"Are you aware of how awkward this looks?" Joshua's tone was light and conversational as he kept pace with his lab partner, the wheels of the cart the other boy was pushing fairly audible as they bumped and rolled over the stone floors. His partner laughed and shook his head, though the gesture was one of amusement rather than disagreement. "Very." After all, it wasn't every day you were entrusted the task of taking a cadaver to the lab room. They got a few weird looks from the students they passed in the halls but Joshua was not bothered, grinning and whistling a tune when his partner mentioned something about not wanting any attention. This attracted even more eyes, which was of course what Josh was trying to do. His partner and friend glared at him but his lips twitched into a smile after only a few seconds, unable to keep his face straight. "Cut it out, Josh." Having had his fun and knowing when to stop, Joshua complied with the exasperated request. "We were asked to do this, it's not like it's suspicious." The other boy, whose name was Ryan, rolled his eyes. "Yeah but it looks suspicious." It certainly did, Josh couldn't argue with that. They were pushing around a dead guy with nothing but a blanket covering him so that they didn't flash the people they walked past.
They encountered a problem when they actually reached the room, finding that it was both locked and inaccessible with the key that Ryan had grabbed from their professors desk. "Let me see," said Joshua patiently when Ryan jimmied the key in the lock and let out a cry of frustration. The Earth elemental did not have a temper like Joshua did but he was not as patient as the Fire. It was amusing how they contradicted one another in personality. The key was shoved into his hand and he gave it a half-hearted try to confirm that it was indeed not working, then turned it over to inspect the engraving on its head. Instead of a room number, the name of a company was present. There was also no tag naming the number of the room it supposedly opened. "This is a house key," he said, frowning. "What?" Ryan hadn't been paying attention, instead looking up and down the halls as if paranoid people would be staring at them. "The key, it's not for the rooms. It's a house key. Unless you're planning to break into Professor Sanders' house..." Ryan ran a hand through his hair. "Shit." Knowing that they couldn't just leave a dead body in front of the door, he said, "Wait here, I'll run back and grab it."
"No way!" The protest surprised him until the Earth said, "You aren't leaving me alone with the dead guy." Joshua rolled his eyes but refrained from saying anything too insulting. He knew from previous conversations that Ryan was both superstitious and believed in the supernatural so to dismiss his fears would be to undermine what the other boy considered to be a very serious situation. "Fine," said Josh, "then I'll stay here and you go. But hurry up, I don't want to be out here for hours." His friend looked uncertain for a moment but then nodded and accepted the key back, heading off in the direction they'd come. He wasn't nearly as self-conscious as Ryan and so the strange looks from people who walked by hardly phased him. One girl actually stopped, eyeing the corpse with an air of distrust. "Is he... dead?" Joshua nodded. "Yep." When she looked at him as if he'd gone mad, he resisted the urge to laugh and instead told her, "Anatomy student." She lifted her head in silent acknowledgement and then walked away shaking it. Joshua leaned against the wall, wishing his partner would hurry up. He didn't have any more classes but there wasn't much fun in supervising a corpse.
[What an awkward situation~ Anyone can join, I don't mind.]

It was most important in these situations NOT to panic.
Natalie kept reminding herself of this as she stalked down the very unfamiliar hallway that was somewhere in the Academy. It was strange how one simple wrong turn can lead to some massive domino effect that landed you in deeper trouble than it was worth. Gripping the strap of her shoulder bag, ballerina-flat-clad feet thudding harder on the floor, she cast her blue eyes this way and that as she refused for the countless time to turn around and head back the way she came. She knew that there was bound to be a right turn up ahead, even if it took her hours to get there. Must. Not. Panic.
She turned another corner, huffing in anger as it looked exactly like the one she was just on, except longer and maybe a little more abandoned. Flipping her hair over her shoulder, she looked down to take out her phone and send a text to Layla. "SOS-- so sad I get lost in my own school."
