if nell thought lark was serious, she would have asked her if she was okay, if she went around licking poles for nutrition. but the absurdity of the statement comforted her. she really didn't want any of her friends licking any strange thing outdoors. "i really need to check out the telephone pole nutritional facts then," she said seriously. "i mean, it's not like i can come up with something you can contract from a pole at the top of my head." she just knew that it wasn't all right on any level, even when you were triple dog dared. in the winter. in that moment she realized that stoners were the equivalent of young elementary school kids. it was the perfect comparison. she leaned in close to her friend when she asked after making food wherever she went and said, "what you don't know is i have a lamb stew in this bag right now. but it's for later."
nell actually couldn't say that she had a favorite candy, but then again, she didn't have a favorite anything. it was always a toss-up between one or another, though she had to admit that shepherd's pie was hands down her favorite. which was strange for someone as passionate about food as she was, someone who could cook whatever she wanted. "they're probably the healthiest candy. and not that healthy at all. which is saying something." chocolate covered raisins didn't exactly scream 'physically fit' but she supposed that was the point of candy. she definitely did not eat as much as josh, she made sure of it and since she was always concerned about his health because he had a tendency to focus too much on one thing at a time, she also wanted to make sure that he didn't gorge himself on sweets when he did eat.
what lark said did make sense. she's gotta embrace the autumn, she's gotta sniff the autumn, she's gotta lick the autumn, she's gotta wash the autumn, she's gotta date the autumn, she's gotta be the marble. nell sighed as lark turned down the offer to be the flamenco dancer, instead the guitar player. "kay, then i will be the dancer, and we can take our show on the road." she was sure they'd appreciate it in spain, or latin america. and they would be a sensation. and nell had to say, she loved the sound of the spanish guitar. she liked a lot of music anyway, but even if she couldn't choose a favorite anything, she loved different stylings for different reasons. she was sure a musician like lark felt the same way. the earth waved her hand. "i don't do well being the center of attention." then she blinked. "which doesn't really bode well..." she had never gotten high marks in self-esteem. she had gotten better -- not even realizing it -- but she still wondered how she would handle being the bride. all eyes on her. oh dear. she suddenly wished it would be josh walking down the aisle.
fondue must have been the key, the secret spot to lark's heart. everything tastes better in chocolate. everything. and they could afford it, though nell was never one to make too much note of josh's money. she was slowly admitting to herself that it was a nice kind of security. "there should be a wedding olympics. josh and i would win everything." she was determined they would have a great wedding, despite her ineptitude when it came to all of it. luckily, decisions they had to make came pretty easy, easier than she would have expected them. of course, she had been awaiting a grueling and stressful three months. didn't exactly work out that way. "you know, until you and ash tie the knot. eventually." she linked her pointer fingers together, smiling broadly. nell looked at the menu as lark did before taking out her phone to check the time. she shook her head. "shouldn't be busy until later. i'll be helping out around the home." anyone who knew her understood she spent a bit of time at a group home, volunteering. it wasn't a "hobby" but something she wanted to do. "other than that, i'm all yours!" she threw her arms wide, almost forgetting she was running on fumes. she didn't mind so long as lark was with her.
