The stress is eating at her as she looks down at the mess of brochures of possible graduate schools. Her mom suggested for her to look at some, because she's almost done with her undergraduate years. Yeah she goes back in January and will be a junior. It was crazy how fast the year passed by. But does she really have to think about this now? It feels like her mother is pressuring her to be like her father. She was close to him, but that doesn't mean she has the smarts like her father did. She's not graduating until next summer, but by then it's probably a bit late for her to apply to the right graduate schools and go through interviews. Gabriella let out a long sigh of exasperation as she looked down at one school that caught her eye. It's too far from home, but it has everything that she needs to pursue her career in the medical field.
Gabriella starts flipping through the stack of brochures again, trying to find one that was close to home, but also have to have a great program to lead her to what she wants to do for the future. All of the schools look great, but not many of them have what she needs. One of the reasons that Gabi stuck with the academy for her college years was to save the trouble of picking a university, but now she has to do so for graduate school. She knows it's optional for her to do so, but she wants to go through with graduate school. That's why she's looking at these brochures. The girl lets the brochures lie flat on her lap as she puts her head up to look up at the gray gloomy skies of winter. She does not want to look at those brochures again for until another month.
Gabriella squints her eyes because the wind starts blowing, and her hair is starting to get into her face. The girl looks down and fixes her black hair, and she realizes that her brochures are flying all over the place. Gabi was lucky to catch a few that were left on her lap before they flew away. She held onto those while she started running around after the ones that managed to get away from her. Gabi had to continuously tuck her hair behind her ear as she managed to grab some that were close by. The wind dies down a bit, and she was happy about that. Now it will be a lot easier for her to grab her brochures. Was there a wind elemental somewhere or something? That wind came out of no where. The girl pushed that thought away as she found a brochure for The University of British Columbia near by. She was about to grab it but the small breeze moved it away from her.
She chased after it, until she saw a foot stopping it from going anywhere near the fountain. The girl looked up to find a familiar face. He's from the academy, and she couldn't really give that face a name. John, no...Jesse? No...Josh! His name was Josh, the fire elemental that she actually didn't really hate. And she's hoping that he doesn't really hate her either. Sure there's the alliance and all that but, why should one's element matter? Gabi is a loyal person and she will never betray a friend, even if they are not part of the "alliance".

The cold winter air cut down his through like knives as he inhaled, for though he did not feel most of the effects of the cold he could not shake the effect it had on his breathing. Winter was his least favourite season of the four. It's only redeeming quality was Christmas and there were places that did not get any snow at all on Christmas, so the fact that it was associated with snow was really the fault of the country that he lived in and others like it. I wouldn't mind a green Christmas, he thought to himself as he walked along the ploughed paths of the park, his thick hiking boots crunching as they made contact with the packed-down snow. It'd be kind of nice, actually. Warm. He loved the warmth. Joshua was quite sure that he could live in the desert and be perfectly happy about it, so long as he had a constant supply of water to keep himself from dehydrating. He could not get sunburnt and did not tan, so he didn't think he'd have a problem with the insanely high temperatures. There was always skin cancer but he was probably immune to that, too, since he was immune to all the other debilitating effects of the sun. It was a pretty good deal if you asked Josh, not that anyone ever had. He didn't have a lot of people that he could talk to about random things like elemental facts because the fact that he was a complete dork did not mean that everyone else was right there with him.
The fountain looked almost sad in the winter. It was too cold to count on a reliable stream of water and so they shut it off during the cold months and let it fill up with snow and water. The previous snow in it had melted, leaving a stagnant and unattractive puddle in its wake. He preferred it in the warmer months when it bubbled cheerfully as people sat on the nearby bench, talked and laughed with one another. He would have moved on if not for his phone buzzing in his pocket, alerting him to the fact that he had a text. He wondered for a moment why the ringer had not gone off, then realised that he'd probably shut it off when he was at work and forgot to turn it back on again. Whoops, my bad. Oh well, at least he could feel it humming persistently against his thigh. He pulled it out and started to text his friend in reply, declining an offer to go to a party because he wasn't in the mood for that kind of crazy drinking tonight. It took a while to get the text out considering he was determined about using perfect grammar and punctuation with his messages and just as he hit send, something light and papery collided with his foot. He wouldn't have noticed if not for the fact that he heard the sound it made. The Fire graduate bent down to pick it up, then glanced into the face of the person who'd been pursuing it.