She glared down at her screen as she slowed her stride, willing Layla to answer. She knew Layla was on the clock at the cafe in which they both worked, down in Maple Hallow. But Layla was never known to stick to the rules, so maybe she'd have her phone on call and she'd be able to help Natalie out. But with every second that passed with her screen not showing new texts, Natalie's fear grew. It was just too empty in this hallway. She didn't even want to look up, though she had no doubt she probably would run straight into a wall soon enough.
But of course, it wasn't a wall that she ran into. Just as her screen went to black, her hip collided with some sharp corner of a random table. Gasping quietly, Natalie looked over and furrowed her brows when she saw a sheet-covered cadaver straight out of the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigators" show she proudly called herself a nerd over. Her eyes grew wide and she looked up just to spot an intense-looking guy who was just standing there as if nothing in the world was wrong. Then her gaze traveled both ways down the long hallway... Ah, great. This was Horror movie material right down to the innocent little girl who was in the wrong place at the VERY wrong time.
She blinked at the guy, frozen in place and just a little too close for comfort. Then reality took over and calmed her enough to rock back on her heels and place one hand on her hip, examining him with an almost amused expression.
"Killer personality?" She asked lightly, her voice a little thick-sounding, as per usual for her.

Joshua opened his mouth to warn the girl of the obstruction when she drew close to the table but by the time he noticed her presence, she was already bumping into the edge. He winced sympathetically but she didn't seem to notice—not that he blamed her, considering the fact that she was probably dealing with a sharp pain in her side at this point. He gazed coolly at the girl who'd interrupted his silent vigil over the body, noting how she glanced down the halls but not realising that it might have been out of paranoia or fear. He was considering asking her if she was alright when she spoke, and at the joke his lips twitched and broke the façade of his intense exterior, his expression lightning ever so slightly. "Deadly," he agreed. He said it as if there was nothing at all wrong with what was going on and like this was an occurrence that might have happened daily. He was a pretty calm and composed guy when it all came down to it.
"Are you alright?" He had once expressed little to no concern over the well-being of strangers but years of working in a hospital environment and truly adjusting to his passion for medicine had softened him slightly to the woes and injuries of others. He still wasn't the shoulder to cry on for any random stranger who happened to cross his path but he was at least more considerate when it came to pain. "I would have warned you but I was a bit distracted myself." It was not an apology but it was close to one as she was probably going to get. He did not necessarily owe her an apology, seeing as she was equally at fault for not looking where she was going, but even if he had Josh would not have thought to offer one. Apologising simply wasn't his way of going about it. There was a slight irony in that he was Canadian and it was one of the larger stereotypes attached to them, the fact that they were nice, but his pride did not make him a bad person. Just a stubborn one.
His distractions had come in the form of his thoughts, something he often became lost in when he was left to his own devices. Joshua's mind had a hard time shutting off no matter what he was doing. He was always thinking about something or another, never really the type to drift into a daydreaming state. He'd been thinking about a history paper that he needed to write and how imperative it was that he not forget to do some research when he returned home that evening. He'd been hoping to spend some time with Nell but he figured that might have to wait if he wanted to get an early start on the paper. Pushing these thoughts to the side before they diverted him any further from reality, he glanced at the corpse and then back at the girl. "You know, I'd say 'it's not what it looks like', but it really is." It was a dead guy. A very dead one. At least Joshua had no hand in killing him. He didn't think he could take the life of another person. The Fire could be violent and volatile if his temper was provoked but he did not see himself as a murderer.
Offering a hand in order to seem a little less unfriendly, he said, "I'm Joshua. Where were you going, anyway?" A smile touched his lips, almost teasing, as he added, "Before you bumped into John Doe here." He did not know what the name of the man had actually been. He supposed it might be written down somewhere or perhaps on a toe tag that had been removed for the sake of the lab. It was a little more disturbing to see someone being cut up if you knew their name. Human nature dictated it to be so. Joshua was desensitized to a lot of these things owing to the fact that he worked in a hospital and saw dead folk quite a bit. It was sad, but it was life. He was becoming a doctor to try and prevent death but he was not a god. People died no matter what sort of intervention took place. Mortality was a terrible thing.

