things always seemed so easy with josh and she supposed that was because rich people had it easy. the amount of people to invite? let's just see how big this place is. it stunned her sometimes, but she nodded to show that she understood. she figured she'd have to look in her phone for all her contacts, even though she knew there was a few she would not be inviting. rafael was still on there, and so was jane. then she thought of her father again, and wondered if he'd even want to give her off. at one point she thought that he'd want nothing to do with her even when she wanted to make amends, but now it was a question of whether or not he felt it appropriate. she wanted it because it was the normal, tradition thing to do. she needed that now, she wanted this normal family. "aye aye," she said when he told her close friends had priority. which meant her entire contact list. and hearing that she could call his parents whatever she liked brought a warm smile to her face. she wanted to be accepted into the dale fold, and having that kind of permission made her feel that way. though she knew she would never be a real blood family with them. it never mattered. she didn't care much about blood anymore.
nell shrugged, scrunching her lips. "hey, i'm never going to stop you from trying. shoot for the moon, cariño." if she were more familiar with stereotypes she'd have made a joke about fashion turning him gay, but there was a lot she still didn't connect. and anyone who knew josh knew about his shades, though she had to wonder if that was really fashion. it did make her feel like a badass whenever wearing them, even if they were the cheap kind. her shades tended to break a lot, so she either glued them together or got new one from the dollar store. though she did have one pair of carreras. she was better with music, though which he brought up. "so that's like a dj right?" she didn't know whether or not a live band was something they could do. one movie she hadn't seen was the wedding singer. "if we do, we can just improvise! like if we forget the music we can do like an a cappella free bird jam session." she imagined lots of lighters which would be pretty damn awesome. probably more awesome with an actual band, though.
it was easier to think of that near future than the far away future. their future. and what could happen. people change. she didn't realize it, but she had changed over the years, ever since coming to canada. what if they grew apart? what if either of them changed too much? questions like these had her keeping her feet firmly planted in the present. she leaned back, a smile twitching to her lips as she thought about the question. "i don't think i'd be here if i wasn't." there was nowhere else she'd rather be than with him, and that was the god's honest truth. it was because she didn't want to think of the future that she stayed. maybe she would have been a lot more flighty if she did wonder about it all the time, maybe she would have turned down the proposal. but she didn't think like that. josh did, but she tried not to worry about what that meant for them. well, until situations like this came up. but when he spoke again, it seemed that they shared the same feelings. "i like you being different," she said with the same simple acceptance she used whenever she decided on something. she may not have the most artful way with words most of the time, but she preferred to be up front and direct. and if she didn't like josh's differences, she wouldn't have considered being with him.
in truth, nell didn't really need the pinkie swear. she just enjoyed falling back on something that was reassuring to her, something from the past that she had always known. she may not have actively believed in the power of all her childish superstitions, but they stuck with her. she locked pinkies with him before breaking it and smiling. it would be a while, which gave her another twist in her gut considering it was the future rushing up to meet her and tell her that she needed to think about these things if she wanted to keep a healthy relationship. she was never good at that. she had a lot of proof at how skilled she was in destroying relationships. though she supposed everyone who stuck around her vouched for the fact she wasn't completely lost. "i guess as long as they don't come to me asking if i need a place to stay or something," she said as an aside. no, she didn't really care either. because when she thought about it, her reputation was already dirty and how could it get any worse? she'd have to contemplate genocide. "unless you really are fighting with me and i just don't know." apparently he had concerns he hadn't told her about. plus, she could be naive sometimes, but usually she had the capacity to know when someone was angry with her.
