Joshua and his friend left the lecture hall together, muscles stiff and sore after sitting still for hours and listening to a spiel on biophysics. It had been rather interesting and he'd taken in the majority of it with his eagerness to learn and his good memory but he was still glad to be able to stand. He paused in the hall once they were enough out of the way that they wouldn't get in anyone's way and Josh stretched, cracking his shoulders and neck. "That was a long one, eh?" His friend nodded his agreement and they continued off down the hall, chatting amiably about their courses and what they'd been up to over the summer. Joshua was always glad when he found someone else with his same aspiration to be a doctor, though Kennedy was looking into a career as a pediatrician and Josh was more interested in helping whomever he could on his path. Their conversation carried them to a fork in the hall where Joshua turned in the opposite direction to his friend, Josh having a free period and Kennedy taking another class right after the lecture. "See you later." He lifted his hand in a lazy half-wave and turned his attention down the hall. There were a lot of people milling about these main hallways thanks to the fact that class had ended and he found it rather congested and hard to navigate sometimes. Castle halls were huge but they were not limitless in space.
Though he was not claustrophobic like his fiancée, Nell, Joshua did not like crowds pressing in all around him. It suggested danger if something bad were to happen, especially if you were in the thick of the group with people all around you. He'd heard of trampling deaths during major events when there was a fire and he really didn't like to entertain the idea of being suffocated by his fellow students. It was not a fear for Joshua, merely a discomfort, but he still made a note to nip down the shortcuts if he could. Having attended the Academy since the ninth grade, a good seven years now, Josh knew most of the hallways like the back of his hand. There were areas of the school he'd only been to once when he had an urge to explore but those were the areas where he'd never had classes and where nothing important like bathrooms, lecture halls or the mess hall were located. Josh stuck close to the left side of the hall as he walked, hating the middle of the hallway where anyone impatient might take to giving someone a good shove (and, if they tried it to Josh, therefore starting a fight). It cleared up a bit near one of the hallway mouths and he turned down that one, glad to be out of the throng. It was much easier to walk here, especially with many people disappearing inside their respective classrooms, so Josh slowed his pace to an easier, relaxed one, in no real hurry to get anywhere.
He decided that the mess hall might be a good place to go, his throat a little parched and his stomach rumbling due to the fact he hadn't eaten breakfast that morning. He could practically hear Nell now if she knew he'd neglected to eat (again). The thought made him smile and he turned another corner, into a hallway that was quite literally empty... save for a strange array of cups on the floor. Joshua was not quite sure what to make of it at first, blinking at them curiously. They only filled half the hall but it was enough to impede his progress and he wondered what the hell was going on. Upon strolling closer to the nearest row of closely-spaced cups, Josh noted that they were filled with water. Stepping back, he said clearly and coolly, "If you're nearby, whoever set this up, I'd suggest you come out of hiding." He didn't know if they were, merely taking a shot in the dark. "I happen to be a Fire elemental and I can ruin your hard work in a couple of seconds if you'd like." How would the person feel if the water in those cups evaporated into steam? Then it would be a simple matter of kicking them aside and continuing on his way. Not that he really cared about getting where he was going, and if Josh were to run into a friend he may well be persuaded to stick around.