Maybe it was wrong for Natalie to laugh at the response that his stranger gave her. Maybe she should've felt uncomfortable, but the moment she registered it, a wide smile swept across her face and she knew she couldn't stop the laughter to follow. Rubbing the place on her hip where the corner of the table had struck, she shook her head in mock-admiration. "Very nice." she muttered as she regained her composure, though let the smile remain there.
And then she read the guy's question on his lips. He asked her if she was okay, and she answered with a shrug to ignore the annoyance of her hip's complaining. It would most certainly be sore and bruised later. She looked down at her jeans pocket as if she had x-ray vision and could see the skin directly beneath it. "Yeah, all good."
she motioned the sign for "ok" with her hand, out of habit as she looked back up at him. "Lot better off than your-- friend. And don't worry, I won't blame you for too long." she narrowed her eyes playfully, then waving a hand sincerely to shrug it off as nothing. And then of course, the conversation demanded to be turned to the random dead body sitting to the side of them. She kept her eyes on his mouth before glancing at the body and furrowing her brows through the smile on her face. "Well, you could just make up something to make me feel a bit better." She chuckled to let him know she was totally kidding. All her initial fear had been pretty much chased away by this point. Besides, there weren't exactly any known murderers running around the school, and at the Academy, one's bound to run into literally ANYTHING. Natalie had just learned to take it in strides, and eventually learned to love the Academy's complete randomness. "Orrr, you could tell me where you guys are going to hang out? Not a lot of places that cater to his type." She placed her hand on her hip again, more in an interested stance. When he offered his hand, she didn't hesitate to lift her own and take his, shaking it confidently. ”Natalie.” then she glanced both directions down the hallway, the helplessness writing itself across her face before she chuckled and looked back at him. ”And I would tell ya if I knew myself. I thought I knew all of this school. Turns out…” she filled it in with a shrug. ”Hey, maybe I should thank John.” she signed only the thank you and pointed at him, a joking expression on her face. ”He made me stop to ask for directions, which I normally have a vow against.” she raised her brows and tucked her hair behind the hearing aid, behind her ear, drawing all her hair onto one shoulder. She wished she had brought a hairband to give herself a ponytail, but oh well. The sooner she found the way back to familiar territory, the sooner she’d have the rest of the free evening to look forward to, safe and sound. ”Any chance you have Dora the Explorer and her trusty map in your back pocket?”[/blockquote][/blockquote] {{Sorry, Nat's kinda talkative in this one.}}

Joshua was glad to hear she was alright, even though it hadn't seemed a very bad injury to begin with. She wasn't pouring blood everywhere and she didn't need to be hospitalized. As he worked in a hospital, the Fire graduate was quite accustomed to seeing all manner of grotesque and gory wounds or afflictions. It could turn the stomach of many with low composure but he swore he had a stomach of steel after his years of volunteering. He didn't have to deal with these injuries (he wasn't a doctor yet, much as he wanted to be) but he saw them being wheeled down the halls and sometimes when he popped into a room to deliver supplies. A bruised hip had nothing on what he'd seen.
He smirked, playing along as he said, "Alright, let's see what I can come up with." He frowned and tapped his chin with a finger as if he were really thinking hard. Joshua had an excellent poker face and he maintained a serious, critical expression throughout. On the inside he was laughing but that said nothing for his calmed exterior. Breaking his façade with a slight grin, brief but genuine, Joshua said, "It's a cadaver for Anatomy. I'll soon know more about this guy's inner workings than I'd ever care to learn." In actuality, Joshua was fascinated by the advanced anatomical lessons. He wanted to soak up as much knowledge as he could before he went off to medical school and experienced these sorts of things for real. He was most looking forward to residency but that was years away. He needed to focus more on the present, lest he got lost within his wanderings.
