Nell didn’t like getting in trouble. Not because she viewed herself as a saint, but she always felt immeasurably guilty when she realized she did something wrong. Like when her professor gave her a slip of paper damning her to sit in a classroom for an hour. ”Don’t be late to my class again.” Even though she hated being judgmental, she knew that the harsher treatment was because this was a Thunder professor she was dealing with. Her lateness had been caused by the fact she had to clean up a mess in the chem lab, and her professor left before she could get a pass. Really, she believed this man was looking for a reason to give her detention. He had never really liked her, enjoyed picking on her for the harder questions. She never stated this out loud or thought much of it, not wanting to be the kind of person who blamed their teachers for everything. She humored her friends when they complained because she loved them, but she didn’t want to do that herself. She didn’t whine.
And so she accepted the slip without a word, not planning to skip out like May suggested. ”C’mon, they won’t even care,” she said, snatching the slip from Nell’s hand as they walked down the corridors together, bumping shoulders with other students as they all made their way to their next classes. ”You’ve never gotten a detention before, right. You just sit in class with a halo over your head, they probably won’t think anything of it.” Nell lifted an eyebrow at the halo comment, even though she did like to be on her best behavior for the professors. Some may call it teacher’s pet, she just didn’t want to make it anymore difficult on them when their jobs were probably already stressful as is. Nell took back the slip and said, ”I don’t want to add anything else to my list of deviant acts.” It was ironic, considering that May didn’t even know half of it. Nell couldn’t count up all the crimes she’d ever committed. Also ironic was the fact that May was right—she never did get detention before.
After finishing the day, she shot a text to Josh to tell him that she wasn’t going to be home at the regular time and headed to the hall for her fate. Her stomach twisted in anxiety. A lot of kids probably just accepted it, even if they weren’t the bad types. She didn’t like the feeling. Nell flashed the slip to the teacher in charge, and looked at the seats in the room. There weren’t many kids, two or three. College and I can still get detention, this is something else. She tried to keep complaints out of her thoughts as well, and so simply sat in the back, trying to hide away, and debated on what she could do with her time. In her bag she had her Voltaire, but her homework was done and she needed to return the book to the library soon. Instead, she took out her deck of cards and shuffled, holding it under the desk after a few students turned around to look at the sound of the cards slapping the desk. As quietly as possible, she set up her game of solitaire, thinking of how well it suited her environment.

Chase walked down the hall, his black Jansport bag strewn over his shoulder with phone in hand. He texted Rowena to tell her to forget about meeting him because he wouldn't be able to make it there today. The Fire Leader sighed and flipped his phone shut after the message sent then slipped it back into his pockets. As if I got detention for giving the little bitch a bit of punishment... he thought to himself as he walked. It wasn't even like she didn't deserve it, though from a Water Elementals point of view he was probably just picking on her. Chase scoffed, the sons of bitches were always in the way. More of a goddamn pain than the Earth brats.
Chase reached the detention hall, grabbed the door knob and turned it. He looked at all the faces inside, the usual trouble makers and a few first timers were seated around the room. One in particular caught his eye. It was the little cunt that had got him here in the first place. A smirk popped onto the Fire Elementals face as he looked to make sure it was her, "No. Fucking. Way." He was muttering under his breath as he said this and made his way to a seat close by her. "I guess today wont be all bad," he said as he dropped his bag on top of her game of cards. "Oops, sorry meant to hit your head with that one." Chase smiled at her then dragged his bag off the table, completely ruining the game as he sat. "SO what's a worthless pansy like you, doing a place like this? Don't they know you poor Earth brats are fragile and might get broken in here?" As if he had ran into the little bitch here of all places, and while he couldn't beat the crap out of her he could sure as hell make her feel like shit. Well he didn't need to beat the crap out of her, he'd burnt her bad enough last time. "You know, I think that makeover did wonders for you, did Josh like it? I know I did."