It took only a brief moment for recognition to hit. "Gabriella, hello." The fact that she'd been a Water student had turned him off her presence at first but the Fire graduate had at last gotten used to the fact that they were his allies now and that there was nothing he could do about it. Nothing he really wanted to do. They weren't half bad once you got past the grudges held for all the pranks they'd pulled. Glancing at the pamphlet, his lips twitched. "UBC, huh? Nice choice. Are you going to medical school there?" Or, well, hoping to, he supposed. Joshua was very smart and ambitious so he figured he'd be able to get into the top medical schools if he wanted to. Harvard in the United States, McGill in Canada. Unfortunately, Josh wasn't willing to leave his family for that length of time. He wasn't just going to medical school for four years, he was going for eight. The journey of a physician-scientist was one hell of a long one. He refused to leave Nell for a near-decade. "Aren't you just going into junior year?" he realised, frowning in puzzlement. "Thinking ahead or something?" Couldn't argue with that. Joshua was definitely a person who planned for the future. He didn't realise her mother had pushed her into looking. "I'm aiming for the school in the Hollow. It's not the best but it's decent and I don't think I could leave this place." His lips twitched. Too many memories, too much attachment to depart.

A smile formed on her face. She wasn't sure why but maybe she's just happy to see someone who had the same career goal in life. "Hi, Josh." The girl replied hugging tightly to her other brochures of different universities that she can go to. She sure needs some advice right now. Gabriella is quite indecisive, so she needs someone who has the expertise to help her decide which one is best for her. Maybe Josh can be the closest person she can ask for now. The school is closed and all the counselors are on vacation. She can't ask them. She doesn't even have their numbers, which she should have asked ever since she became a college freshmen. Now she won't have to wait until the school year started to ask a counselor. Now she has a chance to ask someone who has been looking into it for a while now. Gabi is sure that Josh has done his research before settling on a school that he has in mind.
"Yup, I'm thinking about it." Gabi replied as she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. She should have thought to bring a hair tie if she knew it was going to be so windy today. Gabi continued to make sure that her other pamphlets wouldn't fly away. She managed to grab these before school ended and she does not intend to loose any of them. All of the universities she chose has great potential to help her learn, but the one that stood out the most was University of British Columbia. It's not too far from home, and she can drive back home if she wants to. Hopefully her mom will be fully behind her choice. She was the one that pressured her into looking for a good graduate school or program that's not too far from home. Gabi should have just taken the pamphlets of universities that were close to her house, but she just grabbed whichever one she knew had a graduate program. She was in a rush that day. She didn't really have time to sort out which was which. The girl smiled wearily, "Yeah, my mom wants me to plan ahead, instead of walking around aimlessly for the rest of my undergraduate career." Gabi replied, it's true that a lot of people her age tend to do that. Even her friends were aimlessly walking through their undergraduate career.
Maybe she should stop hanging out with them. They can be a bad influence on her, especially being a water element and all. She can't help but be social, it's her nature to be that way. It's like she was made to go out and meet random people and them her friends. She can seem shy sometimes but that's only when she's really exhausted. "Oh, I might consider that one, because my mom doesn't want me to be too far away from home." The girl starts looking through her pamphlets, trying to find that school. "What's the name of the school?" Gabriella asked Josh, hoping he won't mind her going to that school and be fellow classmates again. But she is still aiming for UBC. That is one of her top choices and she will try her best to keep her grad point average up for that school. But then again she does have high standards for her schools, especially when it is for her graduate career. She wants to go to one of the best that is within British Columbia. Gabriella doesn't have the heart to leave British Columbia. It's been her home her whole life.

Joshua had once had much bigger dreams for himself in terms of medical school, back when he hadn't been too concerned about leaving Annabel and his parents behind for a few years. They'd grown up with him and he'd keep in touch of course so he'd figured that it wouldn't be too bad to study abroad. Unfortunately, he'd been unable to predict that he'd meet Nell and that she'd become such an important presence in his life. He wasn't going to ask her to pack up and move to America or Quebec to pursue his medical career and so he had to make some compromises. Nell or school? His choice had not been a difficult one. "It's definitely a pretty good pick," he said with a thoughtful frown. "I haven't heard anything bad about it." It was often labelled as a party school but that was the choice of the students, not the administration. If the students chose to focus on their medical career rather than getting drunk every night then they'd probably do just fine. Joshua had been to quite a few parties and experimented with alcohol in his teenage years to a rather severe extent but he'd decided to straighten up his act and move on with his life, so he had. It was the choice of an individual that affected their path in life and no one else. Others might be involved but they were never the most important part of a decision.
