On a nice summer day like this, even Joshua could be easily persuaded to put down his textbook and go outside into the sunshine. He had been holed up in the library when a couple of his friends from the Water element had approached and all but dragged him away from his work, not that he was all that reluctant. Joshua was slightly wary of their intentions as he tagged alongside them, listening with interest as two of them went on about a horrific experience in a chemistry lab. "Almost makes me wish I wish in your class," he said, snickering. He was a year older than the pair and so despite being in similar majors and taking a lot of the same classes, their courses never actually clashed. The other member of their group was his age and so he turned to her and held an easy discussion about a paper they had due for History that week. "I can't get the last couple pages out," she said in frustration. "I feel like it's ramble if I go on and on about it. What'd you do?" He did his best to explain but it was hard for him to outline his plans and how he'd worked them out. History was no chore for him and the words came easily. He had to work a bit harder for Biology but he wasn't opposed to finishing his work for those classes later.
"Let's go to the lake," one of the guys suggested. Joshua immediately had something to say about this but he paused before voicing his opinion so it didn't come across as suspicious. "Hey, it's you guys that are the Water monkeys. I'd rather not." The third member of their little group snorted. "Well I'm sorry that there's a serious lack of volcanoes around here." Joshua couldn't help but to laugh at that, true as it was. He gestured vaguely to a dark mountain that sloped over the horizon off in the distance, visible from where they stood at the top of the hill. "Nearest one is there. I don't think any of us fancy the walk." The girl watched it with what appeared to be a mixture of interest and caution. "Is it active?" Joshua shook his head and she relaxed. "There are active ones but none so close. I don't think they wanted the school to be in the path of an eruption when they built it." Of course the school hadn't been built as a school but they were all aware of this and so they understood what he meant. Thankfully they complied with his request to avoid the lake and the group instead settled in the grassy grounds.
"So you're not going to trick me, then?" Joshua raised his eyebrows at the trio when he spoke. It was the main reason he'd hesitated when coming out here and also one of the other reasons he avoided the lake. Any tricks with the body of water might have been funny to a Water but he was afraid of the depths and so he would avoid them as much as possible. "Don't give them any ideas," said the girl, laughing and looking at the two boys that accompanied them. The two just laughed. They stayed there and chatted amongst themselves for a while before the bell rang and the other three had classes that they had to get to. It was break time for the high school students and those college students (Joshua included) that did not have classes at this time and so Josh made his way to the gardens with the intent of enjoying the scenery and getting some peace. He admired the work of the Earths and the many diverse things that they could do. Fire was largely an offensive element and not one meant for aesthetics. Earth elementals compromised their talents by being less of an offensive element but that didn't matter seeing as most of them hated fighting. He sat down on a bench beside a statue, vines curling around its arms and hanging down from its hands.

Serina felt like she was being pulled outside by the other kids as she couldn't make her way out of the crowd. She wanted to go the other way, towards the library. She and her friends were planning to review their math together, though; none of them were very good at it. However, once Serina was forced outside, she didn’t want to go back in. To her, it was more beautiful than what she imagined from the windows. She turned around to go back inside, but quickly changed her mind and walked through the gardens. She decided to take the long way. I should get my friends to come out and study outside instead… Serina looked around. Or maybe they already are. Serina didn’t see any sign of her friends around so she continued to wander the gardens. She liked the gardens; they always seemed full of life and colour. Several of Serina’s friends were Earth’s and were highly involved in working with these gardens. Serina wished she could help, but the Earth’s were much more efficient at it then she would ever be. While looking at the flowers, Serina ‘s foot caught on an over grown root. She stumbled forwards, but couldn’t gain her balance and fell to the ground. “Oww…” Serina felt a slight pain in her elbows and knees but nothing she couldn’t handle. When she went to push herself up, the pain in her hands nearly caused her to fall again. When she was safely kneeling Serina looked at her hands, and saw the heels covered in blood. “Ow…Iya â.” Serina tried brushing the dirt out of the cuts but it caused her more pain and more bleeding. “Watashi wa nani o shimasu ka?” She looked around and noticed someone sitting on a bench a few rows down. Their back was to her so they hadn’t seen her. Maybe they’ll help. Serina stood up. She noticed the scraps on her knees weren’t bad and nor were the scraps on her elbows. All she had to worry about were her hands. She quickly brushed off the dirt and walked towards the person. She watched to make sure she didn’t trip over anything else. Serina pushed her wrists together to help stop the bleeding. She walked around the statue and stood next to the bench. “Excuse me? I am sorry to bother you but do you happen to have a tissue I can use?” Serina knew she must look pretty bad with all the blood, but she couldn’t help it. Even so, she didn’t look at the boy on the bench. {OOC} Iya â = oh no Watashi wa nani o shimasu ka = what do I do? [/ul][/ul][/blockquote]