he teased the older boy, ”You know, what with the fact that you're kind of a traitor and all.” Personally Grey didn't see what the big deal was for the rest of the fire elementals, and indeed with any element who had their 'traitors.' From a biological standpoint, love was the result of a neural state – just like with any emotion – not something you could really control; and besides, who were you to say who somebody could or couldn't be friends with? Of course, this outlook might have had something to do with the fact that Grey was a wind elemental, which was pretty much the eternally neutral element. Glancing over at his half-done set up he shook his head. ”You know, I totally didn't spend quite a while setting this up, by all means go and mess it all up!” he started sarcastically, but in such a fashion that it was made obvious that he was being friendly, ”Must you ruin everything Josh?” To anyone looking on who didn't know Grey, one might think that he was annoyed with the fire elemental, but the exact opposite was true. Grey actually liked the so-called 'traitor.' They both had an interest in science – although Grey wasn't in university for it and probably wouldn't be in the future. Not as a major at least, he might take either Biology or Chemistry as a minor. He had really yet to decide, but he did know that he would probably major in something like economy or the like. Something to do with business. And, of course, running into Josh meant that he had something to do – the prank really being just a way to stave off boredom and avoid the outside, although he still wouldn't mind seeing something come out of it. Grey glanced over at the half-finished set up and shrugged. ”You kind of caught me by surprise actually,” he admitted, shooting Josh a grin, ”I'm only half finished. I have enough water-filled cups to pretty much fill this hallway.”[/ul][/ul][/ul]

A mild flash of anger rushed through him when Grey spoke those teasing words. It did not matter that it was clearly in jest, Joshua still often tensed when slurs against his treachery were made or anyone suggested that he was any less of a Fire elemental because of what he had done. The brief irritation registered in his expression, lips tugging downward into the start of a scowl before he caught himself and assumed a more neutral appearance. "It isn't an alliance that makes an elemental what he is." He knew he was being slightly irrational. Joshua acknowledged this in his own mind but did not bother apologising for his sharp behaviour, never the type to admit that he was in the wrong if he could help it. Though he had betrayed his element, he still possessed the personality of a Fire. Stubborn, proud, quick to anger. Maturity had calmed the violence of his temper but it had not eased it to the point of vanishing. "You Winds are so ignorant sometimes." Accompanied by a subtle twitch of his lips—upward, this time, the beginnings of a smirk—it was his way of diffusing any tension his anger might have created. He considered Grey to be a friend and he tried not to let his temper get in the way of friendships.
Tried. It didn't always work out that way.
Despite his amusement as Gregory joked with him, Joshua prided himself in his ability to keep a perfectly straight face. His composure was near-perfect, thanks in part to the fact that he was a generally serious person. "Why, yes. I constantly endeavour to ruin your life. You should be flattered that I pay such close attention to your schemes." He kept his voice light but almost snide, as if he thought of himself as somehow superior to the Wind. He did not, only playing along with the joke. He had been serious about his plan to turn the water into steam until he realised this prank was a result of a friend's hard work. He might have done a few cruel things for the sake of himself but he did try to treat his friends with respect. The selfishness that was common in Fire elementals was not one of his strongest traits, nor did he have arrogance as prominent as some. No elemental was the spitting personality image of another, no matter whether they shared similar traits or not. Especially not with the Winds, and he often wondered what it was like to be one.
He glanced around at the intruding set-up when Grey spoke of it, seeing it in a new light when he wasn't as annoyed by the way it hindered his journey to the mess hall. That it had been set up by a friend made all the difference. "It's a very effective road block," he said somewhat dryly. "I was on my way to the mess hall but I suppose my short cuts for the day are off limits." The light in his gray eyes was the only hint that he wasn't as irked as he sounded. It was a very subtle cue and people often missed out on things like this when it came to Josh. Many arguments with him started with misunderstandings. His temper then flared up and everything crashed and burned (sometimes literally) within seconds. "Do you need help setting up? Seems like a pretty lengthy job." The mess hall could wait, really. He was in no hurry to get where he was going and the company of a friend seemed more appealing than the company of food at the current point in time.