It was ironic that Joshua's parents were barely involved in the fact that Josh was so serious about his education. A lot of parents tried to push their kids into being doctors, lawyers, nurses, and other high-paying types so that they could see their children to success. Donovan and Patricia, despite being very upstanding members of society themselves, had never tried to force anything onto their son. He'd pursued success and ambition of his own accord and perhaps that was why he was so relaxed about it all. This was what he wanted and so he wasn't worried about whether or not it was the right choice. If he felt it was, then it was. "Ah, parents," he said, sounding mildly amused. He didn't offer any information about his own, not really seeing the need. "I guess it is good to have some idea, though, especially since there's deadlines for applications and all. It's not good to make last minute decisions." Joshua was never the type to jump headlong into a decision without first weighing his options carefully. He liked to make decisions that were based on logic and reason and such a thing couldn't happen if he didn't consider every possible turn in the path. It meant he had to take a while to decide things but it also meant he ended on a confident note. That suited him.
He blinked in surprise. She hadn't heard of it? Was she from Maple Hollow or somewhere else? He thought about asking but didn't. Then again, she might not be as obsessed with schools as Joshua was. It could be entirely plausible that someone didn't know the names of most of the places in town like he did. He was really insane with his dedication at times. Instead of questioning her, he replied, "The University of Maple Hollow. No points for creativity, eh?" They had a college branch too and some preferred to go to the college and then later the sister university but of course Joshua was a special case. He'd been able to attend the Academy for undergraduate school. Sometimes he wondered what life would be like if they had a graduate school as well but they did not and so there was no use pursuing the thought for long. "I was going to go to Harvard," he said easily, as if it wasn't a big deal at all that he'd been thinking about the Ivy League schools in another country, "but I decided that eight years abroad probably isn't the best choice." It would be different if he didn't have a fiancée but he did and he knew that it changed things. His loyalty to Nell won out over his desire to boast Ivy League credentials. He was still thinking about applying just to see if they'd accept him. For his own entertainment and all. But maybe that was unfair. "So UMH it is for me." Hopefully. If he got in.

The Water elemental looked at all the stuff that she has in her arms. It's crazy how many she took. And she would usually look at these somewhere else, but she decided to choose the park today for fresh air. But maybe it was a bad idea because another gust of wind blew their way. Her hair flew, as she held on to her bountiful amount of brochures. Gabriella sure needed to learn about her schools. She did think about graduate schools towards the end of her sophomore year, but she didn't too much about it, considering the fact that she had time. But now it seems like time is ticking away, and will not wait for her to decide which one is best for her. She's lucky that her mother is actually pushing her to look into some good graduate schools. If not, she will be lost like a mouse in a maze looking for it's treat when it solves it. Once the wind died down the girl fixed her hair and tucked it behind her ears. Knowing well enough that the wind might play with her hair again.
Gabriella smiled when she heard Josh say that University of British Columbia was a good pick. "Yeah well, you never know what happens on the campus unless you're actually there, right?" Gabi replies with a small smile. It's true, no one really knows what goes on at a campus unless they lived there. She sure did not hear any bad remarks about the Academy until she went and saw the drama between the elements. She did not expect it, but then again she wasn't surprised, either. Teenagers will be teenagers. Gabi never really hated anyone until she met Altair. She was just too much for Gabriella to handle. Her anger just clouds her vision whenever she sees that blonde bleach haired girl walking around campus. But she never attacks unless she does first. But it's strange how Josh is so different from her. Maybe it's because of age difference? Gabi can't really put her finger on it. "Yeah, parents. But I know that my mom loves me and she wants what's best for me." Gabi replied with a faint smile. She loves her mom, and wants to help take care of the house with her. Especially with her brother running around as a reporter.
Gabi nodded at Josh's comment about being last minute. Gabriella did not like to procrastinate, no matter how hard she tried. She would get a bit antsy when something is due soon and she's not even halfway finished with the assignment. If she gets antsy about assignments Gabi can't imagine how she'll feel when deadlines are creeping up on her. She would probably stress over it as if finals are coming up. Gabi chuckled when Josh told her the name of the University he was going to. "Yup, no points at all." She said with a smile. Well it was the same for the University of British Columbia. The founders did not bother to come up with a more creative name for the University.
When Gabriella found the brochure for Maple Hollow University, she noticed that it has potential also, but not as much as University of British Columbia. Maybe she should go to Maple Hollow since her home town isn't too far from here. "This school looks promising." The girl says reading what the brochure had printed on it. The school had a lot of programs she was thinking that her graduate school should have. She turned her attention back to Josh when he mentioned he was thinking about Harvard before settling on Maple Hollow University. "Wow you were aiming for an Ivy League?" The girl said thinking about how hard it must be to get into that school. "Yeah, that does seem kind of long. I would never do that." The girl replied agreeing with Josh. Being away from British Columbia for eight years is way too long for her.