Upon finding out that she was lost, he was not all that surprised. The halls were maze-like and easy to get tangled up in. He remembered relying on his map for the entirety of the ninth grade, pinning it inside his binder so that other people did not know when he was looking at it. He had a lot of pride and did not like to admit when he was clueless about sometimes. He noticed her gesturing with her hands and wondered what it meant, having never learned sign language himself. He got the general gist of what she was saying, though, and he smiled. "I might not have Dora as company but I certainly know my way around. I've been here seven years." Well, six and a half, but who really needed to get into specifics? He only bothered with minute details when it counted. "Where do you want to go? I could show you around, help you get your bearings. And the office has maps, so we could go there if you want. I just need to wait for my friend to get ba—oh, here he is now."
Ryan seemed surprised that Josh had found company but didn't comment on this fact, merely holding up the right keys in silent triumph. "Thought you'd lost your way, Ry," he teased, and the Earth glared at him. His friend opened the door and wheeled the cadaver inside, closing and locking it behind him. "I'll get these back to Sanders. See you, Dale." Registering the use of his last name, Josh's lips twitched with amusement. "Ah, sorry about that. My lab partner. Anyway, it's nice to meet you, Natalie." He had noticed the hearing aid and it finally clicked to him why she might have been gesturing with her hands. He wondered how hard sign language was to learn. He'd never tried. "What element are you in?" he asked, curious. It would suck if she turned out to be Thunder or Fire. It was always awkward to introduce yourself and then learn that they were the enemy.
[Oh, that's fine, I love dialogue <3]

Natalie let out a laugh when he started to think up a proper story to give her, explaining John Doe's presence amongst them. She could tell already she liked this guy named Joshua. He seemed very comfortable just being himself. And she sincerely doubted he had been involved in poor John's death, so it worked out. Even so, she nodded and let out a joking, quiet "phew!" when he explained the real reason behind it all.
"A lot less exciting, but still a relief. Thank you for your honesty."
She instantly became interested in Josh's mention of anatomy. She didn't often cross medical students wandering the halls of the Academy, but she wasn't surprised. Intrigued was the word. "So you're doubling as a medical student? That's very nice." She shrugged as she glanced at the sheeted body. "Stinks to be John, but still, cool for you." she smiled warmly. When Joshua addressed her being lost, she felt a sense of relief. At least one of them knew where in the world they were. She snapped her fingers in a joking disappointed manner when he said it was a negative on Dora, but she instinctively looked both ways down the hall as if she would see giant arrows suddenly leading her towards her destination, now that she knew someone who would. "Seven?" she signed the number as well, with the visible question mark on her face. "Two more years and I guess I'll be at the magic number too." she grinned at him. When put into physical numbers, she supposed she hadn't been at the Academy all that long, especially compared to some others. On one hand, that was a little disheartening, but on the other, she knew she had a few more years in this place. She loved the Academy, it was closer than a second home. "Well all I need is the dormitories. I'm sure as soon as you point, I'll realize where I am." She nodded when he mentioned a friend. That made sense, medical students sometimes worked in pairs. She looked over when Joshua addressed said friend, giving the new guy a smile. She watched as John Doe was ushered into his room and the door was closed again. She read the name "Dale" on the other guys' lips and figured it was a nickname of some type. And then he was gone and Natalie's eyes trailed after him with interest and mild confusion. Maybe this friend was just shy or whatever. Shrugging, Natalie turned to Joshua and smiled again. "It's cool. I know that cutting into people's always funner in two's." she shrugged nonchalantly, hoping he'd catch it as a joke and not some mildly creepy comment. "It's my pleasure! And not just 'cause you're the first civilization I've seen in the last fifteen minutes." When he addressed her element, she didn't have to hesitate to answer, "Water." she said with a smile, signing it with her hand too. "You?" she asked, pointing at him and raising her brows. "Please don't say fire." She laughed to let him know she was kidding. Then again, who knew? Maybe he was. Something told her that Joshua almost looked the part. Then she wouldn't know what to do. She'd never have to face that problem before, really. It always tended that students of different Elements would just stay away from each other. Of course, she had been in the midst of a few turf wars, but nothing too bad. And nothing between just her and one other Elemental. Oh well, she would come to that (or hopefully not) when Joshua answered.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

He thought about her question before answering. "I suppose so. Not exactly, as I'm not in medical school quite yet, but that's why I took Biology as my first major." Despite his serious answer, Josh felt a twinge of pride when she referred to him as a medical student. He loved the idea that he would one day become a doctor, one of the great minds that worked on recovering the human body from all sorts of illnesses and injuries. It was not only a fascination but a passion. Everyone should remain proud of their passions. "Definitely sucks to be him," he agreed. Joshua was not entirely sure how the guy had died. He'd not seen many cadavers due to how expensive they were for the Academy to purchase but most of them had seemed to be in good condition as far as their physical appearance. He supposed they wouldn't choose anyone who died of a serious injury so that it was easier on both the professor and students. Hell, he didn't know what went through the minds of the higher-ups. At any rate, he'd done enough animal dissection in earlier years to know that it wouldn't bother him too much.