he replied, his tone almost mocking near the end, as though he was hiding something, “After all, no one suspects the ignorant of anything~” Grey figured that it was a good thing that he wasn't a fire. Sometimes he wondered how the fires got along at all, and why they weren't always at each other's throats. After all, fires were known for their tempers, and although he had to admit that there was obviously a sense of camaraderie among them, sometimes it seemed a wonder to Grey that they weren't always angry at each other. Of course, he was looking at it from the point of view of a wind, and the winds didn't have as much unity among them as the other elements did. “Well if so, you haven't been doing all that great a job.” Grey joked back, although with him, it actually sounded like a joke, unlike with Joshua, where he sounded perfectly serious. Of course, he obviously wasn't, because if he was, then the older fire type would have done something to mess up Grey's half-set-up prank already. Of course, if Grey hadn't stepped out, he probably would have done so anyways, but that would have been more because he hadn't known who had set it, and it was obviously in his way. But now he wasn't, so that was good. It would be a pity for all his hard work to be wasted with only a mediocre reaction to it. Grey chuckled at Joshua's compliment of his prank. “Indeed it is. Honestly, I'm hoping someone will trip over it or something. You know, an actual reaction.” he paused for a moment, and then continued, “I would have done something out in the gardens, but it's way to hot outside to bother.” He had noticed that Josh sounded irked, but had simply waved it off. People were generally irked at him for his pranks, so he was used to it. Besides, Josh was a friend, so it was likely that he was only joking; and even if he wasn't, he would probably get over it. Grey's friends were pretty familiar with his love of pranks – something he had gotten from his grandmother, a water – so it wasn't as though they could really say they expected different. When Josh offered to help, Grey nodded. “Nooo, I'm perfectly fine doing it all on my own.” he responded sarcastically, “It would be appreciated though.” he finished with a smile. He walked over to the alcove where he had hidden the rest of the supplies and carefully pulled out a box. “I'm surprised you're not outside in the heat like everyone else.” he commented absentmindedly as he did so, although the look on his face as he glanced out the window made it obvious that he wouldn't even harbor the thought of going outside. Joshua arched an eyebrow but made no comment. It was clear to him that Gregory was kidding, though. He did have a bit of a point had he said it in a more serious manner but as it was in jest the Fire graduate merely accepted it in stride. Winds aren't anything to be concerned about. He did not voice the comment out loud. He was not afraid to share his opinions but those that might offend his friends were kept to himself at times. He did not seek fights. Sometimes they happened thanks to his sharp tongue and bad temper but he did not willingly start them. "What a shame to know my life's dream has been crushed." All those hours spent trying to ruin Gregory's life gone to waste. The horror, the tragedy. He suppressed his smirk. He wondered sometimes about the people who really did devote their time to terrorizing others. What was the point? You never got yourself anywhere in the end. Most of Joshua's drive was ambition-based and so the thought of a fruitless goal disturbed him.
"You're lucky I wasn't the one to trip over it. I fear I'd have killed you." He blinked at the array of cups and decided that he definitely would not have been very happy if he'd tripped over them—or worse, into them. The thought of being soaked with water was not a pleasant one. "It'd be a quick fix, mind. For me, not you." Grey would end up dead and that was not so easily reversed. Joshua could wave his hand and dry himself off in a jiffy. He liked the ability to dry off or warm up almost instantly. It was one he'd not really had until college; he could create flames in high school and allow their heat to warm him slowly but using the heat itself was much more convenient, and not nearly as suspicious when around mortals. As long as he didn't melt paths through the snow in winter, heat was something he could use under their noses if he was careful. He also could have used it to ruin the entire set-up spread out before him but Gregory was lucky his self-control was not so lacking.
Thinking on the other thing his friend had added, Joshua frowned. "Hmm. Don't think there is such a thing as 'too hot' for me." He said it matter-of-factly, shrugging and allowing his expression to return to its neutral state. He loved the heat but he was not that shocked that Grey did not share in his affections, seeing as they hailed from different elements. Can't say I enjoy being blown about in a windstorm. He did not mind the wind and the howling sound was nice when safely inside and not in any danger but being out in it was a different story. Not for them, he supposed. Everyone felt a natural pull toward their element, whether they wanted to or not. "The gardens are shady but I suppose you're right, shade doesn't help much on a day as hot as this one." The heat was 'unbearable' according to a few of his friends, all non-Fire elementals of course. What little of the day he'd been out in had felt lovely. "If you look at it that way, your victim should thank you for the cold wake-up call. Though I'm guessing the water's not that cold any more."
Joshua's lips twitched at the sarcasm. He nodded, deciding that he would commit himself to helping his friend finish the cup-filled hallway. It might be worth it if only to see someone get caught in the trap. "I hope it's a Fire elemental." He didn't sound particularly spiteful but he could admit to himself that he felt it. As long as it's not Lark or Harley. He figured it would be a little awkward if one of his friends walked into the cups and ended up fuming. "It's hot nearly every day in August. I don't shrivel up when I'm not out in the sunlight, contrary to popular belief." His tone was as calm and blasé as usual as he helped Gregory with the prank. "You know, roping a Water elemental into this might have been a good idea. Just a thought." He smirked over at the Wind.