Joshua was not close enough to the girl to see her fall or even to hear her exclamations of pain and worry so he paid her no mind as he relaxed on the bench, watching as a bumblebee buzzed around one of the flowers. He was not afraid of bees and so he did not move even when it migrated to a closer flower. He knew the warm sun would be beating down overhead but he was shaded by a tree that had been planted a little ways behind the bench, it's large canopy providing respite from the heat to the surrounding area. The garden was beautiful, an art form in and of itself. Earth elementals really could do remarkable things. Even still, despite the pleasing aesthetics of their powers, Joshua would not give his up for the world. The Fire was a part of him, and to lose it would be like losing an arm.
He was distracted by the sound of a voice, a girl's voice, and he immediately turned his head toward the sound. She was not looking at him but he found himself taking in the details of her appearance rather rapidly. She was younger than he was, he didn't know her, but mostly importantly, she was injured. What did she ask me for again? He hesitated for a moment, trying to recall, then gave a bit of a start when he did. "Er, no, no, I don't, sorry." He was telling the truth, at least. The clothes off his back were the only things he had on him. His pressed white shirt, blue jeans, a pair of sunglasses and the gold Rolex that adorned his wrist. Serina had lucked out in a way, however, for Joshua was not as hostile as he appeared. Not that she was looking toward him enough to see the scar on his face and his imposing height.
Standing up and brushing invisible specks of dirt from his pants, Joshua kept his slate gray gaze trained on her. "Maybe there's something else I could do, though. What happened?" His tone adapted an air of professionalism as he spoke, his instincts kicking in. Though he did not get too close, having no desire to violate personal space of a stranger, Josh could see from where he stood that the wounds were tinged with dirt. They looked like scrapes and given the mud, he figured that she'd fallen at some point in the garden. He wondered briefly whether she'd been pushed or whether the injuries had been accidental, then decided those were the least of his worries right now. She'd be alright, they didn't seem to be threatening wounds, but that didn't mean he was going to completely ignore her and let her be on her way. If she didn't want his help he would have the sense to back down but offering it was the least he could do.
"I'm Joshua," he offered, to inject a sense of familiarity. Normally he would have offered to shake her hand but decided against it considering their predicament. "You should probably clean out those cuts so that they don't get infected. Do you have any other injuries?" Something so minor wouldn't need the medical wing, just basic first aid in the form of cleaning the cuts. They might not even need bandaging, depending. Most people left scrapes undressed due to the wide spread of the small cuts.

Serina was surprised when she spoke in Japanese, she knew Joshua wouldn’t be able to understand and just hear gibberish. "Thank you, I’m sorry to have bothered you,” She quickly corrected. Even though her head was down, Serina could see Joshua stand. She knew she couldn’t leave now, that would be rude to Joshua. What should I do now? Serina wondered if Joshua was going to leave, if that’s why he got up. Apparently that wasn’t the case. “Watashi…ah…tripped. I-I tripped,” Serina stuttered out once she realized she had the right words. She raised her head to look at Joshua and found she was looking up. He was more than a foot taller than her. “Uwâ, anata wa segatakai ne,” Serina muttered. It was quite obvious that Joshua was several years older than Serina. His height, his age and his Scar, which Serina just noticed, started to intimidate her. Despite that he talked nicely to her. Joshua? Serina didn’t remember what the introduction custom was but since Joshua didn’t do anything she figured it wasn’t necessary. “Se-se-Serina. I’m Serina.”Serina understood she’d have to clean out her cuts, but other injuries? Serina moved her hands apart and that stung a little. “My-my hands hurt?” Serina was partially asking, partially telling. She held her hands out to Joshua but, besides the small gashes from the ground, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong. Serina was having trouble figuring out how to communicate what exactly hurt. Her English was still terrible and she didn’t even know half the words she would need. It wasn’t just Serina’s hand that hurt; she felt this tight, cutting pain in both her writs stretching from her palm to the middle of her forearm. Serina ran one finger down the area that hurt on her left arm. It hurt just to touch. She hoped Joshua would understand that motion because she couldn’t get the English words she needed to describe her pain. {OOC} Jâ, o jama shite môshiwake arimasen = well, I’m sorry to bother you. Watashi = I Uwâ, anata wa segatakai ne = wow, you’re tall [/ul][/ul][/blockquote]

Joshua blinked as the girl responded to him in a language he did not understand, not quite being able to grasp what it was she was trying to say to him. He was fluent in French and English, knew quite a bit of Spanish from Nell, but this was a new one. Is that... Japanese? He could recognise the sounds of the language even if he did not know what she was trying to tell him. She then amended her words in English and Joshua twitched his lips in a brief smile. "It's no trouble, really." Whenever there was something to do with people being hurt, there was something that stirred in him. A desire to help, to do something about it. He was not empathetic like Nell was but he was good at dealing with first-aid and he'd be a bit of a terrible future-doctor if he didn't actually care about people at all, wouldn't he?
Watashi? What does that— He cut off the thought because she was already amending this, too. He remained patient, used to people spouting off in other languages by now. Really, Lark was from Hawaii and Nell spoke Spanish, it came with the territory. "Ah, that sucks." He'd figured as much but it was always best to be sure. When she commented on his height (something Joshua did not pick up on) he waited for an English correct but it did not come. Frowning in confusion, he said, "Sorry?" with the intent of getting a translation. That was if she understood what he was asking. He didn't know whether she was fluent in English and simply used to talking in her native tongue or whether she was just learning English and that was why she slipped up so often. They'd only just met, after all.
He had realised that her hands were the main issue but he nodded when she said it nonetheless, figuring that it meant they were the worst of her troubles and so the only thing that he, when endeavouring to help her, would need help with. Looks pretty bad, at least for a scrape. He wished that he spoke the same language that she did so that he did not have a language barrier to deal with but that was a trivial matter right now. "Hmm... do you want to go to the medical wing? They'd have rubbing alcohol." Shit. What if she doesn't know what that is? "It helps." Somehow that didn't seem much better. Oh well. He could do this. "Oh and, uh, what element are you in?" He figured it was best to get that out of the way before they ran into any issues. He would help out a Thunder or Fire in the medical wing when he was volunteering but it was dangerous to give them the time of day otherwise. He didn't want to get into trouble from his alliance because of this.
