It was a non-verbal 'whatever'. Part of him knew that Devin would never betray him or his pride like that but he wasn't in the right state of mind to be reasonable right now. He just wanted the fucking pain to go away and then he wanted... for god's sakes, he just wanted to be alone. It was so much simpler when he didn't have to pretend.
He took notice of Devin's extra-careful driving and snorted. "You drive like my grandma." He hadn't seen his grandmother in a couple of years, as the woman lived in Nova Scotia, but that was besides the point. It was Josh's way of remarking that he'd noticed. He gave no visible sign of the relief he felt as they pulled into the hospital parking lot and he got out of the car. He was on the hospital's list of people to impress—alongside wealthy benefactors and other useful folks that the place didn't want to anger, Josh was the son of one of the owners. Normally he would have refused any sort of special privilege such as earlier treatment but in all honesty he wanted to get this over with as soon as possible. His name was called and he gave Devin a grim twitch of his lip. "See you in a bit." He would want to be seen alone so that his friend didn't get to know if he had indeed punctured a lung or damaged something crucial.
[totally understandable! <3 this can end here if we want, or...?]