Joshua nodded. "That's true." A lot of schools had bad reputations that were well-earned but the students who attended the school and gave it the reputation it did could not speak for the intelligence of the faculty. Then again, he supposed it worked in another direction as well—if the school was really that good, students who spent most of their time slacking and partying would not be able to get in. He hadn't heard anything bad about the Hollow's university and its medical school actually attracted quite a few people to the small city. His father had told him the reason the hospital was so respected was the fact that it cooperated with the school nearby. "Even if the people aren't that great, I guess if you're smart enough any school could be a good choice." If you were focused and dedicated enough on what you wanted to learn you could surely ignore the other people around you and concentrate on your own education, right? Josh had managed to do that for most of his life. He hadn't been the best kid when it came to getting into scraps and fights on the school yard (ah, temper problems) but he'd been very intelligent and a hard worker so he'd kept his grades up consistently. Really, his smarts had probably saved the Academy from kicking him out. Schools didn't like to waste people with potential if they thought they could avoid it.
His lips twitched. Most people were close to their parents and even if they fought daily, they'd always have something good to say about them in the end. Family loyalties went a long way and chances were, most parents did want what was best for their kids at the end of the day. Despite all the issues that Joshua'd had with Donovan in the past, he'd praise his father via conversation if anyone asked after him. He was loyal. "I don't doubt it." It didn't concern him that his family weren't pushy about him and his education. They didn't need to be and so their lack of persistent involvement was not a shock. They did support him and Donovan's eyes had glowed with pride when Joshua had mentioned that he'd have gone to Harvard if not for Nell. "You'd have made it, too, I bet," was what his father had said. It had made him feel good about himself. He really was following in his father's footsteps. Joshua wanted to become more than just a doctor, though. He didn't have the eye for business that the older man had and so he didn't want to own a hospital, he wanted to become a big name in medical research and development. It was a dream.
There was something like pride in his gray eyes when he dipped his head. "Yeah, I was. I could have made it if I was willing to go that far from home." There was no doubt in his voice because Josh never tended to doubt himself. He was a confident, self-assured person. He knew what he wanted from life and he was not willing to sit idly by. He would stand up and take it. Of course, that didn't guarantee acceptance into Harvard but he didn't consider this. No, Josh figured that he was intelligent and driven and that was all he needed. If there's a will, there's a way. There was a lot of will. "UMH isn't so bad, though. It's no Harvard or McGill but you don't need Ivy League or reputation to be a good doctor." He shrugged. Unfortunately, those sorts of schools gave you one thing that Joshua did want—credibility. He was sure Harvard had produced some shitty doctors and small-time universities had produced brilliant ones but that didn't change what society thought. When they heard Harvard-educated they generally thought of a very smart, responsible person. He'd wanted the notable name of the school more than anything else. Still, he was willing to sacrifice it for Nell's sakes. Better married and educated in eight years than graduating from Harvard and ending up alone in life.
He chuckled wryly when she mentioned that she'd never do what he'd almost wanted to. "Eh, it'll be eight years no matter where I go. Best it's close to home." He was in this for the long ride. No backing down, no backing out. Joshua was not worried in the least about the incredibly long time remaining between now and the day he'd finally be licensed to practice medicine. One day was better than never. "I'm going to become a physician-scientist so I've got to train for my masters and doctorate at the same time." It was possible to do them both separately but that meant it would take even longer. The program he was going into was aimed toward physician-scientists, specially trained doctors who spent most of their time in laboratories.

Gabriella nodded agreeing with Josh's statement. She didn't have to go to University of Birtish Columbia. But it is one of her top choices because it's not too far from home and she can drive there and back home. She didn't need to depend on room and board. So it will cost her mother less. But the only thing that's expensive are her classes, and to add on the gas that she needs to travel the distance between home and school. She can probably do well at Maple Hollow Univeristy but she's not sure if she can see herself going there. She can see herself going to UBC but not MHU. Her mother did say to picture herself at a school. If she can see herself at a certain campus then yeah, that school should be one of the top choices. She is thinking about going abroad, but just on the border. Like Washington state, but she doesn't want her mother to pay for room and board again. And the fact that she is an international student, her classes wil cost more than what a resdie would pay. Thinking about all the prices and such does give Gabi a headache. Sometimes Gabi wished that higher education was cheaper than it is now.
