WITHIN ME THERE'S A GAPING HOLE it seems i'm last to know, no one or thing can fill this empty space that i've been pacing in Nell focused on hemming a pair of jeans as she sat in the living room of the group home, tongue poking out a bit. The girl she was doing it for sat next to her, chewing her nails. ”Does this look good?” the Earth questioned, and Maya jumped, and when she looked over Nell saw that her eyes were moving back and forth out of her control. ”W-what?” She gestured to the hem right now so that the pale girl would understand and she understood then. ”Yeah, yeah. Thanks. Yeah.” She reached out a hand for the pants, but Nell pulled them away. ”Did you take your meds today?” she questioned with that maternal authority she’d perfected around here. Some of the girls called her their mother in that annoyed way that didn’t have any affection in it. She didn’t mind, as long as she was doing something for these girls. ”Y-yeah.” Nell set the pants down on her lap, bored her eyes into the girl’s. ”I’m counting so you better be telling me the truth.” Maya acquired a look of indignation then, and said quite confidently in her childish way, ”I’m not lying! I did.” Nell sighed and handed her the pants, stood up from the couch and pursed her lips when she heard her knee joints crack. Was she really becoming an old woman so soon?
As she packed up to leave, making small talk in Spanish with Leana, her phone vibrated and it was the exact last person she wanted. “When are you coming over?” Rafael’s text read, and she texted back to inform him that she had been over earlier and she was going out now. His response was one she was absolutely not up for—“I’m coming along. Meet me at the mall.” She clenched her teeth before saying by to Leana and deciding not to go to the mall so she could avoid the boy. He wouldn’t get miffed if she blew this off, right? Not enough to do any serious damage, she hoped. With that small inkling of fear, she decided to suck it up and go to the mall. Daylight was waning and she was thankful for the fact that Maple Hollow was a brightly lit city. ”What took ya?” Raf asked when she came to the mall. ”Roads are snowy,” she lied to him. They were, though, and she was reminded that she didn’t really like snow. But she could deal with it. ”Well, you’re gonna be buying my presents so let’s get moving.” She gave him a deadpan stare. ”What, you have friends?” she asked smartly and he thwacked her upside the head in a gesture that could have been considered playful were he anyone else. ”Gotta get Angie something real nice.” Nell grimaced. He knew how much she detested him, how powerless she was in his path, and the mere name got her bristling.
She had been spreading her shop time out because she had a lot of presents to buy. And now she had to take care of Raf as well, it seemed, but she could suck it up. He was just buying presents. ”What do you think she’d like?” he asked when they passed Victoria’s Secret and she felt sick to her stomach. ”Get her food. Everyone likes food.” That was usually her choice in gifts, actually, but for the holidays she liked it to be special. She was learning about these things now. ”How about Papa?” She already knew what she was getting the man, but told Rafael some kitchen stuff would be good. It passed with more underhanded comments from the boy until she could escape from him, back outside. There was a light snow, and she looked down at the bags in her hands. Instead of going back to her car, she decided to walk to clear her mind a bit. It was full as of late, her brain rattling around in her head. It didn’t take long before she saw a few homeless people gathered around a trashcan bonfire that reminded her of back home. A smile lit her face and she approached it, holding her hands out to the flames burning it. There was strange comfort in this gathering, and she needed it. She didn’t know how long she could last from now on.

( TAGGED ) NELL/STARK ( STATUS ) IN/COMPLETE A day of shopping was something Isabella always looked forward to. She loved getting new clothes, or even a new pair of shoes (her favorite thing to shop for). The only problem, however was shopping for other people. It was always difficult for her to decide what to get someone. The main questions that would be on her mind was 'What would they like' or 'Do they already have this/that,' it could be very frustrating and tiring. But, she couldn't put her Christmas shopping off to the last minute, with the fear that the stores wouldn't carry many choices. Not that the choices they had were easy to pick from, anyway. Isabella didn't want to end up spending her whole day shopping, but with the worries of what her friends would think of their gifts, or how her brother would react - it looked she would be spending a while at the mall.