Nell blinked when she saw the bag dropped onto her desk, not jumping, simply moving her eyes to the offender. Oh, lucky day. Her gaze was blank, she wasn't going to act like she was afraid of him because she wasn't. No, she just really, really didn't like him. And he should be honored, making the list of people she didn't like. It was quite exclusive. "Seems your aim is about as good as your insults," she said flatly, gathering the cards back up so she could deal them out again. A normally pleasant and friendly girl, Chase had managed to bring out a different side of her. Not that she was irritated, simply not amused.
She set up another game of solitaire, not bothering to look at him. "It's detention, not the pen," she deadpanned. There was nothing truly dangerous here, it was just a bunch of kids bored out of their minds. And well, Chase now. That was so fun. "And you can get in here for anything, but let me guess why you're here. Oh, that's right, the man brought you down." She wasn't going to tell him why she had come here. For one, she was sure he'd get a kick out of it. For another, she just didn't talk, and especially not to her enemies. And he better stop talking about my element, the cabrón. There were a lot of things she could tolerate, but one thing she couldn't was someone trash talking the people she loved.
He continued talking and she snorted. "Fire elementals can heal wounds inflicted by their element. You know, at the medical wing." She looked at him, lifting her eyebrow. There was still some redness to her cheek, her arms and her chest, but that would go away rather quickly. "If you wanted to inflict real damage, you would have gone fisticuffs." But he wouldn't be able to catch her for that, she wouldn't let him. She knew how physically weak she was compared to him, and that was dangerous. "And of course you liked it. I wonder about you. I mean, boys are mean to girls they like, that's some kindergarten stuff." Or so she'd been informed by her co-worker. She was learning everything secondhand. And if Chase was willing to get petty, she'd get petty right back.

Chase rested an elbow on the table, and rested his chin in his up turned palm. "Oh don't be like that. We've gotten so close these past days." He shot her a mock look of hurt and then smiled. Ah anything she said would just make him hate her more whether it had to do with anything that had already happened or not. It didn't matter, he just didn't like her. Chase took one of her cards off the table and set fire to the corner for just a second then put it out. The corner was completely burnt, but the rest of the card was just blackened from the flames.
"Oh you never know what might happened if we're left unsupervised. You've never been here before have you? Not a lot of Earths end up in here." He gave her a menacing smile before turning to look at the other kids in the room. Most were minding their own business. Other were watching the two. Chase perked up his brows and shot a small stream of flames at them, just to scare them a little. "With good reason too." He said finishing up his earlier statement. He ignored what she said about him being in there, they already both knew why he was here. Her on the other hand, he had no clue.
He shrugged his shoulders, so what if they got healed. He'd just put some more there later. "Oh come on, it was an engagement gift. Don't tell me you didn't like it." He frowned slightly, "Could've at least made the dick wad see it...." Of course he was referring to Josh. He was one of the only persons he could talk shit about and get a rise out of this prissy little bitch. Fisticuffs...with you? That woulda ruined the fun, would've been over too quick. Though if you really want to, we can go right now." Chase had qualms about beating the shit out of her with his bare hands. The she said something that he really didn't expect from her as a comeback. "You know what, you're totally right. I've been in love with you since the day I first saw you." Chase gave Nell a smile, "And this is how I show my love," he put a hand on her thigh and flames sprung to life. Hopefully she wouldn't jerk away too fast, he wanted to at least leave a nice scar.

If he was trying to upset her, he was doing a bad job. Even when he took the card and burnt a corner. She could always get new cards, even though she liked to make things last as long as possible. It wasn't that easy with a Fire elemental like Chase around. "Are you done?" she questioned him, not batting an eyelash. Nell lifted an incredulous eyebrow at his comment about Earths not getting detention. "Every element can get detention, vato. You can get detention for mouthing off or not doing homework. But I guess most of your detentions are because you have too much testosterone to know what to do with it." The only reason she was here was because she was late for class. "Besides, you can't do anything here unless you want another detention, so nice try." She assumed he was gunning for intimidation with that smile, but her feathers were not even a little disturbed.
Nell still gave him her blank stare. Calling Josh a dick wad was not very effective, his insults were really sub-par. "I just might," she said. She was confident in the fact that Josh could kick this guy's ass. But she wouldn't say anything because she didn't want any fighting. "If you want a fight, you shouldn't be messing with me," she told him, and that was true, he should know that. And again with the threats? She looked at the supervisor. It's your ass, she thought. Her gaze was wary when he touched her, ready to jerk away even before the flames. She moved back on reflex, and looked up when the supervisor yelled, "Mr. Rivers, how would you like another detention tomorrow? That sound good?" He lifted his eyebrows as if actually inquiring. Nell almost smirked in success. She looked back to the cards. "Maybe you really don't come here often, else you'd know not to do anything like that." Stupid move on his part, and she looked down at her scorched jeans. She went through clothes like nothing thanks to people like him who enjoyed picking on those who can't fight back.