The girl smiled as Josh mentioned that he didn't doubt her mother's love her for. Yeah a mother's love is one of the strongest kinds of love right? Gabriella has no idea about Josh's family life or past at all. And she's not sure if she wants to go into that. The two aren't close, but they are somewhat like friends. Gabriella isn't sure on how to define their relationship. If anyone asked, she wouldn't know how to answer that person. Gabi does feel like Josh is a friend. He and Nell are engaged after all. Maybe she can look past the fact that Josh is a fire elemental and can probably start trusting him a bit more. Gabi is usually a trusting person, but she usually gives it out to people she knows that are her allies for sure. She did already tell, well more like showed Josh (accidentally) where she's going to go after she graduates from the academy.
"Yeah I'm sure you would have." Gabi replied to Josh. Josh knows his stuff. He knows more about the different schools that have a graduate program while she's still kind of lost in a maze of different schools. She's not sure about his grades but he seems like one of those students who actually takes time to study the material and actually learn something. And he's probably really good with his sciences and all that. It takes Gabi a while to get something. She has to do one problem over and over again in order to get it. Learning is a process but the process isn't always fun. "Well like you said it doesn't matter which school, it all depends on how well the student does." Gabriella said replying to Josh's comment about UMH and comparing it to Harvard and McGill. Sure UMH isn't like Harvard or McGill but UMH is still a University.
"Wow that's tough work." Gabi said when Josh mentioned that he had to train for both his masters and doctorate at the same time. That is a lot of work to do in eight years. Gabriella isn't sure that she can do that. She's only aiming to be a physician assistant. She just wants to work under a pediatrician and help that pediatrician with whatever she can do. All she needs is about another four years of graduate school and leave with a masters under her name. "But I'm sure that you can pull through."

An amused and satisfied glint flashed in his gray eyes when Gabriella spoke, using his earlier words against him (though in a positive way). He hadn't realised when he was remarking on Harvard and McGill that he was technically doing what a lot of people did with party schools—judging by reputation. "Ah, I see what you did there." His gaze shone with an appreciation of the cleverness. He always liked it when people could turn a situation around in good favour. "Nice one." If he thought about it that way he could definitely see himself going to the University of Maple Hollow and coming out to be a great doctor. "Harvard would be really competitive too, I think. I mean, all medical schools are tough work, but I think if you're smart enough to get into Harvard you're probably really ambitious and all." That was how he was at least. Going off his own feelings and experiences, Joshua assumed that Harvard would be a really hard school to be the 'best' in. Did he think he could do it? Of course he did, because Joshua was a confident person who was very self-assured and certain of himself. But not everyone was like him and in a way he could appreciate that. He often overlooked the fact that not everyone saw the world like he did but there were rare moments of clarity where he appreciated the fact that he was not a carbon copy of anyone else. He liked being different.
He nodded briefly in acknowledgement of the difficulty. "Definitely won't be easy. It's kind of reassuring in a way, though." He paused for a moment before realising that he might not be making sense. A lot of people wouldn't immediately get the point he was trying to make and so he elaborated with, "It shouldn't be easy to train for life and death, y'know?" He didn't simply want to be an assistant or a small time doctor who just dealt with the sniffles and referred people to specialists on some occasions. No, Joshua wanted to be a doctor who made medical breakthroughs, who dealt with the tough cases, who really made a mark on the world. He knew that people didn't become brilliant and knowledgeable doctors overnight and he figured it would be a bit nerve-wracking if people you trusted with your life only had a couple years of schooling and no degree. He cracked a brief smile when she said she was sure he'd made it. "Nice to know people have faith in me," he chuckled. He was partially joking because she didn't know him well and all but at the same time he was oddly flattered. It was nice when people seemed to think you'd be good at something. He wanted to be good at his future career, after all.
Another gust of wind blasted his cheeks with the cold and Joshua made a brief face, his displeasure quite evident. He didn't like the cold or the snow. The cold vanished quickly as his natural body heat countered it but the wind continued and he didn't like that. "We should walk, fend off the cold," he suggested. "I'd do something about it but it'd look pretty strange if I melted the snow." He could try and use his heat to keep them warm and all that but heat tended to spread and as it was not visible like actual fire was, it was much harder to quickly disperse. It would turn the snow to slush or water and that would look more than just a little suspicious to people walking by. Slush in the middle of nowhere? Mortals naturally tried to find logical explanations and they probably wouldn't realise he was the cause of it but he didn't want to take risks. He started to walk slowly, wondering if she'd tag along with him, and asked curiously, "Hey, what sort of thing do you want to do with your degree, by the way? I don't think you said." He used to be really uncomfortable with prying but since this had to do with what both of them wanted from their lives he figured the common ground would be helpful for conversation. He didn't want an awkward silence or anything. "Unless you're not sure," he said, frowning thoughtfully for a brief moment before his expression cleared. "That's cool too, 'course, I'm just curious." He was a pretty curious person, after all.