but managed to stop himself before saying anything. Saying anything along those lines ran the possibility of brining up questions Grey didn't want to have asked, or to have to answer. Even had he said it in a joking manner, as though he were poking fun at himself, it wouldn't have sat well. That and it probably wouldn't be 'tactful.' Stupid etiquette lessons. Of course, Joshua wasn't exactly the type to pry, the guy doubtless kept plenty of his own thought and experiences to himself, but it wasn't something Grey wanted to risk. He tried to keep the details of his life as secretive as possible; it was his life after all, he had the right to do so. Of course, his accent was hard to hide, anyone who spoke to him would quickly figure out that he was foreign, although not everybody pinpointed the exact country right away. Of course, once people realized that he was from Russia, they usually would ask him questions about the country, or about the famous places in it, or really anything they wanted to know or clarify. Grey was usually happy to oblige, after all, people were naturally curious about what they didn't know, and didn't people usually want to hear it from someone instead of simply reading about it? It was when they started asking about his personal life that he stopped being specific and began giving vague answers. Private details of one's life were not something Grey would give to someone he didn't trust completely. He didn't let these thoughts show on his face however, answering instead with a: ”Well I'm sorry to disappoint then,”Grey shrugged in response to the almost warning from the graduate student. He was plenty aware that it was a lot more dangerous to be a 'prankster' in a school full of people with control over the elements, especially considering the fact that not everybody could control their element well. Grey knew his father blamed diluted bloodlines on that fact, but Grey wasn't really sure on that matter. Sure the 'pure-bloods' or close to it were usually pretty good at controlling their powers, but everyone was different, there were some people with a very diluted bloodline that were amazing with their powers. Grey did however agree with his father that they had a responsibility to keep their race going and not let it die out, but at the same time, biology had taught him that being stuck with the same gene pool was not necessarily a good thing, because then the negative traits could become more common. Take the royal families of Europe for example. A lot of them had Haemophilia due to inbreeding. ”You fires and your anger issues.” he joked with a shake of his head. Of course, it wasn't as though Winds couldn't have anger issues as well, as they were like a mixing pot of all sorts of personalities. 967BB6”Well then, I guess that's what I get for growing up in a city where the highest monthly average is about 24 degrees Celsius.” Grey responded with a grimace. He was uncomfortable with the heat, it felt stifling, and the humidity that usually accompanied it didn't help. Hot and humid, ugh. Of course, it did make sense for Josh to be fine with the heat, he was, after all, a fire elemental, being able to deal with the heat kind of came as part of the package. He listened with a nod to Josh's comment about his other prank idea. ”Yeah, but that requires me to go outside in order to set it up.” he pointed out, ”I'd rather avoid outside at all costs.” He paused for a moment, and then continued, ”Besides, it's not really fun if they enjoy it.”Grey nodded to Josh's almost spiteful comment, at least, that was how it sounded. ”Well of course!” he replied, ”It wouldn't be any fun if a Water walked into it, it probably wouldn't bother them in the slightest. That and they would probably just turn it against us.” This sort of prank was almost designed for a Fire elemental as the victim. And now Grey had a graduate student with him who could help him him out if things got nasty; or at least he hoped he would. ”Thanks Tips. I hadn't noticed.” he responded with a roll of his eyes to Josh's comment about the temperature, ”I just stay inside because I enjoy the décor.” For a moment, he was silent as he worked with Josh on finishing setting up the prank. When Josh mentioned having a Water with them. Grey chuckled. ”Yes, because you know, that never occurred to me.” he countered, ”I did have one of them say that they would help, but they never showed, as you can obviously see.” [/ul][/ul][/ul]

Shaking his head, he said, "Jesus! Where did you live, Antarctica?" It was said in sarcastic exasperation and did not demand a serious answer, or even an answer at all. Joshua did not pry into the private lives of other people unless they made it clear they didn't mind being open or else he was really close to them as a friend. Though he appreciated Grey's company and could call him a friend, he was not a close friend of the Winds. He did not have many people he was close to, only a tight inner circle that he could call his own. He was happy with that, liked it better that way. It was easier to devote time to your close friends when you didn't have millions of them. Sometimes he wondered how Nell managed the amount of people she was good friends with. Where did all the time to hang out come from? "I can see why you'd hate the forty-above temperatures here, then." He shrugged, for it had already been stated that their views on the temperature were differing.