Chase shrugged his shoulders as he watched her play with her cards. He didn't want to be here, but he might as well make the best of it since he was stuck here. The Fire Elemental rubbed his jaw and looked away from the Earth Elemental beside him, messing with her was about the only fun he could have in this place. Not that she was being as fun as she used to be. Now she was completely...boring. He glanced at her, True every element can get detention, just not usually your type. What did you? Miss class or something?" Of course he wasn't being serious, it would be way too funny. It would suit her too, she wasn't the type to go out and start anything too serious.
Chase chuckled at the thought. "You should," he said in reply to her comment about letting Josh see the burns. If he couldn't get to the bastard himself, why not go after what he cares about most. There's more than one to skin a cat. Chase raised a brow at her statement, "Oh but you're the perfect way to get a fight, see that fiancé of yours isn't just going to come out of the woodwork to fight me. And being as it is, he's not the easiest man to be found when he doesn't want to be found. So what's the best way to get him out? Good question, and I gotta good answer." Chase leaned in close just for the effect, "Go after what he cares about the most." There was a hint of laughter as he whispered in her ear then he leaned back. Whether she told this to Josh or not to keep him from responding to his actions didn't really matter. The man was a Fire deep down, his temper would get the best of him.
When she jerked his leg away and the supervisor started yell Chase scoffed, "Tch." He glared at Nell before turning to look at the supervisor with a slight smile on his face, "You know what it sounds like a great idea, but I got plans for tomorrow how about a rain check?" He really didn't give a fuck what that supervisor had to say really, he was busy at the moment. Chase returned his attention to Nell, looks like he had to stick with verbal abuse for today. "Did I burn your pants, sorry. I'll make it up to you, promise." Next time he'd get the whole damned leg.

Demeanor entirely blase, she flipped over cards and stacked them up. It wasn't just an act, she was terribly unimpressed by his words. And he seemed to think he was very clever. I've seen worse, youngblood, she thought. Step up your game. She'd seen the worse a human can do, she's already been destroyed. There was nothing much he could do to her now, she was already damaged goods. "What, that doesn't impress you? Because you know, that's totally my goal in life." She was usually never one to judge based on immaturity, she knew how she was, but taking sport in getting detention for beating someone up was kind of ridiculous. Didn't get you street cred, it just took up time. And that was part of the reason it bothered her so much. She had things to do, being forced to sit in this room with Chase, the Fire dumbass, for an hour wasn't a very pleasant prospect.
She listened to Chase speak, keeping her eyes away from him, even though she didn't have anything to hide in her expression. "So you're using me to get to Josh," she said slowly, as if considering. She added an ace to her pile, looking at the heart design. "That your master plan?" Nell almost smirked. He sounded so cocky. "I hope you realize you're dealing with a college student. A junior. You're like..." she brushed her fingers together as if searching for a word. "Astillas for him. Kindling. And why do you even care about going after him?" Now she certainly wasn't going to tell Josh anything. Though she had to wonder if Lark would. She knew it would be out of concern and she wouldn't mind, but she didn't want to make a mountain out of a molehill. Though Lark certainly didn't see it as such. She saw it was Nell making a molehill out of a mountain.
The supervisor narrowed his eyes, clearly not amused by Chase's cockiness. Nell didn't divert her eyes from the cards, but she paid keen attention to the conversation. "Well then, I suggest you cancel those plans. And if you skip tomorrow, that'll mean two detentions, understood?" She actually didn't understand the purpose of it, handing out detentions like that. It didn't change anyone who received them, but she tried not to question the education system. She didn't have much experience with it. Nell snorted when he spoke again, this time about her pants. Her skin was smarting, but it was like touching a pot when it was still hot. Not as bad as his attack before. "Try harder,"she suggested, knowing he wanted to get a rise out of her. Would he try to attack her again? Hell, that might mean going to the headmaster.