Normally, she wouldn't have minded, but she hadn't thought to ask if there was something specific that her friends would want, or even her brother for that matter. Though, he would be the hardest to shop for, seeing that he could buy anything he wanted whenever he wanted to. That thought only added fuel to the fire. How was it, that she was expected to buy him something, when he could already have it or get anything without so much as a second thought? Silently she blamed her frustrations on Hiro. After all, he was the hardest to shop for. If she had an inkling of what he wanted or had his eye on lately, she'd know what she could get him, but she didn't ask. Didn't think to, and regretted not doing so. "Never knew shopping could be so aggravating," she mumbled, stopping at nearby bench to rest.
She had been at the Mall for a few good hours, and was thankful that she didn't spend her whole day wondering around. At least she got a few presents. Bastian was possibly the easiest to shop for. He had a love for drawing, so she used that to her advantage and got him a kit she thought he might like. As for her other friends, she wasn't exactly sure what they would even want. Though, she decided to worry about it later - maybe she could weasel some hints out of them the next time she seen them. After visiting a few more stores, she decided that it was time to head home. Her feet hurt, and she had a few things to wrap and hide. It wasn't exactly Christmas and her friends could be nosy sometimes.
Leaving the Mall, she was notice the snow layering the ground and frowned. It was beautiful, there was no denying that, but at the same time; Isabella wished the forecast wasn't right. She hated snow. It was dangerous and cold. Glancing around, she noticed a few people huddle around a fire. It wasn't every day that she witnessed it, and even though she could've easily gone to her car and left - she didn't. "It's cold out, tonight, huh?" She asked, the question aimed at no one in particular. Though, she didn't get closer than a few feet away.
sorry about the wait, and i'm sorry that it sucks. DX i had a bit of block writing it, but posts should get better. <3 |

WITHIN ME THERE'S A GAPING HOLE it seems i'm last to know, no one or thing can fill this empty space that i've been pacing in Nell blew on her fingers, making sure to talk with as many people as would allow her. She understood that not many were friendly, but she liked to hear other people speak. A lot of them griped about the cold, where they were thinking of staying for the night. She let herself wonder what it would be like to be one of them, because there had used to be a good chance she could have ended up like them. She could have gotten so much worse before the trial, when she was a fugitive. Without a family for support, without anyone to know, it was unbearably lonely. It changed with Josh, when he found out what she did. In a twisted way, it was almost a relief to have at least one person know her greatest sin. And now a lot of people knew, they all knew, and now she only wished to cover it all up. She talked even less about herself and her past now, as if to salvage whatever she could from the wreckage. Even her closest friends weren’t privy to her life, and not because she didn’t trust them—because they didn’t need to know.
She had fallen silent for a moment while considering more presents to get, she heard the voice and turned to who owned it. Nell noticed how she stood first, and could almost tell instantly that she was a confident person. It took only a moment for her to say, ”Yeah, really.” She steered her gaze toward the sky, before shaking her head and looking back to the girl. ”I heard it’s supposed to drop even more tonight. Not too much snow, though, I don’t think.” Nell found it hard to completely hate anything, even snow which stamped down her element. It was beautiful in its own right, especially when there was so much of it. As an Earth elemental, she supposed she had an affinity for nature in general. Besides, she was glad that she could at least experience this winter. There had been a time when she could have only watched from the window. Besides, it was certainly better than last winter when she had been avoiding the world, avoiding everything, including the Prozac she should have been taking.
It would have been nice if she’d brought gloves. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the foresight. She didn't let it bother her too much. ”Holiday shopping?” she questioned with a soft smile, her voice blending in with the others talking around them. It was like a static hum of quiet conversation, something soothing and reassuring. She needed that. Her life lately had been filled with stress and worry, not that she let it get to her. She was capable of taking care of herself. That’s what she needed to keep thinking. ”Whatcha get?” She was a curious person, she couldn’t help it, she was invested in other people like sculpterers were invested in their art. She lived for other people, so she needed to invest all her energy in them.