In further contrast, he would have preferred to be outside at that moment, soaking up the sun's rays and basking in the heat. He did not bother saying this, having already decided regardless that he would stay indoors and assist his friend. "How pleasant of you." He said this dryly and arched an eyebrow but he knew what Grey meant and did not seriously look down on him for it. Of course pranks weren't as fun if the victims simply waved it off as nothing. That was more of a favour than a prank. Joshua had certainly been a satisfying victim for many Water elementals in the past. He absolutely loathed being tricked and duped into things. If he'd managed to fall into Gregory's trap he would be in a lot less of a calm, neutral mood than he was now. "I can certainly do without being drenched. If any Waters come along we should send them in the other direction." He was terrified of deep water, of drowning. Water elementals did not scare him but he didn't want to get soaked anyway. He recalled Jacob, the way the other boy had nearly drowned him with his powers, and could Josh really be blamed for how long it took him to start trusting the Waters?
On mention of decor, Joshua took a look around the hall. Castle walls, torch brackets, a few wooden doors leading into what were probably disused classrooms, given the lack of activity in this part of the school. "Gotta love those ancient stone walls." He said everything seriously, calmly, almost like he was incapable of joking. Yet he was joking, it was merely Joshua's way of doing so. "So you were ditched? What nice friends you have. What ever would you have done if I hadn't swept in to save the day?" Setting the cups down in the hallway was a rhythmic and repetitive process, almost therapeutic in its consistency. He was careful not to step into the cups and start a domino effect, tried to avoid having any water slosh out of the cups. It was a good thing the castle halls didn't have surveillance. He imagined it would be a pain if they got reported to the administration. Tattle-tales annoyed him, though of course he was a rat in his own right. "So why did you decide to do this, anyway? Just a laugh? Feeling particularly nasty today?" He raised an eyebrow, honestly curious. He knew Grey was a prankster but he did often wonder how they came up with these things.

he replied, looking out the window to the sweltering outside. It was so hot that he could almost see the heat rising off of the roof of the building. He wondered how hot it would have to be to see heat mirages rising from the grass. A mischievous and cheerful grin broke out on Grey's face. “It's my pleasure.” he replied brightly. He knew that not everyone appreciated his love of pranks, and someone like Josh – who was a fire and not really a natural prankster – probably didn't appreciate it in the slightest, especially if he was the victim of it. Of course, you also had to be careful with who you tried to prank sometimes. Grey had seen people take pranks too far. There was a line that if you crossed it, the prank just became cruel. A good rule of thumb was to try to prank someone who would be able to laugh it off with you. Of course, this was often hard, especially with the majority of the fires and thunders. They weren't exactly a 'laugh it off' type of group of people. Generally. There were exceptions, there were always exceptions. Like the rumors that Grey's great-uncle had married a perfectly normal, non-elemental human. Which, if it was true, would be why Grey rarely heard of him. Doing a thing would get him ostracized from the family. Cut off. Hearing Josh's suggestion about the waters, Grey looked up from his work. “Are you kidding?” he asked, sounding incredulous, but not really meaning it, “Ve should be trying to coerce them into joining! A vater vould probably love somezing like zis!” he exclaimed. Josh had just mentioned that it would be a good idea to have a water helping them too! “But you're right zat ve vould have to send them around so zat sey didn't mess eet all up by accident.” he finished with a thoughtful nod. “And zee endless corridors filled vith nothing but dust. Can't forget the lovely charm of abandonment.” Grey added, his tone slightly sarcastic, slightly truthful and admirable. After all, there probably wasn't one student in the school who hadn't gotten lost in the endless maze of hallways at some point. In fact, Grey figured that there were probably university students who still got lost from time to time. Grey knew he did, but it was partly his fault; the place was great to explore when you were bored. Of course, none of the really cool locations he found were any good as prank locations, because they were rarely used. It was more that the place was several times bigger than his ancient family estate (which his family had somehow managed to keep, even through some of the more turbulent times in Russia's history). They were