Chase chuckled, the little Earth brat had a mouth on her. He'd admit that much, and she knew how to use it. His eyes settled on her face, a look of malicious intent in them. "Even though you are being sarcastic, I just have to say there's no way something like you could impress me." He had no care of what the Earths did or said. The only thing Chase cared about was furthering himself and his element, all those that opposed this idea was just another obstacle he had to go over. Well destroy, not go over. The Fire Elemental looked away from Nell and gazed at the roof, "How's Lark doing?" His voice went flat and cold, the question was genuine he just had positive feelings toward the woman he had just asked about.
"Hmm" he turned to look at her as mentioned his "master plan". "Oh God no, that's not my master plan. That's just something that should be taken care of." He shot her a look of disgust, "If your fiancé had something called loyalty and honour he would've never betrayed his own for the likes of you, and because of that we lost Lark too." Chase gave her a mock smile before continuing, "I really don't care what he is, he could be the first Fire Elemental himself I'd still challenge him. If I were afraid of everyone that was stronger and older than me, then what would be the point of me being a leader? If I ran from Josh, I wouldn't be disgracing myself only, but my whole entire Element. We don't run from anyone." His voice held a note of finality to it, she wouldn't be able to stop him from going after Josh, not by scaring him nothing short of killing Chase would stop him. Chase whipped out his phone and placed it in the table, standing it on the side he began to spin it around. "The system for the Alliance can be compared to the Grand Design of life, and what happens when you break the Grand Design?" Chase allowed his phone to rock from side to side before it fell flat on the desk, "Everything becomes unstable and comes crashing down." He glanced at the Earth Elemental again, "You and your lover are messing with things that shouldn't have been tampered with."
Chase glanced at the supervisor, a look of annoyance on his face, "Yeah, okay." Was all he said in reply before returning his attention to Nell, their conversation had been getting interesting. He might even be able to find out a few things if she had a slip of tongue. He just had to be careful what he said. "If I tried, it would mean you're worth the effort...you aren't." Chase wasn't just saying this, he honestly didn't think she was worth the effort of actually trying to think up a good insult. His eyes looked at her pants where he had managed to give her a little singe, "Stings a little doesn't it." His eyes went back to her face as he looked her right in the eyes, "Don't worry, the next time I burn you, wherever that flame hits, there wont be any feelings left after." If he ever did get into a confrontation with this girl again he wasn't sure he'd be able to stop himself from burning to her to death. Or beating rather, he didn't want to take the chance of the damned Profs healing her again.

Nell snorted. "Since I was being sarcastic, what makes you think that I care about that?" It was like he just wanted to talk for the sake of talking, of stating his opinions even though she didn't give a damn about them. She wouldn't be able to impress him? Oh fucking well. She was going to have to cry about that later at home, huh. Her face revealed nothing even while inside she instinctively bristled at the question, a porcupine on alert. "Just swell," she said, and whether or not it was sincere didn't really matter. The girl was a traitor, and he didn't mean to catch up with her because of that question, she could tell that. If he harbored a grudge against Josh, than he probably harbored a grudge against her, too.
Nell flipped over the cards, lending her his ear still. What else was she going to do in this classroom? She lifted her chin when he talked about loyalty and betrayal. "The likes of me? Awfully high and mighty for someone who got duped by the likes of me." He could argue that he found out, but he still fell for it, still went to look, still trusted her on some level. Even if he couldn't admit it. In a way, she could admire Chase's words. But not much else. "Your ass," she simply stated. Maybe she should deter him, though. He had his entire element backing him. Josh and Lark had the Earth's support, but they were susceptible to the Fires, and the Water could possibly help though she couldn't be too confident about them.
She heard his phone on the desk, and turned again from her game, a wry expression on her face. "The grand design of life?" she said quizzically. "And what is the grand design of life?" Was he honestly comparing the size of life to that of the alliance? His dramatics were more entertaining than anything right now. "You sound like a superstitious old man in a horror movie," she said, and she wasn't smiling. It would have been funnier if he was a friend, if this wasn't a conversation which was almost hilarious in its stupidity. "We upset the balance? Well, clearly the alliance is still standing strong. But maybe you're right. Maybe I'll just woo a few more of your Fires, hmm?" Hitting below the belt? Nah, she could do worse.
Nell was even more amused when Chase looked annoyed with the supervisor. Really, guy? She shook her head. "Aww, but you're still talking," she said, wearing a mournful expression on her face. Then what was his business? She kept her confidence, because nothing could throw her off. "No," Nell said tonelessly. "You're cute. Guessing that means you'll kill me, right? Can't tell since you're still going for the whole melodrama, Hollywood speech." She was probably provoking him, but what else did he think he could do to her? "Probably a good time to remind you that you'll be going to jail. Just a thought." She couldn't speak for herself, she got off for murder. But that was because of self-defense--Chase wouldn't be defending himself.