He might not have known sign language but he did recognise facial cues, thankfully enough. "I'm a junior, college." He doubted the high school kids would get to work with human cadavers—nor did they have majors. His high school experience had not been a bad one but he definitely preferred the broad range of things he was learning now. Though he'd been at the top of his class even then, he cared much less about English than, say, Biochemistry. He was good at English, yes, but it was not the subject of his passions. "So you're a... freshman?" He did not realise she was in twelfth grade, high school only being four years in length for those that passed every year. He did not consider special circumstances and merely made assumptions based on his own smooth experiences. He was not the type to take everything into account during conversation. It was a bad habit.
He nodded with understanding when she requested the location to the dormitories and laughed at her comment on cutting people open. It was at that point that he realised he did not know her element and thus asked her, needing to know which of the five dorms to point her toward. Water, he thought, relief seeping through him. Her kind had irritated him when he'd first betrayed his previous alignment but he'd slowly grown accustomed to their personalities. His new allies accepted him and that was enough for Josh to give them a chance, too. "You caught me," he said with a chuckle when she mentioned Fire, lifting his hands slightly and letting them drop back to his sides. He hoped she was joking. It sounded like it but he could never be sure. "Don't worry, though, I'm on your side." He always tried to refrain from saying outright, 'I'm a traitor'. It made his switching sides sound like a bad thing. He knew the Fires and Thunders saw it as such but he loved his fiancée and she was the reason for his betrayal. They could shove it.
Remembering the point of his question, this being the direction of the dormitories, he ran a mental map in his mind and turned until he was facing a certain hallway. "It's on the first floor. Staircase leading down is at the end of that hall. Mess hall is to the right of the stairs, though I'm sure you know that." He smiled. He wasn't insulting her but being genuine. After four years she probably knew the first floor extremely well, it was the upper floors that tended to pose a problem for most people. He wondered whether she'd leave right away or whether she was content to stay and chat for a little while longer. He had nothing to do, so he wasn't bothered either way.

Natalie listened as Joshua explained that he wasn't a medical student yet, but hinted that he was headed there. She nodded with an impressed expression. She admired doctor's abilities to just go into a room and save a life, or not save a life and deal with it professionally. She wasn't fearful of the whole blood and guts part, but the giving news to family members that their loved one hadn't survived, or giving news to the patients that they only had a certain amount of time in life. It was sad, and she pondered over the doctors' strength in that regard. "Well good luck to you in your endeavors-- and to John." she clicked her tongue in a joke as if saying 'tough luck, mate' to the John Doe in question, before grinning at Joshua.
"Nice, so almost to the grad mark."
