-hi, i'm icarus, i'm falling down,
MAN FOR JUDGMENT MUST PREPARE ME
SPARE OH GOD AND MERCY, SPARE ME
Nell leaned forward, resting her hands on the desk, cocking her hips. "You like him?" she asked slyly, poking the Easy button on Stacy's desk. The woman leaned back in the chair, scratched at her hair. Nell didn't think she was imagining the blush. "Yeah, I do," she replied honestly. "I just don't know if he likes me." It was stated dryly, and she understood that. Her father was a hard man to read. "Oh, he does. He's just...weird." She wasn't lying. He had wanted to go out with her again, he was simply hurt. Nell wondered how much she should tell the woman. He left his mentally unstable wife and chronically ill daughter when I was six, but he's a good guy. That was a past, and it was up to his discretion. This was about maturity and adulthood. She knew better than to start shit. "Where are you going?" she asked. Nell had changed in the bathroom, now sporting shorts and a loose tee. "The beach." She loved to swim, and she left Stacy with a promise to call her later.
Nell flopped down against the sand, spreading her arms and legs out, moving them back and forth. She pulled herself up and looked down. Her sand angel was unsuccessful, but she did manage to get it in places sand shouldn't be, including her hair. One downside of the beach. She waded into the chilly water, ducked beneath and bounced back up. Sometimes it still amazed her, how big this lake seemed to be. They didn't have lakes like this in New York, and besides, she never seen them. This here was more like a beach, the deep bluish-green hiding its secrets, creatures and plants that she wondered if she could manipulate. She dug her feet underneath the algae, remembering how some of her friends proclaimed that they hated the slimy bottom of the lake. As an Earth student, she enjoyed it, and she used her power to let it creep up her leg and imagined it was a lake monster trying to pull her down. She resisted flailing her arms around, in case someone really believed that she was in trouble.
However, there was no fun in playing around all alone. She could occupy herself by making sand castles, drifting around, but she always loved company. For company her first thought was usually Josh, but he wasn't much one for swimming and she didn't know what he was doing at that point. She figured she'd be much better off with a Water student. She got out of the lake, shaking herself like a dog and relishing in the heat quickly drying up the specks of water slipping down her body. Shivering a bit, she sat down on her towel and took out her phone, finding Serina's number and texting it. They weren't too close--Nell loved all her friends equally, but she knew little about the Water girl--but it had been a while since she even talked to her. "Wanna hang out? I'm at the lake in the Hollow, if you're interested." She hit send, tucked it back into her bag. She had brougt an inflatible alligator that she now took out, a green folded accordian.
She folded it out like a blanket and popped open the valve. In a matter of seconds, she discovered that she had a very decent lung capacity, as the toy was seven-foot-long and buoyant before long. The girl grinned triumphantly. "I shall name you Bing," she said, thinking of the name off the top of her head. In waiting, she took out a Popular Science magazine, feeling the water act as a glue for the sand that managed to find its way back onto her body. The best part about going to the beach was returning home for a shower and watching all the sand wash down the drain. It was astounding, how much could collect. She squinted underneath the sunlight, brown eyes illuminated to look like the sand in shallow water, amber and clear. The knot of her bathing suit at the back of her neck irritated her, but it didn't cover the tattoo she had there. She brushed her fingers against it, smiling.