almost done filling out the hallway now. The work certainly went a lot faster with more than one person. And, of course, the conversation helped, after all, you know what they say: 'Time flies when you're having fun.' “You're right! I haven't thanked you yet! Vhat vould I have ever done vithout you! My life vould have been ruined!” Grey teased as he set down his last two cups. Josh was just placing down his final ones too. With a satisfied smile on his face, Grey stepped back to survey his handy work. Their handy work. “I don't know really.” he replied in response to Josh's question, “I vas bored mostly. Zat and I had a lot of time on my hands. Not a good combination. Although zere vas some advance preparation.”Just as Grey finished speaking, there came voices from down the hall. Grey didn't recognize them (voices could sound very similar sometimes), so he had no idea what element they would be from, but he certainly hoped it would be a pair of fires, he would get the best reaction out of them. “Come on. Let's go vatch the fruits of our labour.” he told Josh, motioning towards a hiding place where they could still see all the action. [/ul][/ul][/ul]

Though he had lived in Maple Hollow his entire life, Joshua had never liked the winter, and so he supposed he could understand the similar way in which Gregory had never gotten accustomed to the sweltering heat of summer. Josh would take this heat over the cold any day but he was a Fire elemental and so, of course, he was biased. Heat gave him strength and cold weakened him. Besides, winter was miserable. If not for Christmas he wouldn't like it at all. "Eh, if it sucks, it sucks," he shrugged. That was his way of looking at things. If you disliked something there was a chance that no length of exposure to it was going to change your opinion. Like winter. He supposed if he was into winter sports or even something like sledding that he would be perfectly fine with the winter months. He didn't, though, and so this summer weather was ideal for him. Not so much for his friend. Eh, that was fine. Everyone was different and the two of them were no exception to this rule.
Joshua snorted at Grey's reaction, amused exasperation shining through. It was almost ironic to consider the fact that Joshua had once loathed the Water elementals and all that they stood for. He didn't like being pranked, didn't like people manipulating or tricking him, and so when he'd been on the receiving end of their often cruel jokes he'd had no patience for them. Now, though, Josh was a little more forgiving. When you were allied with the Waters, as it turned out, the pranks they did pull were a lot more tame and a lot easier to forgive. A lot of them avoiding pranking him altogether so that they didn't get on his bad side (it was more out of respect than fear, he assumed, since the graduates especially stood more than just a chance against him) and he appreciated that. "They might, or they might ruin our handiwork. I don't suppose you have an extra stock of water-filled cups, yeah?" He cracked a bit of a smirk. It would have been easier if either of them could wave their hands and refill all of the drained cups should a Water ruin their fun but Josh certainly wasn't in the mood to go carrying them all to the bathroom and filling them there. It'd take way too long. "Glad to see we're of the same opinion." He chuckled, the sound dry but genuine.
The Academy was definitely a fun place to explore when you were in the mood for adventure. Joshua would be under the impression that he was aware of all the twisted corridors and passageways (he'd been attending for six and a half years, after all) but then just when he was getting into his comfort zone, there would be a new one he'd never come across before. It was awesome. His parents' mansion wasn't nearly as big as a castle but it was big enough to get lost in. He'd never get lost but he bet other people were capable of it.
Joshua's eyes glittered when Grey teased him, amused but not bothering to show this with laughter or even a smirk. Joshua was not an overly expressive person and most people got used to it after a while in his company. Certainly if, like Gregory, they stuck around long enough to befriend him. He'd rarely admit it even to himself but he had a silent respect for everyone who stuck it out long enough to be called his friend. He had anger issues and people issues and all-around issues that took some time getting used to. Mostly anger issues. Plus he was quiet when he didn't know a person, less so once he was comfortable in your presence. Not shy, just quiet. "Boredom is never a good combination with anything." Boredom straight up sucked if you asked Joshua, not that anyone had. He grinned, resisting the urge to snicker, when he heard voices. He nodded in response to Grey's suggestion and went to hide out of sight with him, watching the corner expectantly with amused gray eyes.