Natalie always liked meeting those kids who were almost to the whole make-your-own-way-in-the-world stage of life. It was like a whole big amazing mystery to her, and she loved it. The thought of being a full grown adult, relying on yourself and having other little kids look up to you. That was an invigorating feeling. "No, I'll be a senior, high school." She had to wonder if she really did look quite that young to be mistook as a freshman. That was mildly discouraging but oh well, she would just stay content with the surprise factor when she told them she was almost four years older than freshmen. When he revealed the positive answer to her joking question about being a Fire Element, Nat's eyes grew wide and she opened her mouth in a showing of surprise, which turned into an amused smile when he informed her he was on her side. "Oh no, this is a turf war situation, I don't know how to react." she joked completely, then shrugged her shoulders. "Joking. Never met a nicer Fire. I think you're a keeper." she nodded as if deciding a truce, grinning warmly. She was never one for the stupid turf wars that went on around the Academy anyway, and whereas she wouldn't openly attempt to keep the peace between her Element and another's, she didn't go looking for trouble with those who were supposed to be her "enemy". Joshua seemed the same way, which made her glad. She watched his method of finding the way mentally to the dorms and gave a little smile of amusement, though not in a rude way. Then she listened sincerely to his explanation and lifted her head, nodding and scoffing. "It's food, of course I know. I'm obsessed." she grinned. "Those directions just made too much sense for me to have to ask where I was." she laughed quietly, "Now I'm not nearly as scared for my life. Thanks, Joshua, you're really my savior." she accompanied it with an honest laugh, shaking her head at her own foolishness. She wondered for a moment if he wanted to just be left alone now. After all, she no longer had a reason to stand there because he had helped her out of the black hole of being lost. But she really had no other place to be right now, since Layla was working and all her other near-friends were studying or hanging out with boyfriends or girlfriends or whatever. "So, what got you so interested in medical stuff --most importantly the dead people part-- anyway?" she asked sincerely, indicating the deceased body who was still lying innocently between them[/blockquote][/blockquote]

He nodded, lips twitching. He couldn't wait until he was graduated and finally out in the real world, no longer stuck learning as a college student at the Academy. At the same time, Joshua was at a point in his present life where he had adult responsibilities anyway. A fiancée, a house, a car, two jobs, school. He was a busy bee, a worker bee, always on his feet and never slowing down to really relax in life. He did not like to relax, to sit around and do nothing with his day. Joshua thrived off feeling productive. "Ah, my bad. Thought you were in college." He hadn't actually believed that she was a freshman in high school but a freshman in undergraduate school instead. There were only four years in high school so he wondered if she'd repeated a grade at some point in her life. He didn't ask her about it, though, because there was a possibility that it could be personal. He didn't like to pry. "Well, almost, eh? The year'll be over soon enough." He'd be a senior in college soon. It was mind-blowing and exciting at the same time. Mostly exciting. He'd been waiting for this for a while.
Joshua was at least relieved that Natalie didn't shun him or immediately walk in the other direction. Though he'd betrayed the Fires a while ago, there were still a few Earths and Waters who hadn't put any trust in him quite yet. The alliances were taken very seriously by the majority of the student population and so he could not exactly blame them for their wariness. He'd been the Fire element's leader in twelfth grade and had started a lot of fights with his now-allies. They had every right to be worried. He was loyal to them, though, because he was loyal to Nell. "Why thank you, I try." He said it jokingly but in reality it was good to be called nice. Meant he was doing something right, didn't it? "As long as you don't soak me, prank me, or otherwise compromise my immediate safety, I think we could get along." He threw her a wink to make sure she knew he was kidding around. It was often hard to tell with him.
The mention of food almost made him laugh. Are you friendly with Nell, by any chance? His fiancée was like a fucking garbage disposal. He loved her all the same, of course. "Just checking," he assured her. He did laugh when she called him her saviour, mocking a light bow with his hand crossed over his chest. He relaxed his posture afterwards, his mood light. He was having a good day. If he hadn't been, his attitude toward Natalie would have been much less friendly. In fact, Joshua could be downright cold toward strangers on his worse days. The question was unexpected, though he realised after a pause that it really wasn't that far-fetched of a thing to ask. "It's something I've always been interested in. Fascinates me, I guess. Everyone has their passions, hm? I'm guessing you've got some of your own." He wasn't directly asking her what sort of things she was interested in but he would definitely listen if she felt like talking. He simply wasn't a man of many words and ramblings himself. He hadn't told her that he'd gotten into medicine because of his father but that was because he was secretive. "As for the whole dead guy thing... well, that was my little secret until now. Shh." Joking, joking, of course.
